We introduce methods and theory for fractionally cointegrated curve time series. We develop a variance-ratio test to determine the dimensions associated with the nonstationary and stationary subspaces. For each subspace, we apply a local Whittle estimator to estimate the long-memory parameter and establish its consistency. A Monte Carlo study of finite-sample performance is included, along with two empirical applications.
In this paper, we consider a continuous-time autoregressive fractionally integrated moving average (CARFIMA) model, which is defined as the stationary solution of a stochastic differential equation driven by a standard fractional Brownian motion. Like the discrete-time ARFIMA model, the CARFIMA model is useful for studying time series with short memory, long memory and antipersistence. We investigate the stationarity of the model and derive its covariance structure. In addition, we derive the spectral density function of a stationary CARFIMA process.
Fractionally integrated autoregressive moving average (FIARMA) processes have been widely and successfully used to model and predict univariate time series exhibiting long range dependence. Vector and functional extensions of these processes have also been considered more recently. Here we study these processes by relying on a spectral domain approach in the case where the processes are valued in a separable Hilbert space H0. In this framework, the usual univariate long memory parameter d is replaced by a long memory operator D acting on H0, leading to a class of H0-valued FIARMA(D, p, q) proc…
In practice, several time series exhibit long-range dependence or persistence in their observations, leading to the development of a number of estimation and prediction methodologies to account for the slowly decaying autocorrelations. The autoregressive fractionally integrated moving average (ARFIMA) process is one of the best-known classes of long-memory models. In the package afmtools for R, we have implemented some of these statistical tools for analyzing ARFIMA models. In particular, this package contains functions for parameter estimation, exact autocovariance calculation, predictive abi…
In this paper we propose the Single-equation Penalized Error Correction Selector (SPECS) as an automated estimation procedure for dynamic single-equation models with a large number of potentially (co)integrated variables. By extending the classical single-equation error correction model, SPECS enables the researcher to model large cointegrated datasets without necessitating any form of pre-testing for the order of integration or cointegrating rank. Under an asymptotic regime in which both the number of parameters and time series observations jointly diverge to infinity, we show that SPECS is a…
Fractionally integrated generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (FIGARCH) arises in modeling of financial time series. FIGARCH is essentially governed by a system of nonlinear stochastic difference equations ${u_t}$ = ${z_t}$ $(1-\sum\limits_{j=1}^q β_j L^j)σ_{t}^2 = ω+(1-\sum\limits_{j=1}^q β_j L^j - (\sum\limits_{k=1}^p φ_k L^k) (1-L)^d) u_t^2$, where $ω\in$ R, and $β_j\in$ R are constant parameters, $\{u_t\}_{{t\in}^+}$ and $\{σ_t\}_{{t\in}^+}$ are the discrete time real valued stochastic processes which represent FIGARCH (p,d,q) and stochastic volatility, respectively. Mo…
We construct fractionally integrated continuous-time GARCH models, which capture the observed long range dependence of squared volatility in high-frequency data. Since the usual Molchan-Golosov and Mandelbrot-van-Ness fractional kernels lead to problems in the definition of the model, we resort to moderately long memory processes by choosing a fractional parameter $d\in(-0.5,0)$ and remove the singularities of the kernel to obtain non-pathological sample paths. The volatility of the new fractional COGARCH process has positive features like stationarity, and its covariance function shows an alg…
We obtain invariance principles for a wide class of fractionally integrated nonlinear processes. The limiting distributions are shown to be fractional Brownian motions. Under very mild conditions, we extend earlier ones on long memory linear processes to a more general setting. The invariance principles are applied to the popular R/S and KPSS tests.
