Magnetized plasmas are well known to exhibit a rich spectrum of collective modes. Here, we focus on the density modes in dense or cold plasmas, where strong coupling effects alter the mode spectrum known from traditional weakly coupled plasmas. In particular, we study the dynamic structure factor (DSF) of the magnetized one-component plasma with molecular dynamics simulations. Extending our previous results [H.~Kählert and M.~Bonitz, Phys. Rev. Research \textbf{2022}, 4, 013197], it is shown that Bernstein modes can be observed in the weakly magnetized regime, where they are found below the upper hybrid frequency, provided the coupling strength is sufficiently low. We investigate the DSF for a variety of different wave numbers and plasma parameters and show that even small magnetization can give rise to a strong zero-frequency mode perpendicular to the magnetic field and change the dispersion as well as the damping of the upper hybrid mode.
When magnetic monopoles are introduced in plasma equations, the propagation of electromagnetic waves is modified. In this work is shown that this modification leads to the emergence of a ponderomotive force which induces a magnetization of the plasma. As a result, a cyclotron frequency is induced in electrons. This frequency is proportional to the square of the magnetic charge.
It is demonstrated that targets with a broken rotational symmetry may facilitate generation of a strong axial (poloidal) magnetic field. An intense laser beam irradiating such a target creates intense electron currents carrying vorticity and producing strong spontaneous magnetic fields. Combined with a laser electron acceleration, such targets may be used for generation and guiding of magnetized, collimated particle or plasma beams.
The interaction of two lasers with a difference frequency near that of the ambient plasma frequency produces beat waves that can resonantly accelerate thermal electrons. These beat waves can be used to drive electron current and thereby embed magnetic fields into the plasma [D. R. Welch et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 225002 (2012)]. In this paper, we present two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations of the beat-wave current-drive process over a wide range of angles between the injected lasers, laser intensities, and plasma densities. We discuss the application of this technique to the magnet…

In this paper, the evolution of the induced axial magnetization due to the propagation of an electromagnetic (em) wave along the static background magnetic field in a two-component plasma has been investigated using the Block equation. The evolution process induces a strong magnetic anisotropy in the plasma medium, depending nonlinearly on the incident wave amplitude. This induced magnetic anisotropy can modify the dispersion relation of the incident em wave, which has been obtained in this paper. In the low frequency Alfven wave limit, this dispersion relation shows that the resulting phase v…
We use PIC modeling to identify the acceleration mechanism responsible for the observed generation of super-hot electrons in ultra-intense laser-plasma interactions with solid targets with pre-formed plasma. We identify several features of direct laser acceleration (DLA) that drive the generation of super-hot electrons. We find that, in this regime, electrons that become super-hot are primarily injected by a looping mechanism that we call loop-injected direct acceleration (LIDA).
Counterstreaming plasmas exhibits an electromagnetic unstable mode of filamentation type, which is responsible for the magnetization of plasma system. It is shown that filamentation instability becomes significantly faster when plasma is hotter in the streaming direction. This is relevant for astrophysical sources, where strong magnetic fields are expected to exist and explain the nothermal emission observed.
We simulate decaying turbulence in electron-positron pair plasmas using a fully- kinetic particle-in-cell (PIC) code. We run two simulations with moderate-to-low plasma beta. The energy decay rate is found to be similar in both the cases. The perpendicular wave-number spectrum of magnetic energy shows a slope of k^-1.3 in both the cases. The particle energy distribution function shows the formation of a non-thermal feature in the case of lower plasma beta, with a slope close to E^-1. The role of thin turbulent current sheets in this process is investigated. The heating by E_{\parallel}.J_{\par…
We give a short review of a number of different models for treating magnetization effects in plasmas. In particular, the transition between kinetic models and fluid models is discussed. We also give examples of applications of such theories. Some future aspects are discussed.
