Scattering resonances due to the dipole-dipole interaction between ultracold molecules, induced by static or microwave fields, are studied theoretically. We develop a method for coupled-channel calculations that can efficiently impose many short-range boundary conditions, defined by a short-range phase shift and loss probability as in quantum-defect theory. We study how resonances appear as the short-range loss probability is lowered below the universal unit probability. This may become realizable for nonreactive ultracold molecules in blue-detuned box potentials.
We report on the observation of dipolar splitting in 6Li p-wave Feshbach resonances by highresolution atom-loss spectroscopy. The Feshbach resonances at 159 G and 215 G exhibit a doublet structure of 10 mG and 13 mG, respectively, associated with different projections of the orbital angular momentum. The observed splittings agree very well with coupled-channel calculations. We map out the temperature dependence of the atom-loss spectrum allowing us to extrapolate resonance positions and the corresponding widths to zero temperature. The observed dipolar splitting in fermionic lithium might be u…
We report on the observation of heteronuclear magnetic Feshbach resonances in several isotope mixtures of the highly magnetic elements erbium and dysprosium. Among many narrow features, we identify two resonances with a width greater than one Gauss. We characterize one of these resonances, in a mixture of $^{168}$Er and $^{164}$Dy, in terms of loss rates and elastic cross section, and observe a temperature dependence of the on-resonance loss rate suggestive of a universal scaling associated with broad resonances. Our observations hold promise for the use of such a resonance for tuning the inte…
We report on the creation of a degenerate dipolar Fermi gas of erbium atoms. We force evaporative cooling in a fully spin-polarized sample down to temperatures as low as 0.2 times the Fermi temperature. The strong magnetic dipole-dipole interaction enables elastic collisions between identical fermions even in the zero-energy limit. The measured elastic scattering cross section agrees well with the predictions from dipolar scattering theory, which follow a universal scaling law depending only on the dipole moment and on the atomic mass. Our approach to quantum degeneracy proceeds with very high…
We used the Gross--Pitaevskii equations to investigate ferromagnetic resonance in spin-1 Bose--Einstein condensates with a magnetic dipole-dipole interaction. By introducing the dipole interaction, we obtained equations similar to the Kittel equations used to represent ferromagnetic resonance in condensed matter physics. These equations indicated that the ferromagnetic resonance originated from dipolar interaction, and that the resonance frequency depended upon the shape of the condensate. Furthermore, spin currents driven by spin diffusions are characteristic of this system.
We produce Bose-Einstein condensates of $^{162}$Dy atoms employing an innovative technique based on a resonator-enhanced optical trap that allows efficient loading from the magneto-optical trap and fast evaporation. We characterize the scattering properties of the ultracold atoms for magnetic fields between 6 and 30 G. In addition to the typical chaotic distribution of narrow Feshbach resonances in Lanthanides, we discover two rather isolated broad features at around 22 G and 27 G. A characterization using the complementary measurements of losses, thermalization, anisotropic expansion and mole…
We observe the suppression of inelastic dipolar scattering in ultracold Fermi gases of the highly magnetic atom dysprosium: the more energy that is released, the less frequently these exothermic reactions take place, and only quantum spin statistics can explain this counterintuitive effect. Inelastic dipolar scattering in non-zero magnetic fields leads to heating or to loss of the trapped population, both detrimental to experiments intended to study quantum many-body physics with strongly dipolar gases. Fermi statistics, however, is predicted to lead to a kinematic suppression of these harmful…
With current magnetic field shielding and high precision detection in dipolar spinor Bose-Einstein condensates, it is possible to experimentally detect the low or zero field nonsecular dipolar dynamics. Here we analytically investigate the zero-field nonsecular magnetic dipolar interaction effect, with an emphasis on magnetization dynamics in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate under the single spatial mode approximation within the mean field theory. Due to the biaxial nature of the dipolar interaction, a novel resonance occurs in the condensate magnetization oscillation, contrast to the previou…
