We measured gas-phase metallicity, ionisation parameter and dust extinction for 1795 representative local star-forming galaxies using integral field spectroscopy from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey. We self-consistently derive these quantities by comparing observed line fluxes with photoionisation models using a Bayesian framework. We also present the first comprehensive study of the [SIII]$λλ$9069,9532 nebular lines, which have long been predicted to be ideal tracers of the ionisation parameter. Unfortunately, we find that current photoionisation models substantially over-predict [SIII] lines intensity, while broadly reproducing other observed optical line ratios. We discuss how to nonetheless make use of the information provided by [SIII] lines by setting a prior on the ionisation parameter. Following this approach, we derive spatially-resolved maps and radial profiles of metallicity and ionisation parameter. The metallicity radial profiles are comparable with previous works, with metallicity declining toward the outer parts and a flattening in the central regions, in agreement with infall models of galaxy formation, that predict that spiral discs build up through accretion of material, which leads to an inside-out growth. On the other hand, ionisation parameter radial profiles are flat for low-mass galaxies, while their slope becomes positive as galaxy mass increases. However, the ionisation parameter maps we obtain are clumpy, especially for low-mass galaxies. Ionisation parameter is tightly correlated with the H$α$ equivalent width [EW(H$α$)], following a nearly universal relation, which we attribute to the change of the spectral shape of ionising sources due to ageing of HII regions. We derive a positive correlation between ionisation parameter and metallicity at fixed EW(H$α$), in disagreement with previous theoretical works expecting an anti-correlation.
Feedback from photoionisation may dominate on parsec scales in massive star-forming regions. Such feedback may inhibit or enhance the star formation efficiency and sustain or even drive turbulence in the parent molecular cloud. Photoionisation feedback may also provide a mechanism for the rapid expulsion of gas from young clusters' potentials, often invoked as the main cause of 'infant mortality'. There is currently no agreement, however, with regards to the efficiency of this process and how environment may affect the direction (positive or negative) in which it proceeds. The study of the pho…
Three non-equilibrium photoionisation algorithms for hydrodynamical grid-based simulation codes are compared in terms of accuracy, timestepping criteria, and parallel scaling. Explicit methods with first-order time accuracy for photon conservation must use very restrictive timestep criteria to accurately track R-type ionisation fronts. A second-order accurate algorithm is described which, although it requires more work per step, allows much longer timesteps and is consequently more efficient. Implicit methods allow ionisation fronts to cross many grid cells per timestep while maintaining photo…
MaNGA (Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory) is a SDSS-IV survey that will obtain spatially resolved spectroscopy from 3600 Å to 10300 Å for a representative sample of over 10000 nearby galaxies. In this paper we present the analysis of nebular emission line properties in 14 galaxies obtained with P-MaNGA, a prototype of the MaNGA instrument. Using spatially resolved diagnostic diagrams we find extended star formation in galaxies that are centrally dominated by Seyfert/LINER-like emission, which illustrates that galaxy characterisations based on single fibre spectra are necessar…
Emission and absorption lines from elements heavier than helium (metals) represent one of our strongest probes of galaxy formation physics across nearly all redshifts accessible to observations. The vast majority of simulations that model these metal lines often assume either collisional or photoionisation equilibrium, or a combination of the two. For the few simulations that have relaxed these assumptions, a redshift-dependent meta-galactic UV background or fixed spectrum is often used in the non-equilibrium photoionisation calculation, which is unlikely to be accurate in the interstellar med…
We present results of Gemini spectroscopy and Hubble Space Telescope imaging of the 3C~381 radio galaxy. Possible ionising mechanisms for the Extended Emission-Line Region were studied through state-of-the-art diagnostic analysis employing line-ratios. Photoionisation from the central engine as well as mixed-medium photoionisation models fail in reproducing both the strengths and the behaviour of the highest-excitation lines, such as [NeV]3424, HeII, and [OIII}]5007, which are measured at very large distances from the AGN. Shock-ionisation models provide a better fit to the observation. Expand…
