The zero-temperature and finite-temperature thermodynamics of two-component Fermi gases with finite-range attractive interaction suffer from fermion sign problem, which seems like an insurmountable problem in exact numerical simulations. In a recent work, we find a reliable method to simulate the thermodynamic properties of single-component Fermi gases for both noninteracting and repulsively interacting cases based on the method of parametrized partition function and the $ξ_E$ curve of constant energy. In the present work, this method is generalized to two-component Fermi gases with finite-range attractive interaction, which shows clearly that our method has good chance to apply to various Fermi systems. From the simulated heat capacity, we find a peak at the temperature below the Fermi temperature which implies the pairing of fermions with different spin. At high temperature, the simulated heat capacity approaches the classical value. The reasonable result in this work validates the application of our method to attractive cases, which implies a wide range of applications, from nuclear physics, BCS-BEC crossover, superconductivity, to neutron star, etc..
A significant feature of the one-dimensional super Tonks-Girardeau gas is its metastable gas-like state with a stronger Fermi-like pressure than for free fermions which prevents a collapse of atoms. This naturally suggests a way to search for such strongly correlated behaviour in systems of interacting fermions in one dimension. We thus show that the strongly attractive Fermi gas without polarization can be effectively described by a super Tonks-Girardeau gas composed of bosonic Fermi pairs with attractive pair-pair interaction. A natural description of such super Tonks-Girardeau gases is prov…
We consider two-dimensional imperfect attractive Fermi and repulsive Bose gases consisting of spinless point particles whose total interparticle interaction energy is represented by $a N^2/2 V$ with $a=-a_{F}\leq 0$ for fermions, and $a=a_{B}\geq 0$ for bosons. We show that in spite of the attraction the thermodynamics of $d=2$ imperfect Fermi gas remains well defined for $0 \leq a_{F}\leq a_{0}=h^2/2πm$, and is exactly the same as the one of the repulsive imperfect Bose gas with $a_{B}=a_{0}-a_{F}$. In particular, for $a_{F}=a_{0}$ one observes the thermodynamic equivalence of the attractive …
We analyze the dynamics of one-dimensional quantum gases with strongly attractive contact interactions. We specify a class of initial states for which attractive forces effectively act as strongly repulsive ones during the time evolution. Our findings extend the theoretical results on the super-Tonks-Girardeau gas to a highly nonequilibrium dynamics. The novel mechanism is illustrated on the prototypical problem of the domain stability in a two-component Fermi gas. We also discuss nonlocal interactions and analyze universality of the presented results. Moreover, we use our conclusions to argue…
In the strong interaction limit, attractive fermions with $N$-component hyperfine states in a one-dimensional waveguide form unbreakable bound cluster states. We demonstrate that the ground state of strongly attractive SU($N$) Fermi gases can be effectively described by a super Tonks-Girardeau gas-like state composed of bosonic cluster states with strongly attractive cluster-cluster interaction for even $N$, and a Fermi duality of a super Tonks-Girardeau gas-like state composed of fermionic cluster states with weakly interacting cluster-cluster p-wave interaction for odd $N$.
We study the attractive Fermi mixture of a ${}^{6}\mathrm{Li}$-${}^{40}\mathrm{K}$ gas in one dimension using the continuous matrix product states variational ansatz and obtain the $T=0$ phase diagram. We predict an axial density profile that contains four distinct phases trapped induced along one-dimensional (1D) tubes, which is more intricate than those observed in 1D mass-balanced systems or in higher-dimensional gas clouds. The parameter regimes explored are realistic in view of possible future experiments. This an application of continuous matrix product states to a nonintegrable fermioni…
We consider a quasi-one-dimensional model of a two-component Fermi gas at zero temperature on one, two and three-leg attractive-U Hubbard ladders. We construct the grand canonical phase diagram of a two-component spin-polarized gas. We find that the structure of the phase diagram of the attractive-U Hubbard model for two and three leg ladders significantly differs q from the structure of the phase diagram of a single chain. We argue that the single chain model is a special case, and that multichain ladders display qualitative features of the 1D-to-3D crossover, observed in experiments with tra…
We study the attractive and repulsive two-component Fermi gas with spin imbalance in two dimensions. Using a generalized $T$-matrix approximation, we examine the thermodynamic properties of both attractive and repulsive contact interacting Fermi gases. The interaction strength, which is characterized by the bound state energy $E_b=\hbar^2/m a_{2d}^2$ in vacuum, can be adjusted through a Feshbach resonance. We calculate the interaction energy, compressibility and spin susceptibility of the two branches of the Fermi gas. For the repulsive branch, we also find a critical strength of interaction $…
We investigate thermodynamics and quantum criticality of strongly attractive Fermi gases confined in a one-dimensional (1D) harmonic trap. Finite temperature density profiles, entropy, compressibility and susceptibility of the trapped gas are studied using analytic results for the thermodynamics within the local density approximation. We demonstrate that current experiments are capable of measuring universal Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid physics and quantum criticality of 1D strongly interacting Fermi gases. The results provide insights on recent measurements of key features of the phase diagram o…
We study a two-dimensional two-component Fermi gas with attractive or repulsive short-range interactions at zero temperature. We use Diffusion Monte Carlo with Fixed Node approximation in order to calculate the energy per particle and the opposite-spin pair distribution functions. We show the relevance of beyond mean field effects and verify the consistency of our approach by using Tan's Contact relations.