We discuss the properties of the effective dipolar interaction for two particles tightly confined along a one-dimensional tube, stressing the emergence of a single dipolar-induced resonance in a regime for which two classical dipoles would just repel each other. We present a toy-model potential reproducing the main features of the effective interaction: a non-zero-range repulsive potential competing with an attractive contact term. The existence of a single resonance is confirmed analytically. The toy model is than generalized to investigate the interplay between dipolar and contact interactio…
We develop a non-perturbative theoretical framework to treat collisions with generic anisotropic interactions in quasi-one-dimensional geometries. Our method avoids the limitations of pseudopotential theory allowing to include accurately long-range anisotropic interactions. Analyzing ultracold dipolar collisions in a harmonic waveguide we predict dipolar confinement-induced resonances (DCIRs) which are attributed to different angular momentum states. The analytically derived resonance condition reveals in detail the interplay of the confinement with the anisotropic nature of the dipole-dipole …
We develop a theoretical framework for the quasi-low-dimensional confinement-induced resonances (CIRs) of particles with the arbitrary three-dimensional two-body interactions, based on the Huang-Yang pseudopotential and the treatment of Feshbach resonances. Using this new approach, we analytically obtain some universal properties of dipolar CIRs in quasi-one-dimensional (1D) waveguides. We also show that the dipolar CIRs can be induced by tuning the angle between the dipole moments and the waveguide, which is experimentally observable in quasi-1D Cr and Dy atomic gases. We expect that these ti…
We report the measurement of collisions between two Bose-Einstein condensates with strong dipolar interactions. The collision velocity is significantly larger than the internal velocity distribution widths of the individual condensates, and thus, with the condensates being sufficiently dilute, a halo corresponding to the two-body differential scattering cross section is observed. The results demonstrate a novel regime of quantum scattering, relevant to dipolar interactions, in which a large number of angular momentum states become coupled during the collision. We perform Monte-Carlo simulation…
We study the role of the Dipolar-Induced Resonance (DIR) in a quasi-one-dimensional system of ultracold bosons. We first describe the effect of the DIR on two particles in a harmonic trap. Then, we consider a deep optical lattice loaded with ultracold dipolar bosons. In order to describe this system, we introduce a novel atom-dimer extended Bose-Hubbard model, which is the minimal model correctly accounting for the DIR. We analyze the impact of the DIR on the phase diagram at T=0 by exact diagonalization of a small-sized system. We show that the DIR strongly affects this phase diagram. In part…
It is known from the solution of the two-body problem that an anisotropic dipolar interaction can give rise to s-wave scattering resonances, which are named as dipolar interaction induced resonaces (DIIR). In this letter, we study zero-temperature many-body physics of a two-component Fermi gas across a DIIR. In the low-density regime, it is very striking that the resulting pairing order parameter is a nearly isotropic singlet pairing and the physics can be well described by an s-wave resonant interaction potential with finite range corrections, despite of the anisotropic nature of dipolar inte…
A previously developed approach for the numerical treatment of two particles that are confined in a finite optical-lattice potential and interact via an arbitrary isotropic interaction potential has been extended to incorporate an additional anisotropic dipole-dipole interaction. The interplay of a model but realistic short-range Born-Oppenheimer potential and the dipole-dipole interaction for two confined particles is investigated. A variation of the strength of the dipole-dipole interaction leads to diverse resonance phenomena. In a harmonic confinement potential some resonances show similar…
We show that s-wave scattering resonances induced by dipolar interactions in a polar molecular gas have a universal large and positive effective range, which is very different from Feshbach resonances realized in cold atoms before, where the effective range is either negligible or negative. Such a difference has important consequence in many-body physics. At high temperature regime, a positive effective range gives rise to stronger repulsive interaction energy for positive scattering length, and weaker attractive interaction energy for negative scattering length. While at low-temperatures, we …
Dipolar relaxation happens when one or both colliding atoms flip their spins exothermically inside a magnetic ($B$) field. This work reports precise measurements of dipolar relaxation in a Bose-Einstein condensate of ground state $^{87}$Rb atoms together with in-depth theoretical investigations. Previous perturbative treatments fail to explain our observations except at very small $B$-fields. By employing quantum defect theory based on analytic solutions of asymptotic van der Waals interaction $-C_6/R^6$ ($R$ being interatomic spacing), we significantly expand the applicable range of perturbat…
