This paper addresses the stabilization control problem for networked mobile robot subject to communication delay. A new state estimation filter namely past observation-based predictive filter is developed. This filter enables the prediction of system state from delayed measurement. The state estimator combined with developed control laws ensures the asymptotic stability of the networked system. Simulations with parameters extracted from a real robot system were conducted and results confirmed the correctness as well as applicability of proposed approach.

We investigate the problem of stabilizing an unknown networked linear system under communication constraints and adversarial disturbances. We propose the first provably stabilizing algorithm for the problem. The algorithm uses a distributed version of nested convex body chasing to maintain a consistent estimate of the network dynamics and applies system level synthesis to determine a distributed controller based on this estimated model. Our approach avoids the need for system identification and accommodates a broad class of communication delay while being fully distributed and scaling favorabl…
We introduce a versatile framework to model and study networked control systems (NCSs). An NCS is described as a feedback interconnection of a plant and a controller communicating through a bidirectional channel modelled by cascaded nonlinear two-port networks. This model is sufficiently rich to capture various properties of a real-world communication channel, such as distortion, interference, and nonlinearity. Uncertainties in the plant, controller and communication channels can be handled simultaneously in the framework. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the robust finite-g…

The automation of factories and manufacturing processes has been accelerating over the past few years, boosted by the Industry 4.0 paradigm, including diverse scenarios with mobile, flexible agents. Efficient coordination between mobile robots requires reliable wireless transmission in highly dynamic environments, often with strict timing requirements. Goal-oriented communication is a possible solution for this problem: communication decisions should be optimized for the target control task, providing the information that is most relevant to decide which action to take. From the control perspe…
In this paper, we consider a class of denial-of-service (DoS) attacks, which aims at overloading the communication channel. On top of the security issue, continuous or periodic transmission of information within feedback loop is necessary for the effective control and stabilization of the system. In addition, uncertainty---originating from variation of parameters or unmodeled system dynamics---plays a key role in the system's stability. To address these three critical factors, we solve the joint control and security problem for an uncertain discrete-time Networked Control System (NCS) subject …

This paper presents a new optimal filter namely past observation-based extended Kalman filter for the problem of localization of Internet-based mobile robot in which the control input and the feedback measurement suffer from communication delay. The filter operates through two phases: the time update and the data correction. The time update predicts the robot position by reformulating the kinematics model to be non-memoryless. The correction step corrects the prediction by extrapolating the delayed measurement to the present and then incorporating it to the being estimate as there is no delay.…
Motion control of mobile manipulators (a robotic arm mounted on a mobile base) can be challenging for complex tasks such as material and package handling. In this paper, a task-space stabilization controller based on Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) is designed and implemented to a 10 Degrees of Freedom (DOF) mobile manipulator which consists of a 7-DOF robotic arm and a 3-DOF mobile base. The system model is based on kinematic models where the end-effector orientation is parameterized directly by a rotation matrix. The state and control constraints as well as singularity constraints …
This work studies the mean-square stability and stabilization problem for networked feedback systems. Data transmission delays in the network channels of the systems are considered. It is assumed that these delays are i.i.d. processes with given probability mass functions (PMFs). A necessary and sufficient condition of mean-square (input-output) stability is studied for the networked feedback systems in terms of the input-output model and state-space model. Furthermore, according to this condition, mean-square stabilization via output feedback is studied for the networked feedback systems.

In this paper, we provide details of implementing a system for managing a fleet of autonomous mobile robots (AMR) operating in a factory or a warehouse premise. While the robots are themselves autonomous in its motion and obstacle avoidance capability, the target destination for each robot is provided by a global planner. The global planner and the ground vehicles (robots) constitute a multi agent system (MAS) which communicate with each other over a wireless network. Three different approaches are explored for implementation. The first two approaches make use of the distributed computing base…
This paper studies stochastic aperiodic stabilization of a networked control system (NCS) consisting of a continuous-time plant and a discrete-time controller. The plant and the controller are assumed to be connected by communication channels with i.i.d. time-varying delays. The delays are theoretically not required to be bounded even when the plant is unstable in the deterministic sense. In our NCS, the sampling interval is supposed to be determined directly by such communication delays. A necessary and sufficient inequality condition is presented for designing a state-feedback controller sta…
This paper studies the resilient control of networked systems in the presence of cyber attacks. In particular, we consider the state feedback stabilization problem for nonlinear systems when the state measurement is sent to the controller via a communication channel that only has a finite transmitting rate and is moreover subject to cyber attacks in the form of Denial-of-Service (DoS). We use a dynamic quantization method to update the quantization range of the encoder/decoder and characterize the number of bits for quantization needed to stabilize the system under a given level of DoS attacks…
We propose a novel framework for real-time communication-aware coverage control in networked robot swarms. Our framework unifies the robot dynamics with network-level message-routing to reach consensus on swarm formations in the presence of communication uncertainties by leveraging local information. Specifically, we formulate the communication-aware coverage as a cooperative graphical game, and use variational inference to reach mixed strategy Nash equilibria of the stage games. We experimentally validate the proposed approach in a mobile ad-hoc wireless network scenario using teams of aerial…

Multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) has long been a significant and everlasting research topic in both machine learning and control. With the recent development of (single-agent) deep RL, there is a resurgence of interests in developing new MARL algorithms, especially those that are backed by theoretical analysis. In this paper, we review some recent advances a sub-area of this topic: decentralized MARL with networked agents. Specifically, multiple agents perform sequential decision-making in a common environment, without the coordination of any central controller. Instead, the agents ar…
This paper studies the tracking control problem for nonholonomic mobile robots based on second order dynamics, with application to consensus tracking and formation tracking. The greatest novelty in this paper is that the reference trajectory can be arbitrarily chosen, in the sense that the condition of persistency excitation and any other requirements are not imposed on the leader. In this paper, at first, the tracking control of one leader with single follower is taken into consideration, which is converted to the stabilization of two relative subsystems by the design of an adjoint system. Th…

We consider the problem of cooperative motion coordination for multiple heterogeneous mobile vehicles subject to various constraints. These include nonholonomic motion constraints, constant speed constraints, holonomic coordination constraints, and equality/inequality geometric constraints. We develop a general framework involving differential-algebraic equations and viability theory to determine coordination feasibility for a coordinated motion control under heterogeneous vehicle dynamics and different types of coordination task constraints. If a coordinated motion solution exists for the der…
The heterogeneous system consisting of the wireless control system (WCS) and mobile agent system (MAS) is ubiquitous in Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) systems. Within this system, the positions of mobile agents may lead to shadow fading on the wireless channel that the WCS is controlled over and can significantly compromise the WCS's performance. This paper focuses on the controller design for the MAS to ensure the performance of WCS in the presence of WCS and MAS coupling. Firstly, the constrained finite field network (FFN) with profile-dependent switching topology is adopted to proceed…