We show that the spreading of the center-of-mass density of ultracold attractively interacting bosons can become superballistic in the presence of decoherence, via single-, two- and/or three-body losses. In the limit of weak decoherence, we analytically solve the numerical model introduced in [Phys. Rev. A 91, 063616 (2015)]. The analytical predictions allow us to identify experimentally accessible parameter regimes for which we predict superballistic spreading of the center-of-mass density. Ultracold attractive Bose gases form weakly bound molecules; quantum matter-wave bright solitons. Our c…
Motivated by the recent experimental realization of synthetic gauge fields in ultracold atoms, we investigate one-dimensional attractive Fermi gases with a time-dependent gauge flux on the spin sector. By combining the methods of the Bethe ansatz with complex twists and Landau-Dykhne, it is shown that a spin-depairing transition occurs, which may represent a nonequilibrium transition from fermionic superfluids to normal states with spin currents caused by a many-body quantum tunneling. For the case of the Hubbard ring at half filling, our finding forms a dual concept with the dielectric breakd…
We consider two-component one-dimensional quantum gases at special imbalanced commensurabilities which lead to the formation of multimer (multi-particle bound-states) as the dominant order parameter. Luttinger liquid theory supports a mode-locking mechanism in which mass (or velocity) asymmetry is identified as the key ingredient to stabilize such states. While the scenario is valid both in the continuum and on a lattice, the effects of umklapp terms relevant for densities commensurate with the lattice spacing are also mentioned. These ideas are illustrated and confronted with the physics of t…
We explore the ground states in population-imbalanced attractive 1-D fermionic optical lattice filling $p$ orbitals over the lowest $s$ one by using the density-matrix-renormalization-group (DMRG) method. The DMRG calculations find the occurrence of spatially non-uniform off-diagonal long-range order. In contrast to Fulde-Ferrel Larkin-Ovchinikov pair as observed in the single-band Hubbard model. The spatial oscillation period of the pair correlation function is widely fixed to be $π$ irrespective of the mismatch between spin-split Fermi surfaces. The ground-state $π$ order corresponds to $η$-…
We present a rigorous study of momentum distribution and p-wave contacts of one dimensional (1D) spinless Fermi gases with an attractive p-wave interaction. Using the Bethe wave function, we analytically calculate the large-momentum tail of momentum distribution of the model. We show that the leading ($\sim 1/p^{2}$) and sub-leading terms ($\sim 1/p^{4}$) of the large-momentum tail are determined by two contacts $C_2$ and $C_4$, which we show, by explicit calculation, are related to the short-distance behaviour of the two-body correlation function and its derivatives. We show as one increases …
Quantum criticality of strongly attractive Fermi gas with $SU(3)$ symmetry in one dimension is studied via the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) equations. The phase transitions driven by the chemical potential $μ$, effective magnetic field $H_1$, $H_2$ (chemical potential biases) are analyzed at the quantum criticality. The phase diagram and critical fields are analytically determined by the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations in zero temperature limit. High accurate equations of state, scaling functions are also obtained analytically for the strong interacting gases. The dynamic exponent $z=2…
We demonstrate that a kind of highly excited state of strongly attractive Hubbard model, named of Fermi super-Tonks-Girardeau state, can be realized in the spin-1/2 Fermi optical lattice system by a sudden switch of interaction from the strongly repulsive regime to the strongly attractive regime. In contrast to the ground state of the attractive Hubbard model, such a state is the lowest scattering state with no pairing between attractive fermions. With the aid of Bethe-ansatz method, we calculate energies of both the Fermi Tonks-Girardeau gas and the Fermi super-Tonks-Girardeau state of spin-1…
In this letter we present a unified derivation of the pressure equation of states, thermodynamics and scaling functions for the one-dimensional (1D) strongly attractive Fermi gases with $SU(w)$ symmetry. These physical quantities provide a rigorous understanding on a universality class of quantum criticality characterised by the critical exponents $z=2$ and correlation length exponent $ν=1/2$. Such a universality class of quantum criticality can occur when the Fermi sea of one branch of charge bound states starts to fill or become gapped at zero temperature. The quantum critical cone can be de…
