Based on published data, we have assembled a sample of 126 radio stars with the trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions measured by VLBI and available in the Gaia DR3 catalogue (in fact, Gaia EDR3). Our analysis of the Gaia--VLBI proper motion differences for 84 radio stars based on the model of solid-body mutual rotation has revealed no rotation components differing significantly from zero, $(ω_x,ω_y,ω_z)=(0.06,0.08,-0.10)\pm(0.06,0.07,0.08)$ mas yr$^{-1}.$ Based on the trigonometric parallax differences for 90 stars, we have obtained a new estimate of the systematic offset between the optical and radio frames, $Δπ=-0.022\pm0.017$~mas, and showed that the parallax scale factor is close to unity, $b=1.001\pm0.002$.
Based on published data, we have assembled a sample of 88 radio stars for which there are both trigonometric parallax and proper motion measurements in the Gaia DR2 catalogue and VLBI measurements. A new estimate of the systematic offset between the optical and radio frames has been obtained by analyzing the GaiaDR2-VLBI trigonometric parallax differences: $Δπ=-0.038\pm0.046$ mas (with a dispersion of 0.156 mas). This means that the Gaia DR2 parallaxes should be increased by this correction. The parallax scale factor is shown to be always very close to unity within $\sim$3 kpc of the Sun: $b=1…
Context. The Gaia mission has released the second data set (Gaia DR2), which contains parallaxes and proper motions for a large number of massive, young stars. Aims. We investigate the spiral structure in the solar neighborhood revealed by Gaia DR2 and compare it with that depicted by VLBI maser parallaxes. Methods. We examined three samples with different constraints on parallax uncertainty and distance errors and stellar spectral types: (1) all OB stars with parallax errors of less than 10%; (2) only O-type stars with 0.1 mas errors imposed and with parallax distance errors of less than 0.2 …

We report the relationship between the $Gaia$--VLBI position differences and the magnitudes of source structure effects in VLBI observations. Because the $Gaia$--VLBI position differences are statistically significant for a considerable number of common sources, we attempt to discuss and explain these position differences based on VLBI observations and available source images at cm-wavelengths. Based on the derived closure amplitude root-mean-square (CARMS), which quantifies the magnitudes of source structure effects in the VLBI observations used for building the third realization of the Inter…
The data release 1 (DR1) of milliarcsecond-scale accurate optical positions of stars and galaxies was recently published by the space mission Gaia. We study the offsets of highly accurate absolute radio (very long baseline interferometry, VLBI) and optical positions of active galactic nuclei (AGN) to see whether or not a signature of wavelength-dependent parsec-scale structure can be seen. We analyzed VLBI and Gaia positions and determined the direction of jets in 2957 AGNs from their VLBI images. We find that there is a statistically significant excess of sources with VLBI-to-Gaia position of…
We compare the parallaxes of stars from VLBI astrometry in the literature to those in the Gaia DR2 catalog. Our full sample contains young stellar objects, evolved AGB stars, pulsars and other radio stars. Excluding AGB stars, which show significant discrepancies between Gaia and VLBI parallaxes, and stars in binary systems, we obtain an average, systematic, parallax offset of $-75 \pm 29~μ$as for Gaia DR2, consistent with their estimate of a parallax zero-point between $-100$ and 0 $μ$as.
