Soft robotic manipulators provide numerous advantages over conventional rigid manipulators in fragile environments such as the marine environment. However, developing analytic inverse models necessary for shape, motion, and force control of such robots remains a challenging problem. As an alternative to analytic models, numerical models can be learned using powerful machine learned methods. In this paper, the Kinematics Transformer is proposed for developing accurate and precise inverse kinematic models of soft robotic limbs. The proposed method re-casts the inverse kinematics problem as a sequential prediction problem and is based on the transformer architecture. Numerical simulations reveal that the proposed method can effectively be used in controlling a soft limb. Benchmark studies also reveal that the proposed method has better accuracy and precision compared to the baseline feed-forward neural network
The compliance of soft robotic arms renders the development of accurate kinematic & dynamical models especially challenging. The most widely used model in soft robotic kinematics assumes Piecewise Constant Curvature (PCC). However, PCC fails to effectively handle external forces, or even the influence of gravity, since the robot does not deform with a constant curvature under these conditions. In this paper, we establish three-dimensional (3D) modeling of a multi-segment soft robotic arm under the less restrictive assumption that each segment of the arm is deformed on a plane without twisting.…

Soft robots offer an alternative approach to manipulate inside the constrained space while maintaining the safe interaction with the external environment. Due to its adaptable compliance characteristic, external contact force can easily deform the robot shapes and lead to undesired robot kinematic and dynamic properties. Accurate contact detection and contact position estimation are of critical importance for soft robot modeling, control, trajectory planning, and eventually affect the success of task completion. In this paper, we focus on the study of 1-DoF soft pneumatic bellow bending actuat…
Model-based control usually relies on an accurate model, which is often obtained from CAD and actuator models. The more accurate the model the better the control performance. However, in bipedal robots that demonstrate high agility actions, such as running and hopping, the robot hardware will suffer from impacts with the environment and deform in vulnerable parts, which invalidates the predefined model. Thus, it is desired to have an adaptable kinematic structure that takes deformation into consideration. To account for this we propose an approach that models all of the robotic joints as 6-DOF…

Many soft-body organisms found in nature flourish underwater. Similarly, soft robots are potentially well-suited for underwater environments partly because the problematic effects of gravity, friction, and harmonic oscillations are less severe underwater. However, it remains a challenge to design, fabricate, waterproof, model, and control underwater soft robotic systems. Furthermore, submersible robots usually do not have configurable components because of the need for sealed electronics and mechanical elements. This work presents the development of a modular and submersible soft robotic arm d…

Estimating precise metric depth and scene reconstruction from monocular endoscopy is a fundamental task for surgical navigation in robotic surgery. However, traditional stereo matching adopts binocular images to perceive the depth information, which is difficult to transfer to the soft robotics-based surgical systems due to the use of monocular endoscopy. In this paper, we present a novel framework that combines robot kinematics and monocular endoscope images with deep unsupervised learning into a single network for metric depth estimation and then achieve 3D reconstruction of complex anatomy.…
Soft robots are promising for manipulation tasks thanks to their compliance, safety, and high degree of freedom. However, the commonly used bidirectional continuum segment design means soft robotic manipulators only function in a limited hemispherical workspace. This work increases a soft robotic arm's workspace by designing, fabricating, and controlling an additional soft prismatic actuator at the base of the soft arm. This actuator consists of pneumatic artificial muscles and a piston, making the actuator back-driveable. We increase the task space volume by 116\%, and we are now able to perf…

With the recent advances in machine learning, problems that traditionally would require accurate modeling to be solved analytically can now be successfully approached with data-driven strategies. Among these, computing the inverse kinematics of a redundant robot arm poses a significant challenge due to the non-linear structure of the robot, the hard joint constraints and the non-invertible kinematics map. Moreover, most learning algorithms consider a completely data-driven approach, while often useful information on the structure of the robot is available and should be positively exploited. In…

Although the kinematics and dynamics of spherical robots (SRs) on flat horizontal and inclined 2D surfaces are thoroughly investigated, their rolling behavior on generic 3D terrains has remained unexplored. This paper derives the kinematics equations of the most common SRs configurations rolling over 3D surfaces. First, the kinematics equations for a geometrical sphere rolling over a 3D surface are derived along with the characterization of the modeling method. Next, a brief review of current SR mechanical configurations is presented as well as a novel classification for spherical robots based…

Mobile robots have been widely used in various aspects of human life. When a robot moves between different positions in the working area to perform the task, controlling motion to follow a pre-defined path is the primary task of a mobile robot. Furthermore, the robot must remain at its desired speed to cooperate with other agents. This paper presents a development of a motion controller, in which the fuzzy logic method is combined with a kinematic model of a differential drive robot. The simulation results are compared well with experimental results indicate that the method is effective and ap…
This paper discusses modelling two 6 DOF arm robots. The first step of modelling a robot is establishing its Denavit-Hartenberg parameters. It requires assigning proper coordinates for each link and finding their exact dimensions. In this project we will develop the direct kinematics and workspace representations for two manipulators: the Smokie Robot and the Barrett WAM. After finding the D-H parameters and creating Transformation Matrices,MATLAB programming is used to represent their workspaces.

