In this paper, we calibrate the Amati relation (the $E_{\rm p}$-${E}_{\rm iso}$ correlation) of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in a cosmology-independent way. By using Gaussian process to reconstruct the smoothed luminosity distance from the Pantheon type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) sample, we utilize the reconstructed results to calibrate the $E_{\rm p}$-${E}_{\rm iso}$ correlation with the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method and construct a Hubble diagram with the A220 GRB data, in which there are A118 GRB data with the higher qualities appropriate for cosmological purposes. With 98 GRBs at $1.4<z\leq8.2$ in the A118 sample and the observed Hubble data, we obtain $Ω_{\rm m}$=$0.346^{+0.048}_{-0.069}$, $h$=$0.677^{+0.029}_{-0.029}$ for the flat $Λ$CDM model, and $Ω_{\rm m}$=$0.314^{+0.072}_{-0.055}$, $h$=$0.705^{+0.055}_{-0.069}$, $w$=$-1.23^{+0.33}_{-0.64}$ for the flat $w$CDM model, which are consistent with those from fitting the coefficients of the Amati relation and the cosmological parameters simultaneously.
In this paper, we test the consistency of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) Data-set and Supernovae Union2 (SNU2) via the so-called {\it multi-dimensional consistency test} under the assumption that $Λ$CDM model is a potentially correct cosmological model. We find that the probes are inconsistent with $1.456σ$ and $85.47%$ in terms of probability. With this observation, it is concluded that GRBs can be combined with SNU2 to constrain cosmological models.
There are many kinds of models which describe the dynamics of dark energy (DE). Among all we adopt an equation of state (EoS) which varies as a function of time. We adopt Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to constrain the five parameters of our models. As a consequence, we can show the characteristic behavior of DE during the evolution of the universe. We constrain the EoS of DE with use of the avairable data of gamma-ray bursts and type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) concerning the redshift-luminosity distance relations. As a result, we find that DE is quintessence-like in the early time and phantom-li…
A new method to constrain the cosmological equation of state is proposed by using combined samples of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and supernovae (SNeIa). The Chevallier-Polarski-Linder parameterization is adopted for the equation of state in order to find out a realistic approach to achieve the deceleration/acceleration transition phase of dark energy models. As results, we find that GRBs, calibrated by SNeIa, could be, at least, good distance indicators capable of discriminating cosmological models with respect to $Λ$CDM at high redshift. Besides, GRBs+SNeIa combined redshift-distance diagram put…
We report estimates of the cosmological parameters $Ω_m$ and $Ω_Λ$ obtained using supernovae (SNe) associated with gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) at redshifts up to 0.606. Eight high-fidelity GRB-SNe with well-sampled light curves across the peak are used. We correct their peak magnitudes for a luminosity-decline rate relation to turn them into accurate standard candles with dispersion $σ= 0.18$ mag. We also estimate the peculiar velocity of the low-redshift host galaxy of SN 1998bw, using constrained cosmological simulations. In a flat universe, the resulting Hubble diagram leads to best-fit cosmolo…
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected at high redshift can be used to trace the Hubble diagram of the Universe. However, the distance calibration of GRBs is not as easily as that of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). For the calibrating method based on the empirical luminosity correlations, there is an underlying assumption that the correlations should be universal over the whole redshift range. In this paper, we investigate the possible redshift dependence of six luminosity correlations with a completely model-independent deep learning method. We construct a network combining the Recurrent Neural Networ…
Recently, an anisotropic cosmological model was proposed. An arbitrary 1-form, which picks out a privileged axis in the universe, was added to the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker line element. The distance-redshift relation was modified such that it is direction dependent. In this paper, we use the Union2 dataset and 59 high-redshift gamma-ray bursts to give constraints on the anisotropy of the universe. The results show that the magnitude of anisotropy is about $D=-0.044\pm0.018$, and the privileged axis points towards the direction $(l_0,b_0)=(306.1^{\circ}\pm 18.7^{\circ},-18.2^{\circ}\pm 11.2^{…
The connection between long GRBs and supernovae is now well established. I briefly review the evidence in favor of this connection and summarise where we are observationally. I also use a few events to exemplify what should be done and what type of data are needed. I also look at what we can learn from looking at SNe not associated with GRBs and see how GRBs fit into the broad picture of stellar explosions.
