We give four different independence relations on any exponential field. Each is a canonical independence relation on a suitable Abstract Elementary Class of exponential fields, showing that two of these are NSOP$_1$-like and non-simple, a third is stable, and the fourth is the quasiminimal pregeometry of Zilber's exponential fields, previously known to be stable (and uncountably categorical). We also characterise the fourth independence relation in terms of the third, strong independence.
We continue the work on the relations between independence logic and the model-theoretic analysis of independence, generalizing the results of [15] and [16] to the framework of abstract independence relations for an arbitrary AEC. We give a model-theoretic interpretation of the independence atom and characterize under which conditions we can prove a completeness result with respect to the deductive system that axiomatizes independence in team semantics and statistics.
We introduce and study simple and supersimple independence relations in the context of AECs with a monster model. $Theorem$: Let $K$ be an AEC with a monster model. - If $K$ has a simple independence relation, then $K$ does not have the 2-tree property. - If $K$ has a simple independence relation with $(<\aleph_0)$-witness property, then $K$ does not have the tree property. The proof of both facts is done by finding cardinal bounds to classes of small Galois-types over a fixed model that are inconsistent for large subsets. We think this finer way of counting types is an interesting notion in i…
We prove that if $T$ is a complete theory with weak elimination of imaginaries, then there is an explicit bijection between strict independence relations for $T$ and strict independence relations for $T^{\text{eq}}$. We use this observation to show that if $T$ is the theory of the Fraïssé limit of finite metric spaces with integer distances, then $T^{\text{eq}}$ has more than one strict independence relation. This answers a question of Adler [1, Question 1.7].
We study the properties of algebraic independence and pointwise algebraic independence in a class of continuous theories, the randomizations $T^R$ of complete first order theories $T$. If algebraic and definable closure coincide in $T$, then algebraic independence in $T^R$ satisfies extension and has local character with the smallest possible bound, but has neither finite character nor base monotonicity. For arbitrary $T$, pointwise algebraic independence in $T^R$ satisfies extension for countable sets, has finite character, has local character with the smallest possible bound, and satisfies b…
In this paper we apply Ax-Schanuel's Theorem to the ultraproduct of $p$-adic fields in order to get some results towards algebraic independence of $p$-adic exponentials for almost all primes $p$.
The randomization of a complete first order theory $T$ is the complete continuous theory $T^R$ with two sorts, a sort for random elements of models of $T$, and a sort for events in an underlying atomless probability space. We study independence relations and related ternary relations on the randomization of $T$. We show that if $T$ has the exchange property and $\operatorname{acl}=\operatorname{dcl}$, then $T^R$ has a strict independence relation in the home sort, and hence is real rosy. In particular, if $T$ is o-minimal, then $T^R$ is real rosy.
We generalise the result of Tent and Ziegler to homogeneous structures that have a stationary independence relation without the symmetry axiom. We apply our result to prove simplicity of the automorphism group of some asymmetric examples due to Cherlin.
We characterise the existentially closed models of the theory of exponential fields. They do not form an elementary class, but can be studied using positive logic. We find the amalgamation bases and characterise the types over them. We define a notion of independence and show that independent systems of higher dimension can also be amalgamated. We extend some notions from classification theory to positive logic and position the category of existentially closed exponential fields in the stability hierarchy as NSOP$_1$ but TP$_2$.
We study general methods to build forking-like notions in the framework of tame abstract elementary classes (AECs) with amalgamation. We show that whenever such classes are categorical in a high-enough cardinal, they admit a good frame: a forking-like notion for types of singleton elements. $\mathbf{Theorem}$ (Superstability from categoricity) Let $K$ be a $(<κ)$-tame AEC with amalgamation. If $κ= \beth_κ> \text{LS} (K)$ and $K$ is categorical in a $λ> κ$, then: * $K$ is stable in all cardinals $\ge κ$. * $K$ is categorical in $κ$. * There is a type-full good $λ$-frame with underlying class $K…
Boney and Grossberg [BG] proved that every nice AEC has an independence relation. We prove that this relation is unique: In any given AEC, there can exist at most one independence relation that satisfies existence, extension, uniqueness and local character. While doing this, we study more generally properties of independence relations for AECs and also prove a canonicity result for Shelah's good frames. The usual tools of first-order logic (like the finite equivalence relation theorem or the type amalgamation theorem in simple theories) are not available in this context. In addition to the los…

We consider the first-order theory of random variables with the probabilistic independence relation, which concerns statements consisting of random variables, the probabilistic independence symbol, logical operators, and existential and universal quantifiers. Although probabilistic independence is the only non-logical relation included, this theory is surprisingly expressive, and is able to interpret the true first-order arithmetic over natural numbers (and hence is undecidable). We also construct a single-letter characterization of the capacity region for a general class of multiuser coding s…
In this article we further develop the theory of valuation independence and study its relation with classical notions in valuation theory such as immediate and defectless extensions. We use this general theory to settle two open questions regarding vector space defectless extensions of valued fields. Additionally, we provide a characterization of such extensions within various classes of valued fields, extending results of Françoise Delon.