In this paper, WALK-VIO, a novel visual-inertial odometry (VIO) with walking-motion-adaptive leg kinematic constraints that change with body motion for localization of quadruped robots, is proposed. Quadruped robots primarily use VIO because they require fast localization for control and path planning. However, since quadruped robots are mainly used outdoors, extraneous features extracted from the sky or ground cause tracking failures. In addition, the quadruped robots' walking motion cause wobbling, which lowers the localization accuracy due to the camera and inertial measurement unit (IMU). …

We exemplify our skill transfer approach with data from an experimental task in which a tool touches a support surface with a target velocity. Prototypical task executions are identified and transferred to a generic robot arm in simulation. The results illustrate how task models based on skill and performance features can…
In this paper we present a novel algorithm to solve the robot kinematic structure identification problem. Given a time series of data, typically obtained processing a set of visual observations, the proposed approach identifies the ordered sequence of links associated to the kinematic chain, the joint type interconnecting each couple of consecutive links, and the input signal influencing the relative motion. Compared to the state of the art, the proposed algorithm has reduced computational costs, and is able to identify also the joints' type sequence.
Industrial robots are increasingly used in various applications where the robot accuracy becomes very important, hence calibrations of the robot's kinematic parameters and the measurement system's extrinsic parameters are required. However, the existing calibration approaches are either too cumbersome or require another expensive external measurement system such as laser tracker or measurement spinarm. In this paper, we propose SCALAR, a calibration method to simultaneously improve the kinematic parameters of a 6-DoF robot and the extrinsic parameters of a 2D Laser Range Finder (LRF) which is …

This paper is about the kinematics, the workspace and singularity analysis of a 3-PRPiR parallel robot involving lockable Pi and R (revolute) joints. Here a Pi joint may act as a 1-DOF planar parallelogram if its lock-able P (prismatic) joint is locked or a 2-DOF RR serial chain if its lockable P joint is released. The operation modes of the robot include a 3T operation modes to three 2T1R operation modes with two different di…
Path planning for multiple robots is well studied in the AI and robotics communities. For a given discretized environment, robots need to find collision-free paths to a set of specified goal locations. Robots can be fully anonymous, non-anonymous, or organized in groups. Although powerful solvers for this abstract problem exist, they make simplifying assumptions by ignoring kinematic constraints, making it difficult to use the resulting plans on actual robots. In this paper, we present a solution which takes kinematic constraints, such as maximum velocities, into account, while guaranteeing a …

Voxel-based structures provide a modular, mechanically flexible periodic lattice which can be used as a soft robot through internal deformations. To engage these structures for robotic tasks, we use a finite element method to characterize the motion caused by deforming single degrees of freedom and develop a reduced kinematic model. We find that node translations propagate periodically along geometric planes within the lattice, and briefly show that translational modes dominate the energy usage of the actuators. The resulting kinematic model frames the structural deformations in terms of user-…

The manuscript discusses still preliminary considerations with regard to the dynamics and kinematics of an egg shaped robot with an gyro driven inertia actuator. The method of calculation follows the idea that we would like to express the entire dynamic equations in terms of moments instead of forces. Also we avoid to derive the equations from a Lagrange function with constraints. The result of the calculations is meant to be applicable to two robot prototypes that have been build at the AES\&R Laboratory at the National Chung Cheng University in Taiwan.

Accurate kinematic models are essential for effective control of surgical robots. For tendon driven robots, which is common for minimally invasive surgery, intrinsic nonlinearities are important to consider. Traditional analytical methods allow to build the kinematic model of the system by making certain assumptions and simplifications on the nonlinearities. Machine learning techniques, instead, allow to recover a more complex model based on the acquired data. However, analytical models are more generalisable, but can be over-simplified; data-driven models, on the other hand, can cater for mor…

Re-configurable modular robotic (RMR) systems are advantageous for their reconfigurability and versatility. A new modular robot can be built for a specific task by using modules as building blocks. However, constructing a kinematic model for a newly conceived robot requires significant work. Due to the finite size of module-types, models of all module-types can be built individually and stored in a database beforehand. With this priori knowledge, the model construction process can be automated by detecting the modules and their corresponding interconnections. Previous literature proposed theor…

This paper presents an efficient learning-based method to solve the inverse kinematic (IK) problem on soft robots with highly non-linear deformation. The major challenge of efficiently computing IK for such robots is due to the lack of analytical formulation for either forward or inverse kinematics. To address this challenge, we employ neural networks to learn both the mapping function of forward kinematics and also the Jacobian of this function. As a result, Jacobian-based iteration can be applied to solve the IK problem. A sim-to-real training transfer strategy is conducted to make this appr…

We investigate the problem of multi-robot coordinated planning in environments where the robots may have to operate in close proximity to each other. We seek computationally efficient planners that ensure safe paths and adherence to kinematic constraints. We extend the central planner dRRT* with our variant, fast-dRRT (fdRRT), with the intention being to use in tight environments that lead to a high degree of coupling between robots. Our algorithm is empirically shown to achieve the trade-off between computational time and solution quality, especially in tight environments.
A polynomial solution to the inverse kinematic problem of the Kinova Gen3 Lite robot is proposed in this paper. This serial robot is based on a 6R kinematic chain and is not wrist-partitioned. We first start from the forward kinematics equation providing the position and orientation of the end-effector, finally, the univariate polynomial equation is given as a function of the first joint variable $θ_{1}$. The remaining joint variables are computed by back substitution. Thus, an unique set of joint position is obtain for each root of the univariate equation. Numerical examples, simulated in ROS…