In this paper, a parametrization describing the kinematical state of the universe via cosmographic approach is considered, where the minimum input is the assumption of the cosmological principle, i.e. the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric. A distinguished feature is that the result does not depend on any gravity theory and dark energy models. As a result, a series of cosmographic parameters (deceleration parameter $q_0$, jerk parameter $j_0$ and snap parameter $s_0$) are constrained from the cosmic observations which include type Ia supernovae (SN) Union2, the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO)…
During the process of collapse of a massive star, a cavity is generated between the central iron core and an outer stellar envelope. The dynamics of this cavity, filled with plasma and magnetic field of the rapidly rotating proto-magnetar's magnetosphere, is believed to be very relevant in understanding supernovae and gamma-ray bursts. The interactions of the pressurized conducting plasma and the magnetic fields are described by a set of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations with poloidal and toroidal plasma flows not aligned with magnetic fields. A sequence of MHD equilibria in response to the …
Fourth - order gravity theories have received much interest in recent years thanks to their ability to provide an accelerated cosmic expansion in a matter only universe. In these theories, the Lagrangian density of the gravitational field has the form R + f(R), and the explicit choice of the arbitrary function f(R) must meet the local tests of gravity and the constraints from the primordial abundance of the light elements. Two popular classes of f(R) models, which are expected to fulfill all the above requirements, have recently been proposed. However, neither of these models has ever been qua…
In the context of cosmography approach and using the data of Hubble diagram for supernovae, quasars and gamma-ray bursts, we study some DE parametrizations and also the concordance $Λ$CDM universe. Using the different combinations of data sample including ({\it i}) supernovae (Pantheon), ({\it ii}) Pantheon + quasars and ({\it iii}) Pantheon + quasars + gamma-ray bursts and applying the minimization of $χ^2$ function of distance modulus of data samples in the context of Markov Chain Monte Carlo method, we first obtain the constrained values of the cosmographic parameters in model independent c…
We propose a new model-independent strategy to calibrate the distance relation in Type Ia supernova (SN) observations and to probe the intrinsic properties of SNe Ia, especially the absolute magnitude $M_B$, basing on strong lensing observations in the upcoming Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) era. The strongly lensed quasars can provide the Time Delay Distances (TDD) and the Angular Diameter Distances (ADD) to the lens galaxies. These absolute distance measurements can model-independently anchor the SNe Ia at cosmological distances. We simulated 55 high-quality lensing systems with $5\%…
Long duration gamma-ray bursts are a rare subclass of stripped-envelope core-collapse supernovae that launch collimated relativistic outflows (jets). All gamma-ray-burst-associated supernovae are spectroscopically of Type Ic with broad lines, but the fraction of broad-lined Type Ic supernovae harboring low-luminosity gamma-ray-burst remains largely unconstrained. Some supernovae should be accompanied by off-axis $γ$-ray burst jets that remain invisible initially, but then emerge as strong radio sources (as the jets decelerate). However, this critical prediction of the jet model for gamma-ray b…

We estimate the distance modulus to long gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) using the Type I Fundamental Plane, a correlation between the spectral peak energy $E_{\rm p}$, the peak luminosity $L_{\rm p}$, and the luminosity time $T_{\rm L}$ ($\equiv E_{\rm iso}/L_{\rm p}$ where $E_{\rm iso}$ is isotropic energy) for small Absolute Deviation from Constant Luminosity(ADCL). The Type I Fundamental Plane of LGRBs is calibrated using 8 LGRBs with redshift $z<1.4$. To avoid any assumption on the cosmological model, we use the distance modulus of 557 Type Ia supernovae (SNeIa) from the Union 2 sample. This cal…
The actual knowledge of the structure and future evolution of our universe is based on the use of cosmological models, which can be tested through the so-called 'probes', namely astrophysical phenomena, objects or structures with peculiar properties that can help to discriminate among different cosmological models. Among all the existing probes, of particular importance are the Supernovae Ia (SNe Ia) and the Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs): the former are considered among the best standard candles so far discovered but suffer from the fact that can be observed until redshift $z=2.26$, while the latter…