The VLBI USNO 2016A (U16A) solution is part of a work-in-progress effort by USNO towards the preparation of the ICRF3. Most of the astrometric improvement with respect to the ICRF2 is due to the re-observation of the VCS sources. Our objective in this paper is to assess U16A's astrometry. A comparison with ICRF2 shows statistically significant offsets of size 0.1 mas between the two solutions. While Gaia DR1 positions are not precise enough to resolve these offsets, they are found to be significantly closer to U16A than ICRF2. In particular, the trend for typically larger errors for Southern s…
Significant positional offsets of the value from 1 mas to more than 10 mas were found previously between radio (VLBI) and optical (Gaia) positions of active galactic nuclei (AGN). They happen preferentially parallel to the parsec-scale jet direction. AGN with VLBI-to-Gaia offsets pointed downstream the jet are found to have favourably higher optical polarization, as expected if extended optical jets dominate in the emission and shift the Gaia centroid away from the physical nucleus of the source. Upstream offsets with the suggested domination of accretion disks manifest themselves through the …
We interpret the recent discovery of a preferable VLBI/Gaia offset direction for radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs) along the parsec-scale radio jets as a manifestation of their optical structure on scales of 1 to 100 milliarcseconds. The extended jet structure affects the Gaia position stronger than the VLBI position due to the difference in observing techniques. Gaia detects total power while VLBI measures the correlated quantity, visibility, and therefore, sensitive to compact structures. The synergy of VLBI that is sensitive to the position of the most compact source component, usual…
We analyze differences in positions of active galactic nuclei between Gaia data release 2 and VLBI and compare the significant VLBI-to-Gaia offsets in more than 1000 objects with their jet directions. Remarkably at least 3/4 of the significant offsets are confirmed to occur downstream or upstream the jet representing a genuine astrophysical effect. Introducing redshift and Gaia color into analysis can help distinguish between the contribution of the host galaxy, jet, and accretion disk emission. We find that strong optical jet emission at least 20-50pc long is required to explain the Gaia posi…
With the publication of Gaia DR2, 1.3 billion stars now have public parallax and proper motion measurements. In this contribution, we compare the results for sources that have both optical and radio measurements, focusing on circumstellar masers. For these large, variable and bright AGB stars, the VLBI astrometry results can be more robust. Moreover, there are a number of applications where VLBI astrometry provides unique data for studying stellar populations and Galactic structure. The BeSSel project not only provides parallax and proper motions at much larger distances than Gaia can reach, b…
We have cross matched the Gaia Data Release 1 secondary dataset that contains positions of 1.14 billion objects against the most complete to date catalogue of VLBI positions of 11.4 thousand sources, almost exclusively active galactic nuclei. We found 6,064 matches, i.e. 53% radio objects. The median uncertainty of VLBI positions is a factor of 4 smaller than the median uncertainties of their optical counterparts. Our analysis shows that the distribution of normalized arc lengths significantly deviates from Rayleigh shape with an excess of objects with small normalized arc lengths and with a n…
We have analyzed the differences in positions of 9081 matched sources between the Gaia DR2 and VLBI catalogues. The median position uncertainty of matched sources in the VLBI catalogue is a factor of two larger than the median position uncertainty in the Gaia DR2. There are 9% matched sources with statistically significant offsets between both catalogues. We found that reported positional errors should be re-scaled by a factor of 1.3 for VLBI and 1.06 for Gaia, and in addition, Gaia errors should be multiplied by the square root of chi square per degree of freedom in order to best fit the norm…
We investigate a sample of 3412 {\it International Celestial Reference Frame} (ICRF3) extragalactic radio-loud sources with accurate positions determined by VLBI in the S/X band, mostly active galactic nuclei (AGN) and quasars, which are cross-matched with optical sources in the second Gaia data release (Gaia DR2). The main goal of this study is to determine a core sample of astrometric objects that define the mutual orientation of the two fundamental reference frames, the Gaia (optical) and the ICRF3 (radio) frames. The distribution of normalized offsets between the VLBI sources and their opt…
We report VLBA observations of 22 GHz H$_{2}$O and 43 GHz SiO masers toward the Mira variable RR Aql. By fitting the SiO maser emission to a circular ring, we estimate the absolute stellar position of RR Aql and find agreement with Gaia astrometry to within the joint uncertainty of $\approx1$ mas. Using the maser astrometry we measure a stellar parallax of 2.44 $\pm$ 0.07 mas, corresponding to a distance of 410$^{+12}_{-11}$ pc. The maser parallax deviates significantly from the Gaia EDR3 parallax of 1.95 $\pm$ 0.11 mas, indicating a $3.8σ$ tension between radio and optical measurements. This …