In this letter we consider dipolar quantum gases in a quasi-one-dimensional tube with dipole moment perpendicular to the tube direction. We deduce the effective one-dimensional interaction potential and show that this potential is not purely repulsive, but rather has an attractive part due to high-order scattering processes through transverse excited states. The attractive part can induce bound state and cause scattering resonances. This represents the dipole induced resonance in low-dimension. We work out an unconventional behavior of low-energy phase shift for this effective potential and sh…
We study dipolar relaxation of a chromium BEC loaded into a 3D optical lattice. We observe dipolar relaxation resonances when the magnetic energy released during the inelastic collision matches an excitation towards higher energy bands. A spectroscopy of these resonances for two orientations of the magnetic field provides a 3D band spectroscopy of the lattice. The narrowest resonance is registered for the lowest excitation energy. Its line-shape is sensitive to the on-site interaction energy. We use such sensitivity to probe number squeezing in a Mott insulator, and we reveal the production of…
Interaction of dipolar polaritons can be efficiently tuned by means of a shape resonance in their excitonic component. Provided the resonance width is large, a squeezed population of strongly interacting polaritons may persist on the repulsive side of the resonance. We derive an analytical expression for the polariton coupling constant and show that it may have very large values in typical experimental conditions. Our arguments provide a new direction for the quest of interactions in quantum photonics.
We study a spinor condensate of alkali atoms in F = 1 hyperfine state under the presence of an oscillating magnetic field. We find resonances which, due to the dipolar interactions, magnify the transfer of atoms from mF = 1 to mF = 0 Zeeman sublevel. These resonances occur at magnetic fields of the order of milligaus and are broad enough to enable observation of the famous Einstein-de Haas effect, which is solely a dipolar effect, in systems of cold alkali gases.
The energy of ultra-dilute quantum many-body systems is known to exhibit a universal dependence on the gas parameter $x=n a_0^d$, with $n$ the density, $d$ the dimensionality of the space ($d=1,2,3$) and $a_0$ the $s$-wave scattering length. The universal regime typically extends up to $x\approx 0.001$, while at larger values specific details of the interaction start to be relevant and different model potentials lead to different results. Dipolar systems are peculiar in this regard since the anisotropy of the interaction makes $a_0$ depend on the polarization angle $α$, so different combinatio…
We establish that two-dimensional dipolar quantum gases admit a universal description, i.e., their thermodynamic properties are independent of details of the interaction at short distances. The only relevant parameters are the dipole length as well as the scattering length of the combined short-range plus dipolar interaction potential. We derive adiabatic relations that link the change in the thermodynamic potentials with respect to the scattering length and the dipole length to a generalized Tan contact parameter and a new dipolar contact, which involves an integral of a short-distance regula…
We study a spinor condensate of Rb-87 atoms in F = 1 hyperfine state confined in an optical dipole trap. Putting initially all atoms in mF = 1 component we observe a significant transfer of atoms to other, initially empty Zeeman states exclusively due to dipolar forces. Because of conservation of a total angular momentum the atoms going to other Zeeman components acquire an orbital angular momentum and circulate around the center of the trap. This is a realization of Einstein-de Haas effect in a system of cold gases. We show that the transfer of atoms via dipolar interaction is possible only w…
We calculate the energy and wave functions of two particles confined to two spatial dimensions interacting via arbitrary anisotropic potentials with negative or zero net volume. The general rigorous analytic expressions are given in the weak coupling limit where universality or model independence are approached. The monopole part of anisotropic potentials is crucial in the universal limit. We illustrate the universality with a system of two arbitrarily polarized cold dipolar molecules in a bilayer. We discuss the transition to universality as function of polarization and binding energy, and co…