The prevalence of outflow and feedback signatures in active galactic nuclei (AGN) is a major unresolved question which large integral field unit (IFU) surveys now allow to address. In this paper, we present a kinematic analysis of the ionised gas in 2778 galaxies at z $\sim$ 0.05 observed by SDSS-IV MaNGA. Specifically, we measure the kinematics of the [OIII] λ5007Å emission line in each spatial element and fit multiple Gaussian components to account for possible non-gravitational motions of gas. Comparing the kinematics of the ionised gas between 308 MaNGA-selected AGN that have been previous…

A new collection of photodissociation and photoionisation cross sections for 102 atoms and molecules of astrochemical interest has been assembled, along with a brief review of the basic processes involved. These have been used to calculate dissociation and ionisation rates, with uncertainties, in a standard ultraviolet interstellar radiation field (ISRF) and wavelength-dependent radiation fields. The new ISRF rates generally agree within 30% with our previous compilations, with a few notable exceptions. The reduction of rates in shielded regions was calculated as a function of dust, molecular …
Outflows in active galactic nuclei (AGN) are considered a promising candidate for driving AGN feedback at large scales. However, without information on the density of these outflows, we cannot determine how much kinetic power they are imparting to the surrounding medium. Monitoring the response of the ionisation state of the absorbing outflows to changes in the ionising continuum provides the recombination timescale of the outflow, which is a function of the electron density. We have developed a new self-consistent time-dependent photoionisation model, TPHO, enabling the measurement of the pla…
We study and compare different examples of stellar evolutionary synthesis input parameters used to produce photoionisation model grids using the MAPPINGS V modelling code. The aim of this study is to (a) explore the systematic effects of various stellar evolutionary synthesis model parameters on the interpretation of emission lines in optical strong-line diagnostic diagrams, (b) characterise the combination of parameters able to reproduce the spread of local galaxies located in the star-forming region in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and (c) investigate the emission from extremely metal-poor g…
We have discovered a population of 29 outlying H$α$ emitters which appear like unresolved blobs in the DR14 data release of the SDSS IV MaNGA integral field unit survey. They do not have any underlying optical continuum emission in deep imaging from the DECam Legacy Survey or Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey. These blobs either lie away from the disc of the host galaxy in the MaNGA IFU and/or have velocities which are different from the velocity map of the host galaxy. Interestingly, all of them show photoionisation due to star formation. These galaxies have very high specific star formation rates c…
We present a new set of analytic models for the expansion of HII regions powered by UV photoionisation from massive stars and compare them to a new suite of radiative magnetohydrodynamic simulations of turbulent, self-gravitating molecular clouds. To perform these simulations we use the Eulerian adaptive mesh magnetohydrodynamics code RAMSES-RT, including radiative transfer of UV photons. Our analytic models successfully predict the global behaviour of the HII region provided the density and velocity structure of the cloud is known. We give estimates for the HII region behaviour based on a pow…
We study the spatially resolved excitation properties of the ionised gas in a sample of 646 galaxies using integral field spectroscopy data from SDSS-IV MaNGA. Making use of Baldwin-Philips-Terlevich diagnostic diagrams we demonstrate the ubiquitous presence of extended (kpc scale) low ionisation emission-line regions (LIERs) in both star forming and quiescent galaxies. In star forming galaxies LIER emission can be associated with diffuse ionised gas, most evident as extra-planar emission in edge-on systems. In addition, we identify two main classes of galaxies displaying LIER emission: `centr…
We compare the three-dimensional gas temperature distributions obtained by a dedicated radiative transfer and photoionisation code, MOCASSIN, against those obtained by the recently-developed Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) plus ionisation code iVINE for snapshots of an hydrodynamical simulation of a turbulent interstellar medium (ISM) irradiated by a nearby O star. Our tests demonstrate that the global ionisation properties of the region are correctly reproduced by iVINE, hence validating further application of this code to the study of feedback in star forming regions. However we highligh…
