I revisited the age of the Small Magellanic Cloud cluster HW 42, whose previous estimates differ in more than 6 Gyr, thus challenging the most updated knowledge of the SMC star formation history. I performed an analysis of number stellar density profiles at different brightness levels; carried out a field star decontamination of the cluster color-magnitude diagram; and estimated the cluster fundamental parameters from the minimization of likelihood functions and their uncertainties from standard bootstrap methods. I conclude that HW 42 is a 6.2$^{\rm +1.6}_{\rm -1.3}$ Gyr old ([Fe/H] = -0.89$^{\rm +0.10}_{\rm -0.11}$ dex) SMC cluster projected on to a SMC composite star field population which shows variations in magnitude, color, and stellar density of Main Sequence stars. The present outcome solves the conundrum of the previous age discrepancies and moves HW~42 to a region in the SMC age-metallicity relationship populated by star clusters.
The origin of the gas in between the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) -- known as the `Magellanic Bridge' (MB) -- is puzzling. Numerical simulations suggest that the MB formed from tidally stripped gas and stars in a recent interaction between the MCs. However, the apparent lack of stripped intermediate- or old-age stars associated with the MB is at odds with this picture. In this paper, we present the first results from the MAGellanic Inter-Cloud program (MAGIC) aimed at probing the stellar populations in the inter-cloud region. We present observations of the stellar populations in two large fields lo…
The YMCA (Yes, Magellanic Clouds Again) and STEP ({The SMC in Time: Evolution of a Prototype interacting late-type dwarf galaxy) projects are deep g,i photometric surveys carried out with the VLT Survey Telescope (VST) and devoted to study the outskirts of the Magellanic System. A main goal of YMCA and STEP is to identify candidate stellar clusters and complete their census out to the outermost regions of the Magellanic Clouds. We adopted a specific over-density search technique coupled with a visual inspection of the color magnitude diagrams (CMDs) to select the best candidates and estimate t…
We confirm the existence of a second Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) star cluster, KMHK 1592, with an age that falls in the middle of the so-called LMC star cluster age gap, a long period of time (~ 4 - 11 Gyr) where no star cluster had been uncovered, except ESO121-SC03. The age (8.0+-0.5 Gyr) and the metallicity ([Fe/H]=-1.0+-0.2 dex) of KMHK1592 were derived from the fit of theoretical isochrones to the intrinsic star cluster colour-magnitude diagram sequences, which were unveiled using a robust star-by-star membership probability procedure. Because of the relative low brightness of the star c…
We present a new study of the spatial distribution and ages of the star clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). To detect and estimate the ages of the star clusters we rely on the new fully-automated method developed by Bitsakis et al. (2017). Our code detects 1319 star clusters in the central 18 deg$^{2}$ of the SMC we surveyed (1108 of which have never been reported before). The age distribution of those clusters suggests enhanced cluster formation around 240 Myr ago. It also implies significant differences in the cluster distribution of the bar with respect to the rest of the galaxy, …
In this paper, we study the age and spatial distributions of Cepheids in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) as a function of their ages using the data from the OGLE III photometric catalogue. A period-age (PA) relation derived for the Classical Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) has been used to find the ages of Cepheids. The age distribution of the SMC Classical Cepheids is found to have a peak at log(Age) = 8.40+/-0.10 which suggests that a major star formation event might have occurred in the SMC at about 250+/-50 Myrs ago. It is believed that this star forming burst had been trigge…
Revealing the Chemical Structure of the Magellanic Clouds with APOGEE. I. Calculating Individual Stellar Ages of RGB Stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud
Recently, a noticeable number of new star clusters was identified in the outskirts of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) populating the so-called star cluster age gap, a space of time (~ 4-12 Gyr) where the only known star cluster is up-to-date ESO121-SC\,03. We used Survey of the Magellanic Stellar History (SMASH) DR2 data sets, as well as those employed to identify these star cluster candidates, to produce relatively deep color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of 17 out of 20 discovered age gap star clusters with the aim of investigating them in detail. Our analysis relies on a thorough CMD cleaning …
