Pretrained Language Models (PLM) have been greatly successful on a board range of natural language processing (NLP) tasks. However, it has just started being applied to the domain of recommendation systems. Traditional recommendation algorithms failed to incorporate the rich textual information in e-commerce datasets, which hinderss the performance of those models. We present a thorough investigation on the effect of various strategy of incorporating PLMs into traditional recommender algorithms on one of the e-commerce datasets, and we compare the results with vanilla recommender baseline models. We show that the application of PLMs and domain specific fine-tuning lead to an increase on the predictive capability of combined models. These results accentuate the importance of utilizing textual information in the context of e-commerce, and provides insight on how to better apply PLMs alongside traditional recommender system algorithms. Recommender systems are an essential component of e-commerce marketplaces, helping consumers navigate massive amounts of inventory and find what they need or love. In this paper, we present an approach for generating personalized item recommendations in an e-commerce marketplace by learning to embed items and users in the same vector space. In order to alleviate the considerable cold-start problem present in large marketplaces, item and user embeddings are computed using content features and multi-modal onsite user activity respectively. Data ablation is incorporated into the offline model tra…

Deep learning based methods have been widely used in industrial recommendation systems (RSs). Previous works adopt an Embedding&MLP paradigm: raw features are embedded into low-dimensional vectors, which are then fed on to MLP for final recommendations. However, most of these works just concatenate different features, ignoring the sequential nature of users' behaviors. In this paper, we propose to use the powerful Transformer model to capture the sequential signals underlying users' behavior sequences for recommendation in Alibaba. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the propos…
Recommender systems (RSs) are essential for e-commerce platforms to help meet the enormous needs of users. How to capture user interests and make accurate recommendations for users in heterogeneous e-commerce scenarios is still a continuous research topic. However, most existing studies overlook the intrinsic association of the scenarios: the log data collected from platforms can be naturally divided into different scenarios (e.g., country, city, culture). We observed that the scenarios are heterogeneous because of the huge differences among them. Therefore, a unified model is difficult to eff…

With the huge growth in e-commerce domain, product recommendations have become an increasing field of interest amongst e-commerce companies. One of the more difficult tasks in product recommendations is size and fit predictions. There are a lot of size related returns and refunds in e-fashion domain which causes inconvenience to the customers as well as costs the company. Thus having a good size and fit recommendation system, which can predict the correct sizes for the customers will not only reduce size related returns and refunds but also improve customer experience. Early works in this fiel…

With the considerable development of customer-to-customer (C2C) e-commerce in the recent years, there is a big demand for an effective recommendation system that suggests suitable websites for users to sell their items with some specified needs. Nonetheless, e-commerce recommendation systems are mostly designed for business-to-customer (B2C) websites, where the systems offer the consumers the products that they might like to buy. Almost none of the related research works focus on choosing selling sites for target items. In this paper, we introduce an approach that recommends the selling websit…
E-commerce platforms surface interesting products largely through product recommendations that capture users' styles and aesthetic preferences. Curating recommendations as a complete complementary set, or assortment, is critical for a successful e-commerce experience, especially for product categories such as furniture, where items are selected together with the overall theme, style or ambiance of a space in mind. In this paper, we propose two visually-aware recommender systems that can automatically curate an assortment of living room furniture around a couple of pre-selected seed pieces for …

Matrix factorization is one of the most commonly used technologies in recommendation system. With the promotion of recommendation system in e-commerce shopping, online video and other aspects, distributed recommendation system has been widely promoted, and the privacy problem of multi-source data becomes more and more important. Based on Federated learning technology, this paper proposes a shared matrix factorization scheme called SharedMF. Firstly, a distributed recommendation system is built, and then secret sharing technology is used to protect the privacy of local data. Experimental result…

Recommendation systems have lately been popularized globally, with primary use cases in online interaction systems, with significant focus on e-commerce platforms. We have developed a machine learning-based recommendation platform, which can be easily applied to almost any items and/or actions domain. Contrary to existing recommendation systems, our platform supports multiple types of interaction data with multiple modalities of metadata natively. This is achieved through multi-modal fusion of various data representations. We deployed the platform into multiple e-commerce stores of different k…

Category recommendation for users on an e-Commerce platform is an important task as it dictates the flow of traffic through the website. It is therefore important to surface precise and diverse category recommendations to aid the users' journey through the platform and to help them discover new groups of items. An often understated part in category recommendation is users' proclivity to repeat purchases. The structure of this temporal behavior can be harvested for better category recommendations and in this work, we attempt to harness this through variational inference. Further, to enhance the…
Session-based recommendation is an important task for e-commerce services, where a large number of users browse anonymously or may have very distinct interests for different sessions. In this paper we present one of the winning solutions for the Recommendation task of the SIGIR 2021 Workshop on E-commerce Data Challenge. Our solution was inspired by NLP techniques and consists of an ensemble of two Transformer architectures - Transformer-XL and XLNet - trained with autoregressive and autoencoding approaches. To leverage most of the rich dataset made available for the competition, we describe h…

