For an autonomous vehicle it is essential to observe the ongoing dynamics of a scene and consequently predict imminent future scenarios to ensure safety to itself and others. This can be done using different sensors and modalities. In this paper we investigate the usage of optical flow for predicting future semantic segmentations. To do so we propose a model that forecasts flow fields autoregressively. Such predictions are then used to guide the inference of a learned warping function that moves instance segmentations on to future frames. Results on the Cityscapes dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of optical-flow methods.
A common challenge posed to robust semantic segmentation is the expensive data annotation cost. Existing semi-supervised solutions show great potential for solving this problem. Their key idea is constructing consistency regularization with unsupervised data augmentation from unlabeled data for model training. The perturbations for unlabeled data enable the consistency training loss, which benefits semi-supervised semantic segmentation. However, these perturbations destroy image context and introduce unnatural boundaries, which is harmful for semantic segmentation. Besides, the widely adopted …

We propose a light-weight video frame interpolation algorithm. Our key innovation is an instance-level supervision that allows information to be learned from the high-resolution version of similar objects. Our experiment shows that the proposed method can generate state-of-the-art results across different datasets, with fractional computation resources (time and memory) of competing methods. Given two image frames, a cascade network creates an intermediate frame with 1) a flow-warping module that computes coarse bi-directional optical flow and creates an interpolated image via flow-based warpi…
Data-driven approaches for medium-range weather forecasting are recently shown extraordinarily promising for ensemble forecasting for their fast inference speed compared to traditional numerical weather prediction (NWP) models, but their forecast accuracy can hardly match the state-of-the-art operational ECMWF Integrated Forecasting System (IFS) model. Previous data-driven attempts achieve ensemble forecast using some simple perturbation methods, like initial condition perturbation and Monte Carlo dropout. However, they mostly suffer unsatisfactory ensemble performance, which is arguably attri…

Feature warping is a core technique in optical flow estimation; however, the ambiguity caused by occluded areas during warping is a major problem that remains unsolved. In this paper, we propose an asymmetric occlusion-aware feature matching module, which can learn a rough occlusion mask that filters useless (occluded) areas immediately after feature warping without any explicit supervision. The proposed module can be easily integrated into end-to-end network architectures and enjoys performance gains while introducing negligible computational cost. The learned occlusion mask can be further fe…

Learned video compression methods have demonstrated great promise in catching up with traditional video codecs in their rate-distortion (R-D) performance. However, existing learned video compression schemes are limited by the binding of the prediction mode and the fixed network framework. They are unable to support various inter prediction modes and thus inapplicable for various scenarios. In this paper, to break this limitation, we propose a versatile learned video compression (VLVC) framework that uses one model to support all possible prediction modes. Specifically, to realize versatile com…

In this paper we present a novel self-supervised method to anticipate the depth estimate for a future, unobserved real-world urban scene. This work is the first to explore self-supervised learning for estimation of monocular depth of future unobserved frames of a video. Existing works rely on a large number of annotated samples to generate the probabilistic prediction of depth for unseen frames. However, this makes it unrealistic due to its requirement for large amount of annotated depth samples of video. In addition, the probabilistic nature of the case, where one past can have multiple futur…
We propose to jointly learn multi-view geometry and warping between views of the same object instances for robust cross-view object detection. What makes multi-view object instance detection difficult are strong changes in viewpoint, lighting conditions, high similarity of neighbouring objects, and strong variability in scale. By turning object detection and instance re-identification in different views into a joint learning task, we are able to incorporate both image appearance and geometric soft constraints into a single, multi-view detection process that is learnable end-to-end. We validate…
Crowd flow forecasting, which aims to predict the crowds entering or leaving certain regions, is a fundamental task in smart cities. One of the key properties of crowd flow data is periodicity: a pattern that occurs at regular time intervals, such as a weekly pattern. To capture such periodicity, existing studies either fuse the periodic hidden states into channels for networks to learn or apply extra periodic strategies to the network architecture. In this paper, we devise a novel periodic residual learning network (PRNet) for a better modeling of periodicity in crowd flow data. Unlike existi…