The viscosity tensor of the magnetized one-component plasma, consisting of five independent shear viscosity coefficients, a bulk viscosity coefficient, and a cross coefficient, is computed using equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations and the Green-Kubo relations. A broad range of Coulomb coupling and magnetization strength conditions are studied. Magnetization is found to strongly influence the shear viscosity coefficients when the gyrofrequency exceeds the Coulomb collision frequency. Three regimes are identified as the Coulomb coupling strength and magnetization strength are varied. The …
The effect of spin of particles in the propagation of plasma waves is studied using a semi-classical kinetic theory for a magnetized plasma. We focus in the simple damping effects for the electrostatic wave modes besides Landau damping. Without taking into account more quantum effects than spin contribution to Vlasov's equation, we show that spin produces a new damping or instability which is proportional to the zeroth order magnetization of the system. This correction depends on the electromagnetic part of the wave which is coupled with the spin vector.
In a two-ion-species plasma with disparate ion masses, heavy ions tend to concentrate in the low-temperature region of collisionally magnetized plasma and in the high-temperature region of collisionally unmagnetized plasma, respectively. Moreover, collisional magnetization can be determined as the ratio of the light ion gyrofrequency to the collision frequency of light and heavy ion species, and the behavior of this effect in the intermediate regime of partially magnetized plasma is predominantly dependent on this Hall parameter. Multi-ion cross-field transport has been described before in the…
Strongly coupled plasmas in which the interaction energy exceeds the kinetic energy play an important role in many astrophysical and laboratory systems including compact stars, laser plasmas and dusty plasmas. They exhibit many unusual collective properties, such as liquid or crystalline behaviour, peculiar oscillation spectra and transport properties. Recently, strongly coupled plasmas were studied in the presence of a strong magnetic field by computer simulations, and strong modifications of their transport properties and oscillation spectra were observed. While strong magnetization is commo…
Coulomb collisions in plasmas are typically modeled using the Boltzmann collision operator, or its variants, which apply to weakly magnetized plasmas in which the typical gyroradius of particles significantly exceeds the Debye length. Conversely, O'Neil has developed a kinetic theory to treat plasmas that are so strongly magnetized that the typical gyroradius of particles is much smaller than the distance of closest approach in a binary collision. Here, we develop a generalized collision operator that applies across the full range of magnetization strength. To demonstrate novel physics associa…
We study in a fully kinetic framework the generation of seed magnetic fields through the Weibel instability driven in an initially unmagnetized plasma by a large-scale shear force. We develop an analytical model that describes the development of thermal pressure anisotropy via phase mixing, the ensuing exponential growth of magnetic fields in the linear Weibel stage, and its saturation when the seed magnetic fields become strong enough to instigate gyromotion of particles and thereby inhibit their free-streaming. The predicted scaling dependencies of the saturated seed fields on key parameters…
The electrostatic potential of a moving dust grain in a complex plasma with magnetized ions is computed using linear response theory, thereby extending our previous work for unmagnetized plasmas [P. Ludwig et al., New J. Phys. 14, 053016 (2012)]. In addition to the magnetic field, our approach accounts for a finite ion temperature as well as ion-neutral collisions. Our recently introduced code \texttt{Kielstream} is used for an efficient calculation of the dust potential. Increasing the magnetization of the ions, we find that the shape of the potential crucially depends on the Mach number $M$.…
It is shown that an unmagnetized nonrelativistic thermal electron-proton plasma spontaneously emits aperiodic turbulent magnetic field fluctuations of strength $|δB|=9β_eg^{1/3}W_e^{1/2}$ G, where $β_e$ is the normalized thermal electron temperature, $W_e$ the thermal plasma energy density and $g$ the plasma parameter. Aperiodic modes fluctuate only in space, but are not propagating. For the unmagnetized intergalactic medium, immediately after the reionization onset, the field strength from this mechanism is about $4.7\cdot 10^{-16}$ G, too weak to affect the dynamics of the plasma. The shear …
The standard equilibrium equation for magnetized plasma is extended to account for the magnetic polarization force. A factor of the pressure gradient arising from the magnetic decomposition of the Hall term survives the limit of vanishing magnetization and is canceled by a contribution from the magnetic polarization force, such that the proposed equation reduces to the standard form in the free current limit. Comparison of the solutions for an axially symmetric plasma column indicates agreement with the free current limit for vanishing magnetization and variation in the field and current profi…
