We introduce a new probe designed to keep track of the quantum information content of a Hawking pair as a function of the distance from the black hole horizon. We compute the entropy content of this Hawking pair probe via a semi-classical replica method that relies on free field Wick contractions and their leading order gravitational back reaction on the black hole horizon area. We find that the information transfer from the black hole state to the Hawking pair is triggered by a geometric transition that, somewhat surprisingly, takes place at a macroscopic distance from the horizon. We relate our computation to recent insights about the role of von Neumann algebras in holography.
In previous work, two of us constructed the holographic dual of a single Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) pair in maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. Here we extend that work in two directions. First, we use a Randall-Sundrum brane to couple the entangled pair to dynamical gravity. Second, we consider the entangled pair in the background of a black hole with the particles on opposite sides of the horizon, turning the EPR pair into a Hawking pair. We give general arguments that ER=EPR should be understood as a duality between two equivalent descriptions of the same physical reality.
The main topic of this talk is the Hawking effect when the black holes in question are undergoing a uniform acceleration. The semiclassical effect of the acceleration is most striking when the Hawking temperature equals the acceleration temperature. Within the usual late-time approximation, the natural black hole vacuum is then equivalent to the asymptotically empty Minkowskian vacuum, and the accelerated black hole becomes semiclassically stable against the familiar thermal evaporation. An important application of this phenomenon is found in the problem of charged black hole pair-creation.
A proposal towards a microscopic understanding of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy for D=4 spacetimes with event horizon is made. Since we will not rely on supersymmetry these spacetimes need not be supersymmetric. Euclidean D-branes which wrap the event horizon's boundary will play an important role. After arguing for a discretization of the Euclidean D-brane worldvolume based on the worldvolume uncertainty relation, we count chainlike excitations on the worldvolume of specific dual Euclidean brane pairs. Without the need for supersymmetry it is shown that one can thus reproduce the D=4 Bekenst…
Within the third quantisation formalism, we find solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt in terms of two sets of modes that can be identified with the Hartle-Hawking's no boundary condition and with the Vilenkin's tunneling boundary condition, respectively. The two sets of modes are related by a Bogolyubov transformation so the no boundary vacuum state turns out to be equivalent to a thermal distribution of tunnelling positive and negative modes representing, in a relative sense, universes and antiuniverses
We first revisit Hartle and Hawking's path integral derivation of Hawking radiation. In the first point of view, we interpret that a particle-antiparticle pair is created and the negative energy antiparticle falls into the black hole. On the other point of view, a particle inside the horizon, or beyond the Einstein-Rosen bridge, tunnels to outside the horizon, where this computation requires the analytic continuation of the time. These two faces of the Hawking radiation process can be extended to not only particles but also fields. As a concrete example, we study the thin-shell tunneling proce…
Hawking's seminal discovery of black hole evaporation was based on the semi-classical, perturbative method. Whether black hole evaporation may result in the loss of information remains undetermined. The solution to this paradox would most likely rely on the knowledge of the end-life of the evaporation, which evidently must be in the non-perturbative regime. Here we reinterpret the Hawking radiation as the tunneling of instantons, which is inherently non-perturbative. For definitiveness, we invoke the picture of shell-anti-shell pair production and show that it is equivalent to that of instanto…
The possibility of an alternative way to formulate the Hawking radiation in a static Schwarzschild spacetime has been explored. To calculate the Hawking radiation, there can be two possible choices of the spacetime wedge pairs in the Krucal-Szekeres coordinates. One is the wedge pair consists of exterior spacetime of a black hole and the exterior spacetime of a white hole, and the other is that of exterior and interior spacetimes of one black hole. The radiation from the former is the Hawking's original one. Though the the latter has been often regarded as the same phenomena as the former, the…
We study the thermodynamic consequences of a recently proposed description for a Schwarzschild black hole based on Euclidean (D3,D3)+(\bar{D3},\bar{D3}) brane pairs described in terms of chain-like excitations. A discrete mass-spectrum of Bekenstein-type is inferred and upon identification of the black hole mass with the chain's energy the leading corrections to both Hawking-temperature and specific heat of the black hole are obtained. The results indicate that for small black holes the evaporation process will be considerably altered.