Active galactic nuclei (AGN) in dwarf galaxies could possibly host the relics of those early Universe seed black holes that did not grow into supermassive black holes. Using MaNGA integral field unit (IFU) spectroscopy we have found a sample of 37 dwarf galaxies that show AGN ionisation signatures in spatially-resolved emission line diagnostic diagrams. The AGN signatures are largely missed by integrated emission line diagnostics for 23 of them. The bolometric luminosity of these 23 new AGN candidates is $\lesssim 10^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$, fainter than that of single-fiber SDSS AGN, X-ray AGN, an…
With the goal of a thorough investigation of the ionised gas and its origin in early-type group-dominant galaxies, we present archival MUSE data for 18 galaxies from the Complete Local-Volume Groups Sample (CLoGS). This data allowed us to study the spatially-resolved warm gas properties, including the morphology of the ionised gas, EW(H$α$) and kinematics as well as the gas-phase metallicity (12 + log(O/H)) of these systems. In order to distinguish between different ionisation mechanisms, we used the emission-line ratios [O III]/H$β$ and [N II]/H$α$ in the BPT diagrams and EW(H$α$). We find th…

Red Geysers are quiescent galaxies with galactic scale ionised outflows, likely due to low-luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). We used Gemini GMOS-IFU observations of the inner $\sim 1.0-3.0$ kpc of nine Red Geysers selected from the MaNGA survey to study the gas ionisation and kinematics. The emission-line ratios suggest the presence of Seyfert/LINER (Low Ionisation Nuclear Emission Region) nuclei in all sources. Two galaxies show H$α$ equivalent width (H$α$ EW) larger than 3 Å(indicative of AGN ionisation) within an aperture 2.5 arcsec of diameter ($1.3-3.7$ kpc at the distance of galax…
Broad-line regions (BLR) are one of the main components that constitute the phenomenological picture of active galaxies near the vicinity of the accreting supermassive black holes. Both theoretical and observational studies have shown that the BLR is made of dense, ionized gas clumps that have a strong virialized distribution at parsec-scale distances from the nuclei. Using a theoretically motivated photoionized gas model, I constrain the ionisation parameter (U) and cloud density (n$_{\rm{H}}$) as a function of the strength of the FeII emission. Recent observations in the reverberation mappin…
We present an analysis of STIS/HST optical spectra of a sample of ten Seyfert galaxies aimed at studying the structure and physical properties of the coronal-line region (CLR). The high-spatial resolution provided by STIS allowed us to resolve the CLR and obtain key information about the kinematics of the coronal-line gas, measure directly its spatial scale, and study the mechanisms that drive the high-ionisation lines. We find CLRs extending from just a few parsecs (~10 pc) up to 230 pc in radius, consistent with the bulk of the coronal lines (CLs) originating between the BLR and NLR, and ext…
We employ MUSE/VLT data to study the ionised and highly ionised gas phases of the feedback in Circinus, the closest Seyfert 2 galaxy to us. The analysis of the nebular emission allowed us to detect a remarkable high-ionisation gas outflow beyond the galaxy plane traced by the coronal lines [Fe VII] $λ$6089 and [Fe X] $λ$6374, extending up to 700 pc and 350 pc NW from the nucleus, respectively. This is the first time that the [Fe X] emission is observed at such distances from the central engine in an AGN. The gas kinematics reveals expanding gas shells with velocities of a few hundred km s$^{-1…
We demonstrate a new technique for determining the physical conditions of the broad line emitting gas in quasars, using near-infrared hydrogen emission lines. Unlike higher ionisation species, hydrogen is an efficient line emitter for a very wide range of photoionisation conditions, and the observed line ratios depend strongly on the density and photoionisation state of the gas present. A locally optimally emitting cloud model of the broad emission line region was compared to measured emission lines of four nearby ($z\approx0.2$) quasars that have optical and NIR spectra of sufficient signal-t…
We have used the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) to study the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of a z = 2.92 radio galaxy, MRC 0943-242 by parametrising its emitting and absorbing gas. In both Ly$α$ $λ$1216 and He II $λ$1640 lines, we observe emission with velocity shifts of $Δv \simeq-1000$ km s$^{-1}$ from the systemic redshift of the galaxy. These blueshifted components represent kinematically perturbed gas that is aligned with the radio axis, which we interpret as jet-driven outflows. Three of the four known Ly$α$ absorbers are detected at the same velocity as C IV $λ\lambda1548,1551$ …
