Cosmic rays in star-forming galaxies are a dominant source of both diffuse $γ$-ray emission and ionisation in gas too deeply shielded for photons to penetrate. Though the cosmic rays responsible for $γ$-rays and ionisation are of different energies, they are produced by the same star formation-driven sources, and thus galaxies' star formation rates, $γ$-ray luminosities, and ionisation rates should all be linked. In this paper we use up-to-date cross-section data to determine this relationship, finding that cosmic rays in a galaxy of star formation rate $\dot{M}_*$ and gas depletion time $t_\mathrm{dep}$ produce a maximum primary ionisation rate $ζ\approx 1\times 10^{-16} (t_\mathrm{dep}/\mbox{Gyr})^{-1}$ s$^{-1}$ and a maximum $γ$-ray luminosity $L_γ\approx 4\times 10^{39} (\dot{M}_*/\mathrm{M}_\odot\mbox{ yr}^{-1})$ erg s$^{-1}$ in the 0.1 - 100 GeV band. These budgets imply either that the ionisation rates measured in Milky Way molecular clouds include a significant contribution from local sources that elevate them above the Galactic mean, or that CR-driven ionisation in the Milky Way is enhanced by sources not linked directly to star formation. Our results also imply that ionisation rates in starburst systems are only moderately enhanced compared to those in the Milky Way. Finally, we point out that measurements of $γ$-ray luminosities can be used to place constraints on galactic ionisation budgets in starburst galaxies that are nearly free of systematic uncertainties on the details of cosmic ray acceleration.
We investigate the evolution of the ionisation parameter of star-forming galaxies using a high-redshift ($z\sim 1.5$) sample from the FMOS-COSMOS survey and matched low-redshift samples from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. By constructing samples of low-redshift galaxies for which the stellar mass ($\mathrm{M}_{*}$), star formation rate (SFR) and specific star formation rate (sSFR) are matched to the high-redshift sample we remove the effects of an evolution in these properties. We also account for the effect of metallicity by jointly constraining the metallicity and ionisation parameter of each…
A field with particularly exciting results over the past few years is the study of the interaction of cosmic rays with interstellar matter. For star formation to take place, gas and dust need to be sufficiently cold for gravity to overcome thermal pressure, and the ionisation fraction must be low enough to enable substantial decoupling between the gas and the Galactic magnetic field. As soon as the visual extinction is of the order of 3-4 magnitudes, the ultraviolet photon flux from the interstellar radiation field is fully quenched, thus the only source of ionisation and heating is provided b…
We measured gas-phase metallicity, ionisation parameter and dust extinction for 1795 representative local star-forming galaxies using integral field spectroscopy from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey. We self-consistently derive these quantities by comparing observed line fluxes with photoionisation models using a Bayesian framework. We also present the first comprehensive study of the [SIII]$λλ$9069,9532 nebular lines, which have long been predicted to be ideal tracers of the ionisation parameter. Unfortunately, we find that current photoionisation models substantially over-predict [SIII] lines inten…
Cosmic rays are a global source of ionisation, and the ionisation fraction represents a fundamental parameter in the interstellar medium. Ions couple to magnetic fields, affect the chemistry, and the dynamics of star-forming regions as well as planetary atmospheres. However, the cosmic-ray ionisation rate represents one of the bottlenecks for astrochemical models, and its determination is one of the most puzzling problems in astrophysics. While for diffuse clouds reasonable values have been provided from H$_3^+$ observations, for dense clouds, due to the lack of rotational transitions, this is…

We study pre-supernova feedback in a sample of $\sim$ 4700 HII regions in the nearby spiral galaxy M83, identified on their H$α$ emission. We pectroscopically identify Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars populating the star-forming regions. For each HII region, we compute the pressure of ionised gas ($P_{\rm ion}$) and the direct radiation pressure ($P_{\rm dir}$) acting in the region, and investigate how they vary with galactocentric distance, with the physical properties of the region, and with the pressure of the galactic environment ($P_\mathrm{DE}$). For a subset of $\sim$ 500 regions, we also investig…
We present a new method to derive oxygen and carbon abundances using the ultraviolet (UV) lines emitted by the gas-phase ionised by massive stars. The method is based on the comparison of the nebular emission-line ratios with those predicted by a large grid of photo-ionisation models. Given the large dispersion in the O/H - C/O plane, our method firstly fixes C/O using ratios of appropriate emission lines and, in a second step, calculates O/H and the ionisation parameter from carbon lines in the UV. We find abundances totally consistent with those provided by the direct method when we apply th…
