We completely characterize triangulations of the projective plane that have a spanning bipartite quadrangulation subgraph. This is an affirmative answer to a question by Kündgen and Ramamurthi (J Combin Theory Ser B 85, 307--337, 2002) for the projective planar case.
The Wiener index of a connected graph is the sum of the distances between all unordered pairs of vertices. We provide formulae for the minimum Wiener index of simple triangulations and quadrangulations with connectivity at least $c$, and provide the extremal structures, which attain those values. Our main tool is setting upper bounds for the maximum degree in highly connected triangulations and quadrangulations.
Let $ G $ be a connected graph. If $\barσ(v)$ denotes the arithmetic mean of the distances from $v$ to all other vertices of $G$, then the proximity, $π(G)$, of $G$ is defined as the smallest value of $\barσ(v)$ over all vertices $v$ of $G$. We give upper bounds for the proximity of simple triangulations and quadrangulations of given order and connectivity. We also construct simple triangulations and quadrangulations of given order and connectivity that match the upper bounds asymptotically and are likely optimal.
Let $G = (V,E)$ be a plane graph. A face $f$ of $G$ is guarded by an edge $vw \in E$ if at least one vertex from $\{v,w\}$ is on the boundary of $f$. For a planar graph class $\mathcal{G}$ we ask for the minimal number of edges needed to guard all faces of any $n$-vertex graph in $\mathcal{G}$. We prove that $\lfloor n/3 \rfloor$ edges are always sufficient for quadrangulations and give a construction where $\lfloor (n-2)/4 \rfloor$ edges are necessary. For $2$-degenerate quadrangulations we improve this to a tight upper bound of $\lfloor n/4 \rfloor$ edges. We further prove that $\lfloor 2n/7…
Let $M_n$ be a simple triangulation of the sphere $S^2$, drawn uniformly at random from all such triangulations with n vertices. Endow $M_n$ with the uniform probability measure on its vertices. After rescaling graph distance on $V(M_n)$ by $(3/(4n))^{1/4}$, the resulting random measured metric space converges in distribution, in the Gromov-Hausdorff-Prokhorov sense, to the Brownian map. In proving the preceding fact, we introduce a labelling function for the vertices of $M_n$. Under this labelling, distances to a distinguished point are essentially given by vertex labels, with an error given …
We show that every quadrangulation of the sphere can be transformed into a $4$-cycle by deletions of degree-$2$ vertices and by $t$-contractions at degree-$3$ vertices. A $t$-contraction simultaneously contracts all incident edges at a vertex with stable neighbourhood. The operation is mainly used in the field of $t$-perfect graphs. We further show that a non-bipartite quadrangulation of the projective plane can be transformed into an odd wheel by $t$-contractions and deletions of degree-$2$ vertices. We deduce that a quadrangulation of the projective plane is (strongly) $t$-perfect if and onl…
We present bijections for planar maps with boundaries. In particular, we obtain bijections for triangulations and quadrangulations of the sphere with boundaries of prescribed lengths. For triangulations we recover the beautiful factorized formula obtained by Krikun using a (technically involved) generating function approach. The analogous formula for quadrangulations is new. We also obtain a far-reaching generalization for other face-degrees. In fact, all the known enumerative formulas for maps with boundaries are proved bijectively in the present article (and several new formulas are obtained…
The hull perimeter at distance d in a planar map with two marked vertices at distance k from each other is the length of the closed curve separating these two vertices and lying at distance d from the first one (d<k). We study the statistics of hull perimeters in large random planar triangulations and quadrangulations as a function of both k and d. Explicit expressions for the probability density of the hull perimeter at distance d, as well as for the joint probability density of hull perimeters at distances d1 and d2, are obtained in the limit of infinitely large k. We also consider the situa…

In a recent paper [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B}, 113 (2015), pp. 1-17], the authors have extended the concept of quadrangulation of a surface to higher dimension, and showed that every quadrangulation of the $n$-dimensional projective space $P^n$ is at least $(n+2)$-chromatic, unless it is bipartite. They conjectured that for any integers $k\geq 1$ and $n\geq 2k+1$, the Schrijver graph $SG(n,k)$ contains a spanning subgraph which is a quadrangulation of $P^{n-2k}$. The purpose of this paper is to prove the conjecture.
We show that every $4$-chromatic graph on $n$ vertices, with no two vertex-disjoint odd cycles, has an odd cycle of length at most $\tfrac12\,(1+\sqrt{8n-7})$. Let $G$ be a non-bipartite quadrangulation of the projective plane on $n$ vertices. Our result immediately implies that $G$ has edge-width at most $\tfrac12\,(1+\sqrt{8n-7})$, which is sharp for infinitely many values of $n$. We also show that $G$ has face-width (equivalently, contains an odd cycle transversal of cardinality) at most $\tfrac14(1+\sqrt{16 n-15})$, which is a constant away from the optimal; we prove a lower bound of $\sqr…
We unify and extend previous bijections on plane quadrangulations to bipartite and quasibipartite plane maps. Starting from a bipartite plane map with a distinguished edge and two distinguished corners (in the same face or in two different faces), we build a new plane map with a distinguished vertex and two distinguished half-edges directed toward the vertex. The faces of the new map have the same degree as those of the original map, except at the locations of the distinguished corners, where each receives an extra degree. The idea behind this bijection is to build a path from the distinguishe…

In the 7-vertex triangulation of the torus, the 14 triangles can be partitioned as $T_{1} \sqcup T_{2}$, such that each $T_{i}$ represents the lines of a copy of the Fano plane $PG(2, \mathbb{F}_{2})$. We generalize this observation by constructing, for each prime power $q$, a simplicial complex $X_{q}$ with $q^{2} + q + 1$ vertices and $2(q^{2} + q + 1)$ facets consisting of two copies of $PG(2, \mathbb{F}_{q})$. Our construction works for any colored $k$-configuration, defined as a $k$-configuration whose associated bipartite graph $G$ is connected and has a $k$-edge coloring $χ\colon E(G) \…