Exploring the hardness of the ionising radiation with the infrared softness diagram. I. Similar effective temperature scales for starbursts and (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies
Using spatially resolved spectroscopy from SDSS-IV MaNGA we have demonstrated that low ionisation emission line regions (LIERs) in local galaxies result from photoionisation by hot evolved stars, not active galactic nuclei. LIERs are ubiquitous in both quiescent galaxies and in the central regions of galaxies where star formation takes place at larger radii. We refer to these two classes of galaxies as extended LIER (eLIER) and central LIER (cLIER) galaxies respectively. cLIERs are late type galaxies located around the green valley, in the transition region between the star formation main sequ…

We investigate the photoionised X-ray emission line regions (ELRs) within the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068, to determine if there are any characteristic changes between observations taken fourteen years apart. We compare XMM-Newton observations collected in 2000 and 2014, simultaneously fitting the reflection grating spectrometer (RGS) and EPIC-pn spectra of each epoch, for the first time, with the photoionisation model, PION, in SPEX. We find that four PION components are required to fit the majority of the emission lines in the spectra of NGC 1068, with $\log ξ=1-4$, $\log N_H>26 m^{-2}$, and $…
The extraction of chemical abundances of ionised nebulae from a limited spectral range is usually hampered by the lack of emission lines corresponding to certain ionic stages. So far, the missing emission lines have been accounted for by the ionisation correction factors (ICFs), constructed under simplistic assumptions like spherical geometry by using 1-D photoionisation modelling. In this contribution we discuss the results (Goncalves et al. 2011, in prep.) of our ongoing project to find a new set of ICFs to determine total abundances of N, O, Ne, Ar, and S, with optical spectra, in the case …
We present spectroscopic observations of the type 2 quasar SDSS J11311.05+162739.5 (Q1131+16 hereafter; z=0.1732), which has the richest spectrum of forbidden high ionisation lines (FHIL, e.g. [Fe \textsc{vii}], [Fe \textsc{x}], [Fe \textsc{xi}] and [Ne \textsc{v}]) yet reported for an AGN, as well as unusually strong [O \textsc{iii}]$λ$4363 emission. The study of this object provides a rare opportunity to investigate the physical conditions and kinematics of the region(s) emitting the FHILs. By comparison with photoionisation model results, we find that the FHIL region has high densities (10$…
We use Cloudy photoionisation models to predict the flux profiles for optical/IR emission lines that trace the footprint of X-ray gas, such as [Fe X] 6375A and [Si X] 1.43$μ$m. These are a subset of coronal lines, from ions with ionisation potential $\geq$ that of O VII, i.e., 138eV. The footprint lines are formed in gas over the same range in ionisation state as the H and He-like of O and Ne ions, which are also the source of X-ray emission lines. The footprint lines can be detected with optical and IR telescopes, such as the Hubble Space Telescope/STIS and James Webb Space Telescope/NIRSpec,…
High ionisation lines in the soft X-ray band are generally associated to either interstellar hot gas along the line of sight or to photoionised gas intrinsic to the source. In the low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1820-30, the nature of these lines is not well understood. We characterised the ionised gas present along the line of sight towards the source producing the X-ray absorption lines of Mg XI, Ne IX, Fe XVII, O VII, and O VIII. We analysed all the observations available for this source in the XMM-Newton and Chandra archives, taken with the RGS, HETG, and LETG spectrometers. The high-resolution g…

We investigated the interstellar medium (ISM) properties in the central regions of nearby Seyfert galaxies characterised by prominent conical or bi-conical outflows belonging to the MAGNUM survey by exploiting the unprecedented sensitivity, spatial and spectral coverage of the integral field spectrograph MUSE at the Very Large Telescope. We developed a novel approach based on the gas and stars kinematics to disentangle high-velocity gas in the outflow from gas in the disc to spatially track the differences in their ISM properties. This allowed us to reveal the presence of an ionisation structu…