The evolution of collapsing clouds embedded in different star-forming environments is investigated using three-dimensional non-ideal magnetohydrodynamics simulations considering different cloud metallicities ($Z/\thinspace Z_\odot$ = 0, 10$^{-5}$, 10$^{-4}$, 10$^{-3}$, 10$^{-2}$, 10$^{-1}$ and 1) and ionisation strengths ($C_ζ$=0, 0.01, 1 and 10, where $C_ζ$ is a coefficient controlling the ionisation intensity and $C_ζ=1$ corresponds to the ionisation strength of nearby star-forming regions). With all combinations of these considered values of $Z/\thinspace Z_\odot$ and $C_ζ$, 28 different st…
We present a new model to compute the luminosity of emission lines in star forming galaxies and apply this in the semi-analytical galaxy formation code GALFORM. The model combines a pre-computed grid of HII region models with an empirical determination of how the properties of HII regions depend on the macroscopic properties of galaxies based on observations of local galaxies. The new model gives a very good reproduction of the locus of star-forming galaxies on standard line ratio diagnostic diagrams. The new model shows evolution in the locus of star forming galaxies with redshift on this lin…
Cluster star-forming galaxies are found to have an excess of Far-Infrared emission relative to H-alpha (Ha), when compared to those in the field, which could be caused by intense AGN activity, dust and/or declining star formation histories. Here we present spectroscopic observations of Ha emitters in the Cl 0939+4713 (Abell 851) super-cluster at z=0.41, using AF2+WYFFOS on the WHT. We measure [OII], Hbeta (Hb), [OIII], Ha and [NII] for a sample of 119 Ha emitters in and around the cluster. We find that 17+-5% of the Ha emitters are AGN, irrespective of environment. For star-forming galaxies, w…
We present simulations of star forming filaments incorporating on of the largest chemical network used to date on-the-fly in a 3D-MHD simulation. The network contains 37 chemical species and about 300 selected reaction rates. For this we use the newly developed package KROME (Grassi et al. 2014). We combine the KROME package with an algorithm which allows us to calculate the column density and attenuation of the interstellar radiation field necessary to properly model heating and ionisation rates. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of using such a complex chemical network in 3D-MHD simula…
Galaxy surveys targeting emission lines are characterising the evolution of star-forming galaxies, but there is still little theoretical progress in modelling their physical properties. We predict nebular emission from star-forming galaxies within a cosmological galaxy formation model. Emission lines are computed by combining the semi-analytical model \sag\ with the photoionisation code \mapp. We characterise the interstellar medium (ISM) of galaxies by relating the ionisation parameter of gas in galaxies to their cold gas metallicity, obtaining a reasonable agreement with the observed \ha, \o…
Star-forming galaxies (SFGs) emit non-thermal radiation from radio to gamma-rays. We aim to investigate the main mechanisms of global CR transport and cooling in SFGs. The way they contribute in shaping the relations between non-thermal luminosities and SFR could shed light onto their nature. We develop a model to compute the CR populations of SFGs, taking into account their production, transport, and cooling. The model is parameterised only through global galaxy properties, and describes the non-thermal emission in both radio and gamma-rays. We focus on the role of diffusive and advective tra…
We compare the three-dimensional gas temperature distributions obtained by a dedicated radiative transfer and photoionisation code, MOCASSIN, against those obtained by the recently-developed Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) plus ionisation code iVINE for snapshots of an hydrodynamical simulation of a turbulent interstellar medium (ISM) irradiated by a nearby O star. Our tests demonstrate that the global ionisation properties of the region are correctly reproduced by iVINE, hence validating further application of this code to the study of feedback in star forming regions. However we highligh…
This paper presents a detailed spectral pixel (spaxel) analysis of the ten Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs) previously observed with the Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS), an integral field spectrograph mounted on the ANU 2.3m telescope, and for which an abundance gradient analysis has already been presented by Rich et al. (2012). Here we use the strong emission line analysis techniques developed by Dopita et al. (2013) to measure the ionisation parameter and the oxygen abundance in each spaxel. In addition, we use the observed H$α$ flux to determine the surface rate of star formation ($M_{\od…
