We study the localization properties of the two-dimensional Lieb lattice and its extensions in the presence of disorder using transfer matrix method and finite-size scaling. We find that all states in the Lieb lattice and its extensions are localized for $W \geq 1$. Clear differences in the localization properties between disordered flat band and disordered dispersive bands are identified. Our results complement previous experimental studies of clean photonic Lieb lattices and provide information about their stability with respect to disorder.
We study the localization properties and the Anderson transition in the 3D Lieb lattice $\mathcal{L}_3(1)$ and its extensions $\mathcal{L}_3(n)$ in the presence of disorder. We compute the positions of the flat bands, the disorder-broadened density of states and the energy-disorder phase diagrams for up to 4 different such Lieb lattices. Via finite-size scaling, we obtain the critical properties such as critical disorders and energies as well as the universal localization lengths exponent $ν$. We find that the critical disorder $W_c$ decreases from $\sim 16.5$ for the cubic lattice, to $\sim 8…
Uncorrelated disorder in generalized 3D Lieb models gives rise to the existence of bounded mobility edges, destroys the macroscopic degeneracy of the flat bands and breaks their compactly-localized states. We now introduce a mix of order and disorder such that this degeneracy remains and the compactly-localized states are preserved. We obtain the energy-disorder phase diagrams and identify mobility edges. Intriguingly, for large disorder the survival of the compactly-localized states induces the existence of delocalized eigenstates close to the original flat band energies -- yielding seemingly…
In itinerant systems, electron-electron interactions may lead to the formation of local magnetic moments and their effective exchange coupling, which in turn gives rise to long-range magnetic order. Therefore, when moment formation is weakened, such as in the single-band Hubbard model on a square lattice with the on-site repulsion being randomly switched off on a fraction $x$ of sites, magnetic order is suppressed beyond some critical $x_c$, which was found to lie below the classical percolation threshold, $x_c^\text{(perc,sq)}$. Here we study dilute magnetism in flat band systems, namely in t…
We study the localization properties of generalized, two- and three-dimensional Lieb lattices, $\mathcal{L}_2(n)$ and $\mathcal{L}_3(n)$, $n= 1, 2, 3$ and $4$, at energies corresponding to flat and dispersive bands using the transfer matrix method (TMM) and finite size scaling (FSS). We find that the scaling properties of the flat bands are different from scaling in dispersive bands for all $\mathcal{L}_d(n)$. For the $d=3$ dimensional case, states are extended for disorders $W$ down to $W=0.01 t$ at the flat bands, indicating that the disorder can lift the degeneracy of the flat bands quickly…
Interacting two-component Fermi gases loaded in a one-dimensional (1D) lattice and subjected to an harmonic trapping potential exhibit interesting compound phases in which fluid regions coexist with local Mott-insulator and/or band-insulator regions. Motivated by experiments on cold atoms inside disordered optical lattices, we present a theoretical study of the effects of a correlated random potential on these ground-state phases. We employ a lattice version of density-functional theory within the local-density approximation to determine the density distribution of fermions in these phases. Th…
Inspired by the topological insulator circuit proposed and experimentally verified by Jia., et al. \cite{1}, we theoretically realized the topological Lieb lattice, a line centered square lattice with rich topological properties, in a radio-frequency circuit. We open the topological nontrivial band-gap through specific capacitor-inductor network, which resembles adding intrinsic spin orbit coupling term into the tight binding model. Finally, we discuss the extension of the $ϕ=π/2$ phase change of hopping between sites to arbitrary value, and investigate the topological phase transition of the …
While the coherent potential approximation (CPA) is the prevalent method for the study of disordered electronic systems, it fails to capture non-local correlations and Anderson localization. To incorporate such effects, we extend the dual fermion approach to disordered non-interacting systems using the replica method. Results for single- and two- particle quantities show good agreement with cluster extensions of the CPA; moreover, weak localization is captured. As a natural extension of the CPA, our method presents an alternative to the existing cluster theories. It can be used in various appl…

Several lattices, such as the dice or the Lieb lattice, possess Dirac cones and a flat band crossing the Dirac point, whose effective model is the pseudospin-1 Dirac-Weyl equation. We investigate the fate of the flat band in the presence of disorder by focusing on the density of states (DOS) and dc conductivity. While the central hub-site does not reveal the presence of the flat band, the sublattice resolved DOS on the non-central sites exhibits a narrow peak with height ~ 1/\sqrt{g} with g the dimensionless disorder variance. Although the group velocity is zero on the flat band, the dc conduc…

We analyze the effect of quenched disorder on spin-1/2 quantum magnets in which magnetic frustration promotes the formation of local singlets. Our results include a theory for 2d valence-bond solids subject to weak bond randomness, as well as extensions to stronger disorder regimes where we make connections with quantum spin liquids. We find, on various lattices, that the destruction of a valence-bond solid phase by weak quenched disorder leads inevitably to the nucleation of topological defects carrying spin-1/2 moments. This renormalizes the lattice into a strongly random spin network with i…
