We investigate the superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) in disordered quasi-one dimensional systems using the density-matrix renormalization group method. Focusing on the case of an interacting spinful Hamiltonian at quarter-filling, we contrast the differences arising in the SIT when the parent non-interacting model features either flat or dispersive bands. Furthermore, by comparing disorder distributions that preserve or not SU(2)-symmetry, we unveil the critical disorder amplitude that triggers insulating behavior. While scaling analysis suggests the transition to be of a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type for all models (two lattices and two disorder types), only in the flat-band model with Zeeman-like disorder the critical disorder is nonvanishing. In this sense, the flat-band structure does strengthen superconductivity. For both flat and dispersive band models, i) in the presence of SU(2)-symmetric random chemical potentials, the disorder-induced transition is from superconductor to insulator of singlet pairs; ii) for the Zeeman-type disorder, the transition is from superconductor to insulator of unpaired fermions. In all cases, our numerical results suggest no intermediate disorder-driven metallic phase.
We explore the effect of inhomogeneity on electronic properties of the two-dimensional Hubbard model on a square lattice using dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The inhomogeneity is introduced via modulated lattice hopping such that in the extreme inhomogeneous limit the resulting geometry is a Lieb lattice, which exhibits a flat-band dispersion. The crossover can be observed in the uniform sublattice magnetization which is zero in the homogeneous case and increases with the inhomogeneity. Studying the spatially resolved frequency-dependent local self-energy, we find a crossover from Fermi-l…
One novel arena for designing superconductors with high $T_C$ is the flat-band systems. A basic idea is that flat bands, arising from quantum mechanical interference, give unique opportunities for enhancing $T_C$ with (i) many pair-scattering channels between the dispersive and flat bands, and (ii) an even more interesting situation when the flat band is topological and highly entangled. Here we compare two routes, which comprise a multi-band system with a flat band coexisting with dispersive ones, and a one-band case with a portion of the band being flat. Superconductivity can be induced in b…
We systematically study the effect of disorder and interactions on a quasi-one dimensional diamond chain possessing flat bands. Disorder localizes all the single particle eigenstates, while at low disorder strengths we obtain weak flat-band based localization (FBL), at high disorder strengths, we see conventional Anderson localization (AL). The compactly localized (CL) eigenstates of flat bands show a persisting oscillatory recurrence in the study of single-particle wavepacket dynamics. For low disorder a damped oscillatory recurrence behavior is observed which is absent for high disorder. Non…
We study the localization properties of the two-dimensional Lieb lattice and its extensions in the presence of disorder using transfer matrix method and finite-size scaling. We find that all states in the Lieb lattice and its extensions are localized for $W \geq 1$. Clear differences in the localization properties between disordered flat band and disordered dispersive bands are identified. Our results complement previous experimental studies of clean photonic Lieb lattices and provide information about their stability with respect to disorder.
Topological flat bands, such as the band in twisted bilayer graphene, are becoming a promising platform to study topics such as correlation physics, superconductivity, and transport. In this work, we introduce a generic approach to construct two-dimensional (2D) topological quasi-flat bands from line graphs and split graphs of bipartite lattices. A line graph or split graph of a bipartite lattice exhibits a set of flat bands and a set of dispersive bands. The flat band connects to the dispersive bands through a degenerate state at some momentum. We find that, with spin-orbit coupling (SOC), th…
We make the first testable predictions for the local two-particle spectral function of a disordered s-wave superconductor, probed by scanning Josephson spectroscopy (sjs), providing complementary information to scanning tunneling spectroscopy (sts). We show that sjs provides a direct map of the local superconducting order parameter that is found to be anticorrelated with the gap map obtained by sts. Furthermore, this anticorrelation increases with disorder. For the momentum resolved spectral function, we find the Higgs mode shows a non-dispersive subgap feature at low momenta, spectrally separ…
We study two models of correlated bond- and site-disorder on the kagome lattice considering both translationally invariant and completely disordered systems. The models are shown to exhibit a perfectly flat ground state band in the presence of disorder for which we provide exact analytic solutions. Whereas in one model the flat band remains gapped and touches the dispersive band, the other model has a finite gap, demonstrating that the band touching is not protected by topology alone. Our model also displays fully saturated ferromagnetic groundstates in the presence of repulsive interactions, …
We present a thorough tight-binding analysis of the band structure of a wide variety of lattices belonging to the class of honeycomb and Kagome systems including several mixed forms combining both lattices. The band structure of these systems are made of a combination of dispersive and flat bands. The dispersive bands possess Dirac cones (linear dispersion) at the six corners (K points) of the Brillouin zone although in peculiar cases Dirac cones at the center of the zone $(Γ$ point) appear. The flat bands can be of different nature. Most of them are tangent to the dispersive bands at the cent…
We develop a framework to describe a wide class of flat-band models, with and without a translational symmetry, by using "molecular orbitals" introduced in the prior work (HATSUGAI Y. and MARUYAMA I., \textit{EPL}, \textbf{95}, (2011) 20003). Using the molecular-orbital representation, we shed new light on the band-touching problem between flat and dispersive bands. We show that the band touching occurs as a result of collapse, or the linearly dependent nature, of molecular orbitals. Conversely, we can gap out the flat bands by modulating the molecular orbitals so that they do not collapse, wh…

