In stochastic modeling of infectious diseases, it has been established that variations in infectivity affect the probability of a major outbreak, but not the shape of the curves during a major outbreak, which is predicted by deterministic models [Diekmann et al., 2012]. However, such conclusions are derived under idealized assumptions such as the population size tending to infinity, and the individual degree of infectivity only depending on variations in the infectiousness period. In this paper we show that the same conclusions hold true in a finite population representing a medium size city, where the degree of infectivity is determined by the offspring distribution, which we try to make as realistic as possible for SARS-CoV-2. In particular, we consider distributions with fat tails, to incorporate the existence of super-spreaders. We also provide new theoretical results on convergence of stochastic models which allows to incorporate any offspring distribution with a finite variance.
In recent years, it became clear that super-spreader events play an important role, particularly in the spread of airborne infections. We investigate a novel model for super-spreader events, not based on a heterogeneous contact graph but on a random contact rate: Many individuals become infected synchronously in single contact events. We use the branching-process approach for contact tracing to analyze the impact of super-spreader events on the effect of contact tracing. Here we neglect a tracing delay. Roughly speaking, we find that contact tracing is more efficient in the presence of super-s…
In individual SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks, the count of confirmed cases and deaths follow a Gompertz growth function for locations of very different sizes. This lack of dependence on region size leads us to hypothesize that virus spread depends on universal properties of the network of social interactions. We test this hypothesis by simulating the propagation of a virus on networks of different topologies. Our main finding is that Gompertz growth observed for early outbreaks occurs only for a scale-free network, in which nodes with many more neighbors than average are common. These nodes that have ve…
Viral transmission pathways have profound implications for public safety; it is thus imperative to establish a complete understanding of viable infectious avenues. Mounting evidence suggests SARS-CoV-2 can be transmitted via the air; however, this has not yet been demonstrated. Here we quantitatively analyze virion accumulation by accounting for aerosolized virion emission and destabilization. Reported superspreading events analyzed within this framework point towards aerosol mediated transmission of SARS-CoV-2. Virion exposure calculated for these events is found to trace out a single value, …

This article contains a series of analyses done for the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak in Rio Grande do Sul (RS) in the south of Brazil. These analyses are focused on the high-incidence cities such as the state capital Porto Alegre and at the state level. We provide methodological details and estimates for the effective reproduction number $R_t$, a joint analysis of the mobility data together with the estimated $R_t$ as well as ICU simulations and ICU LoS (length of stay) estimation for hospitalizations in Porto Alegre/RS.
Several European countries have suspended the inoculation of the AstraZeneca vaccine out of suspicion of causing deep vein thrombosis. In this letter we report some Fermi estimates performed using a stochastic model aimed at making a risk-benefit analysis of the interruption of the delivery of the AstraZeneca vaccine in France and Italy. Our results clearly show that excess deaths due to the interruption of the vaccination campaign injections largely overrun those due to thrombosis even in worst case scenarios of frequency and gravity of the vaccine side effects.
While the SARS-CoV-2 keeps spreading world-wide, comparing its evolution across different nations is a timely challenge of both theoretical and practical importance. The large variety of dissimilar and country-dependent epidemiological factors, in fact, makes extremely difficult to understand their influence on the epidemic trends within a unique and coherent framework. We present a geometric framework to characterize, in an integrated and low-dimensional fashion, the epidemic plume-like trajectories traced by the infection rate, $I$, and the fatality rate, $D$, in the $(I,D)$ plane. Our analy…
SARS-CoV-2 causing COVID-19 disease has moved rapidly around the globe, infecting millions and killing hundreds of thousands. The basic reproduction number, which has been widely used and misused to characterize the transmissibility of the virus, hides the fact that transmission is stochastic, is dominated by a small number of individuals, and is driven by super-spreading events (SSEs). The distinct transmission features, such as high stochasticity under low prevalence, and the central role played by SSEs on transmission dynamics, should not be overlooked. Many explosive SSEs have occurred in …
The novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 has rapidly emerged as a significant threat to global public health, in particular because -- as is not uncommon with novel pathogens -- there is no effective pharmaceutical treatment or prophylaxis to the viral syndrome it causes. In the absence of such specific treatment modalities, the mainstay of public health response rests on non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs), such as social distancing. This paper contributes to the understanding of social distancing against SARS-CoV-2 by quantitatively analysing the statistical dynamics of disease propagation as a …
Currently, many countries are considering the introduction of tracing software on mobile smartphones with the main purpose to inform and alarm the mobile app user. Here, we demonstrate that, in addition to alarming and informing, mobile tracing can detect nearly all users that are infected by SARS-CoV-2. Our algorithm BETIS (Bayesian Estimation for Tracing Infection States) makes use of self-reports of the user's health status. Then, BETIS guarantees that almost all SARS-CoV-2 infections of the group of users can be detected. Furthermore, BETIS estimates the virus prevalence in the whole popul…
This paper shows that the generalized logistic distribution model is derived from the well-known compartment model, consisting of susceptible, infected and recovered compartments, abbreviated as the SIR model, under certain conditions. In the SIR model, there are uncertainties in predicting the final values for the number of infected population and the infectious parameter. However, by utilizing the information obtained from the generalized logistic distribution model, we can perform the SIR numerical computation more stably and more accurately. Applications to severe acute respiratory syndrom…
An investigation on the correlation between the strong alcoholic drinking and SARS-Cov-2 uninfection rate is carried out. The investigation is done through a simple survey in China based on the social media software Weixin and the survey mini program Wenjuanxin, during 15:00 Jan.1, 2023 to 12:35 Jan.3, 2023. From the $211$ survey questionnaires collected, we find a significant positive correlation between the frequent (no less than three times a week) strong liquor (higher than $40\%$ alcoholic content in volume) drinking and the higher SARS-Cov-2 uninfection rate ($38.6\%$ compared to the val…
In this work we propose the design principles of a stochastic graph-based model for the simulation of SARS-CoV-2 transmission. The proposed approach incorporates three sub-models, namely, the spatial model, the mobility model, and the propagation model, in order to develop a realistic environment for the study of the properties exhibited by the spread of SARS-CoV-2. The spatial model converts images of real cities taken from Google Maps into undirected weighted graphs that capture the spatial arrangement of the streets utilized next for the mobility of individuals. The mobility model implement…
We describe some properties of the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic that reveal its behavior as a complex system. The propagation mechanism shows a Poincare section with fractal dimension 1 <D <2. The present period of apparent recovery shows a relaxation with non-extensive statistical properties.
Accurately estimating the effectiveness of stay-at-home orders (SHOs) on reducing social contact and disease spread is crucial for mitigating pandemics. Leveraging individual-level location data for 10 million smartphones, we observe that by April 30th---when nine in ten Americans were under a SHO---daily movement had fallen 70% from pre-COVID levels. One-quarter of this decline is causally attributable to SHOs, with wide demographic differences in compliance, most notably by political affiliation. Likely Trump voters reduce movement by 9% following a local SHO, compared to a 21% reduction amo…