We present Gemini South GMOS g,i photometry of 14 intermediate-age Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) star clusters, namely: NGC 2155, 2161, 2162, 2173, 2203, 2209, 2213, 2231, 2249, Hodge 6, SL 244, 505, 674, and 769, as part of a continuing project to investigate the extended Main Sequence Turnoff (EMSTO) phenomenon. Extensive artificial star tests were made over the observed field of view. These tests reveal the observed behaviour of photometric errors with magnitude and crowding. The cluster stellar density radial profiles were traced from star counts over the extent of the observed field. We ad…
We present results from the largest CaII triplet line metallicity study of Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) field red giant stars to date, involving 3037 objects spread across approximately 37.5 sq. deg., centred on this galaxy. We find a median metallicity of [Fe/H]=-0.99+/-0.01, with clear evidence for an abundance gradient of -0.075+/-0.011 dex / deg. over the inner 5 deg. We interpret the abundance gradient to be the result of an increasing fraction of young stars with decreasing galacto-centric radius, coupled with a uniform global age-metallicity relation. We also demonstrate that the age-me…
We present results from Washington CT1 photometry for eleven star fields located in the western outskirts of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), which cover angular distances to its centre from 2 up to 13 degrees (~ 2.2 - 13.8 kpc). The colour- magnitude diagrams, cleaned from the unavoidable Milky Way (MW) and background galaxy signatures, reveal that the most distant dominant main sequence (MS) stellar populations from the SMC centre are located at an angular distance of ~ 5.7 deg (6.1 kpc); no sign of farther clear SMC MS is visible other than the residuals from the MW/background field contam…
We present our new, fully-automated method to detect and measure the ages of star clusters in nearby galaxies, where individual stars can be resolved. The method relies purely on statistical analysis of observations and Monte-Carlo simulations to define stellar overdensities in the data. It decontaminates the cluster color-magnitude diagrams and, using a revised version of the Bayesian isochrone fitting code of Ramirez-Siordia et al., estimates the ages of the clusters. Comparisons of our estimates with those from other surveys show the superiority of our method to extract and measure the ages…
We report on the magnitude of the intrinsic [Fe/H] spread in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) intermediate-age massive clusters NGC 339, 361, Lindsay 1 and 113, respectively. In order to measure the cluster metallicity dispersions, we used accurate Stromgren photometry of carefully selected cluster red giant branch (RGB) stars. We determined the Fe-abundance spreads by employing a maximum likelihood approach. The spreads obtained using the more accurate photometry of the brighter RGB stars resulted to be marginal (~ 0.05+-0.03 dex) for NGC 339 and NGC 361, while for Lindsay 1 and Lindsay 113 w…
In this paper we study the Cepheids distribution in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) as a function of their ages using data from the OGLE III photometric catalogue. To determine age of the Pop I Cepheids, we derived a period-age (PA) relationship using the Cepheids found in the LMC star clusters. We find two peaks in the period distribution at logP =0.49+/-0.01 and logP =0.28+/-0.01 days which correspond to fundamental and first overtone pulsation modes, respectively. Ages of the Cepheids are used to understand star formation scenario in the LMC in last 30-600 Myr. The age distribution of the …
We combine a number of recent studies of the extended main sequence turn-off (eMSTO) phenomenon in intermediate age stellar ($1-2$ Gyr) clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) in order to investigate its origin. By employing the largest sample of eMSTO LMC clusters so far used, we show that cluster core radii, masses, and dynamical state are not related to the genesis of eMSTOs. Indeed, clusters in our sample have core radii, masses and age-relaxation time ratios in the range $\approx$ 2--6 pc, 3.35- 5.50 (log($M_{cls}$/$M_\odot$) and 0.2-8.0, respectively. These results imply that the eM…
The X-ray emission from a supernova remnant is a powerful diagnostic of the state of its shocked plasma. The temperature and the emission measure are related to the energy of the explosion, the age of the remnant, and the density of the surrounding medium. Here we present the results of a study of the remnant population of the Small Magellanic Cloud. Progress in X-ray observations of remnants has resulted in a sample of 20 remnants in the Small Magellanic Clound with measured temperatures and emission measures. We apply spherically symmetric supernova remnant evolution models to this set of re…