We calculate the energy and the condensate fraction of a system of trapped bosons interacting via a short-range two-body potential with positive scattering length. The potential is attractive and has a two-body bound state. When the scattering length is small compared to the trap length the system is model independent: all potential models -- attractive, repulsive and zero-range -- provide similar results. When the scattering length is large the attractive model differs qualitatively from the repulsive and zero-range models. In this regime the system with attractive potential becomes independe…
We introduce coupled-cluster (CC) theory for the numerical study of the normal state of two-component, dilute Fermi gases with attractive, short-range interactions at zero temperature. We focus on CC theory with double excitations (CCD) and discuss its close relationship with -- and improvement upon -- the t-matrix approximation, i.e., the resummation of ladder diagrams via a random-phase approximation. We further discuss its relationship with Chevy's variational wavefunction ansatz for the Fermi polaron and argue that CCD is its natural extension to nonzero minority species concentrations. St…
We report observation of quasiparticle pair-production and characterize quantum entanglement created by a modulational instability in an atomic superfluid. By quenching the atomic interaction to attractive and then back to weakly repulsive, we produce correlated quasiparticles and monitor their evolution in a superfluid through evaluating the in situ density noise power spectrum, which essentially measures a 'homodyne' interference between ground state atoms and quasiparticles of opposite momenta. We observe large amplitude growth in the power spectrum and subsequent coherent oscillations in a…
We exploit a time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopic technique to study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of an ultracold two-component Fermi gas, selectively quenched to strong repulsion along the upper branch of a broad Feshbach resonance. For critical interactions, we find the rapid growth of short-range anti-correlations between repulsive fermions to initially overcome concurrent pairing processes. At longer evolution times, these two competing mechanisms appear to macroscopically coexist in a short-range correlated state of fermions and pairs, unforeseen thus far. Our work provides fundament…

Extensive research has been lavished on effects of spin-orbit couplings (SOC) in attractively interacting Fermi systems in both neutral cold atom systems and condensed matter systems. Recently, it was suggested that a SOC drives a new class of BCS to BEC crossover which is different than the conventional one without a SOC. Here, we explore what are the most relevant physical quantities to describe such a new BCS to BEC crossover and their experimental detections. We extend the concepts of the pairing length and "Cooper-pair size" in the absence of SOC to Fermi systems with SOC. We investigate …
A novel way to produce quantum Hall ribbons in a cold atomic system is to use M hyperfine states of atoms in a 1D optical lattice to mimic an additional "synthetic dimension". A notable aspect here is that the SU(M) symmetric interaction between atoms manifests as "infinite ranged" along the synthetic dimension. We study the many body physics of fermions with attractive interactions in this system. We use a combination of analytical field theoretic and numerical density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods to reveal the rich ground state phase diagram of the system, including novel phas…
The bulk viscosity determines dissipation during hydrodynamic expansion. It vanishes in scale invariant fluids, while a nonzero value quantifies the deviation from scale invariance. For the dilute Fermi gas the bulk viscosity is given exactly by the correlation function of the contact density of local pairs. As a consequence, scale invariance is broken purely by pair fluctuations. These fluctuations give rise also to logarithmic terms in the bulk viscosity of the high-temperature nondegenerate gas. For the quantum degenerate regime I report numerical Luttinger-Ward results for the contact corr…

