We model two systems of two conservation laws defined on complementary spatial intervals and coupled by a moving interface as a single non-autonomous port-Hamiltonian system, and provide sufficient conditions for its Kato-stability. An example shows that these conditions are quite restrictive. The more general question under which conditions an evolution family is generated remains open.
This thesis deals with the formulation and analysis of two systems of conservation laws defined on two complementary intervals and coupled by some moving interface as a single infinite-dimensional port-Hamiltonian system. This approach may be regarded as an extension of the well-established mathematical framework of boundary port-Hamiltonian systems, i.e., infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems interacting with its physical environment. In order to keep track of the power flow at the position of the interface, we introduce interface port variables. We provide a well-posed port-Hamiltonian mo…
We study the averaging of fronts moving with positive oscillatory normal velocity, which is periodic in space and stationary ergodic in time. The problem can be reformulated as the homogenization of coercive level set Hamilton-Jacobi equations with spatio-temporal oscillations. To overcome the difficulties due to the oscillations in time and the sublinear growth of the Hamiltonian, we first study the long time averaged behavior of the associated reachable sets using geometric arguments. The results are new for higher than one dimensions even in the space-time periodic setting.
We prove a global existence result for weak solutions to a one-dimensional free boundary problem with flux boundary conditions describing swelling along a halfline. Additionally, we show that solutions are not only unique but also depend continuously on data and parameters. The key observation is that the structure of our system of partial differential equations allows us to show that the moving a priori unknown interface never disappears. As main ingredients of the global existence proof, we rely on a local weak solvability result for our problem, uniform estimates of the solution, integral e…
The sharp-interface limits of a phase-field model with a generalized Navier slip boundary condition for moving contact line problem are studied by asymptotic analysis and numerical simulations. The effects of the {mobility} number as well as a phenomenological relaxation parameter in the boundary condition are considered. In asymptotic analysis, we focus on the case that the {mobility} number is the same order of the Cahn number and derive the sharp-interface limits for several setups of the boundary relaxation parameter. It is shown that the sharp interface limit of the phase field model is t…
This paper proposes a new general methodology for finite-time singularity formation for moving interface problems involving the incompressible Euler equations in the plane. The first problem considered is the two-phase Euler vortex sheets problem with surface tension for which is proved the finite time singularity of the natural norm of the problem for suitable initial data. This is in striking contrast with the case of finite time splash and splat singularity formation for the one phase Euler equations introduced in [4] and studied in a more general context in [8], for which the natural norm …
We deal with eigenvalue problems for the Laplacian with varying mixed boundary conditions, consisting in homogeneous Neumann conditions on a vanishing portion of the boundary and Dirichlet conditions on the complement. By the study of an Almgren type frequency function, we derive upper and lower bounds of the eigenvalue variation and sharp estimates in the case of a strictly star-shaped Neumann region.