Plasmas that are strongly magnetized in the sense that the gyrofrequency exceeds the plasma frequency exhibit novel transport properties that are not well understood. As a representative example, we compute the friction force acting on a massive test charge moving through a strongly coupled and strongly magnetized one-component plasma using a generalized Boltzmann kinetic theory. Recent works studying the weakly coupled regime have shown that strong magnetization leads to a transverse component of the friction force that is perpendicular to both the Lorentz force and velocity of the test charg…
A theoretical model is developed and evaluated using a Vlasov-Poisson treatment to calculate radiofrequency (RF) electric field heating rates for magnetized electrons in neutral plasma when the magnetic and electric field directions are colinear and when the RF is of sufficiently high frequency. This calculation reduces to the theory for magnetized longitudinal AC conductivity introduced by Oberman and Shure [C. Oberman and F. Shure, Phys. Fluids 6, 834-838 (1963)] in the low-amplitude limit when the electron oscillation velocity is much less than the thermal velocity. For electron coupling st…
The linear drift-tearing mode is analyzed for different regimes of the plasma-$β$, ion-skin-depth parameter space with an unreduced, extended-MHD model. New dispersion relations are found at moderate plasma $β$ and previous drift-tearing results are classified as applicable at small plasma $β$. The drift stabilization of the mode in the regimes varies from non-existent/weak to complete. As the diamagnetic-drift frequency is proportional to the plasma $β$, verification exercises with unreduced, extended-MHD models in the small plasma-$β$ regimes are impractical. The new dispersion relations in …
The Jeans instability is analyzed for dense magnetohydrodynamic plasmas with intrinsic magnetization, the latter due to collective electron spin effects. Furthermore, effects of electron tunneling as well as the Fermi pressure are included. It is found that the intrinsic magnetization of the plasma will enhance the Jeans instability, and can significantly modify the structure of the instability spectra. Implications and limitations of our results are discussed, as well as possible generalizations.
The inclusion of plasma magnetization in the equations of stationary equilibrium is derived, and its effect on the determination of axisymmetric equilibrium calculated. A factor of 2 on the pressure gradient arises in the equilibrium equation from the force felt by the dipole moment density. The algebraic and differential equation formulations are compared both with and without consideration of magnetization, revealing the effects of both magnetization and magnetic field variation on the equilibrium, which become more pronounced for high pressures in a weak external field. The equivalence of t…
Propagation of right-hand circularly polarized laser into highly magnetized over-dense collisional plasma is analytically studied from basic equations. Highly magnetized plasma with density of 10^23 cm^-3 is efficiently heated from 100 eV to 1 keV within depth of around 20 μ{m} in one nanosecond by Nd:YAG laser with moderate irradiance of around 10^14 Wcm^-2.
Through an extended kinetic model, we study the nonlinear generation of quasi-static magnetic fields by high-frequency fields in a plasma, taking into account the effects of the electron spin. It is found that although the largest part of the nonlinear current in a moderate density, moderate temperature plasma is due to the classical terms, the spin may still give a significant contribution to the magnetic field generation mechanism. Applications of our results are discussed.
Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that a fundamental symmetry of plasma kinetic theory is broken at moderate to strong Coulomb coupling: the collision rate depends on the signs of the colliding charges. This symmetry breaking is analogous to the Barkas effect observed in charged-particle stopping experiments and gives rise to significantly enhanced electron-ion collision rates. It is expected to affect any neutral plasma with moderate to strong Coulomb coupling such as ultracold neutral plasmas (UNP) and the dense plasmas of ICF and laser-matter interaction experiments. The physical mechan…
Quantum plasmas is a rapidly expanding field of research, with applications ranging from nanoelectronics, nanoscale devices and ultracold plasmas, to inertial confinement fusion and astrophysics. Here we give a short systematic overview of quantum plasmas. In particular, we analyze the collective effects due to spin using fluid models. The introduction of an intrinsic magnetization due to the plasma electron (or positron) spin properties in the magnetohydrodynamic limit is discussed. Finally, a discussion of the theory and examples of applications is given.