Similar product recommendation is one of the most common scenes in e-commerce. Many recommendation algorithms such as item-to-item Collaborative Filtering are working on measuring item similarities. In this paper, we introduce our real-time personalized algorithm to model product similarity and real-time user interests. We also introduce several other baseline algorithms including an image-similarity-based method, item-to-item collaborative filtering, and item2vec, and compare them on our large-scale real-world e-commerce dataset. The algorithms which achieve good offline results are also test…
Existing recommendation algorithms mostly focus on optimizing traditional recommendation measures, such as the accuracy of rating prediction in terms of RMSE or the quality of top-$k$ recommendation lists in terms of precision, recall, MAP, etc. However, an important expectation for commercial recommendation systems is to improve the final revenue/profit of the system. Traditional recommendation targets such as rating prediction and top-$k$ recommendation are not directly related to this goal. In this work, we blend the fundamental concepts in online advertising and micro-economics into person…

In e-commerce, the watchlist enables users to track items over time and has emerged as a primary feature, playing an important role in users' shopping journey. Watchlist items typically have multiple attributes whose values may change over time (e.g., price, quantity). Since many users accumulate dozens of items on their watchlist, and since shopping intents change over time, recommending the top watchlist items in a given context can be valuable. In this work, we study the watchlist functionality in e-commerce and introduce a novel watchlist recommendation task. Our goal is to prioritize whic…
The item details page (IDP) is a web page on an e-commerce website that provides information on a specific product or item listing. Just below the details of the item on this page, the buyer can usually find recommendations for other relevant items. These are typically in the form of a series of modules or carousels, with each module containing a set of recommended items. The selection and ordering of these item recommendation modules are intended to increase discover-ability of relevant items and encourage greater user engagement, while simultaneously showcasing diversity of inventory and sat…
E-commerce sites strive to provide users the most timely relevant information in order to reduce shopping frictions and increase customer satisfaction. Multi armed bandit models (MAB) as a type of adaptive optimization algorithms provide possible approaches for such purposes. In this paper, we analyze using three classic MAB algorithms, epsilon-greedy, Thompson sampling (TS), and upper confidence bound 1 (UCB1) for dynamic content recommendations, and walk through the process of developing these algorithms internally to solve a real world e-commerce use case. First, we analyze the three MAB al…
Sustaining users' interest and keeping them engaged in the platform is very important for the success of an e-commerce business. A session encompasses different activities of a user between logging into the platform and logging out or making a purchase. User activities in a session can be classified into two groups: Known Intent and Unknown intent. Known intent activity pertains to the session where the intent of a user to browse/purchase a specific product can be easily captured. Whereas in unknown intent activity, the intent of the user is not known. For example, consider the scenario where …

Complementary item recommendations are a ubiquitous feature of modern e-commerce sites. Such recommendations are highly effective when they are based on collaborative signals like co-purchase statistics. In certain online marketplaces, however, e.g., on online auction sites, constantly new items are added to the catalog. In such cases, complementary item recommendations are often based on item side-information due to a lack of interaction data. In this work, we propose a novel approach that can leverage both item side-information and labeled complementary item pairs to generate effective compl…
Personalized size and fit recommendations bear crucial significance for any fashion e-commerce platform. Predicting the correct fit drives customer satisfaction and benefits the business by reducing costs incurred due to size-related returns. Traditional collaborative filtering algorithms seek to model customer preferences based on their previous orders. A typical challenge for such methods stems from extreme sparsity of customer-article orders. To alleviate this problem, we propose a deep learning based content-collaborative methodology for personalized size and fit recommendation. Our propos…

Recommender system plays a crucial role in modern E-commerce platform. Due to the lack of historical interactions between users and items, cold-start recommendation is a challenging problem. In order to alleviate the cold-start issue, most existing methods introduce content and contextual information as the auxiliary information. Nevertheless, these methods assume the recommended items behave steadily over time, while in a typical E-commerce scenario, items generally have very different performances throughout their life period. In such a situation, it would be beneficial to consider the long-…

Recommender Systems are becoming ubiquitous in many settings and take many forms, from product recommendation in e-commerce stores, to query suggestions in search engines, to friend recommendation in social networks. Current research directions which are largely based upon supervised learning from historical data appear to be showing diminishing returns with a lot of practitioners report a discrepancy between improvements in offline metrics for supervised learning and the online performance of the newly proposed models. One possible reason is that we are using the wrong paradigm: when looking …

Most e-commerce product feeds provide blended results of advertised products and recommended products to consumers. The underlying advertising and recommendation platforms share similar if not exactly the same set of candidate products. Consumers' behaviors on the advertised results constitute part of the recommendation model's training data and therefore can influence the recommended results. We refer to this process as Leverage. Considering this mechanism, we propose a novel perspective that advertisers can strategically bid through the advertising platform to optimize their recommended orga…

With the rise of online e-commerce platforms, more and more customers prefer to shop online. To sell more products, online platforms introduce various modules to recommend items with different properties such as huge discounts. A web page often consists of different independent modules. The ranking policies of these modules are decided by different teams and optimized individually without cooperation, which might result in competition between modules. Thus, the global policy of the whole page could be sub-optimal. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-agent cooperative reinforcement learning…
