In Networked Control Systems (NCS), the absence of physical communication links in the loop leads to relevant issues, such as measurement delays and asynchronous execution of the control commands. These issues may lead to unwanted control behaviours. This ArXiv paper is intended to give additional results to the work presented in "Embedded Model Control of Networked Control Systems: an Experimental Case-study". The last one presents an original approach, based on the Embedded Model Control, to deal with experimental scenarios characterized by asynchronous control timing. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated with a differential-drive robot, first with high-fidelity simulations and finally with several experimental tests. Specifically, the present work aims to study the stability analysis of the EMC experimental setup and to give further experimental results, to complement those presented in the main paper, "Embedded Model Control of Networked Control Systems: an Experimental Case-study".
This paper proposes a novel transient stability assessment tool for networked microgrids based on neural Lyapunov methods. Assessing transient stability is formulated as a problem of estimating the dynamic security region of networked microgrids. We leverage neural networks to learn a local Lyapunov function in the state space. The largest security region is estimated based on the learned neural Lyapunov function, and it is used for characterizing disturbances that the networked microgrids can tolerate. The proposed method is tested and validated in a grid-connected microgrid, three networked …
This paper studies the stability and $\mathcal{H}_{\infty}$ performance analysis problem for linear networked and quantized control systems with both communication delays random packet losses. To deal with the network-induced uncertainties and random packet dropouts, a novel discrete-time stochastic system model is developed for continuous-time networked control systems, and further overapproximated via a polytopic system with norm-bounded uncertainty. Based on the overapproximated system model, sufficient conditions are established for linear networked and quantized control systems in differe…
Networked epidemic models have been widely adopted to describe propagation phenomena. The endemic equilibrium of these models is of great significance in the field of viral marketing, innovation dissemination, and information diffusion. However, its stability conditions have not been fully explored. In this paper we study the stability of the endemic equilibrium of a networked Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible (SIS) epidemic model with heterogeneous transition rates in a discrete-time manner. We show that the endemic equilibrium, if it exists, is asymptotically stable for any nontrivial initial…
A networked output feedback loop subject to packetized transmissions of the output signal is considered. Based on the small gain theorem, an easy-to-use stability criterion covering two important cases is presented. In the first case a packet numbering mechanism is employed whereas in the second case neither packet numbering nor synchronization between sender and receiver is assumed. The analysis makes use of acausal subsystems and deduces the optimal constant time delay that should be used in a nominal controller design such that additional packet delay variations introduced by the network ar…
In the present work, an embedded PI controller is designed for speed regulation of DC servomotor over a wireless network. The embedded controller integrates PI controller with a proposed time-delay estimator and an adaptive digital Smith predictor for its real time operation, which is the novelty of the work. The real time or rather online operation of the developed embedded controller over wireless network is possible mainly due to the contributions in terms of proposing a new empirical formula for time-delay estimation, viable approximation of time-delay, discretization scheme in developing …
This work mainly investigates the mean-square stability and stabilizability for a single-input single-output networked linear feedback system. The control signal in the networked system is transmitted over an unreliable channel. In this unreliable channel, the data transmission times, referred to as channel induced delays, are random values and the transmitted data could also be dropout with certain probability. The channel induced delays and packet dropout are modeled by an independent and identically distributed stochastic process with a fixed probability mass function. At the channel termin…
Filtered Smith predictors are well established for controlling linear plants with constant time delays. Apart from this classical application scenario, they are also employed within networked control loops, where the measurements are sent in separate packets over a transmission channel that is subject to time-varying delays. However, no stability guarantees can be given in this case. The present paper illustrates that the time-varying delays as well as the packetized character of the transmissions have to be taken into account for stability analysis. Hence, three network protocols, which use d…
Closed-loop control systems employ continuous sensing and actuation to maintain controlled variables within preset bounds and achieve the desired system output. Intentional disturbances in the system, such as in the case of cyberattacks, can compromise reachability of control goals, and in several cases jeopardize safety. The increasing connectivity and exposure of networked control to external networks has enabled attackers to compromise these systems by exploiting security vulnerabilities. Attacks against safety-critical control loops can not only drive the system over a trajectory different…
We consider the problem of designing distributed controllers to stabilize a class of networked systems, where each subsystem is dissipative and designs a reinforcement learning based local controller to maximize an individual cumulative reward function. We develop an approach that enforces dissipativity conditions on these local controllers at each subsystem to guarantee stability of the entire networked system. The proposed approach is illustrated on a DC microgrid example, where the objective is maintain voltage stability of the network using local distributed controllers at each generation …
This letter deals with the problem of quantifying resiliency of Networked Control Systems (NCSs) to Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks and variable network delays. Internal exponential stability and $\mathcal{L}_2$ external stability are studied. The closed-loop system is augmented with an auxiliary timer variable and analyzed in a hybrid system framework. Lyapunov-like conditions are given to ensure $0$-input global exponential stability and $\mathcal{L}_2$ external stability. A computationally affordable algorithm based on linear matrix inequalities is devised to provide trade-off curves betwee…
This work studies the mean-square stability and stabilization problem for networked feedback systems. Data transmission delays in the network channels of the systems are considered. It is assumed that these delays are i.i.d. processes with given probability mass functions (PMFs). A necessary and sufficient condition of mean-square (input-output) stability is studied for the networked feedback systems in terms of the input-output model and state-space model. Furthermore, according to this condition, mean-square stabilization via output feedback is studied for the networked feedback systems.