The shape of the ionising spectra of galaxies is a key ingredient to reveal their physical properties and to our understanding of the ionising background radiation. A long-standing unsolved problem is the presence of HeII nebular emission in many low-metallicity star-forming galaxies. This emission requires ionising photons with energy >54 eV, which are not produced in sufficient amounts by normal stellar populations. To examine if high mass X-ray binaries and ultra-luminous X-ray sources (HMXB/ULX) can explain the observed HeII nebular emission and how their presence alters other emission lin…
We present a calculation of the atomic and low-ionisation emission line spectra of photoevaporating protoplanetary discs. Line luminosities and profiles are obtained from detailed photoionisation calculations of the disc and wind structures surrounding young active solar-type stars. The disc and wind density and velocity fields were obtained from the recently developed radiation-hydrodynamic models of Owen et al., that include stellar X-ray and EUV irradiation of protoplanetary discs at various stages of clearing, from primordial sources to inner hole sources of various hole sizes. Our models …
Aims. We aim to investigate and characterise the photoionised X-ray emission line regions within NGC 7469. Methods. We apply the photoionisation model, PION, within the spectral fitting code SPEX to analyse the 640 ks RGS spectrum of NGC 7469 gathered during an XMM-Newton observing campaign in 2015. Results. We find the emission line region in NGC 7469 to be multiphased, consisting of two narrow components with ionisation parameters of $\log ξ= 0.4$ and 1.6. A third, broad emission component, with a broadening velocity of $v_b \sim 1400$ km s\textsuperscript{-1} and an outflow velocity of $v_{…
We study radial profiles in H$α$ equivalent width and specific star formation rate (sSFR) derived from spatially-resolved SDSS-IV MaNGA spectroscopy to gain insight on the physical mechanisms that suppress star formation and determine a galaxy's location in the SFR-$\rm M_\star$ diagram. Even within the star-forming `main sequence', the measured sSFR decreases with stellar mass, both in an integrated and spatially-resolved sense. Flat sSFR radial profiles are observed for $\rm log(M_\star/ M_\odot) < 10.5$, while star-forming galaxies of higher mass show a significant decrease in sSFR in the c…
The characterisation of galaxy-scale outflows in terms of their multi-phase nature, amount, and effects of flowing material is crucial to place constraints on models of galaxy evolution. This study can proceed only with the detailed investigation of individual targets. We present a spatially resolved spectroscopic optical data analysis of Mkn 848, a complex system consisting of two merging galaxies at z~0.04 that are separated 7.5 kpc (projected distance). Motivated by the presence of a multi-phase outflow in the north-west system revealed by the SDSS integrated spectrum, we analysed the publi…

We present 3D spectroscopic observations of a sample of 10 nearby galaxies with the AAOmega-SPIRAL integral field spectrograph on the 3.9m AAT, the largest survey of its kind to date. The double-beam spectrograph provides spatial maps in a range of spectral diagnostics: [OIII] 5007, H-beta, Mg-b, NaD, [OI] 6300, H-alpha, [NII] 6583, [SII] 6717, 6731. All of the objects in our survey show extensive wind-driven filamentation along the minor axis, in addition to large-scale disk rotation. Our sample can be divided into either starburst galaxies or active galactic nuclei (AGN), although some objec…
Galaxy surveys targeting emission lines are characterising the evolution of star-forming galaxies, but there is still little theoretical progress in modelling their physical properties. We predict nebular emission from star-forming galaxies within a cosmological galaxy formation model. Emission lines are computed by combining the semi-analytical model \sag\ with the photoionisation code \mapp. We characterise the interstellar medium (ISM) of galaxies by relating the ionisation parameter of gas in galaxies to their cold gas metallicity, obtaining a reasonable agreement with the observed \ha, \o…
The HII regions are all studied employing the same general prescriptions, despite the possible influence of their environment in their star formation processes. Through the analysis of two samples of 725 inner and 671 outer disk HII region observed spectra, we explore possible systematic differences between their ionising clusters physical properties (metallicity, mass, and age), comparing observations and predictions by photoionisation models. Higher metallicities are confirmed for inner regions, although there are important discrepancies between the diagnostic diagrams. Calibrations based on…