We clarify the interplay and competition between disorder and flat band in the Creutz ladder with inter-particle interactions focusing on the system's dynamics. Without disorder, the Creutz ladder exhibits flat-band many-body localization (FMBL). In this work, we find that disorder generates drastic effects on the system, i.e., addition of it induces a thermal phase first and further increase of it leads the system to the conventional many-body-localized (MBL) phase. The competition gives novel localization properties and unconventional quench dynamics to the system. We first draw the global s…
Motivated by the experimental progress in controlling the properties of the energy bands in superconductors, significant theoretical efforts have been devoted to study the effect of the quantum geometry and the flatness of the dispersion on the superfluid weight. In conventional superconductors, where the energy bands are wide and the Fermi energy is large, the contribution due to the quantum geometry is negligible, but in the opposite limit of flat-band superconductors the superfluid weight originates purely from the quantum geometry of Bloch wave functions. Here, we study how the energy band…
Flat bands and dispersive Dirac bands are known to coexist in the electronic bands in a two-dimensional kagome lattice. Including the relativistic spin-orbit coupling, such systems often exhibit nontrivial band topology, allowing for gapless edge modes between flat bands at several locations in the band structure, and dispersive bands or at the Dirac band crossing. Here, we theoretically demonstrate that a multiorbital system on a kagome lattice is a versatile platform to explore the interplay between nontrivial band topology and electronic interaction. Specifically, here we report that the mu…

While long-theorized, the direct observation of multiple highly dispersive C$_{60}$ valence bands has eluded researchers for more than two decades due to a variety of intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Here we report a realization of multiple highly dispersive (330-520 meV) valence bands in pure thin film C$_{60}$ on a novel substrate--the three-dimensional topological insulator Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$--through the use of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and first-principles calculations. The effects of this novel substrate reducing C$_{60}$ rotational disorder are discussed. Our resul…
Motivated by the recent experimental realizations of hyperbolic lattices in circuit quantum electrodynamics and in classical electric-circuit networks, we study flat bands and band-touching phenomena in such lattices. We analyze noninteracting nearest-neighbor hopping models on hyperbolic analogs of the kagome and dice lattices with heptagonal and octagonal symmetry. We show that two characteristic features of the energy spectrum of those models, namely the fraction of states in the flat band as well as the number of touching points between the flat band and the dispersive bands, can both be c…
Among condensed matter systems, Mott insulators exhibit diverse properties that emerge from electronic correlations. In itinerant metals, correlations are usually weak, but can also be enhanced via geometrical confinement of electrons, that manifest as `flat' dispersionless electronic bands. In the fast developing field of topological materials, which includes Dirac and Weyl semimetals, flat bands are one of the important components that can result in unusual magnetic and transport behaviour. To date, characterisation of flat bands and their magnetism is scarce, hindering the design of novel m…
On the basis of the "molecular-orbital" representation which describes generic flat-band models, we propose a systematic way to construct a class of flat-band models with finite-range hoppings that have topological natures. In these models, the topological natures are encoded not into the flat band itself but into the dispersive bands touching the flat band. Such a band structure may become a source of exotic phenomena arising from the combination of flat bands, topology and correlations.
The Mielke checkerboard is known to be one of the simplest two-band lattice models exhibiting an energetically flat band that is in touch with a quadratically dispersive band in the reciprocal space, i.e., its flat band is not isolated. Motivated by the growing interest in understanding the origins of flat-band superfluidity in various contexts, here we provide an in-depth analysis showing how the mean-field BCS correlations prevail in this particular model. Our work reveals the quantum-geometric origin of flat-band superfluidity through uncovering the leading role by a band-structure invarian…
The Kondo effect of a single magnetic impurity embedded in the Lieb lattice is studied by the numerical renormalization group. When the band flatness is present in the local density of states, it quenches the participation of all dispersive electrons in the Kondo singlet formation, and reduces the many-body Kondo problem to a two-electron molecular Kondo problem. The two-electron analog of the many-body Kondo singlet, a quantum entanglement of two spins, is stable at low temperature, and the impurity contributions to thermodynamical and dynamical quantities are qualitatively different from tha…
Quantum geometry has been identified as an important ingredient for the physics of quantum materials and especially of flat-band systems, such as moiré materials. On the other hand, the coupling between light and matter is of key importance across disciplines and especially for Floquet and cavity engineering of solids. Here we present fundamental relations between light-matter coupling and quantum geometry of Bloch wave functions, with a particular focus on flat-band and moiré materials, in which the quenching of the electronic kinetic energy could allow one to reach the limit of strong light-…
In typical flat-band models, defined as nearest-neighbor tight-binding models, flat bands are usually pinned to the special energies, such as top or bottom of dispersive bands, or band-crossing points. In this paper, we propose a simple method to tune the energy of flat bands without losing the exact flatness of the bands. The main idea is to add farther-neighbor hoppings to the original nearest-neighbor models, in such a way that the transfer integral depends only on the Manhattan distance. We apply this method to several lattice models including the two-dimensional kagome lattice and the thr…