The current scenario of black hole evaporation holds that the Hawking energy flux $F$ is powered by pair creation at the horizon. However, pair creation produces entanglements, some of which must necessarily be broken before the black hole evaporates completely. That leads to loss of information and violation of unitarity. In this paper, an alternative scenario is suggested that reproduces the essential features of Hawking evaporation, but does not invoke pair creation with its attendant problems. In this "accreting Boulware" scenario, a positive flux $F$ is still an outflux at infinity, but n…
Several approaches to Hawking radiation on Schwarzschild spacetime rely in some way or another on the fact that the Kruskal manifold has two causally disconnected exterior regions. We investigate the Hawking(-Unruh) effect for a real scalar field on the $\RPthree$ geon: an inextendible, globally hyperbolic, space and time orientable eternal black hole spacetime that is locally isometric to Kruskal but contains only one exterior region. The Hartle-Hawking-like vacuum~$\hhvacgeon$, which can be characterized alternatively by the positive frequency properties along the horizons or by the complex …
We investigate the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) corrections to the entropy content and the information flux of black holes, as well as the corrections to the sparsity of the Hawking radiation at the late stages of evaporation. We find that due to these quantum gravity motivated corrections, the entropy flow per particle reduces its value on the approach to the Planck scale due to a better accuracy in counting the number of microstates. We also show that the radiation flow is no longer sparse when the mass of a black hole approaches Planck mass which is not the case for non-GUP calcu…
The condensates of cold atoms at zero temperature in the tunable binary Bose-Einstein condensate system are studied with the Rabi transition between atomic hyperfine states where the system can be represented by a coupled two-field model of gapless excitations and gapped excitations. We set up the configuration of the supersonic and subsonic regimes with the acoustic horizon between them in the elongated two-component Bose-Einstein condensates, trying to mimic Hawking radiations, in particular due to the gapped excitations. The simplified step-like sound speed change is adopted for the subsoni…
We show that in the standard derivation of the holographic dark energy some conceptual issues are present. In particular, the formula used in the literature to avoid black holes is not suitable in expanding universes. A more suitable expression for a holographic motivated dark energy must contain the energy density of the remaining matter content of the universe. However, we show that under some reasonable hypothesis, we can obtain a new physically motivated expression for the holographic dark energy. By considering an appropriate time-dependence of the saturation-level parameter, a de Sitter …
Observing quantum particle creation by black holes (Hawking radiation) in the astrophysical context is, in ordinary situations, hopeless. Nevertheless the Hawking effect, which depends only on kinematical properties of wave propagation in the presence of horizons, is present also in nongravitational contexts, for instance in stationary fluids undergoing supersonic flow. We present results on how to observe the analog Hawking radiation in Bose-Einstein condensates by a direct measurement of the density correlations due to the phonon pairs (Hawking quanta-partner) created by the acoustic horizon…
We introduce quantum field theory on quantum space-times techniques to characterize the quantum vacua as a first step towards studying black hole evaporation in spherical symmetry in loop quantum gravity and compute the Hawking radiation. We use as quantum space time the recently introduced exact solution of the quantum Einstein equations in vacuum with spherical symmetry and consider a spherically symmetric test scalar field propagating on it. The use of loop quantum gravity techniques in the background space-time naturally regularizes the matter content, solving one of the main obstacles to …
We have used the analogy between gravitational systems and non-homogeneous fluid flows to calculate the density-density correlation function of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of an acoustic black hole. The emission of correlated pairs of phonons by Hawking-like process results into a peculiar long-range density correlation. Quantitative estimations of the effect are provided for realistic experimental configurations.
We consider the fate of a small classical object, a "stick", as it falls through the horizon of a large black hole (BH). Classically, the equivalence principle dictates that the stick is affected by small tidal forces, and Hawking's quantum-mechanical model of BH evaporation makes essentially the same prediction. If, on the other hand, the BH horizon is surrounded by a "firewall", the stick will be consumed as it falls through. We have recently extended Hawking's model by taking into account the quantum fluctuations of the geometry and the classical back-reaction of the emitted particles. Here…
For free fields, pair creation in expanding universes is associated with the building up of correlations that lead to nonseparable states, i.e., quantum mechanically entangled ones. For dissipative fields, i.e., fields coupled to an environment, there is a competition between the squeezing of the state and the coupling to the external bath. We compute the final coherence level for dissipative fields that propagate in a two-dimensional de Sitter space, and we characterize the domain in parameter space where the state remains nonseparable. We then apply our analysis to (analogue) Hawking radiati…
We show that D=4 Schwarzschild black holes can arise from a doublet of Euclidean D3-antiD3 pairs embedded in D=10 Lorentzian spacetime. By starting from a D=10 type IIB supergravity description for the D3-antiD3 pairs and wrapping one of them over an external 2-sphere, we derive all vacuum solutions compatible with the symmetry of the problem. Analysing under what condition a Euclidean brane configuration embedded in a Lorentzian spacetime can lead to a time-independent spacetime, enables us to single out the embedded D=4 Schwarzschild spacetime as the unique solution generated by the D3-antiD…
We analyze the possibility of black holes pair creation induced by three dimensional wormholes. Although this spacetime configuration is nowadays hard to suppose, it can be very important in the early universe, when the wormhole spacetime foam representation can be meaningful. We compare our approach with the no-boundary prescription of Hartle-Hawking.