A uniform dilute Bose gas of known density has a universal behavior as the atomic scattering length tends to infinity at unitarity while most of its properties are determined by a universal parameter $ξ$ relating the energies of the noninteracting and unitary gases. The usual mean-field equation is not valid in this limit and beyond mean-field corrections become important. We use a dynamical model including such corrections to investigate a trapped disk-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and a dipolar BEC vortex for large scattering length. We study the sensitivity of our results on…
By using two-fluid model the effect of impurities on the transition temperature of a dipolar trapped Bose gas is investigated. By treating Gaussian spatial correlation for impurities from the interaction modified spectra of the system, the formula for the shift of transition temperature is derived. The shift of the transition temperature contains essentially three contributions due to contact, dipole-dipole and impurity interactions. Applying our results to Dipolar Bose gases show that the shift of the transition temperature due to impurities could be measured for isotropic trap (dipole-dipole…
In a combined experimental and theoretical effort, we demonstrate a novel type of dipolar system made of ultracold bosonic dipolar molecules with large magnetic dipole moments. Our dipolar molecules are formed in weakly bound Feshbach molecular states from a sample of strongly magnetic bosonic erbium atoms. We show that the ultracold magnetic molecules can carry very large dipole moments and we demonstrate how to create and characterize them, and how to change their orientation. Finally, we confirm that the relaxation rates of molecules in a quasi-two dimensional geometry can be reduced by usi…
In this paper, we provide the two-body exact solutions of two dimensional (2D) Schrödinger equation with isotropic $\pm 1/r^3$ interactions. Analytic quantum defect theory are constructed base on these solutions and are applied to investigate the scattering properties as well as two-body bound states of ultracold polar molecules confined in a quasi-2D geometry. Interestingly, we find that for the attractive case, the scattering resonance happens simultaneously in all partial waves which has not been observed in other systems. The effect of this feature on the scattering phase shift across such…
We investigate magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances between ultracold europium atoms and between europium and alkali-metal atoms using multichannel quantum scattering calculations. For ultracold gases of europium atoms both homonuclear $^{153}$Eu+$^{153}$Eu and heteronuclear $^{151}$Eu+$^{153}$Eu systems are studied. Calculations for mixtures of europium and alkali-metal atoms are carried out for prototype systems of $^{153}$Eu+$^{87}$Rb and $^{153}$Eu+$^7$Li. We analyze the prospects for the control of scattering properties, observation of quantum chaotic behavior, and magnetoassociation …
We report parametric resonances (PRs) in the mean-field dynamics of a one-dimensional dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (DBEC) in widely varying trapping geometries. The chief goal is to characterize the energy levels of this system by analytical methods and the significance of this study arises from the commonly known fact that in the presence of interactions the energy levels of a trapped BEC are hard to calculate analytically. The latter characterization is achieved by a matching of the PR energies to energy levels of the confining trap using perturbative methods. Further, this work reveals …
We consider two-color heteronuclear photoassociation of atoms into dipolar molecules in the J=1 electro-vibrational ground state, where a free-ground laser couples atoms directly to the ground state and a free-bound laser couples the atoms to an electronically-excited state. This problem raises an interest because heteronuclear photoassociation from atoms to near-ground state molecules is limited by the small size of the target state. Nevertheless, the addition of the excited state creates a second pathway for creating ground state molecules, leading to quantum interference between direct phot…
We analyze the nature of quantum phase transition to a superfluid state of flexible chains in a gas of polar bosonic molecules confined in a stack of $N$ identical 1d ("cigar" type) optical lattice layers and polarized perpendicularly to the layers. Monte Carlo simulations within the $J$-current model show that, in the absence of the inter-tube tunneling, the transition to the $N$-layered superfluid is in the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless universality class in the one-particle density matrix channel. The inter-layer tunneling changes it to the $q=N$ 2d Potts universality. The low energy fiel…
We report on the observation of a large anisotropy in the rethermalization dynamics of an ultracold dipolar Fermi gas driven out of equilibrium. Our system consists of an ultracold sample of strongly magnetic $^{167}$Er fermions, spin-polarized in the lowest Zeeman sublevel. In this system, elastic collisions arise purely from universal dipolar scattering. Based on cross-dimensional rethermalization experiments, we observe a strong anisotropy of the scattering, which manifests itself in a large angular dependence of the thermal relaxation dynamics. Our result is in very good agreement with rec…