Reduced equations that describe low-frequency plasma dynamics play an important role in our understanding of plasma behavior over long time scales. One of the oldest paradigms for reduced plasma dynamics involves the ponderomotive Hamiltonian formulation of the oscillation-center dynamics of charged particles (over slow space-time scales) in a weakly-nonuniform background plasma perturbed by an electromagnetic field with fast space-time scales. These reduced plasma equations are derived here by Lie-transform and variational methods for the case of a weakly-magnetized background plasma. In part…
We present the first 2X2V continuum Vlasov-Maxwell simulations of interpenetrating, unmagnetized plasmas to study the competition between two-stream, Oblique, and filamentation modes in the weakly relativistic regime. We find that after nonlinear saturation of the fastest-growing two-stream and Oblique modes, the effective temperature anisotropy, which drives current filament formation via the secular Weibel instability, has a strong dependence on the internal temperature of the counter-streaming plasmas. The effective temperature anisotropy is significantly more reduced in colder than in hott…
Equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations are used to calculate the thermal conductivity of the one component plasma (OCP) via the Green-Kubo formalism over a broad range of Coulomb coupling strength, $0.1\leΓ\le180$. These simulations address previous discrepancies between computations using equilibrium versus nonequilibrium methods. Analysis of heat flux autocorrelation functions show that very long ($6\times10^5ω_p^{-1}$) time series are needed to reduce the noise level to allow $\lesssim2\%$ accuracy. The new simulations provide the first accurate data for $Γ\lesssim 1$. This enables a te…
Photon bursts with a wavelength smaller than the plasma inter-particle distance can drive plasma wakes via Compton scattering. We investigate this fundamental process analytically and numerically for different photon frequencies, photon flux, and plasma magnetization. Our results show that Langmuir and extraordinary modes are driven efficiently when the photon energy density lies above a certain threshold. The interaction of photon bursts with magnetized plasmas is of distinguished interest as the generated extraordinary modes can convert into pure electromagnetic waves at the plasma/vacuum bo…
Magnetic reconnection, a plasma process converting magnetic energy to particle kinetic energy, is often invoked to explain magnetic energy releases powering high-energy flares in astrophysical sources including pulsar wind nebulae and black hole jets. Reconnection is usually seen as the (essentially 2D) nonlinear evolution of the tearing instability disrupting a thin current sheet. To test how this process operates in 3D, we conduct a comprehensive particle-in-cell simulation study comparing 2D and 3D evolution of long, thin current sheets in moderately-magnetized, collisionless, relativistica…
This paper investigates the density expansion of the thermodynamic properties of a two component plasma under the influence of a weak constant uniform magnetic field. We start with the fugacity expansion for the Helmholtz free energy. The leading terms with respect to the density are calculated by a perturbation expansion with respect to the magnetic field. We find a new magnetic virial function for a low density plasma which is exact in quadratic order with respect to the magnetic field. Using these results we compute the magnetization and the magnetic susceptibility.
The process of dynamical reduction of the Vlasov-Maxwell equations leads to the introduction of classical {\it zitterbewegung} effects in reduced plasma dynamics. These effects manifest themselves in the form of an asymmetric canonical energy-momentum tensor involving the decoupling of the reduced kinetic momentum ${\bf p}$ from the reduced velocity ${\bf u}$ (i.e., ${\bf u}\btimes{\bf p} \neq 0$) as well as reduced polarization and magnetization effects. The reduced intrinsic torque generated by the antisymmetric part of the canonical energy-momentum tensor, which is calculated from the reduc…
Parameters of a dense 10^13-10^14cm^-3) multicomponent gas-metal plasma in the pulsed reflex discharge with a moderate power (W \leq 10 MW) have been studied. The dynamics of the plasma density in time, the mass-element composition of the plasma generated, the radial distribution of the electron density in plasma, the rotation velocity and the rotation frequency of a plasma layer with n_p \geq n_crit, the radial electric field strength, and the recombination factor at the stage of plasma density decay in the discharge have been determined. The plasma particle separation factor has been evaluat…
A generalized Ohm's law is derived to treat strongly magnetized plasmas in which the electron gyrofrequency significantly exceeds the electron plasma frequency. The frictional drag due to Coulomb collisions between electrons and ions is found to shift, producing an additional transverse resistivity term in the generalized Ohm's law that is perpendicular to both the current ($\vc{J}$) and the Hall ($\vc{J} \times \vc{B}$) direction. In the limit of very strong magnetization, the parallel resistivity is found to increase by a factor of 3/2, and the perpendicular resistivity to scale as $\ln (ω_{…