The common interpretation of the Hawking radiation as quantum tunneling has some ambiguity such as coordinate-dependence of tunneling rate and non-invariance of the action under canonical transformations. It is shown that the tunneling process of black holes can be successfully described by Rindler coordinates in analogy with the Schwinger mechanism for pair production. We study the tunneling process of a charged black hole and a BTZ black hole.
We summarize, simplify and extend recent work showing that small deviations from exact thermality in Hawking radiation, first uncovered by Kraus and Wilczek, have the capacity to carry off the maximum information content of a black hole. This goes a considerable way toward resolving a long-standing "information-loss paradox".
The emergence of Hawking radiation from vacuum fluctuations is analyzed in conventional field theories and their energy content is defined through the Aharonov weak value concept. These fluctuations travel in flat space-time and carry transplanckian energies sharply localized on cisplanckian distances. We argue that these features cannot accommodate gravitational nonlinearities. We suggest that the very emission of Hawking photons from tamed vacuum fluctuations requires the existence of an exploding set of massive fields. These considerations corroborate some conjectures of Susskind and may pr…
We investigate an entangled system, which is analogous to a composite system of a black hole and Hawking radiation. If Hawking radiation is well approximated by an outgoing particle generated from pair creation around the black hole, such a pair creation increases the total number of states. There should be a unitary mechanism to reduce the number of states inside the horizon for black hole evaporation. Because the infalling antiparticle has negative energy, as long as the infalling antiparticle finds its partner such that the two particles form a separable state, one can trace out such a zero…
We investigate information flow and Page curves for tripartite systems. We prepare a tripartite system (say, A, B, and C) of a given number of states and calculate information and entropy contents by assuming random states. Initially, every particle was in A (this means a black hole), and as time goes on, particles move to either B (means Hawking radiation) or C (means a broadly defined remnant, including a non-local transport of information, the last burst, an interior large volume, or a bubble universe, etc.). If the final number of states of the remnant is smaller than that of Hawking radia…
The firewall was introduced into black hole evaporation scenarios as a deus ex machina designed to break entanglements and preserve unitarity (Almheiri et.al., 2013). Here we show that the firewall actually exists and does break entanglements, but only in the context of a virtual reality for observers stationed near the horizon, who are following the long-term evolution of the hole. These observers are heated by acceleration radiation at the Unruh temperature and see pair creation at the horizon as a high-energy phenomenon. The objective reality is very different. We argue that Hawking pair cr…
We study the spontaneous pair production, including the Schwinger mechanism and the Hawking radiation, of charged scalar and spinor particles from the near horizon region of (near) extremal charged black holes in the probe field limit. The pair production rate and the absorption cross section, as well as the retarded Green's functions of the probe fields are analytically computed. Moreover, the holographic description dual to the pair production is discussed.

We investigate the spontaneous pair production, including the Schwinger mechanism and the Hawking thermal radiation, of charged scalar particles from the near horizon region of a (near) extremal Reissner-Nordström black hole. The paradigm is equivalent to the dynamics of the charged scalar field in a specific AdS$_2 \times S^2$ spacetime with a constant electric field. Two possible boundary conditions are adopted to explicitly compute the corresponding production rate and absorption cross section. It is shown that the Schwinger production rate can be eventually suppressed by the increasing att…
Inspired by a recent model of Osuga and Page, we propose an explicitly unitary fermionic toy model for transferring information from a black hole to the outgoing radiation. The model treats the unitary evolution as a composition of the Hawking pair creation outside the black hole and of pair annihilation inside the black hole.
