In this paper, we performed a spectro-polarimetric analysis of the transient NS-LMXB XTE J1701-462 using IXPE, NICER, and NuSTAR data during its 2022 outburst. We report the significant detection of energy-dependent polarization in the X-ray signal from the source on 2022 September 29 in the $2-4$ keV, $4-8$ keV and $2-8$ keV energy bands with a polarization degree of $3.9 \pm 0.3$% (10.7$σ$), $5.5 \pm 0.6$% (9.1$σ$) and $4.5 \pm 0.4$% (12.6$σ$), respectively. The polarization angle in the overall $2-8$ keV band was found to be $\sim 143^{\circ}\pm 2^{\circ}$. The spectra were modelled using a combination of thermal emission from an accretion disc, Comptonized emission from a hot electron plasma (or corona) and a Gaussian line. From spectro-polarimetric analysis, the polarization degree due to the disc emission was found to have an upper limit of $\sim 11.5$%, and that of the Comptonized emission was constrained at $7.7 \pm 2.5$% (at the 3$σ$ level). The results suggest that the Comptonized component probably originates from a spreading-layer/boundary-layer above the neutron star surface. IXPE observation of the same source on 2022 October 8 does not show significant polarization which can be attributed to a weakening of the coronal Comptonized emission. The implication of these results are discussed.
We present an updated measurement of orbital period evolution of LMXB XTE J1710-281 by using eclipse timing technique. Using data obtained with XMM-Newton, Suzaku, RXTE, Chandra and AstroSat observatories, we report 21 new measurements of X-ray mid-eclipse times. We have discovered a third orbital period glitch in XTE J1710-281 with an F-test false alarm probability of ~0.7% for occurrence of the third glitch and report detection of four distinct epochs of orbital period in this system. This work presents a more robust estimation of occurrence of the second orbital period glitch. However, the …
We present an X-ray eclipse timing analysis of the transient low mass X-ray binary XTE J1710-281. We report observations of 57 complete X-ray eclipses, made with the proportional counter array detectors aboard the RXTE satellite. Using the eclipse timing technique, we have derived a constant orbital period of 0.1367109674 (3) d, during the period from MJD 52132 upto MJD 54410; and 1σ limits of -1.6 $\times$ 10^ -12 d d-1 and 0.2 $\times$ 10^ -12 d d-1 , on the period derivative. This puts constraints on the minimum timescale of secular orbital period evolution of 2.34 $\times$ 10^8 yr for a pe…
With Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) data, we systematically study the cross-correlation and time lag in all spectral states of black hole X-ray binary (BHXB) XTE J1859+226 in detail during its entire 1999-2000 outburst that lasted for 166 days. Anti-correlations and positive correlations and their respective soft and hard X-ray lags are only detected in the first 100 days of the outburst when the luminosity is high. This suggests that the cross-correlations may be related to high luminosity. Positive correlations are detected in every state of XTE J1859+226, viz., hard state, hard-intermed…
This work presents the broad-band time-averaged spectral analysis of neutron star low-mass X-ray binary, XTE J1710-281 by using the Suzaku archival data. The source was in a hard or an intermediate spectral state during this observation. This is the first time that a detailed spectral analysis of the persistent emission spectra of XTE J1710-281 has been done up to 30 keV with improved constraints on its spectral parameters. By simultaneously fitting the XIS (0.6-9.0 keV) and the HXD-PIN (15.0-30.0 keV) data, we have modelled the persistent spectrum of the source with models comprising a soft c…
We have carried out the first spectro-polarimetric study of the bright NS-LMXB GX 9+9 using IXPE and AstroSat observations. We report a significant detection of polarization of $1.7\pm 0.4\%$ over the $2-8$ keV energy band, with a polarization angle of $63^{\circ}\pm 7^{\circ}$. The polarization is found to be energy-dependent, with a $3σ$ polarization degree consistent with null polarization in $2-4$ keV, and $3.2\%$ in $4-8$ keV. Typical of the spectra seen in NS-LMXBs, we find that a combination of soft thermal emission from the accretion disc and Comptonized component from the optically th…
We report the first detection of highly ionized Fe species in the X-ray spectrum of the eclipsing and dipping Low Mass X-ray Binary XTE J1710-281. Using archival Chandra and Suzaku observations, we have carried out a spectro-timing analysis of the source during three different epochs. We compare the average orbital profile and obtain differences in pre-eclipse dip morphologies between different observation epochs. We observe an orbit to orbit evolution of the dips for the first time in this source in both the Chandra observations, reflecting changes in the structure of the accretion disc in ti…
We report on an analysis of RXTE data of the transient neutron star low-mass X-ray binary (NS-LMXB) XTE J1701-462, obtained during its 2006-2007 outburst. The X-ray properties of the source changed between those of various types of NS-LMXB subclasses. At high luminosities the source switched between two types of Z source behavior and at low luminosities we observed a transition from Z source to atoll source behavior. These transitions between subclasses primarily manifest themselves as changes in the shapes of the tracks in X-ray color-color and hardness-intensity diagrams, but they are accomp…