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are widely proposed as an effective probe to trace the Hubble diagram of the Universe in high redshift range. However, the calibration of GRBs is not as easy as that of type-Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). Most calibrating methods at present make use one or some of the empirical luminosity correlations, e.g., Amati relation. One of the underlying assumptions of these calibrating methods is that the empirical correlation is universal over all redshifts. In this paper, we check to what extent this assumption holds. Assuming that SNe Ia exactly trace the Hubble diagram of the Univ…
We review recent progress in our understanding of the nature of gamma ray bursts (GRBs) and in particular, of the relationship between short GRBs and long GRBs. The first example of a short GRB is described. The coincidental occurrence of a GRB with a supernova (SN) is explained within the induced gravitational collapse (IGC) paradigm, following the sequence: 1) an initial binary system consists of a compact carbon-oxygen (CO) core star and a neutron star (NS); 2) the CO core explodes as a SN, and part of the SN ejecta accretes onto the NS which reaches its critical mass and collapses to a bla…
To probe the late evolution history of the Universe, we adopt two kinds of optimal basis systems. One of them is constructed by performing the principle component analysis (PCA) and the other is build by taking the multidimensional scaling (MDS) approach. Cosmological observables such as the luminosity distance can be decomposed into these basis systems. These basis are optimized for different kinds of cosmological models that based on different physical assumptions, even for a mixture model of them. Therefore, the so-called feature space that projected from the basis systems is cosmological m…
This is a brief review on the first Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRB) optical identifications - GRB host galaxies and Star Forming Rate (SFR) at relatively small redshifts (z), on the metallicities of GRB hosts, the similarities and differences between GRB hosts and galaxies at larger z, and on the SFR and GRB rate (GRBR) at high z. Evidences of a direct connection between long-duration GRBs and massive stars explosions (like Core-Collapse Super-Novae - CCSNe) are presented. Is there a fast decrease in SFR up to z ~10? Some unsolved problems related to GRBs are discussed: about the high-z GRB host galaxi…
We study the detectability of neutrino bursts from nearby direct black hole-forming collapses (failed supernovae) at Megaton detectors. Due to their high energetics, these bursts could be identified - by the time coincidence of N >= 2 or N >= 3 events within a ~ 1 s time window - from as far as ~ 4-5 Mpc away. This distance encloses several supernova-rich galaxies, so that failed supernova bursts could be detected at a rate of up to one per decade, comparable to the expected rate of the more common, but less energetic, neutron star-forming collapses. Thus, the detection of a failed supernova w…
In this paper, we perform a cosmological model-independent test of the cosmic distance-duality relation (CDDR) in terms of the ratio of angular diameter distance (ADD) $D=D_{\rm A}^{\rm sl}/D_{\rm A}^{\,\rm s}$ from strong gravitational lensing (SGL) and the ratio of luminosity distance (LD) $D^\ast=D_{\rm L}^{\,\rm l}/D_{\rm L}^{\,\rm s}$ obtained from the joint of type Ia supernovae (SNIa) Union2.1 compilation and the latest Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) data, where the superscripts s and l correspond to the redshifts $z_{\,\rm s}$ and $z_{\,\rm l}$ at the source and lens from SGL samples. The pur…
Sub-arcsecond localization of the repeating fast radio burst FRB 121102 revealed its coincidence with a dwarf host galaxy and a steady (`quiescent') non-thermal radio source. We show that the properties of the host galaxy are consistent with those of long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRB) and hydrogen-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSNe-I). Both LGRBs and SLSNe-I were previously hypothesized to be powered by the electromagnetic spin-down of newly-formed, strongly-magnetized neutron stars with millisecond birth rotation periods (`millisecond magnetars'). This motivates considering a scenario wh…
While the connection between Long Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) and Type Ib/c Supernovae (SNe Ib/c) from stripped stars has been well-established, one key outstanding question is what conditions and factors lead to each kind of explosion in massive stripped stars. One promising line of attack is to investigate what sets apart SNe Ib/c with GRBs from those without GRBs. Here, I briefly present two observational studies that probe the SN properties and the environmental metallicities of SNe Ib/c (specifically broad-lined SNe Ic) with and without GRBs. I present an analysis of expansion velocities base…