These lectures give a pedagogical review of dilaton gravity, Hawking radiation, the black hole information problem, and black hole pair creation. (Lectures presented at the 1994 Trieste Summer School in High Energy Physics and Cosmology)
Hawking's black hole evaporation process suggests that we may need to choose between quantum unitarity and other basic physical principles such as no-signalling, entanglement monogamy, and the equivalence principle. We here provide a quantum model for Hawking pair black hole evaporation within which these principles are all respected. The model does not involve exotic new physics, but rather uses quantum theory and general relativity. The black hole and radiation are in a joint superposition of different energy states at any stage of the evaporation process. In the particular branch where the …
We study phases of equilibrium Hawking radiation in $d$-dimensional holographic CFTs on spatially compact spacetimes with two black holes. In the particular phases chosen the dual $(d+1)$-dimensional bulk solutions describe a variety of black funnels and droplets. In the former the CFT readily conducts heat between the two black holes, but it in the latter such conduction is highly suppressed. While the generic case can be understood in certain extreme limits of parameters on general grounds, we focus on CFTs on specific geometries conformally equivalent to a pair of $d \ge 4$ AdS${}_d$-Schwar…
The vacuum fluctuations that induce the transitions and the thermalisation of a uniformly accelerated two level atom are studied in detail. Their energy content is revealed through the weak measurement formalism of Aharonov et al. It is shown that each time the detector makes a transition it radiates a Minkowski photon. The same analysis is then applied to the conversion of vacuum fluctuations into real quanta in the context of black hole radiation. Initially these fluctuations are located around the light like geodesic that shall generate the horizon and carry zero total energy. However upon …
Following the subtraction procedure for manifolds with boundaries, we calculate by variational methods, the Schwarzschild-de Sitter and the de Sitter space energy difference. By computing the one loop approximation for TT tensors we discover the existence of an unstable mode even for the non-degenerate case. This result seems to be in agreement with the sub-maximal black hole pair creation of Bousso-Hawking. The instability can be eliminated by the boundary reduction method. Implications on a foam-like space are discussed.
The mechanisms which give rise to Hawking radiation are revealed by analyzing in detail pair production in the presence of horizons. In preparation for the black hole problem, three preparatory problems are dwelt with at length: pair production in an external electric field, thermalization of a uniformly accelerated detector and accelerated mirrors. In the light of these examples, the black hole evaporation problem is then presented. The leitmotif is the singular behavior of modes on the horizon which gives rise to a steady rate of production. Special emphasis is put on how each produced parti…
Numerical results for the semi-classical stress-energy tensor outside the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole obtained in the 1980's and 1990's are re- examined in order to better understand the origin of Hawking radiation and the implications for the black hole information paradox. Polynomial fits to the numerical results for the 4D transverse stress are obtained for conformally-coupled spin 0 and spin 1 fields in the Hartle-Hawking and Unruh states and. Analysis of the spin 0 Unruh state results clearly shows that the origin of the Hawking radiation is not pair creation or tunneling very c…
The probability for quantum creation of an inflationary universe with a pair of black holes is computed in a modified gravitational theory. Considering a gravitational action which includes a cosmological constant ($Λ$) in addition to $ αR^{2} $ and $ δR^{-1}$ terms, the probabilities have been evaluated for two different kinds of spatial sections, one accommodating a pair of black holes and the other without black hole. We adopt a technique prescribed by Bousso and Hawking to calculate the above creation probability in a semiclassical approximation with Hartle-Hawking boundary condition. Depe…
We calculate, using our recently proposed semiclassical framework, the quantum state of the Hawking pairs that are produced during the evaporation of a black hole (BH). Our framework adheres to the standard rules of quantum mechanics and incorporates the quantum fluctuations of the collapsing shell spacetime in Hawking's original calculation, while accounting for back-reaction effects. We argue that the negative-energy Hawking modes need to be regularly integrated out; and so these are effectively subsumed by the BH and, as a result, the number of coherent negative-energy modes $N_{coh}$ at an…
Analytic approximations to and numerical results for the semi-classical stress-energy tensor outside the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole obtained in the 1980's and 1990's are re-examined in order to better understand the origin of Hawking radiation and the implications for the black hole information paradox. Polynomial fits to the numerical results for the tangential stress in 4D are obtained for conformally coupled spin 0 and spin 1 fields in the Hartle-Hawking and Unruh quantum states. What these results show is that the origin of the Hawking radiation is not pair creation or tunneling…
Decay of a near-extremal black hole down to the extremal state is studied in the background field approximation to determine the fate of injected matter and Hawking pairs. By examining the behavior of light rays and solutions to the wave equation it is concluded that the singularity at the origin is irrelevant. Furthermore, there is most likely an instability of the event horizon arising from the accumulation of injected matter and Hawking partners there. The possible role of this instability in reconciling the D-brane and black hole pictures of the decay process is discussed.