We investigate perturbative thermodynamic geometry of nonextensive ideal Classical, Bose and Fermi gases. We show that the intrinsic statistical interaction of nonextensive Bose (Fermi) gas is attractive (repulsive) similar to the extensive case but the value of thermodynamic curvature is changed by nonextensive parameter. In contrary to the extensive ideal classical gas, the nonextensive one may be divided to two different regimes. According to deviation parameter of the system to the nonextensive case, one can find a special value of fugacity, $z^{*}$, where the sign of thermodynamic curvatur…
We consider a single spin-down impurity atom interacting via an attractive, short-range potential with a spin-up Fermi sea in two dimensions (2D). Similarly to 3D, we show how the impurity can form a metastable state (the "repulsive polaron") with energy greater than that of the non-interacting impurity. Moreover, we find that the repulsive polaron can acquire a finite momentum for sufficiently weak attractive interactions. Even though the energy of the repulsive polaron can become sizeable, we argue that saturated ferromagnetism is unfavorable in 2D because of the polaron's finite lifetime an…
We map out the interaction effects on the first six virial coefficients of one-dimensional Fermi gases with zero-range attractive and repulsive interactions, and the first four virial coefficients of the two-dimensional analog with attractive interactions. To that end, we use two non-perturbative stochastic methods: projection by complex stochastic quantization, which allows us to determine high-order coefficients at weak coupling and estimate the radius of convergence of the virial expansion; and a path-integral representation of the virial coefficients. To complement our numerical calculatio…
In this work we analyze the dynamical behavior of the collision between two clouds of fermionic atoms with opposite spin polarization. By means of the time-evolving block decimation (TEBD) numerical method, we simulate the collision of two one-dimensional clouds in a lattice. There is a symmetry in the collision behaviour between the attractive and repulsive interactions. We analyze the pair formation dynamics in the collision region, providing a quantitative analysis of the pair formation mechanism in terms of a simple two-site model.

We study harmonically trapped ultracold Bose gases with attractive interparticle interactions under external rotation in three spatial dimensions and determine the critical value of the attraction strength where the gas collapses as a function of the rotation frequency. To this end we examine the stationary state in the corotating frame with a many-body approach as well as within the Gross-Pitaevskii theory of systems in traps with different anisotropies. In contrast to recently reported results [N. A. Jamaludin, N. G. Parker, and A. M. Martin, Phys. Rev. A \textbf{77}, 051603(R) (2008)], we f…
The devil's staircase is a fractal structure that characterizes the ground state of one-dimensional classical lattice gases with long-range repulsive convex interactions. Its plateaus mark regions of stability for specific filling fractions which are controlled by a chemical potential. Typically such staircase has an explicit particle-hole symmetry, i.e., the staircase at more than half-filling can be trivially extracted from the one at less than half filling by exchanging the roles of holes and particles. Here we introduce a quantum spin chain with competing short-range attractive and long-ra…
We present results on the effect of short-range, attractive interactions on the properties of balanced 2D Fermi gases in the non-superfluid (normal) phase. Our approach combines the renormalization group (RG) with perturbation theory, yielding observables such as the equation of state and compressibility. We find good agreement with recent experiments that measured the equation of state in trapped gases in the balanced regime, showing that these results are consistent with logarithmic corrections in the equation of state.
We investigate an attractive force caused by light induced dipole-dipole interactions in freely expanding ultracold 87Rb atoms. This collective, light-triggered effect results in a self-confining potential with interesting features: it exhibits nonlocal properties, is attractive for both red and blue-detuned light fields and induces a remarkably strong force that depends on the gradient of the atomic density. The experimental data are discussed in the framework of a theoretical model based on a local-field approach for the light scattered by the atomic cloud.