The X-ray transient XTE J1701-462 was the first source observed to evolve through all known subclasses of low-magnetic-field neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries (NS-LMXBs), as a result of large changes in its mass accretion rate. To investigate to what extent similar evolution is seen in other NS-LMXBs we have performed a detailed study of the color-color and hardness-intensity diagrams (CDs and HIDs) of Cyg X-2, Cir X-1, and GX 13+1 -- three luminous X-ray binaries, containing weakly magnetized neutron stars, known to exhibit strong secular changes in their CD/HID tracks. Using the full set …
Transient LMXBs that host neutron stars (NSs) provide excellent laboratories for probing the dense matter physics present in NS crusts. During accretion outbursts in LMXBs, exothermic reactions may heat the NS crust, disrupting the crust-core equilibrium. When the outburst ceases, the crust cools to restore thermal equilibrium with the core. Monitoring this evolution allows us to probe the dense matter physics in the crust. Properties of the deeper crustal layers can be probed at later times after the end of the outburst. We report on the unexpected late-time temperature evolution (>2000 days …
A number of low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) undergo "failed outbursts" in which, instead of evolving through the canonical states, they remain in a hard state throughout the outburst. While the sources of X-ray and radio emission in the hard state are relatively well understood, the origin of the near infrared (NIR) and optical emission is more complex though it likely stems from an amalgam of different emission processes, occurring as it does, at the intersecting wavelengths of those processes. We aim to identify the NIR/optical emission region(s) during a number of failed outbursts of one su…
The puzzling existence of a number of neutron stars that appear to be in the r-mode instability window supports further investigations of the r-mode frequencies, damping times and saturation amplitudes, especially now in light of the much anticipated and exciting results from LIGO and NICER. It has been suggested by Mahmoodifar and Strohmayer that coherent frequencies found in the RXTE data of the accreting millisecond pulsar XTE J1751-305 and during the 2001 superburst of 4U 1636-536 (one of the accreting sources to be observed by NICER) could, in fact, be r-modes. Based on these observations…
We monitored the quiescent thermal emission from neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries after active periods of intense activity in x-rays (outbursts). The theoretical modeling of the thermal relaxation of the neutron star crust may be used to establish constraints on the crust composition and transport properties, depending on the astrophysical scenarios assumed. We numerically simulated the thermal evolution of the neutron star crust and compared them with inferred surface temperatures for five sources: MXB 1659-29, KS 1731-260, EXO 0748-676, XTE J1701-462 and IGR J17480-2446. We find that…
Scorpius X-1 (Sco X-1) and X-ray transient (XTE) J1751-305 are Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs) that may emit continuous gravitational waves detectable in the band of ground-based interferometric observatories. Neutron stars in LMXBs could reach a torque-balance steady-state equilibrium in which angular momentum addition from infalling matter from the binary companion is balanced by angular momentum loss, conceivably due to gravitational-wave emission. Torque-balance predicts a scale for detectable gravitational-wave strain based on observed X-ray flux. This paper describes a search for Sco X-1…
Einstein's general relativity predicts that orbital motion of accreted gas approaching a neutron star (NS) in a NS low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) system occurs on a time scale proportional to the NS mass. Radiation of the gas accounts for most of the observed LMXBs variability. In more than a dozen of sources twin-peak quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) have been observed. Inspired by the expected proportionality between periods of orbital motion and NS mass we present a straightforward comparison among these sources. We investigate relations between QPO periods and their ratios and identify cha…
We report the discovery of kHz quasi periodic oscillations (QPOs) in three Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations of the low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) XTE J1701-407. In one of the observations we detect a kHz QPO with a characteristic frequency of 1153 +/- 5 Hz, while in the other two observations we detect twin QPOs at characteristic frequencies of 740 +/- 5 Hz, 1112 +/- 17 Hz and 740 +/- 11 Hz, 1098 +/- 5 Hz. All detections happen when XTE J1701-407 was in its high intensity soft state, and their single trial significance are in the 3.1-7.5 sigma range. The frequency difference in the centr…
