The remarkable success of face recognition (FR) has endangered the privacy of internet users particularly in social media. Recently, researchers turned to use adversarial examples as a countermeasure. In this paper, we assess the effectiveness of using two widely known adversarial methods (BIM and ILLC) for de-identifying personal images. We discovered, unlike previous claims in the literature, that it is not easy to get a high protection success rate (suppressing identification rate) with imperceptible adversarial perturbation to the human visual system. Finally, we found out that the transferability of adversarial examples is highly affected by the training parameters of the network with which they are generated.

"The output of a computerised system can only be as accurate as the information entered into it." This rather trivial statement is the basis behind one of the driving concepts in biometric recognition: biometric quality. Quality is nowadays widely regarded as the number one factor responsible for the good or bad performance of automated biometric systems. It refers to the ability of a biometric sample to be used for recognition purposes and produce consistent, accurate, and reliable results. Such a subjective term is objectively estimated by the so-called biometric quality metrics. These algor…
This paper presents a novel face and periocular biometric fusion at feature level using canonical correlation analysis. Face recognition itself has limitations such as illumination, pose, expression, occlusion etc. Also, periocular biometrics has spectacles, head angle, hair and expression as its limitations. Unimodal biometrics cannot surmount all these limitations. The recognition accuracy can be increased by fusing dual information (face and periocular) from a single source (face image) using canonical correlation analysis (CCA). This work also proposes a new wavelet decomposed local binary…
This study investigates the use of ear as a biometric for authentication and shows experimental results obtained on a newly created dataset of 420 images. Images are passed to a quality module in order to reduce False Rejection Rate. The Principal Component Analysis (eigen ear) approach was used, obtaining 90.7 percent recognition rate. Improvement in recognition results is obtained when ear biometric is fused with face biometric. The fusion is done at decision level, achieving a recognition rate of 96 percent.
The performance of face recognition systems can be negatively impacted in the presence of masks and other types of facial coverings that have become prevalent due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In such cases, the periocular region of the human face becomes an important biometric cue. In this article, we present a detailed review of periocular biometrics. We first examine the various face and periocular techniques specially designed to recognize humans wearing a face mask. Then, we review different aspects of periocular biometrics: (a) the anatomical cues present in the periocular region useful for …

In this paper we develop FaceQvec, a software component for estimating the conformity of facial images with each of the points contemplated in the ISO/IEC 19794-5, a quality standard that defines general quality guidelines for face images that would make them acceptable or unacceptable for use in official documents such as passports or ID cards. This type of tool for quality assessment can help to improve the accuracy of face recognition, as well as to identify which factors are affecting the quality of a given face image and to take actions to eliminate or reduce those factors, e.g., with pos…
Computationally efficient, accurate, and privacy-preserving data storage and retrieval are among the key challenges faced by practical deployments of biometric identification systems worldwide. In this work, a method of protected indexing of biometric data is presented. By utilising feature-level fusion of intelligently paired templates, a multi-stage search structure is created. During retrieval, the list of potential candidate identities is successively pre-filtered, thereby reducing the number of template comparisons necessary for a biometric identification transaction. Protection of the bi…

Deep neural networks (DNN) have been a de facto standard for nowadays biometric recognition solutions. A serious, but still overlooked problem in these DNN-based recognition systems is their vulnerability against adversarial attacks. Adversarial attacks can easily cause the output of a DNN system to greatly distort with only tiny changes in its input. Such distortions can potentially lead to an unexpected match between a valid biometric and a synthetic one constructed by a strategic attacker, raising security issue. In this work, we show how this issue can be resolved by learning robust biomet…