Aims:We take advantage of the second data release of the Gaia space mission and the state-of-the-art astrometry delivered from very long baseline interferometry observations to revisit the structure and kinematics of the nearby Taurus star-forming region. Methods: We apply a hierarchical clustering algorithm for partitioning the stars in our sample into groups (i.e., clusters) that are associated with the various molecular clouds of the complex, and derive the distance and spatial velocity of individual stars and their corresponding molecular clouds. Results: We show that the molecular clouds …
Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) at radio wavelengths can provide astrometry accurate to 10 micro-arcseconds or better (i.e. better than the target GAIA accuracy) without being limited by dust obscuration. This means that unlike GAIA, VLBI can be applied to star-forming regions independently of their internal and line-of-sight extinction. Low-mass young stellar objects (particularly T Tauri stars) are often non-thermal compact radio emitters, ideal for astrometric VLBI radio continuum experiments. Existing observations for nearby regions (e.g. Taurus, Ophiuchus, or Orion) demonstrate t…
We investigate a sample of 2293 ICRF2 extragalactic radio-loud sources with accurate positions determined by VLBI, mostly active galactic nuclei (AGN) and quasars, which are cross-matched with optical sources in the first Gaia release (Gaia DR1). The distribution of offsets between the VLBI sources and their optical counterparts is strongly non-Gaussian, with powerful wings extending beyond 1 arcsecond. Limiting our analysis to only high-confidence difference detections, we find (and publish) a list of 188 objects with normalized variances above 12 and offsets below 1 arcsecond. Pan-STARRS sta…
Context. The astrometric satellite Gaia is expected to significantly increase our knowledge as to the properties of the Milky Way. The Gaia Early Data Release 3 (Gaia EDR3) provides the most precise parallaxes for many OB stars, which can be used to delineate the Galactic spiral structure. Aims. We investigate the local spiral structure with the largest sample of spectroscopically confirmed young OB stars available to date, and we compare it with what was traced by the parallax measurements of masers. Methods. A sample consisting of three different groups of massive young stars, including O-B2…
Recent advances in VLBI have led to astrometric accuracy exceeding that of the Gaia mission goals. This chapter describes some important astrophysical problems that can be addressed with sub-milliarcsecond imaging and micro-arcsecond astrometry using the ngVLA with long baselines.
The centrifugial acceleration of the Solar system, resulting from the gravitational attraction of the Galaxy centre, causes a phenomenon known as 'secular aberrration drift'. This acceleration of the Solar system barycentre has been ignored so far in the standard procedures for high-precision astrometry. It turns out that the current definition of the celestial reference frame as epochless and based on the assumption that quasars have no detectable proper motions, needs to be revised. In the future, a realization of the celestial reference system (realized either with VLBI, or GAIA) should cor…
Radio astrometric campaigns using VLBI have provided distances and proper motions for masers associated with young massive stars (BeSSeL survey). The ongoing BAaDE project plans to obtain astrometric information of SiO maser stars located in the inner Galaxy. These stars are associated with evolved, mass-losing stars. By overlapping optical (Gaia), infrared (2MASS, MSX and WISE) and radio (BAaDE) sources, we expect to obtain important clues on the intrinsic properties and population distribution of late-type stars. Moreover, a comparison of the Galactic parameters obtained with Gaia and VLBI c…
AR Scorpii (AR Sco), the only-known radio-pulsing white dwarf binary, shows unusual pulsating emission at the radio, infrared, optical and ultraviolet bands. To determine its astrometric parameters at the radio band independently, we conducted multi-epoch Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) phase-referencing observations with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 5 GHz and the Chinese VLBI Network (CVN) plus the Warkworth 30-metre telescope (New Zealand) at 8.6 GHz. By using the differential VLBI astrometry, we provide high-precision astrometric measurements on the parallax ($π=8.52_{-0.07}^…
High-redshift radio sources provide plentiful opportunities for studying the formation and evolution of early galaxies and supermassive black holes. However, the number of known radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) above redshift 4 is rather limited. At high redshifts, it appears that blazars, with relativistically beamed jets pointing towards the observer, are in majority compared to radio-loud sources with jets misaligned with respect to the line of sight. To find more of these misaligned AGN, milliarcsec-scale imaging studies carried out with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) are …