We study the appearance of the neutron star - accretion disk system as seen by a distant observer in the UV/X-ray domain. The observed intensity spectra are computed assuming non-spherical geometry of the whole system, in which outgoing spectrum is not represented by the flux spectrum, the latter being valid for spherically symmetric objects. Intensity spectra of our model display double bumps in UV/X-ray energy domains. Such structure is caused by the fact that the the source is not spherically symmetric, and the proper integration of intensity over emitted area is needed to reproduce observe…
The near infrared (nIR)/optical counterparts of low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) are often observationally dim and reside in high source density fields which make their identification problematic; however, without such a counterpart identification we are unable to investigate many of the properties of LMXB systems. Here, in the context of a larger identification campaign, we examine the fields of four LMXB systems near the Galactic centre, in a bid to identify nIR/optical counterparts to the previously detected X-ray point sources. We obtain nIR/optical images of the fields with the ESO - New T…
We report results of the INTEGRAL Target of Opportunity observations of the transient X-ray burster XTE J1810-189. The observations were performed on April 3--6, 2008, soon after the discovery of the source and near the peak of its outburst. That time the source had a flux of about 50 mCrab and exhibited a hard Comptonized X-ray spectrum extending well above 100 keV. Being approximated by a power law with an exponetial cut-off in the broad 3--100 keV energy band it gave the average photon index $Γ\simeq 1.6$ and $kT_{cutoff}\simeq 67$ keV. We found only slight indications for changes in the in…
Several black hole low-mass X-ray binaries (BHLMXBs) show very fast orbital shrinkage, which is difficult to understand in the standard picture of the LMXB evolution. Based on the possible detection of a circumbinary (CB) disk in A0620-00 and XTE J1118+480, we investigate the influence of the interaction between a CB disk and the inner binary and calculate the evolution of the binary using the Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics. We consider two cases for the CB disk formation in which it is fed by mass loss during single outburst or successive outbursts in the LMXB. We show that w…
A thin viscous accretion disc around a Kerr black hole, which is warped due to the Lense-Thirring (LT) effect, was shown to cause the spin axis of the black hole to precess and align with the outer disc. We calculate the total LT torque acting on the black hole, and compute the alignment and precession time-scales for both persistent and transient accretors. In our analysis, we consider the contribution of the inner disc, as it can stay misaligned with the black hole spin for a reasonable range of parameter values. We find that the alignment time-scale increases with a decrease in the Kerr par…
We report on the results from our search for the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer detection of the Galactic low-mass X-ray binaries. Among 187 binaries catalogued in Liu et al. (2007), we find 13 counterparts and two candidate counterparts. For the 13 counterparts, two (4U~0614+091 and GX~339$-$4) have already been confirmed by previous studies to have a jet and one (GRS~1915+105) to have a candidate circumbinary disk, from which the detected infrared emission arose. Having collected the broad-band optical and near-infrared data in literature and constructed flux density spectra for the oth…
We present a study of the detectability of CO molecules in the Galactic interstellar medium using high-resolution X-ray spectra obtained with the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer. We analyzed 10 bright low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) to study the CO contribution in their line-of-sights. A total of 25 observations were fitted with the ISMabs X-ray absorption model which includes photoabsorption cross-sections for O I, O II, O III and CO. We performed a Monte-Carlo (MC) simulation analysis of the goodness of fit in order to estimate the significance of the CO detection. We determine th…
We study the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in neutron star low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) with a new magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model, in which the compressed magnetosphere is considered. The previous MHD model (Shi \& Li 2009) is re-examined and the relation between the frequencies of the kHz QPOs and the accretion rate in LMXBs is obtained. Our result agrees with the observations of six sources (4U 0614+09, 4U 1636--53, 4U 1608--52, 4U 1915--15, 4U 1728--34, XTE 1807--294) with measured spins. In this model the kHz QPOs originate from the MHD waves in the compressed magne…

Here, we present MAXI, SWIFT, NICER, NuSTAR and Chandra observations of the X-ray transient AT2019wey (SRGA J043520.9+552226, SRGE J043523.3+552234). From spectral and timing analyses we classify it as a Galactic low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) with a black hole (BH) or neutron star (NS) accretor. AT2019wey stayed in the low/hard state (LHS) from 2019 December to 2020 August 21, and the hard-intermediate state (HIMS) from 2020 August 21 to 2020 November. For the first six months of the LHS, AT2019wey had a flux of $\sim 1$ mCrab, and displayed a power-law X-ray spectrum with photon index $Γ= 1.8$…