We consider quantum phase transitions in a system of bright dipolar excitons which can form bound pairs (dipolar biexcitons). We assume a narrow resonance in the interaction of excitons with opposite spins. At sufficiently large density a resonant exciton superfluid transforms into a superfluid of biexcitons. The transition may be either of the first or the second kind. The average relative momenta of excitons in the pairs being beyond the light cone, the transition should be accompanied by reduction of the photoluminescence intensity. Effective magnetic fields due to the long-range exchange s…
We numerically study the many-body physics of molecular Bose-Einstein condensates with strong dipole-dipole interactions. We observe the formation of self-bound droplets, and explore phase diagrams that feature a variety of exotic supersolid states. In all of these cases, the large and tunable molecular dipole moments enable the study of unexplored regimes and phenomena, including liquid-like density saturation and universal stability scaling laws for droplets, as well as pattern formation and the limits of droplet supersolidity. We discuss a realistic experimental approach to realize both the…
Microscopic control over polar molecules with tunable interactions would enable realization of novel quantum phenomena. Using an applied electric field gradient, we demonstrate layer-resolved state preparation and imaging of ultracold potassium-rubidium molecules confined to two-dimensional planes in an optical lattice. The coherence time of rotational superpositions in individual layers is maximized by rotating the electric field relative to the optical trap polarization to achieve state-insensitive trapping. Molecules in adjacent layers interact via dipolar exchange of rotational angular mom…
The impact of the short-range interaction on the resonances occurrence in the anisotropic dipolar scattering in a plane was numerically investigated for the arbitrarily oriented dipoles and for a wide range of collision energies. We revealed the strong dependence of the cross section of the 2D dipolar scattering on the radius of short-range interaction, which is modeled by a hard wall potential and by the more realistic Lennard-Jones potential, and on the mutual orientations of the dipoles. We defined the critical (magic) tilt angle of one of the dipoles, depending on the direction of the seco…
The dynamics of a two-soliton molecule bouncing on the reflecting atomic mirror under the effect of gravity has been studied by analytical and numerical methods. The analytical description is based on the variational approximation. In numerical simulations, we observe the resonance oscillations of the two-soliton's center-of-mass position and width, induced by modulated atomic mirror. Theoretical predictions are verified by numerical simulations of the nonlocal Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) and qualitative agreement between them is found. Hamiltonian dynamic system for a dipolar Bose-Einstei…
We investigate the ground state properties and tunneling dynamics of ultracold dipolar bosons in a one dimensional triple well trap from a few-body ab-initio perspective. Our focus is primarily on the distinctive features of dipolar bosons compared to the contact interacting bosons. Formation of intra-well localization is observed for very strong dipolar interaction. General population rearangement as well as fragmentation and localization effects have been found, depending strongly on the particle number. The energy spectrum for two particles exhibits avoided crossings that lead to several di…
Ultracold polar molecules possess long-range, anisotropic, and tunable dipolar interactions, providing the opportunities to probe quantum phenomena inaccessible with existing cold gas platforms. However, experimental progress has been hindered by the dominance of two-body loss over elastic interactions, which prevents efficient evaporative cooling. Though recent work has demonstrated controlled interactions by confining molecules to a two-dimensional geometry, a general approach for tuning molecular interactions in a three-dimensional (3D), stable system has been lacking. Here, we demonstrate …
We investigate the nonlocal Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation with long-range dipole-dipole and contact interactions (including binary and three-body collisions). We address the impact of the three-body interaction on stabilizing trapless dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). It is found that the dipolar BECs exhibit stability not only for the usual combination of attractive binary and repulsive three-body interactions, but also for the case when these terms have opposite signs. The trapless stability of the dipolar BECs may be further enhanced by time-periodic modulation of the three-body in…