We study the two-dimensional paramagnetic Anderson-Hubbard model using an extension of dynamical mean-field theory that allows us to treat disorder and strong electronic correlations on equal footing. We investigate the scaling of the inverse participation ratio at quarter- and half-filling and find a nonmonotonic dependence of the localization length on the interaction strength. We do not find evidence for an insulator-metal transition. The disorder potential becomes unscreened near the Mott transition. Furthermore, strong correlations suppress the Altshuler-Aronov density of states anomaly n…
We introduce the notion of transmission time to study the dynamics of disordered quantum spin chains and prove results relating its behavior to many-body localization properties. We also study two versions of the so-called Local Integrals of Motion (LIOM) representation of spin chain Hamiltonians and their relation to dynamical many-body localization. We prove that uniform-in-time dynamical localization expressed by a zero-velocity Lieb-Robinson bound implies the existence of a LIOM representation of the dynamics as well as a weak converse of this statement. We also prove that for a class of s…
Controllable Rydberg atom arrays have provided new insights into fundamental properties of quantum matter both in and out of equilibrium. In this work, we study the effect of experimentally relevant positional disorder on Rydberg atoms trapped in a 2D square lattice under anti-blockade (facilitation) conditions. We show that the facilitation conditions lead the connectivity graph of a particular subspace of the full Hilbert space to form a 2D Lieb lattice, which features a singular flat band. Remarkably, we find three distinct regimes as the disorder strength is varied: a critical regime, a de…
We investigate the superfluid-insulator quantum phase transition of one-dimensional bosons with off-diagonal disorder by means of large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations. For weak disorder, we find the transition to be in the same universality class as the superfluid-Mott insulator transition of the clean system. The nature of the transition changes for stronger disorder. Beyond a critical disorder strength, we find nonuniversal, disorder-dependent critical behavior. We compare our results to recent perturbative and strong-disorder renormalization group predictions. We also discuss experimental im…
We discuss some properties of the generalized entropies, called Renyi entropies and their application to the case of continuous distributions. In particular it is shown that these measures of complexity can be divergent, however, their differences are free from these divergences thus enabling them to be good candidates for the description of the extension and the shape of continuous distributions. We apply this formalism to the projection of wave functions onto the coherent state basis, i.e. to the Husimi representation. We also show how the localization properties of the Husimi distribution o…
We study short-range quantum spin systems with Gaussian disorder. We obtain quantum mechanical extensions of the Ghirlanda-Guerra identities. We discuss properties of overlap spin operators with these identities.
We study the effect of uncorrelated random disorder on the temperature dependence of the superfluid stiffness in the two-dimensional classical XY model. By means of a perturbative expansion in the disorder potential, equivalent to the T-matrix approximation, we provide an extension of the effective-medium-theory result able to describe the low-temperature stiffness, and its separate diamagnetic and paramagnetic contributions. These analytical results provide an excellent description of the Monte Carlo simulations for two prototype examples of uncorrelated disorder. Our findings offer an intere…
We develop a consistent treatment of disorder effects in strong coupling superconductors. We use two different approaches, starting either from above or below the transition temperature, and show their equivalence. The normal state approach is a natural extension of a recently developed non-perturbative resummation technique. For the superconducting state we extend the standard Eliashberg theory to include disorder effects. We obtain a compact set of equations which are physically transparent and easy to use. They correctly reproduce the usual strong coupling results and disordered perturbatio…
Viscoelastic flows transition from steady to time-dependent, chaotic dynamics under critical flow conditions, but the implications of geometric disorder for flow stability in these systems are unknown. Utilizing microfluidics, we flow a viscoelastic fluid through arrays of cylindrical pillars, which are perturbed from a hexagonal lattice with various degrees of geometric disorder. Small disorder, corresponding to ~ 10% of the lattice constant, delays the transition to higher flow speeds, while larger disorders exhibit near-complete suppression of chaotic velocity fluctuations. We show that the…
We develop a real space cluster extension of the typical medium theory (cluster-TMT) to study Anderson localization. By construction, the cluster-TMT approach is formally equivalent to the real space cluster extension of the dynamical mean field theory. Applying the developed method to the 3D Anderson model with a box disorder distribution, we demonstrate that cluster-TMT successfully captures the localization phenomena in all disorder regimes. As a function of the cluster size, our method obtains the correct critical disorder strength for the Anderson localization in 3D, and systematically re…
We consider radial tree extensions of one-dimensional quasi-periodic Schroedinger operators and establish the stability of their absolutely continuous spectra under weak but extensive perturbations by a random potential. The sufficiency criterion for that is the existence of Bloch-Floquet states for the one dimensional operator corresponding to the radial problem.