In this paper, we consider a class of denial-of-service (DoS) attacks, which aims at overloading the communication channel. On top of the security issue, continuous or periodic transmission of information within feedback loop is necessary for the effective control and stabilization of the system. In addition, uncertainty---originating from variation of parameters or unmodeled system dynamics---plays a key role in the system's stability. To address these three critical factors, we solve the joint control and security problem for an uncertain discrete-time Networked Control System (NCS) subject …
This paper deals with the design of scheduling policies for networked control systems whose shared networks have limited communication capacity and the controller to plant channels are vulnerable to jamming attacks. We assume that among N plants, only M (< N) plants can communicate with their controllers at any time instant, and the attack sequences follow an (m,k)-firm model, i.e., in any k consecutive time instants, the control inputs sent to some or all of the plants accessing the communication network, are deactivated at most at m (< k) time instants. We devise a new algorithm to allocate …
This paper considers the problem of characterizing the stability region of a large-scale networked system comprised of dissipative nonlinear subsystems, in a distributed and computationally tractable way. One standard approach to estimate the stability region of a general nonlinear system is to first find a Lyapunov function for the system and characterize its region of attraction as the stability region. However, classical approaches, such as sum-of-squares methods and quadratic approximation, for finding a Lyapunov function either do not scale to large systems or give very conservative estim…
A Passivity-Based Design for Stability and Robustness in Event-Triggered Networked Control Systems with Communication Delays, Signal Quantizations and Packet Dropouts
Recent control trends are increasingly relying on communication networks and wireless channels to close the loop for Internet-of-Things applications. Traditionally these approaches are model-based, i.e., assuming a network or channel model they are focused on stability analysis and appropriate controller designs. However the availability of such wireless channel modeling is fundamentally challenging in practice as channels are typically unknown a priori and only available through data samples. In this work we aim to develop algorithms that rely on channel sample data to determine the stability…
This paper investigates a distributed formation tracking control law for large-scale networks of mechanical systems. In particular, the formation network is represented by a directed communication graph with leaders and followers, where each agent is described as a port-Hamiltonian system with a constant mass matrix. Moreover, we adopt a distributed parameter approach to prove the scalable asymptotic stability of the network formation, i.e., the scalability with respect to the network size and the specific formation preservation. A simulation case illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed …
In this paper, we study the trade-off between the transmission cost and the control performance of the multi-loop networked control system subject to network-induced delay. Within the linear-quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) framework, the joint design of control policy and networking strategy is decomposed into separation optimization problems. Based on the trade-off analysis, a scalable, delay-dependent Value-of-Information (VoI) based scheduling policy is constructed to quantify the value of transmitting the data packet, and enables the decision-makers embedded in subsystems to determine the transmi…

This paper deals with Networked Control Systems (NCSs) whose shared networks have limited communication capacity and are prone to data losses. We assume that among (N) plants, only (M < N) plants can communicate with their controllers at any time instant. In addition, a control input, at any time instant, is lost in a channel with a probability (p). Our contributions are threefold. First, we identify necessary and sufficient conditions on the open-loop and closed-loop dynamics of the plants that ensure existence of purely time-dependent periodic scheduling sequences under which stability of ea…
This paper addresses the stabilization control problem for networked mobile robot subject to communication delay. A new state estimation filter namely past observation-based predictive filter is developed. This filter enables the prediction of system state from delayed measurement. The state estimator combined with developed control laws ensures the asymptotic stability of the networked system. Simulations with parameters extracted from a real robot system were conducted and results confirmed the correctness as well as applicability of proposed approach.