We study the dynamics of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate, like for example a $^{52}$Cr or $^{164}$Dy condensate, interacting with a superconducting surface. The magnetic dipole moments of the atoms in the Bose-Einstein condensate induce eddy currents in the superconductor. The magnetic field generated by eddy currents modifies the trapping potential such that the center-of-mass oscillation frequency is shifted. We numerically solve the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for this system and compare the results with analytical approximations. We present an approximation that gives excellent agreement …
We realize a two-component dipolar Fermi gas with tunable interactions, using erbium atoms. Employing a lattice-protection technique, we selectively prepare deeply degenerate mixtures of the two lowest spin states and perform high-resolution Feshbach spectroscopy in an optical dipole trap. We identify a comparatively broad Feshbach resonance and map the interspin scattering length in its vicinity. The Fermi mixture shows a remarkable collisional stability in the strongly interacting regime, providing a first step towards studies of superfluid pairing, crossing from Cooper pairs to bound molecu…
Emergence of algebraic quasi-long-range order is a key feature of superfluid phase transitions at two dimensions. For this reduced dimensionality interactions prevent Bose-Einstein condensation with true long range order, at any finite temperature. Here, we report the occurence of algebraic order in a strongly interacting quantum liquid formed by dipolar excitons confined in a bilayer semiconductor heterostructure. We observe a transition from exponential to algebraic decay of the excitons temporal coherence, accompanied by a universal scaling behaviour of the equation of state. Our results pr…
Ultracold ground state dipolar 40K-87Rb molecules have recently been produced in a loose harmonic trap by employing a magnetic field sweep across a Feshbach resonance followed by stimulated Raman adiabatic passage [K.-K. Ni et al., Science 322, 231 (2008)]. The overall experimental efficiency for molecule formation was around 20%. We show that the efficiency can be increased to nearly 100% if one first loads the atomic gases into an optical lattice of the appropriate depth and tunes the interspecies attraction to have exactly one atom of each species at an occupied lattice site. Our proposed s…
We consider a weakly interacting two-component Fermi gas of dipolar particles (magnetic atoms or polar molecules) in the two-dimensional geometry. The dipole-dipole interaction (together with the short-range interaction at Feshbach resonances) for dipoles perpendicular to the plane of translational motion may provide a superfluid transition. The dipole-dipole scattering amplitude is momentum dependent, which violates the Anderson theorem claiming the independence of the transition temperature on the presence of weak disorder. We have shown that the disorder can strongly increase the critical t…
The superfluid phases in the resonant dipolar Fermi gases are investigated by the standard mean-field theory. In contrast to the crossover from Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) to Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid in the Fermi gases with the isotropic interactions, the resonant dipolar interaction leads to two completely different BEC phases of the tight-binding Fermi molecules on both sides of the resonance, which are characterized by two order parameters with the distinct internal symmetries. We point that near the resonance, the two competitive phases can coexist, and an emergent r…
The low-density expansions for the energy, chemical potential, and condensate depletion of the homogeneous dilute dipolar Bose gas are obtained by regularizing the dipole-dipole interaction at long distances. It is shown that the leading term, proportional to the density, allows a simple physical interpretation and consistently describes the thermodynamic stability of the system. The long-range asymptotics are obtained analytically for the normal and anomalous one-particle correlation functions and the pair distribution function. We discuss the properties of the two-body scattering with zero r…
Dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates in an array of double-well potentials realize an effective transverse Ising model with peculiar inter-layer interactions, that may result under proper conditions in an anomalous first-order ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic phase transition, and nontrivial phases due to frustration. The considered setup as well allows the study of Kibble-Zurek defect formation, whose kink statistics follows that expected from the universality class of the mean-field transverse Ising model in 1D. Furthermore, random occupation of each layer of the stack leads to random effective …