Recent research has established the possibility of deducing soft-biometric attributes such as age, gender and race from an individual's face image with high accuracy. However, this raises privacy concerns, especially when face images collected for biometric recognition purposes are used for attribute analysis without the person's consent. To address this problem, we develop a technique for imparting soft biometric privacy to face images via an image perturbation methodology. The image perturbation is undertaken using a GAN-based Semi-Adversarial Network (SAN) - referred to as PrivacyNet - that…
Cancelable biometrics are a group of techniques to transform the input biometric to an irreversible feature intentionally using a transformation function and usually a key in order to provide security and privacy in biometric recognition systems. This transformation is repeatable enabling subsequent biometric comparisons. This paper is introducing a new idea to exploit as a transformation function for cancelable biometrics aimed at protecting the templates against iterative optimization attacks. Our proposed scheme is based on time-varying keys (random biometrics in our case) and morphing tran…
In this study of the face recognition on masked versus unmasked faces generated using Flickr-Faces-HQ and SpeakingFaces datasets, we report 36.78% degradation of recognition performance caused by the mask-wearing at the time of pandemics, in particular, in border checkpoint scenarios. We have achieved better performance and reduced the degradation to 1.79% using advanced deep learning approaches in the cross-spectral domain.
Face recognition is a mainstream biometric authentication method. However, vulnerability to presentation attacks (a.k.a spoofing) limits its usability in unsupervised applications. Even though there are many methods available for tackling presentation attacks (PA), most of them fail to detect sophisticated attacks such as silicone masks. As the quality of presentation attack instruments improves over time, achieving reliable PA detection with visual spectra alone remains very challenging. We argue that analysis in multiple channels might help to address this issue. In this context, we propose …

The role of soft biometrics to enhance person recognition systems in unconstrained scenarios has not been extensively studied. Here, we explore the utility of the following modalities: gender, ethnicity, age, glasses, beard, and moustache. We consider two assumptions: 1) manual estimation of soft biometrics and 2) automatic estimation from two commercial off-the-shelf systems (COTS). All experiments are reported using the labeled faces in the wild (LFW) database. First, we study the discrimination capabilities of soft biometrics standalone. Then, experiments are carried out fusing soft biometr…

The most popular face recognition benchmarks assume a distribution of subjects without much attention to their demographic attributes. In this work, we perform a comprehensive discrimination-aware experimentation of deep learning-based face recognition. The main aim of this study is focused on a better understanding of the feature space generated by deep models, and the performance achieved over different demographic groups. We also propose a general formulation of algorithmic discrimination with application to face biometrics. The experiments are conducted over the new DiveFace database compo…
Spectral imaging has recently gained traction for face recognition in biometric systems. We investigate the merits of spectral imaging for face recognition and the current challenges that hamper the widespread deployment of spectral sensors for face recognition. The reliability of conventional face recognition systems operating in the visible range is compromised by illumination changes, pose variations and spoof attacks. Recent works have reaped the benefits of spectral imaging to counter these limitations in surveillance activities (defence, airport security checks, etc.). However, the imple…

Traditionally, researchers in automatic face recognition and biometric technologies have focused on developing accurate algorithms. With this technology being integrated into operational systems, engineers and scientists are being asked, do these systems meet societal norms? The origin of this line of inquiry is `trust' of artificial intelligence (AI) systems. In this paper, we concentrate on adapting explainable AI to face recognition and biometrics, and we present four principles of explainable AI to face recognition and biometrics. The principles are illustrated by $\it{four}$ case studies,…

Current research on soft-biometrics showed that privacy-sensitive information can be deduced from biometric templates of an individual. Since for many applications, these templates are expected to be used for recognition purposes only, this raises major privacy issues. Previous works focused on supervised privacy-enhancing solutions that require privacy-sensitive information about individuals and limit their application to the suppression of single and pre-defined attributes. Consequently, they do not take into account attributes that are not considered in the training. In this work, we presen…

We address the use of selfie ocular images captured with smartphones to estimate age and gender. Partial face occlusion has become an issue due to the mandatory use of face masks. Also, the use of mobile devices has exploded, with the pandemic further accelerating the migration to digital services. However, state-of-the-art solutions in related tasks such as identity or expression recognition employ large Convolutional Neural Networks, whose use in mobile devices is infeasible due to hardware limitations and size restrictions of downloadable applications. To counteract this, we adapt two exist…