The virial expansion characterizes the high-temperature approach to the quantum-classical crossover in any quantum many-body system. Here, we calculate the virial coefficients up to the fifth-order of Fermi gases in 1D, 2D, and 3D, with attractive contact interactions, as relevant for a variety of applications in atomic and nuclear physics. To that end, we discretize the imaginary-time direction and calculate the relevant canonical partition functions. In coarse discretizations, we obtain analytic results featuring relationships between the interaction-induced changes $Δb_3$, $Δb_4$, and $Δb_5…
Motivated by the realization of hard-wall boundary conditions in experiments with ultracold atoms, we investigate the ground-state properties of spin-1/2 fermions with attractive interactions in a one-dimensional box. We use lattice Monte Carlo methods to determine essential quantities like the energy, which we compute as a function of coupling strength and particle number in the regime from few to many particles. Many-fermion systems bound by hard walls display non-trivial density profiles characterized by so-called Friedel oscillations (which are similar to those observed in harmonic traps).…
Trapped two-component Fermi gases allow for the investigation of the so-called BCS-BEC crossover by tuning the interspecies atom-atom $s$-wave scattering length scattering $a^{(aa)}$ from attractive to repulsive, including vanishing and infinitely large values. Here, we numerically determine the energy spectrum of the equal-mass spin-balanced four-fermion system---the smallest few-particle system that exhibits BCS-BEC crossover-like behavior---as a function of $a^{(aa)}$ using the stochastic variational approach. For comparative purposes, we also treat the two- and three-particle systems. Stat…
We experimentally study universal nonequilibrium dynamics of two-dimensional atomic Bose gases quenched from repulsive to attractive interactions. We observe the manifestation of modulational instability that, instead of causing collapse, fragments a large two-dimensional superfluid into multiple wave packets universally around a threshold atom number necessary for the formation of Townes solitons. We confirm that the density distributions of quench-induced solitary waves are in excellent agreement with the stationary Townes profiles. Furthermore, our density measurements in the space and time…
Ultracold three-component atomic Fermi gases in one dimension are expected to exhibit rich physics due to the presence of trions and different pairing states. Quantum phase transitions from the trion state into a paired phase and a normal Fermi liquid occur at zero temperature. We derive the analytical thermodynamics of strongly attractive three-component one-dimensional fermions with SU(3) symmetry via the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz method in unequal Zeeman splitting fields $H_1$ and $H_2$. We find explicitly that for low temperature the system acts like either a two-component or a three-comp…
We study the effective Bloch-wave scattering of a spinless Fermi gas in one-dimensional (1D) optical lattices. By tuning the odd-wave scattering length, we find multiple resonances of Bloch-waves scattering at the bottom (and the top) of the lowest band, beyond which an attractive (and a repulsive) two-body bound state starts to emerge. These resonances exhibit comparable widths in the deep lattice limit, and the finite interaction range plays an essential role in determining their locations. Based on the exact two-body solutions, we construct an effective microscopic model for the low-energy …
We study Fermi gases in two dimensions at low temperatures with attractive interactions. Analytical results are derived for the equation of state and the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature as functions of the two-body binding energy and the density of the gas. Our results for the equation of state strongly deviate from the mean field predictions. However, they are in reasonable agreement with Monte-Carlo calculations and recent experiments with cold atomic gases.
We report in this Letter the results of our investigation of 2D Bose gases beyond the dilute limit emphasizing the role played by three-body scattering events. We demonstrate that a competition between three-body attractive interactions and two-body repulsive forces results in the chemical potential of 2D Bose gases to exhibit a maximum at a critical scattering length beyond which these quantum gases possess a negative compressibility. For larger scattering lengths, the increasingly prominent role played by three-body attractive interactions leads to an onset instability at a second critical v…
We investigate one dimensional attractive Fermi gases in spin-dependent optical lattices. We show that three-body bound states - "trimers" - exist as soon as the two tunneling rates are different. We calculate the binding energy and the effective mass of a single trimer. We then show numerically that for finite and commensurate densities $n_\uparrow=n_\downarrow/2$ an energy gap appears, implying that the gas is a one-component Luttinger liquid of trimers with suppressed superfluid ordering. The boundaries of this novel phase are given. We discuss experimental situations to test our prediction…
The effects of Rashba spin-orbit coupling on BCS-BEC crossover, the condensate fraction and pair coherence lengths for a two-component attractive Fermi gas in two dimension are studied. The results at $T=0K$ indicate that (1) when the strength of SOC is beyond a critical value, BCS-BEC crossover does not happen in a conventional sense; (2) SOC enhances the condensate fraction, but suppresses pair coherence lengths.
We realize and study an attractively interacting two-dimensional Fermi liquid. Using momentum resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we measure the self-energy, determine the contact parameter of the short-range interaction potential, and find their dependence on the interaction strength. We successfully compare the measurements to a theoretical analysis, properly taking into account the finite temperature, harmonic trap, and the averaging over several two-dimensional gases with different peak densities.