It has been reported that there is a deficit of stellar heated dust, as evident from the lack of far-infrared (FIR) emission, in sources within the Herschel-SPIRE sample with X-ray luminosities exceeding a ``critical value'' of L~10^37 W. Such a scenario would be consistent with the suppression of star formation by the AGN, required by current theoretical models. Since absorption of the 21-cm transition of neutral hydrogen (HI), which traces the star-forming reservoir, also exhibits a critical value in the ultra-violet band (above ionising photon rates of Q ~ 3 x 10^56 s^-1), we test the SPIRE…
Feedback from photoionisation may dominate on parsec scales in massive star-forming regions. Such feedback may inhibit or enhance the star formation efficiency and sustain or even drive turbulence in the parent molecular cloud. Photoionisation feedback may also provide a mechanism for the rapid expulsion of gas from young clusters' potentials, often invoked as the main cause of 'infant mortality'. There is currently no agreement, however, with regards to the efficiency of this process and how environment may affect the direction (positive or negative) in which it proceeds. The study of the pho…
With the goal of a thorough investigation of the ionised gas and its origin in early-type group-dominant galaxies, we present archival MUSE data for 18 galaxies from the Complete Local-Volume Groups Sample (CLoGS). This data allowed us to study the spatially-resolved warm gas properties, including the morphology of the ionised gas, EW(H$α$) and kinematics as well as the gas-phase metallicity (12 + log(O/H)) of these systems. In order to distinguish between different ionisation mechanisms, we used the emission-line ratios [O III]/H$β$ and [N II]/H$α$ in the BPT diagrams and EW(H$α$). We find th…
We examine the diagnostic power of rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) nebular emission lines, and compare them to more commonly used rest-frame optical emission lines, using the test case of a single star-forming knot of the bright lensed galaxy RCSGA 032727-132609 at redshift z~1.7. This galaxy has complete coverage of all the major rest-frame UV and optical emission lines from Magellan/MagE and Keck/NIRSPEC. Using the full suite of diagnostic lines, we infer the physical properties: nebular electron temperature (T_e), electron density (n_e), oxygen abundance (log(O/H)), ionisation parameter (log(q)…
(Abridged) We aim to determine the degrees of CO depletion, deuterium fractionation, and ionisation in a sample of seven massive clumps associated with IRDCs. The APEX telescope was used to observe the C17O(2-1), H13CO+(3-2), DCO+(3-2), N2H+(3-2), and N2D+(3-2) transitions towards the clumps. The CO molecules do not appear to be significantly depleted in the observed clumps. The DCO+/HCO+ and N2D+/N2H+ column density ratios are about 0.0002-0.014 and 0.002-0.028, respectively. The former ratio is found to decrease as a function of gas kinetic temperature. A simple chemical analysis suggests th…
We assess the ionising effect of low energy protostellar cosmic rays in protoplanetary disks around a young solar mass star for a wide range of disk parameters. We assume a source of low energy cosmic rays located close to the young star which travel diffusively through the protoplanetary disk. We use observationally inferred values from nearby star-forming regions for the total disk mass and the radial density profile. We investigate the influence of varying the disk mass within the observed scatter for a solar mass star. We find that for a large range of disk masses and density profiles that…

Using integral field spectroscopic data of 24 nearby spiral galaxies obtained with the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE), we derive empirical calibrations to determine the metallicity of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) and/or of the low-ionisation emission region (LI(N)ER) in passive regions of galaxies. To do so, we identify a large number of HII--DIG/LIER pairs that are close enough to be chemically homogeneous and we measure the metallicity difference of each DIG/LIER region relative to its HII region companion when applying the same strong line calibrations. The O3N2 diagnostic ($=$lo…

The physical conditions of the gas forming the narrow line regions (NLR) in active galactic nuclei (AGN) have been extensively studied in the optical band. We take advantage of the spectacular extension ($\sim$15") of the NLR in the type II Seyfert galaxy NGC 5252 and of the complementary characteristics of $XMM$--$Newton$ and $Chandra$ to investigate the physical conditions of the gas in this galaxy. The X-ray data from $XMM$--$Newton$ are used to define the spectral properties of the ionising nuclear source. The $Chandra$ data are used to trace the spatial characteristics of the soft X-ray e…