The outer northeastern region of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) is populated by a shell-like overdensity whose nature was recently investigated. We analyzed twenty catalogued star clusters projected onto it from Survey of the MAgellanic Stellar History data sets. After carrying out a cleaning of field stars in the star cluster colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), and deriving their astrophysical properties from the comparison between the observed and synthetic CMDs, we found that four objects are not genuine star clusters, while the remaining ones are young star clusters (11, age $\sim$ 30-200 …
We present spectroscopic and photometric results for the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) cluster Bruck 88. From the comparison of the cluster integrated spectrum with template cluster spectra we found that the Milky Way globular cluster template spectra are the ones which best resemble it. However, the extracted cluster colour magnitude diagram reveals that Bruck 88 is a young cluster (log(t) = 8.1 +- 0.1). The derived cluster age is compatible with the presence of a Bright Red Giant (BRG) star located ~ 2.6 arcsec in the sky from the cluster centre. We serendipitously observed HW 33, a star clus…
Context: Analysis of ages and metallicities of star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds provide information for studies on the chemical evolution of the Clouds and other dwarf irregular galaxies. Aims: The aim is to derive ages and metallicities from integrated spectra of 14 star clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud, including a few intermediate/old age star clusters. Methods: Making use of a full-spectrum fitting technique, we compared the integrated spectra of the sample clusters to three different sets of single stellar population models, using two fitting codes available in the literature.…
We study 147 star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) in order to determine their mean metallicities and ages, as well as the mean metallicities of 80 surrounding fields. We construct an age-metallicity relation (AMR) for the clusters in the LMC. For this purpose, we used Strömgren photometry obtained with the SOI camera on the 4.1 m SOAR telescope. We found the mean metallicity and age for 110 star clusters. For the remaining 37, we provide an age estimation only. To the best of our knowledge, for 29 clusters from our sample, we provide both the metallicity and age for the first time…
We present results on the age and metallicity estimates of the poorly studied LMC cluster SL 529, from CCD SDSS gr photometry obtained at the Gemini South telescope with the GMOS attached. The cluster MSTO region possesses an extended structure, with an age spread (~ 0.5 Gyr) bigger than the mean age width of known EMSTO LMC clusters. We report for the first time a mean cluster age of 2.25 Gyr and a mean cluster metallicity of Z=0.004, which place it as the most metal-poor and oldest cluster in the EMSTO LMC cluster group. In addition, the cluster RC appears to be formed by two concentrations …
Recent observations of intermediate age (1 - 3 Gyr) massive star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) have revealed that the majority possess bifurcated or extended main-sequence turn-off (EMSTO) morphologies. This effect can be understood to arise from subsequent star formation amongst the stellar population with age differences between constituent stars amounting to 50 - 300 Myr. Age spreads of this order are similarly invoked to explain the light element abundance variations witnessed in ancient globular clusters. In this paper we explore the proposition that the clusters exhibiting…
The Magellanic Clouds host a large population of massive (> 10^4 Msun) star clusters with ages ranging from a few Myr to 12 Gyr. In nearly all cases, close inspection of their CMDs reveals features that deviate from expectations of a classic isochrone. Young (< 2 Gyr) clusters show extended main sequence turnoffs and in some cases split/dual main sequences. Clusters older than ~ 2 Gyr show splitting in the red giant branches when viewed in UV filters that are sensitive to abundance variations (in particular nitrogen). A distribution of stellar rotation rates appears to be the cause of the comp…
Aim: We aim to estimate the age and reddening parameters of already identified star clusters within the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) in a consistent way using available photometric data, classify them based on their mass and strength, and study their spatio- temporal distribution. Methods: We have used a semi-automated quantitative method, developed in the first paper of this series (Paper I), to estimate the cluster parameters using the V and I band photometric data from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) III survey. Results: We estimated parameters of 179 star clusters (17 n…
New star cluster candidates projected toward the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (L/SMC) have been recently discovered from relatively deep imaging surveys. We here conduct a sound analysis of 24 star cluster candidates located in the outer regions of the L/SMC using PSF photometry produced by the Survey of the Magellanic Stellar History. With only one exception, the studied objects resulted to be genuine stellar aggregates. We conclude on their physical reality once their observed color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) were statistically decontaminated by the presence of field stars, and the resul…