In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic properties of Le Cam's one-step estimator for weak Fractionally AutoRegressive Integrated Moving-Average (FARIMA) models. For these models, noises are uncorrelated but neither necessarily independent nor martingale differences errors. We show under some regularity assumptions that the one-step estimator is strongly consistent and asymptotically normal with the same asymptotic variance as the least squares estimator. We show through simulations that the proposed estimator reduces computational time compared with the least squares estimator. An applic…
A moment bound for the normalized conditional-sum-of-squares (CSS) estimate of a general autoregressive fractionally integrated moving average (ARFIMA) model with an arbitrary unknown memory parameter is derived in this paper. To achieve this goal, a uniform moment bound for the inverse of the normalized objective function is established. An important application of these results is to establish asymptotic expressions for the one-step and multi-step mean squared prediction errors (MSPE) of the CSS predictor. These asymptotic expressions not only explicitly demonstrate how the multi-step MSPE o…
We provide a comprehensive set of new results on the impact of mis-specifying the short run dynamics in fractionally integrated processes. We show that four alternative parametric estimators - frequency domain maximum likelihood, Whittle, time domain maximum likelihood and conditional sum of squares - converge to the same pseudo-true value under common mis-specification, and that they possess a common asymptotic distribution. The results are derived assuming a completely general parametric specification for the short run dynamics of the estimated (mis-specified) fractional model, and with long…
The Hurst exponent is the simplest numerical summary of self-similar long-range dependent stochastic processes. We consider the estimation of Hurst exponent in long-range dependent curve time series. Our estimation method begins by constructing an estimate of the long-run covariance function, which we use, via dynamic functional principal component analysis, in estimating the orthonormal functions spanning the dominant sub-space of functional time series. Within the context of functional autoregressive fractionally integrated moving average models, we compare finite-sample bias, variance and m…
It is generally accepted that many time series of practical interest exhibit strong dependence, i.e., long memory. For such series, the sample autocorrelations decay slowly and log-log periodogram plots indicate a straight-line relationship. This necessitates a class of models for describing such behavior. A popular class of such models is the autoregressive fractionally integrated moving average (ARFIMA) which is a linear process. However, there is also a need for nonlinear long memory models. For example, series of returns on financial assets typically tend to show zero correlation, whereas …
The study investigates the effects of crude oil prices on inflation and interest rate in Ghana using data obtained from Bank of Ghana data repository. The Augmented Dickey-Fuller and the Phillips-Perron tests were used to test the presence or otherwise of unit root relationship among the variables. The stationarity test showed that the variables are either integrated of order one or integrated of order zero. Autoregressive distributed lag bounds test approach was adopted to examine cointegration among the variables. The results showed a positive relationship between crude oil prices and inflat…
Time-series data with regular and/or seasonal long-memory are often aggregated before analysis. Often, the aggregation scale is large enough to remove any short-memory components of the underlying process but too short to eliminate seasonal patterns of much longer periods. In this paper, we investigate the limiting correlation structure of aggregate time series within an intermediate asymptotic framework that attempts to capture the aforementioned sampling scheme. In particular, we study the autocorrelation structure and the spectral density function of aggregates from a discrete-time process.…
We develop methodology allowing to simulate a stationary functional time series defined by means of its spectral density operators. Our framework is general, in that it encompasses any such stationary functional time series, whether linear or not. The methodology manifests particularly significant computational gains if the spectral density operators are specified by means of their eigendecomposition or as a filtering of white noise. In the special case of linear processes, we determine the analytical expressions for the spectral density operators of functional autoregressive (fractionally int…
Empirical likelihood method has been applied to short-memory time series models by Monti (1997) through the Whittle's estimation method. Yau (2012) extended this idea to long-memory time series models. Asymptotic distributions of the empirical likelihood ratio statistic for short and long-memory time series have been derived to construct confidence regions for the corresponding model parameters. However, computing profile empirical likelihood function involving constrained maximization does not always have a solution which leads to several drawbacks. In this paper, we propose an adjusted empir…

Statistical analyses and descriptive characterizations are sometimes assumed to be offering information on time series forecastability. Despite the scientific interest suggested by such assumptions, the relationships between descriptive time series features (e.g., temporal dependence, entropy, seasonality, trend and linearity features) and actual time series forecastability (quantified by issuing and assessing forecasts for the past) are scarcely studied and quantified in the literature. In this work, we aim to fill in this gap by investigating such relationships, and the way that they can be …
For long memory time series models with uncorrelated but dependent errors, we establish the asymptotic normality of the Whittle estimator under mild conditions. Our framework includes the widely used FARIMA models with GARCH-type innovations. To cover nonstationary fractionally integrated processes, we extend the idea of Abadir, Distaso and Giraitis (2007, Journal of Econometrics 141, 1353-1384) and develop the nonstationarity-extended Whittle estimation. The resulting estimator is shown to be asymptotically normal and is more efficient than the tapered Whittle estimator. Finally, the results …
Information storage, reflecting the capability of a dynamical system to keep predictable information during its evolution over time, is a key element of intrinsic distributed computation, useful for the description of the dynamical complexity of several physical and biological processes. Here we introduce a parametric framework which allows to compute information storage across multiple time scales in stochastic processes displaying both short-term dynamics and long-range correlations (LRC). The framework exploits the theory of state space models to provide the multiscale representation of lin…

Delivering useful hydrological forecasts is critical for urban and agricultural water management, hydropower generation, flood protection and management, drought mitigation and alleviation, and river basin planning and management, among others. In this work, we present and appraise a new simple and flexible methodology for hydrological time series forecasting. This methodology relies on (a) at least two individual forecasting methods and (b) the median combiner of forecasts. The appraisal is made by using a big dataset consisted of 90-year-long mean annual river flow time series from approxima…