Gaia DR2 has revealed new small-scale and large-scale patterns in the phase-space distribution of stars in the Milky Way. In cylindrical Galactic coordinates $(R,ϕ,z)$, ridge-like structures can be seen in the \vphiR{} plane and asymmetric arch-like structures in the \vphivR{} plane. We show that the ridges are also clearly present when the third dimension of the \vphiR{} plane is represented by $\langle z \rangle$, $\langle V_z \rangle$, $\langle V_R \rangle$, $\langle$[Fe/H]$\rangle$ and $\langle[α/{\rm Fe}]\rangle$. The maps suggest that stars along the ridges lie preferentially close to th…
We report results of astrometric VLBI observations toward a Mira variable star BX~Cam using the VLBI array "VERA". The observations were performed from February 2012 to November 2014. Obtained parallax is 1.73$\pm$0.03 mas corresponding to a distance of 0.58$\pm$0.01 kpc. Parallax of this source was also reported in Gaia DR2 as 4.13$\pm$0.25 mas, and there is a 240 \% difference between these two measurements. Astrometric results from our VLBI observations show that we exactly traced angular motions of the seven maser spots in BX~Cam. We calculated stellar luminosities using both parallaxes, a…

Gaia used a large sample of photometrically selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and quasars to remove the residual spin of its global proper motion system in order to achieve a maximally inertial reference frame. A small fraction of these reference objects have statistically significant astrometric proper motions in Gaia EDR3. We compile a source sample of $105,593$ high-fidelity AGNs with accurate spectroscopically determined redshifts above 0.5 from the SDSS and normalized proper motions below 4. The rate of genuinely perturbed proper motions is at least 0.17\%. A smaller high completenes…
Estimating the distances to asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars using optical measurements of their parallaxes is not straightforward because of the large uncertainties introduced by their dusty envelopes, their large angular sizes, and their surface brightness variability. We compared the parallaxes from Gaia DR3 with parallaxes measured with maser observations with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) to determine a statistical correction factor for the DR3 parallaxes using a sub-sample of 33 maser-emitting oxygen-rich nearby AGB stars. We found that the nominal errors on the Gaia DR3 pa…
Compact symmetric objects (CSOs) are radio-emitting active galactic nuclei (AGNs) typically with a double-lobed radio structure confined to within 1 kpc. CSOs represent the earliest evolutionary phase of jetted AGNs. Some of them may eventually evolve into large-scale extended double sources, while others stall within the host galaxy and die out, depending on the longevity of nuclear activity, the jet power, and parameters of the surrounding galactic environment. Studying CSOs is a useful tool for understanding the evolution of the galaxies and the interactions between the jets and the medium …
Radio-loud quasars at high redshift (z > 4) are rare objects in the Universe and rarely observed with Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI). But some of them have flux density sufficiently high for monitoring of their apparent position. The instability of the astrometric positions could be linked to the astrophysical process in the jetted active galactic nuclei in the early Universe. Regular observations of the high-redshift quasars are used for estimating their apparent proper motion over several years. We have undertaken regular VLBI observations of several high-redshift quasars at 2.3 GH…
Embedded clusters are groups of stars which have not dispersed yet the residual of the parental cloud where they were born so getting precise distances and properties of these groups turns out to be an essential task. We present results for five embedded clusters: [DBS2003]5, [DBS2003]60, [DBS2003]98, [DBS2003]116 and [DBS2003]117. Results come from a combination of deep CCD UBVI photometry suitable to identify blue faint stars and infrared information from available surveys. In turn photometry was linked with proper motions and parallaxes from Gaia DR2. Each object was treated in a multi-spac…
We present High Sensitivity Array (HSA) and enhanced Multi Element Remotely Linked Interferometer Network (eMERLIN) observations of the radio-loud broad-lined type Ic supernova PTF11qcj obtained $\sim7.5$ years after the explosion. Previous observations of this supernova at 5.5 yrs since explosion showed a double-peaked radio light curve accompanied by a detection in the X-rays, but no evidence for broad H$α$ spectral features. The Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations presented here show that the PTF11qcj GHz radio ejecta remains marginally resolved at the sub-milliarcsecond l…
We report VLBI monitoring observations of the 22 GHz water (H$_{2}$O) masers around the Mira variable BX Cam, which were carried out as a part of the EAVN Synthesis of Stellar Maser Animations (ESTEMA) project. Data of 37 epochs in total were obtained from 2018 May to 2021 June with a time interval of 3-4 weeks, spanning approximately three stellar pulsation periods ($P= \sim$440 d). In particular, the dual-beam system equipped on the VERA stations was used to measure the kinematics and parallaxes of the H$_{2}$O maser features. The measured parallax, $π=1.79\pm 0.08$ mas, is consistent with $…