In this paper we present high resolution VLT/FLAMES observations of red giant stars in the massive intermediate-age Large Magellanic Cloud star cluster NGC 1846, which, on the basis of its extended main-sequence turn-off (EMSTO), possesses an internal age spread of ~300 Myr. We describe in detail our target selection and data reduction procedures, and construct a sample of 21 stars possessing radial velocities indicating their membership of NGC 1846 at high confidence. We consider high-resolution spectra of the planetary nebula Mo-17, and conclude that this object is also a member of the clust…
The age distribution of star clusters in nearby galaxies plays a crucial role in evaluating the lifetimes and disruption mechanisms of the clusters. Two very different results have been found recently for the age distribution chi(t) of clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We found that chi(t) can be described approximately by a power law chi(t) propto t^{gamma}, with gamma -0.8, by counting clusters in the mass-age plane, i.e., by constructing chi(t) directly from mass-limited samples. Gieles & Bastian inferred a value of gamma~, based on the slope of the relation between the maximum …
We derive the spatially-resolved star formation history (SFH) for a $96$ deg$^2$ area across the main body of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), using the near-infrared photometry from the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds (VMC). The data and analyses are characterised by a great degree of homogeneity and a low sensitivity to the interstellar extinction. 756 subregions of size $0.125$ deg$^2$ -- corresponding to projected sizes of about $296\times322\,\mathrm{pc}^{2}$ in the LMC -- are analysed. The resulting SFH maps, with typical resolution of $0.2$--$0.3$ dex in logarithm of age, reveal …
To enlarge our growing sample of well-studied star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), we present CCD Washington CT1 photometry to T1 ~ 23 in the fields of twenty-three mostly unstudied clusters located in the inner disc and outer regions of the LMC. We estimated cluster radii from star counts. Using the cluster Washington (T1,C-T1) colour-magnitude diagrams, statistically cleaned from field star contamination, we derived cluster ages and metallicities from a comparison with theoretical isochrones of the Padova group. Whenever possible, we also derived ages using delta_T1 - the magni…
We present deep Washington photometry of 45 poorly populated star cluster candidates in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We have performed a systematic study to estimate the parameters of the cluster candidates by matching theoretical isochrones to the cleaned and de-reddened cluster color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs). We were able to estimate the basic parameters for 33 clusters, out of which, 23 are identified as single clusters and 10 are found to be members of double clusters. Other 12 cluster candidates have been classified as possible clusters/asterisms. About 50% of the true clusters are …

The origin of the gas in between the Magellanic Clouds (MCs), known as the Magellanic Bridge (MB), has always been the subject of controversy. To shed light into this, we present the results from the MAGIC II project aimed at probing the stellar populations in ten large fields located perpendicular to the main ridge-line of HI in the Inter-Cloud region. We secured these observations of the stellar populations in between the MCs using the WFI camera on the 2.2 m telescope in La Silla. Using colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), we trace stellar populations across the Inter-Cloud region. In good agr…
We present flux-calibrated integrated spectra in the optical range (3700-6800 Å) obtained at Complejo Astronómico El Leoncito (CASLEO, Argentina) for a sample of 10 concentrated star clusters belonging to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). No previous data exist for two of these objects (SL 142 and SL 624), while most of the remaining clusters have been only poorly studied. We derive simultaneously foreground $E(B-V)$ reddening values and ages for the cluster sample by comparing their integrated spectra with template LMC cluster spectra and with two different sets of simple stellar population m…
In this work we analyse Colour-Magnitude Diagrams (CMDs) of catalogued star clusters located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), from a YJKs photometric data set obtained by the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) survey of the Magellanic Clouds system (VMC). We studied a total of 98 objects of small angular size, typically ~ 11.6 pc in diameter projected towards both uncrowded tile LMC 8_8 and crowded tile LMC 5_5. They populate relatively crowded LMC fields with significant fluctuations in the stellar density, the luminosity function, and the colour distribution as w…