Soft biometrics such as gait is widely used with face in surveillance tasks like person recognition and re-identification. Nevertheless, in practical scenarios, classical fusion techniques respond poorly to changes in individual users and in the external environment. To this end, we propose a novel adaptive multi-biometric fusion strategy for the dynamic incorporation of gait and face biometric cues by leveraging keyless attention deep neural networks. Biometric data, such as face images, are often associated with sensitive information (e.g medical, financial, personal government records). Hence, a data breach in a system storing such information can have devastating consequences. Deep learning is widely utilized for face recognition (FR); however, such models are vulnerable to backdoor attacks executed by malicious parties. Backdoor attacks cause a model to misclassify a particular class as a target class during recognition. This vulnerability can allow adversaries to gain access to highly sensitive data protected by biometric authenticatio…

This data serves the purposes of person authentication, as well as facial temperature estimation. We utilize depth data taken using an inexpensive RGB-D sensor to find the head pose of a subject. This allows the selection of video frames containing a frontal-view head pose for face recognition and face temperature reading. Usage of the frontal-view frames improves …

In the recent past, different researchers have proposed privacy-enhancing face recognition systems designed to conceal soft-biometric attributes at feature level. These works have reported impressive results, but generally did not consider specific attacks in their analysis of privacy protection. We introduce an attack on said schemes based on two observations: (1) highly similar facial representations usually originate from face images with similar soft-biometric attributes; (2) to achieve high recognition accuracy, robustness against intra-class variations within facial representations has t…

The ability to conduct meaningful comparisons and assessments will be crucial to successful deployment and increasing biometric adoption. The best modality used as unimodal biometric systems are unable to fully address the problem of higher recognition rate. Multimodal biometric systems are able to mitigate some of the limitations encountered in unimodal biometric systems, such as non-universality, distinctiveness, non-acceptability, noisy sensor…

The main scope of this chapter is to serve as an introduction to face presentation attack detection, including key resources and advances in the field in the last few years. The next pages present the different presentation attacks that a face recognition system can confront, in which an attacker presents to the sensor, mainly a camera, a Presentation Attack Instrument (PAI), that is generally a photograph, a video, or a mask, to try to impersonate a genuine user. First, we make an introduction of the current status of face recognition, its level of deployment, and its challenges. In addition,…

Deeply-learned face representations enable the success of current face recognition systems. Despite the ability of these representations to encode the identity of an individual, recent works have shown that more information is stored within, such as demographics, image characteristics, and social traits. This threatens the user's privacy, since for many applications these templates are expected to be solely used for recognition purposes. Knowing the encoded information in face templates helps to develop bias-mitigating and privacy-preserving face recognition technologies. This work aims to sup…
The vast progress in synthetic image synthesis enables the generation of facial images in high resolution and photorealism. In biometric applications, the main motivation for using synthetic data is to solve the shortage of publicly-available biometric data while reducing privacy risks when processing such sensitive information. These advantages are exploited in this work by simulating human face ageing with recent face age modification algorithms to generate mated samples, thereby studying the impact of ageing on the performance of an open-source biometric recognition system. Further, a real …
In this work, we propose a method to simultaneously perform (i) biometric recognition (i.e., identify the individual), and (ii) device recognition, (i.e., identify the device) from a single biometric image, say, a face image, using a one-shot schema. Such a joint recognition scheme can be useful in devices such as smartphones for enhancing security as well as privacy. We propose to automatically learn a joint representation that encapsulates both biometric-specific and sensor-specific features. We evaluate the proposed approach using iris, face and periocular images acquired using near-infrare…

We introduce a seemingly impossible task: given only an audio clip of someone speaking, decide which of two face images is the speaker. In this paper we study this, and a number of related cross-modal tasks, aimed at answering the question: how much can we infer from the voice about the face and vice versa? We study this task "in the wild", employing the datasets that are now publicly available for face recognition from static images (VGGFace) and speaker identification from audio (VoxCeleb). These provide training and testing scenarios for both static and dynamic testing of cross-modal matchi…