The existence of inhomogeneities in the observed Universe modifies the distance-redshift relations thereby affecting the results of cosmological tests in comparison to the ones derived assuming spatially uniform models. By modeling the inhomogeneities through a Zeldovich-Kantowski-Dyer-Roeder (ZKDR) approach which is phenomenologically characterized by a smoothness parameter $α$, we rediscuss the constraints on the cosmic parameters based on Supernovae type Ia and Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) data. The present analysis is restricted to a flat $Λ$CDM model with the reasonable assumption that $Λ$ doe…
Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are millisecond-duration radio transients with an observed dispersion measure ($DM$) greater than the expected Milky Way contribution, which suggests that such events are of extragalactic origin. Although some models have been proposed to explain the physics of the pulse, the mechanism behind the FRBs emission is still unknown. From FRBs data with known host galaxies, the redshift is directly measured and can be combined with estimates of the $DM$ to constrain the cosmological parameters, such as the baryon number density and the Hubble constant. However, the poor know…
We update gamma-ray burst (GRB) luminosity relations among certain spectral and light-curve features with 139 GRBs. The distance modulus of 82 GRBs at $z>1.4$ can be calibrated with the sample at $z\leq1.4$ by using the cubic spline interpolation method from the Union2.1 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) set. We investigate the joint constraints on the Cardassian expansion model and dark energy with 580 Union2.1 SNe Ia sample ($z<1.4$) and 82 calibrated GRBs data ($1.4<z\leq8.2$). In $Λ$CDM, we find that adding 82 high-\emph{z} GRBs to 580 SNe Ia significantly improves the constrain on $Ω_{m}-Ω_Λ$ p…
We present a comparative study of the galactic and small scale environments of gamma-ray bursts (GRB) and core collapse supernovae (CCSN). We use a sample of 34 GRB hosts at z<1.2, and a comparison sample of 58 supernova hosts located within the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey footprint. We fit template spectra to the available photometric data, which span the range 0.45-24 micron, and extract absolute magnitudes, stellar masses and star formation rates from the resulting fits. Our results broadly corroborate previous findings, but offer significant enhancements in spectral coverage an…
The recent $\sim 4 \, σ$ Hubble constant, $H_{0}$, tension is observed between the value of $H_{0}$ from the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia). It is a decade since this tension is excruciating the modern astrophysical community. To shed light on this problem is key to consider probes at intermediate redshifts between SNe Ia and CMB and reduce the uncertainty on $H_0$. Toward these goals, we fill the redshift gap by employing Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) and Quasars (QSOs), reaching $z=9.4$ and $z=7.6$, respectively, combined with Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations (BAO)…
The Italian communities engaged in Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) and supernova research have been using actively the ESO telescopes and have contributed to improve and refine the observing techniques and even to guide the characteristics and performances of the instruments that were developed. Members of these two communities have recently found ground for a close collaboration on the powerful supernovae that underlie some GRBs. I will review the programs that have led to some important discoveries and milestones on thermonuclear and core-collapse supernovae and on GRBs.
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and supernovae (SNe) bring new perspectives to the study of neutron stars and white dwarfs, as well as opening new branches of theoretical physics and astrophysics.
White dwarf-white dwarf (WD-WD) and neutron star-neutron star (NS-NS) mergers may produce Type Ia supernovae and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), respectively. A general problem is how to produce binaries with semi-major axes small enough to in significantly less than the Hubble time (t_H), and thus accommodate the observation that these events closely follow episodes of star formation. I explore the possibility that such systems are not binaries at all, but actually coeval, or dynamical formed, triple systems. The tertiary induces Kozai oscillations in the inner binary, driving it to high eccentricit…