We present results based on YJKs photometry of star clusters located in the outermost, eastern region of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We analysed a total of 51 catalogued clusters whose colour--magnitude diagrams (CMDs), having been cleaned from field-star contamination, were used to assess the clusters' reality and estimate ages of the genuine systems. Based on CMD analysis, 15 catalogued clusters were found to be possible non-genuine aggregates. We investigated the properties of 80% of the catalogued clusters in this part of the SMC by enlarging our sample with previously obtained clust…
Intermediate-age star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds harbour signatures of the multiple stellar populations long thought to be restricted to old globular clusters. We compare synthetic horizontal branch models with Hubble Space Telescope photometry of clusters in the Magellanic Clouds, with age between ~2 and ~10 Gyr, namely NGC 121, Lindsay 1, NGC 339, NGC 416, Lindsay 38, Lindsay 113, Hodge 6 and NGC 1978. We find a clear signature of initial helium abundance spreads (delta(Y)) in four out of these eight clusters (NGC 121, Lindsay 1, NGC 339, NGC 416) and we quantify the value of delta(Y)…
We investigate the degree of spatial correlation among extended structures in the LMC and SMC. To this purpose we work with sub-samples characterised by different properties such as age and size, taken from the updated catalogue of Bica et al. or gathered in the present work. The structures are classified as star clusters or non-clusters (basically, nebular complexes and their stellar associations). The radius distribution functions follow power-laws ($dN/dR\propto R^{-α}$) with slopes and maximum radius ($R_{max}$) that depend on object class (and age). Non-clusters are characterised by $α\ap…
We present for the first time CCD SDSS gr photometry, obtained at the Gemini South telescope with the GMOS attached, of stars in the field of the poorly studied star clusters NGC1768, HS85, SL676, NGC2107, NGC2190, and SL866, which are distributed in the main body of the Large Magellanic Cloud. We applied a subtraction procedure to statistically clean the cluster CMDs from field star contamination. In order to disentangle cluster features from those belonging to their surrounding fields, we applied a subtraction procedure which makes use of variable cells to reproduce the field star Color-Magn…
Recent studies have shown that an extended main-sequence turn-off is a common feature among intermediate-age clusters (1--3 Gyr) in the Magellanic Clouds. Multiple-generation star formation and stellar rotation or interacting binaries have been proposed to explain the feature. However, it remains controversial in the field of stellar populations. Here we present the main results of an ongoing star formation among older star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Cross-matching the positions of star clusters and young stellar objects has yielded 15 matches with 7 located in the cluster center.…
We model the dynamical interaction between the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds and their corresponding stellar cluster populations. Our goal is to explore whether the lack of old clusters ($\gtrsim 7$ Gyr) in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) can be the result of the capture of clusters by the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), as well as their ejection due to the tidal interaction between the two galaxies. For this purpose we perform a suite of numerical simulations probing a wide range of parameters for the orbit of the SMC about the LMC. We find that, for orbital eccentricities $e \geq 0.4$, ap…
The Magellanic Clouds are nearby dwarf irregular galaxies whose morphologies show different properties when traced by different stellar populations, making them an important laboratory for studying galaxy morphologies. We study the morphology of the Magellanic Clouds using data from the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds system (VMC). We used about $10$ and $2.5$ million sources across an area of $\sim105$ deg$^2$ and $\sim42$ deg$^2$ towards the Large and Small Magellanic Cloud (LMC and SMC), respectively. We estimated median ages of stellar populations occupying different regions of the n…
Extended main sequence turn-offs (eMSTOs) are a common feature in color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of young and intermediate-age star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds. The nature of eMSTOs is still debated. The most popular scenarios are extended star formation and ranges of stellar rotation rates. Here we study implications of a kink feature in the main sequence (MS) of young star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). This kink shows up very clearly in new \emph{Hubble Space Telescope} observations of the 700-Myr-old cluster NGC 1831, and is located below the region in the CMD where m…