The HII regions are all studied employing the same general prescriptions, despite the possible influence of their environment in their star formation processes. Through the analysis of two samples of 725 inner and 671 outer disk HII region observed spectra, we explore possible systematic differences between their ionising clusters physical properties (metallicity, mass, and age), comparing observations and predictions by photoionisation models. Higher metallicities are confirmed for inner regions, although there are important discrepancies between the diagnostic diagrams. Calibrations based on…
The formation of protostellar discs is severely hampered by magnetic braking, as long as magnetic fields remain frozen in the gas. The latter condition depends on the levels of ionisation that characterise the innermost regions of a collapsing cloud. The chemistry of dense cloud cores and, in particular, the ionisation fraction is largely controlled by cosmic rays. The aim of this paper is to evaluate whether the attenuation of the flux of cosmic rays expected in the regions around a forming protostar is sufficient to decouple the field from the gas, thereby influencing the formation of centri…
We present the addition of nebular emission from the narrow-line regions (NLR) surrounding active galactic nuclei (AGN) to BEAGLE (BayEsian Analysis of GaLaxy sEds). Using a set of idealised spectra, we fit to a set of observables (emission-line ratios and fluxes) and test the retrieval of different physical parameters. We find that fitting to standard diagnostic-line ratios from Baldwin et al. (1981) plus [O II]3726,3729/[O III]5007, Hbeta/ Halpha, [O I]6300/[O II]3726,3729 and Halpha flux, degeneracies remain between dust-to-metal mass ratio and ionisation parameter in the NLR gas, and betwe…
We study the spatially resolved excitation properties of the ionised gas in a sample of 646 galaxies using integral field spectroscopy data from SDSS-IV MaNGA. Making use of Baldwin-Philips-Terlevich diagnostic diagrams we demonstrate the ubiquitous presence of extended (kpc scale) low ionisation emission-line regions (LIERs) in both star forming and quiescent galaxies. In star forming galaxies LIER emission can be associated with diffuse ionised gas, most evident as extra-planar emission in edge-on systems. In addition, we identify two main classes of galaxies displaying LIER emission: `centr…
We exploit deep integral-field spectroscopic observations with KMOS/VLT of 240 star-forming disks at 0.6 < z < 2.6 to dynamically constrain their mass budget. Our sample consists of massive ($\gtrsim 10^{9.8} M_\odot$) galaxies with sizes $R_e \gtrsim 2$ kpc. By contrasting the observed velocity and dispersion profiles to dynamical models, we find that on average the stellar content contributes $32^{+8}_{-7}\%$ of the total dynamical mass, with a significant spread among galaxies (68th percentile range f_star ~ 18 - 62%). Including molecular gas as inferred from CO- and dust-based scaling rela…
One of the key questions in observational cosmology is the identification of the sources responsible for ionisation of the Universe after the cosmic Dark Ages, when the baryonic matter was neutral. The currently identified distant galaxies are insufficient to fully reionise the Universe by redshift z~6, but low-mass star-forming galaxies are thought to be responsible for the bulk of the ionising radiation. Since direct observations at high redshift are difficult for a variety of reasons, one solution is to identify local proxies of this galaxy population. However, starburst galaxies at low red…
The epoch corresponding to a redshift of z $\sim 6.5$ is close to full re-ionisation of the Universe, and early enough to provide an intriguing environment to observe the early stage of large-scale structure formation. It is also en epoch that can be used to verify the abundance of a large population of low luminosity star-forming galaxies, that are deemed responsible for cosmic re-ionisation. Here, we present the results of follow-up multi-object spectroscopy using OSIRIS at Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) of 16 Ly$α$ emitter (LAE) candidates discovered in the Subaru/XMM Newton Deep Survey. We…
Finding reliable indicators of Lyman continuum (LyC) photon leakage from galaxies is essential in order to infer their escape fraction in the epoch of reionisation, where direct measurements of LyC flux are impossible. To this end, here we investigate whether strong C IV $λλ1548,1550$ emission in the rest-frame UV spectra of galaxies traces conditions ripe for ample production and escape of LyC photons. We compile a sample of 19 star-forming galaxies in the redshift range $z=3.1-4.6$ from the VANDELS survey that exhibit strong C IV emission, producing a stacked spectrum where all major rest-UV…