Base on about 4,500 large tangential velocity ($V_\mathrm{tan}>0.75V_\mathrm{esc}$) with high-precision proper motions and $5σ$ parallaxes in Gaia DR2 5D information derived from parallax and proper motion, we identify more than 600 high velocity stars with $50\%$ unbound probability. Of these, 28 nearby (less than 6 kpc) late-type Hypervelocity stars (HVSs) with over $99\%$ possibility of unbound are discovered. In order to search for the unbound stars from the full Gaia DR2 6D phase space information derived from parallax, proper motion and radial velocity, we also identify 28 stars from the…
Context: The accretion history of the Milky Way is still unknown, despite the recent discovery of stellar systems that stand out in terms of their energy-angular momentum space, such as Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage. In particular, it is still unclear how these groups are linked and to what extent they are well-mixed. Aims: We investigate the similarities and differences in the properties between the prograde and retrograde (counter-rotating) stars and set those results in context by using the properties of Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage, Thamnos/Sequoia, and other suggested accreted populations. Methods: We…
Radio campaigns using maser stellar beacons have provided crucial information to characterize Galactic stellar populations. Currently, the Bulge Asymmetries and Dynamical Evolution (BAaDE) project is surveying infrared (IR) color-selected targets for SiO masers. This provides a sample of evolved stars that can be used to study the inner, optically obscured Galaxy using line of sight velocities and possibly VLBI proper motions. In order to use the BAaDE sample for kinematic studies, the stellar population should be characterized. In this study, the BAaDE targets have been cross-matched with IR …

We have analyzed the space velocities of stars with the proper motions and trigonometric parallaxes from the Gaia TGAS catalogue in combination with the line-of-sight velocities from the RAVE5 catalogue. In the (V,\sqrt{U^2+2V^2}) velocity plane we have identified three clumps, BB17-1, BB17-2, and BB17-3, in the region of large velocities (V<-150 km/s). The stars of the BB17-1 and BB17-2 clumps are associated with the kinematic groups VelHel-6 and VelHel-7 detected previously by Helmi et al. We give the greatest attention to the BB17-3 clump. The latter is shown to be most closely linked with …

We discuss the physical mechanism by which pure vertical bending waves in a stellar disc evolve to form phase space spirals similar to those discovered by Antoja et al. ( arXiv:1804.10196) in Gaia Data Release 2. These spirals were found by projecting Solar Neighbourhood stars onto the $z-v_z$ plane. Faint spirals appear in the number density of stars projected onto the $z-v_z$ plane, which can be explained by a simple model for phase wrapping. More prominent spirals are seen when bins across the $z-v_z$ plane are coloured by median $v_R$ or $v_ϕ$. We use both toy model and fully self-consiste…
CONTEXT. The GOSSS spectral classifications and Gaia data have significantly improved our ability to measure distances and determine memberships of stellar groups with OB stars. AIMS. We have started a program to identify, measure distances, and determine the membership of Galactic stellar groups with OB stars. We start with the identification and distance determinations of groups with O stars. In this paper we concentrate on groups that contain stars with the earliest spectral subtypes. METHODS. We use GOSSS to select Galactic stellar groups with O2-O3.5 stars and a method that combines Gaia …
In this study we use a sample of about 9 million SkyMapper stars with metallicities to investigate the properties of the two stellar populations seen in the high-velocity ($V_{\rm T} > 200$ km/s) Gaia DR2 Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. Based on 10,000 red giant branch (RGB) stars (out of 75,000 with high velocity), we find that the two sequences have different metallicity distribution functions; one peaks at $-1.4$ dex (blue sequence) and the other at $-0.7$ dex (red sequence). Isochrones with ages in the range $11$-$13.5$ Gyr, and metallicities chosen to match the observations for each sequence…
The debris from past merger events is expected and, to some extent, known to populate the stellar halo near the Sun. We aim to identify and characterise such merger debris using Gaia DR3 data supplemented by metallicity and chemical abundance information from LAMOST LRS and APOGEE for halo stars within 2.5 kpc from the Sun. We utilise a single linkage-based clustering algorithm to identify over-densities in Integrals of Motion space that could be due to merger debris. Combined with metallicity information and chemical abundances, we characterise these statistically significant over-densities. …
Knowledge of ages for stars formed over a galaxy's lifetime is fundamental to understand its formation and evolution. However, stellar ages are difficult to obtain since they cannot be measured from observations, being comparison with stellar models (Soderblom 2010) required. Alternatively, age distributions can be derived applying the robust technique of colour-magnitude diagram fitting (Gallart et al. 2005), till now mainly employed to study nearby galaxies. The new distances to individual Milky Way stars from the Gaia mission (Brown et al. 2018) have allowed us to use this technique to deri…