We develop a simple, mean-field-like theory for the normal phase of a unitary Fermi gas by deriving a self-consistent equation for its self-energy via a momentum-dependent coupling constant for both attractive and repulsive universal fermions. For attractive universal fermions in the lower branch of a Feshbach resonance, we use zero-temperature Monte Carlo results as a starting point for one-step iteration in order to derive an analytical expression for the momentum-dependent self-energy. For repulsive universal fermions in the upper branch of a Feshbach resonance, we iteratively calculate the…
The effect of nearest-neighbor repulsion on the ground-state phase diagrams of three-body constrained attractive Bose lattice gases is explored numerically. When the repulsion is turned on, in addition to the uniform Mott insulating state and two superfluid phases (the atomic and the dimer superfluids), a dimer checkerboard solid state appears at unit filling, where boson pairs form a solid with checkerboard structure. We find also that the first-order transitions between the uniform Mott insulating state and the atomic superfluid state can be turned into the continuous ones as the repulsion i…
In three spatial dimensions, in the unitary limit of a non-relativistic quantum Bose or Fermi gas, the scattering length diverges. This occurs at a renormalization group fixed point, thus these systems present interesting examples of interacting scale-invariant models with dynamical exponent z=2. We study this problem in two and three spatial dimensions using the S-matrix based approach to the thermodynamics we recently developed. It is well suited to the unitary limit where the S-matrix equals -1, since it allows an expansion in the inverse coupling. We define a meaningful scale-invariant, un…
We study the superfluid behavior of a population imbalanced ultracold atomic Fermi gases with a short range attractive interaction in a one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice, using a pairing fluctuation theory. We show that, besides widespread pseudogap phenomena and intermediate temperature superfluidity, the superfluid phase is readily destroyed except in a limited region of the parameter space. We find a new mechanism for pair hopping, assisted by the excessive majority fermions, in the presence of continuum-lattice mixing, which leads to an unusual constant BEC asymptote for $T_c$ that is i…
We study the ground state phase diagram of a mixture of bosonic and fermionic cold atoms confined on two- and three-dimensional optical lattices. The coupling between bosonic fluctuations and fermionic atoms can be attractive or repulsive and has similarities with electron-phonon coupling in crystals. We investigate behavior of the mixtures in the limit, where the Bogoliubov sound velocity that dictates bosonic dynamics is comparable to the Fermi velocity, hence the retardation effects are important part of the physics. The dynamic Lindhard response function of the fermionic density to changes…
Using a formalism based on the two-body S-matrix we study two-dimensional Bose and Fermi gases with both attractive and repulsive interactions. Approximate analytic expressions, valid at weak coupling and beyond, are developed and applied to the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition. We successfully recover the correct logarithmic functional form of the critical chemical potential and density for the Bose gas. For fermions, the BKT critical temperature is calculated in BCS and BEC regimes through consideration of Tan's contact.
Recent experimental advances in ultra-cold Fermi gases allow for exploring response functions under different dynamical conditions. In particular, the issue of obtaining a "quasi-repulsive" regime starting from a Fermi gas with an attractive inter-particle interaction while avoiding the formation of the two-body bound state is currently debated. Here, we provide a calculation of the density and spin response for a wide range of temperature and coupling both in the attractive and quasi-repulsive regime, whereby the system is assumed to evolve non-adiabatically toward the "upper branch" of the F…
We first show that the many-body Hamiltonian governing the physical properties of an alkaline-earth Yb-173 Fermi gas across the recently-realized orbital Feshbach resonance is exactly analogous to that of two-band s-wave superconductors with contact interactions: i.e., even though the free-particle bands have a tunable energy offset in between and are coupled by a Josephson-type attractive inter-band pair scattering, the intra-band interactions have exactly the same strength. We then introduce two intra-band order parameters within the BCS mean-field approximation, and investigate the competit…
Thermodynamic properties of matter are conveniently expressed as functional relations between variables known as equations of state. Here we experimentally determine the compressibility, density and pressure equations of state for an attractive 2D Fermi gas in the normal phase as a function of temperature and interaction strength. In 2D, interacting gases exhibit qualitatively different features to those found in 3D. This is evident in the normalized density equation of state, which peaks at intermediate densities corresponding to the crossover from classical to quantum behaviour.
Ultracold atomic Fermi gases have been a popular topic of research, with attention being paid recently to two-dimensional (2D) gases. In this work, we perform T=0 ab initio diffusion Monte Carlo calculations for a strongly interacting two-component Fermi gas confined to two dimensions. We first go over finite-size systems and the connection to the thermodynamic limit. After that, we illustrate pertinent 2D scattering physics and properties of the wave function. We then show energy results for the strong-coupling crossover, in between the Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) and Bardeen-Cooper-Schr…