Our objective is to investigate the physical properties of the ionised gas of the low-metallicity dwarf galaxy, IC 10, at various spatial scales: from individual HII regions to the entire galaxy scale and examine whether diagnostics for integrated measurements introduce bias in the results. We modeled the ionised gas combining the mid- and far-infrared fine-structure cooling lines observed with Spitzer/IRS and Herschel/PACS, with the photoionisation code Cloudy. The free parameters of the models are the age of the stellar cluster, the density and the ionisation parameter of the ionised gas as …

The abundance ratios of manganese to iron in late-type stars across a wide metallicity range place tight constraints on the astrophysical production sites of Fe-group elements. In this work, we investigate the chemical evolution of Mn in the Milky Way galaxy using high-resolution spectroscopic observations of stars in the Galactic disc and halo stars, as well as a sample of globular clusters. Our analysis shows that local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) leads to a strong imbalance in the ionisation equilibrium of Mn I and Mn II lines. Mn I produces systematically (up to 0.6 dex) lower abundanc…
Understanding when, how and where star formation ceased (quenching) within galaxies is still a critical subject in galaxy evolution studies. Taking advantage of the new methodology developed by Quai et al. (2018) to select recently quenched galaxies, we explored the spatial information provided by IFU data to get critical insights on this process. In particular, we analyse 10 SDSS-IV MaNGA galaxies that show regions with low [O III]/Hα compatible with a recent quenching of the star formation. We compare the properties of these 10 galaxies with those of a control sample of 8 MaNGA galaxies with…
AGN-driven outflows are now routinely used in models of galaxy evolution as a feedback mechanism, however many of their properties remain highly uncertain. Perhaps the greatest source of uncertainty is the electron density of the outflowing gas, which directly affects derived kinetic powers and mass outflow rates. Here we present spatially-resolved, wide spectral-coverage Xshooter observations of the nearby active galaxy IC 5063 (z=0.001131), which shows clear signatures of outflows being driven by shocks induced by a radio jet interacting with the ISM. For the first time, we use the higher cr…
We investigate electron temperature (Te) and gas-phase oxygen abundance (Z_Te) measurements for galaxies in the local Universe (z < 0.25). Our sample comprises spectra from a total of 264 emission-line systems, ranging from individual HII regions to whole galaxies, including 23 composite HII regions from "star-forming main sequence" galaxies in the MaNGA survey. We utilise 130 of these systems with directly measurable Te(OII) to calibrate a new metallicity-dependent Te(OIII) - Te(OII) relation that provides a better representation of our varied dataset than existing relations from the literatu…
We present a coherent database of spectroscopic observations of far-IR fine-structure lines from the Herschel/PACS archive for a sample of 170 local AGN, plus a comparison sample of 20 starburst galaxies and 43 dwarf galaxies. Published Spitzer/IRS and Herschel/SPIRE line fluxes are included to extend our database to the full 10-600 $μm$ spectral range. The observations are compared to a set of CLOUDY photoionisation models to estimate the above physical quantities through different diagnostic diagrams. We confirm the presence of a stratification of gas density in the emission regions of the g…
We present spectroscopic observations of FIR fine-structure lines of 26 Seyfert galaxies obtained with the Herschel-PACS spectrometer. These observations are complemented by spectroscopy with Spitzer-IRS and Herschel-SPIRE. The ratios of the OIII, NII, SIII and NeV lines have been used to determine electron densities in the ionised gas regions. The CI lines, observed with SPIRE, have been used to measure the densities in the neutral gas, while the OI lines provide a measure of the gas temperature, at densities below 10000 cm-3. Using the OI145/63um and SIII33/18um line ratios we find an anti-c…
Radial metallicity trends provide a key indicator of physical processes such as star formation and radial gas migration within a galaxy. Large IFU surveys allow for detailed studies of these radial variations, with recent observations detecting central dips in the metallicity, which may trace the impact of various evolutionary processes. However, the origin of these dips has not been conclusively determined, with suggestions that they may be diagnostic dependent. In this paper, we use the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey to investigate whether the observed dips represent genuine decreases in the central m…