We explore the connection between the distribution of particles spontaneously produced from an electric field or black hole and the vacuum persistence, twice the imaginary part of the one-loop effective action. Employing the reconstruction conjecture, we find the effective action for the Bose-Einstein or Fermi-Dirac distribution. The Schwinger effect in ${\rm AdS}_2$ is computed via the phase-integral method in the static coordinates. The Hawking radiation and Schwinger effect of a charged black hole is rederived and interpreted via the phase-integral. Finally, we discuss the relation between …
It is sometimes believed that small quantum gravity corrections to the Hawking radiation process can encode the correlations required to solve the black hole information paradox. Recently an inequality on the entanglement entropy of radiation was derived, which showed that such is not the case; one needs {\it order unity} corrections to low energy modes at the horizon to resolve the problem. In this paper we illustrate this inequality by a simple model where the state of the created Hawking pair at each stage is slightly modified by the state of the previous pair. The model can be mapped onto …
We consider the emission of charged scalar particles from a Schwarzschild black hole. It is shown that these particles can interact with each other through pair annihilation, and as a result, produce photons. These photons make a correction to the spectrum of photons that are directly emitted from the black hole. By solving field equations using the WKB approximation, the pair annihilation rate is taken into account for the most probable case, i.e., the first order, and therefore the correction will be of the order of $e^2$. Considering this scenario, we show that most interactions take place …
This work explores the role of thermodynamic fluctuations in the two parameter Hawking radiating black hole configurations. The system is characterized by an ensemble of arbitrary mass and radiation frequency of the black holes. In the due course of the Hawking radiations, we find that the intrinsic geometric description exhibits an intriguing set of exact pair correction functions and global correlation lengths. We investigate the nature of the constant amplitude radiation and find that it's not stable under fluctuations of the mass and frequency. Subsequently, the consideration of the York m…
Recently a set of diffeomorphisms were found which act nontrivially on the Kerr horizon and form a left-right pair of Virasoro algebras. Using the boundary formula for the associated central charge and assuming applicability of the Cardy formula to a putative dual CFT, the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy for the Kerr black hole was reproduced. In this paper, the addition of charge to the black hole is shown to require a minimal modification to this construction which then reproduces the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy for the Kerr-Newman black hole.
Building on a pair of earlier papers, I investigate the various point-wise and averaged energy conditions for the quantum stress-energy tensor corresponding to a conformally-coupled massless scalar field in the in the (1+1)-dimensional Schwarzschild spacetime. Because the stress-energy tensors are analytically known, I can get exact results for the Hartle--Hawking, Boulware, and Unruh vacua. This exactly solvable model serves as a useful sanity check on my (3+1)-dimensional investigations wherein I had to resort to a mixture of analytic approximations and numerical techniques. Key results in (…
This work introduces a synergistic combination of analytical methods and numerical simulations to study the propagation of weak wave-packet modes in an optical medium containing the analog of a pair white-black hole. We apply our tools to analyze several aspects of the evolution, such as (i) the region of the parameter space where the analogy with the Hawking effect is on firm ground and (ii) the influence that ambient thermal noise and detector inefficiencies have on the observability of the Hawking effect. We find that aspects of the Hawking effect that are of quantum origin, such as quantum…
The relative flow of the Schwarzschild vs. the proper time during the classical evolution of a collapsing shell in the Schwarzschild coordinates practically forces us to interpret black hole formation as a highly non-local quantum process in which a shell/anti-shell pair is created within the incipient horizon, thus canceling out the original collapsing shell exactly at the horizon. By studying quantum fields in the black hole background, we reveal similar non-local effects. Among other things, the outgoing member of the Hawking pair very quickly becomes entangled with the black hole geometry …
The pair-production process for a black hole (BH) is discussed within the framework of a recently proposed semiclassical model of BH evaporation. Our emphasis is on how the requirements of unitary evolution and strong subadditivity act to constrain the state of the produced pairs and their entanglement with the already emitted BH radiation. We find that the state of the produced pairs is indeed strongly constrained but that the semiclassical model is consistent with all requirements. We are led to the following picture: Initially, the pairs are produced in a state of nearly maximal entanglemen…
In this short essay we review the arguments showing that black hole entropy is, at least in part, ``entanglement entropy", i.e., missing information contained in correlations between quantum field fluctuations inside and outside the event horizon. Although the entanglement entropy depends upon the matter field content of the theory, it turns out that so does the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy $A/4\hbar G_{ren}$, in precisely the same way, because the effective gravitational constant $G_{ren}$ is renormalized by the very same quantum fluctuations. It appears most satisfactory if the entire gravitat…