The Magellanic System (MS) encompasses the nearest neighbors of the Milky Way, the Large (LMC) and Small (SMC) Magellanic Clouds, and the Magellanic Bridge (MBR). This system contains a diverse sample of star clusters. Their parameters, such as the spatial distribution, chemical composition and age distribution yield important information about the formation scenario of the whole Magellanic System. Using deep photometric maps compiled in the fourth phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-IV) we present the most complete catalog of star clusters in the Magellanic System ever…
An increasing number of young massive clusters (YMCs) in the Magellanic Clouds have been found to exhibit bimodal or extended main sequences (MSs) in their color--magnitude diagrams (CMDs). These features are usually interpreted in terms of a coeval stellar population with different stellar rotational rates, where the blue and red MS stars are populated by non- (or slowly) and rapidly rotating stellar populations, respectively. However, some studies have shown that an age spread of several million years is required to reproduce the observed wide turn-off regions in some YMCs. Here we present t…
We present results from photometric and spectroscopic data obtained with SOAR and Gemini observatory facilities in the field of a recently discovered star cluster. The cluster, projected towards the Eastern side of the outer disc of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), was originally placed nearly 10 kpc behind the LMC with an age and metallicity typical of the innermost LMC star cluster population. We assigned radial velocity (RV) memberships to stars observed spectroscopically, and derived the cluster age and distance from theoretical isochrone fitting to the cluster colour-magnitude diagram. T…
The star cluster (SC) age distribution of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) exhibits a gap from $\sim$ 4 to 10 Gyr ago, with an almost total absence of SCs. Within this age gap, only two confirmed SCs have been identified hitherto. Nonetheless, the star field counterpart does not show the same characteristics, making the LMC a peculiar galaxy where star formation history and cluster formation history appear to differ significantly. We re-analyzed the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of the KMHK 1762 SC by using the deep optical photometry provided by the "Yes, Magellanic Clouds Again" survey, to r…
Recent studies have shown that the observed main-sequence turn-off (MSTO) in colour-magnitude diagrams of intermediate age (1-2 Gyr) clusters in the LMC are broader than would be nominally expected for a simple stellar population. This has led to the suggestion that such clusters may host multiple stellar populations, with age spreads of 100-500 Myr. However, at intermediate ages, spreads of this magnitude are difficult to discern and alternative explanations have been put forward (e.g., stellar rotation, interacting binaries). A prediction of the age-spread scenario is that younger clusters i…
The star formation (SFH) and chemical enrichment (CEH) histories of Local Group galaxies are traditionally studied by analyzing their resolved stellar populations in a form of color-magnitude diagrams obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. Star clusters can be studied in integrated light using ground-based telescopes to much larger distances. They represent snapshots of chemical evolution of their host galaxy at different ages. Here we present a simple theoretical framework for the chemical evolution based on the instantaneous recycling approximation (IRA) model. We infer a CEH from a SFH a…
The level of central segregation of Blue Straggler stars proved to be an excellent tracer of the dynamical evolution of old star clusters (the so-called "dynamical clock"), both in the Milky Way and in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The $A^{+}$ parameter, used to measure the Blue Stragglers degree of segregation, has in fact been found to strongly correlate with the parent cluster central relaxation time. Here we studied the Blue-Straggler population of two young stellar systems in the Small Magellanic Cloud, namely NGC 339 (which is 6 Gyr old) and NGC 419 (with an age of only 1.5 Gyr), in order …
This is the second paper in our series about the search for multiple populations in Magellanic Cloud star clusters using the Hubble Space Telescope. Here we report the detection of multiple stellar populations in the colour-magnitude diagrams of the intermediate-age clusters Lindsay 1, NGC 416 and NGC 339. With ages between 6.0 and 7.5 Gyr, these clusters are the youngest ones in which chemical abundance spreads have been detected so far. This confirms that the appearance of multiple populations is not restricted to only ancient globular clusters, but may also be a common feature in clusters a…