We consider wakefield generation in plasmas by electromagnetic pulses propagating perpendicular to a strong magnetic field, in the regime where the electron cyclotron frequency is equal to or larger than the plasma frequency. PIC-simulations reveal that for moderate magnetic field strengths previous results are re-produced, and the wakefield wavenumber spectrum has a clear peak at the inverse skin depth. However, when the cyclotron frequency is significantly larger than the plasma frequency, the wakefield spectrum becomes broad-band, and simultaneously the loss rate of the driving pulse is muc…
We have considered linear kinetic theory including the electron spin properties in a magnetized plasma. The starting point is a mean field Vlasov-like equation, derived from a fully quantum mechanical treatment, where effects from the electron spin precession and the magnetic dipole force is taken into account. The general conductivity tensor is derived, including both the free current contribution, as well as the magnetization current associated with the spin contribution. We conclude the paper with an extensive discussion of the quantum-mechanical boundary where we list parameter conditions …
I will discuss a new method for calculating transport quantities, such as the charged particle stopping power, in a weakly to moderately coupled plasma. This method, called dimensional continuation, lies within the framework of convergent kinetic equations, and it is powerful enough to allow for systematic perturbative expansions in the plasma coupling constant. In particular, it provides an exact evaluation of the stopping power to leading and next-to-leading order in the plasma coupling, with the systematic error being of cubic order. Consequently, the calculation is near-exact for a weakly …
The results of a recent fluid theory for the multipole modes of a Yukawa plasma in a spherical confinement [H. Kählert and M. Bonitz, Phys. Rev. E \textbf{82}, 036407 (2010)] are compared with molecular dynamics simulations and the exact $N$-particle eigenmodes in the crystalline phase. Simulations confirm the existence of high order modes found in cold fluid theory. We investigate the influence of screening, coupling and friction on the mode spectra in detail. Good agreement between theory and simulation is found for weak to moderate screening and low order modes. The relations between the br…
We investigate the formation of collisionless magnetized shocks triggered by the interaction between magnetized plasma flows and miniature-sized (order of plasma kinetic-scales) magnetic obstacles resorting to massively parallel, full particle-in-cell simulations, including the electron kinetics. The critical obstacle size to generate a compressed plasma region ahead of these objects is determined by independently varying the magnitude of the dipolar magnetic moment and the plasma magnetization. We find that the effective size of the obstacle depends on the relative orientation between the dip…
In a recent paper (Phys. Plasmas 25, 061203, 2018), the authors have presented the analysis of the electric ion drift velocity experienced by heavy ions created in a plasma submitted to a low magnetic field. Unfortunately, they have used the classical ExB drift formula that is valid only in slab geometry. The authors have not taken into account that the cylindrical geometry induces a slow electric drift of the ions around the axis of the column. Moreover, the low magnetization of the ions induces a Larmor radius that is larger than the diameter of the plasma column. The movement of the ions im…
This paper uses extended-magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulations to explore an extreme magnetized plasma regime realisable by cylindrical implosions on the OMEGA laser facility. This regime is characterized by highly compressed magnetic fields (greater than 10~kT across the fuel), which contain a significant proportion of the implosion energy and induce large electrical currents in the plasma. Parameters governing the different magnetization processes such as Ohmic dissipation and suppression of instabilities by magnetic tension are presented, allowing for optimization of experiments to study s…
We present experimental data providing evidence for the formation of transient ($\sim 20~μ$s) plasmas that are simultaneously weakly magnetized (i.e., Hall magnetization parameter $ωτ> 1$) and dominated by thermal pressure (i.e., ratio of thermal-to-magnetic pressure $β> 1$). Particle collisional mean free paths are an appreciable fraction of the overall system size. These plasmas are formed via the head-on merging of two plasmas launched by magnetized coaxial guns. The ratio $λ_{gun}=μ_0 I_{gun}/ψ_{gun}$ of gun current $I_{gun}$ to applied magnetic flux $ψ_{gun}$ is an experimental knob for e…
High-energy astrophysical systems frequently contain collisionless relativistic plasmas that are heated by turbulent cascades and cooled by emission of radiation. Understanding the nature of this radiative turbulence is a frontier of extreme plasma astrophysics. In this paper, we use particle-in-cell simulations to study the effects of external inverse Compton radiation on turbulence driven in an optically thin, relativistic pair plasma. We focus on the statistical steady state (where injected energy is balanced by radiated energy) and perform a parameter scan spanning from low magnetization t…