Star-forming galaxies (SFGs) with stellar masses below $10^{10}\,M_\odot$ make up the bulk of the galaxy population at $z>2$. The properties of the cold gas in these galaxies can only be probed in very deep ALMA observations or by targeting strongly lensed galaxies. Here we report the results of a pilot survey using the Atacama Compact Array (ACA) of molecular gas in the most strongly magnified galaxies selected as giant arcs in optical data. The selection in rest-frame UV wavelengths ensures that sources are regular star forming galaxies, without a priori indications of intense dusty starburs…
We analyze the physical properties and energy balance of density enhancements in two SPH simulations of the formation, evolution, and collapse of giant molecular clouds. In the simulations, no feedback is included, so all motions are due either to the initial, decaying turbulence, or to gravitational contraction. We define clumps as connected regions above a series of density thresholds. The resultingfull set of clumps follows the generalized energy-equipartition relation $σ_{v}/R^{1/2} \propto Σ^{1/2}$, where $σ_{v}$ is the velocity dispersion, $R$ is the "radius", and $Σ$ is the column densi…
Recently, there has been an increased interest in the study of the generation of low-energy cosmic rays (CRs; < 1 TeV) in shocks situated on the surface of a protostar or along protostellar jets. These locally accelerated CRs offer an attractive explanation for the high levels of non-thermal emission and ionisation rate, $ζ$, observed close to these sources. The high $ζ$ observed in some protostellar sources is generally attributed to shock-generated UV photons. The aim of this article is to show that when synchrotron emission and a high $ζ$ are measured in the same spatial region, a locally s…

We present metallicity gradients in 49 local field star-forming galaxies. We derive gas-phase oxygen abundances using two widely adopted metallicity calibrations based on the [OIII]/Hbeta, [NII]/Halpha and [NII]/[OII] line ratios. The two derived metallicity gradients are usually in good agreement within +/-0.14 dex/R25 (R25 is the B-band iso-photoal radius), but the metallicity gradients can differ significantly when the ionisation parameters change systematically with radius. We investigate the metallicity gradients as a function of stellar mass (8<log(M*/Msun)<11) and absolute B-band lumino…
Lyman-alpha (Lya) is intrinsically the brightest line emitted from active galaxies. While it originates from many physical processes, for star-forming galaxies the intrinsic Lya luminosity is a direct tracer of the Lyman-continuum (LyC) radiation produced by the most massive O- and early-type B-stars with lifetimes of a few Myrs. As such, Lya luminosity should be an excellent instantaneous star formation rate (SFR) indicator. However, its resonant nature and susceptibility to dust as a rest-frame UV photon makes Lya very hard to interpret due to the uncertain Lya escape fraction, f$_{esc,Lyα}$…
Exploring the hardness of the ionising radiation with the infrared softness diagram. I. Similar effective temperature scales for starbursts and (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies
The formation of stars and planetary systems is a complex phenomenon, which relies on the interplay of multiple physical processes. Nonetheless, it represents a crucial stage for our understanding of the Universe, and in particular of the conditions leading to the formation of key molecules (e.g. water) on comets and planets. Herschel observations demonstrated that stars form out of gaseous filamentary structures in which the main constituent is molecular hydrogen (H$_2$). Depending on its nuclear spin H$_2$ can be found in two forms: `ortho' with parallel spins and `para' where the spins are …
This paper investigates the gravitational trapping of HII regions predicted by steady-state analysis using radiation hydrodynamical simulations. We present idealised spherically symmetric radiation hydrodynamical simulations of the early evolution of HII regions including the gravity of the central source. As with analytic steady state solutions of spherically symmetric ionised Bondi accretion flows, we find gravitationally trapped HII regions with accretion through the ionisation front onto the source. We found that, for a constant ionising luminosity, fluctuations in the ionisation front are…

The far-IR range is a critical wavelength range to characterize the physical and chemical processes that transform the interstellar material into stars and planets. Objects in the earliest phases of stellar and planet evolution release most of their energy at these long wavelengths. In this contribution we briefly summarise some of the most relevant scientific advances achieved by the Herschel Space Observatory in the field. We also anticipate those that will be made possible by the large increase in sensitivity of SPICA cooled telescope. It is concluded that only through sensitive far-IR obse…
