We investigate the optimal charging processes for several models of quantum batteries, finding how to maximize the energy stored in a given battery with a finite-time modulation of a set of external fields. We approach the problem using advanced tools of optimal control theory, highlighting the universality of some features of the optimal solutions, for instance the emergence of the well-known Bang-Bang behavior of the time-dependent external fields. The technique presented here is general, and we apply it to specific cases in which the energy is both pumped into the battery by external forces (direct charging) or transferred into it from an external charger (mediated charging). In this article we focus on particular systems that consist of coupled qubits and harmonic oscillators, for which the optimal charging problem can be explicitly solved using a combined analytical-numerical approach based on our optimal control techniques. However, our approach can be applied to more complex setups, thus fostering the study of many-body effects in the charging process.
We study the problem of charging a dissipative one-dimensional $XXX$ spin-chain quantum battery using local magnetic fields in the presence of spin decay. The introduction of quantum feedback control based on homodyne measurement contributes to improve various performance of the quantum battery, such as energy storage, ergotropy, and effective space utilization rate. For the zero temperature environment, there is a set of optimal parameters to ensure that the spin-chain quantum battery can be fully charged and the energy stored in the battery can be fully extracted under the perfect measuremen…

We identify the conditions for local passivity for shared quantum batteries with local Hamiltonians. For locally passive states of two-qubit batteries, we find the relation of their entanglement content with the amount of energy that can be globally extracted from them. Moreover, we obtain that the deficit in work extraction from pure battery states due to the restriction to local unitaries is equal to the amount of optimal global work extractable from the corresponding pure locally passive battery state, for the same entanglement supply. Furthermore, the pure battery state for which globally …
We analyse the charging process of quantum batteries with general harmonic power. To describe the charge efficiency, we introduce the charge saturation and the charging power, and divide the charging mode into the saturated charging mode and the unsaturated charging mode. The relationships between the time-dependent charge saturation and the parameters of general driving field are discussed both analytically and numerically. And according to the Floquet theorem, we give the expressions of time-dependent charge saturation with the quasiengery and the Floquet states of the system. With both the …
The storage and transfer of energy through quantum batteries are key elements in quantum networks. Here, we propose a charger design based on transitionless quantum driving (TQD), which allows for inherent control over the battery charging time, with the speed of charging coming at the cost of the internal energy available to implement the dynamics. Moreover, the TQD-based charger is also shown to be locally stable, which means that the charger can be disconnected from the quantum battery (QB) at any time after the energy transfer to the QB, with no fully energy backflow to the charger. This p…
We consider a classical harmonic driving field as the energy charger for the quantum batteries, which consist of an ensemble of two-level atoms. The maximum stored energy and the final state are derived analytically with the optimal driving frequency. At the end of charging procedure, each of atoms is in the upper state and the batteries are charging completely, which exhibits a substantial improvement over the square-wave charger. Involving the interatomic correlations, we find that the repulsive couplings show an advantage in achieving fully charging with shorter charging period. However, th…

We study the problem of charging a quantum battery in finite time. We demonstrate an analytical optimal protocol for the case of a single qubit. Extending this analysis to an array of N qubits, we demonstrate that an N-fold advantage in power per qubit can be achieved when global operations are permitted. The exemplary analytic argument for this quantum advantage in the charging power is backed up by numerical analysis using optimal control techniques. It is demonstrated that the quantum advantage for power holds when, with cyclic operation in mind, initial and final states are required to be …

We studied the dynamics of entropic uncertainty in Markovian and non-Markovian systems during the charging of open quantum batteries (QBs) mediated by a common dissipation environment. In the non-Markovian regime, the battery is almost fully charged efficiently, and the strong non-Markovian property is beneficial for improving the charging power. In addition, the results show that the energy storage is closely related to the couplings of the charger-reservoir and battery-reservoir; that is, the stronger coupling of a charger-reservoir improves energy storage. In particular, entanglement is req…
Quantum batteries are energy storage devices that satisfy quantum mechanical principles. How to improve the battery's performance such as stored energy and power is a crucial element in the quantum battery. Here, we investigate the charging and discharging dynamics of a three-level counterdiabatic stimulated Raman adiabatic passage quantum battery via shortcuts to adiabaticity, which can compensate for undesired transitions to realize a fast adiabatic evolution through the application of an additional control field to an initial Hamiltonian. The scheme can significantly speed up the charging a…
The energy charging of a quantum battery is analyzed in an open quantum setting, where the interaction between the battery element and the external power source is mediated by an ancilla system (the quantum charger) that acts as a controllable switch. Different implementations are analyzed putting emphasis on the interplay between coherent energy pumping mechanisms and thermalization.

Quantum batteries are quantum mechanical systems with many degrees of freedom which can be used to store energy and that display fast charging. The physics behind fast charging is still unclear. Is this just due to the collective behavior of the underlying interacting many-body system or does it have its roots in the quantum mechanical nature of the system itself? In this work we address these questions by studying three examples of quantum-mechanical many-body batteries with rigorous classical analogs. We find that the answer is model dependent and, even within the same model, depends on the …
A fully operational loss-free quantum battery requires an inherent control over the energy transfer process, with the ability of keeping the energy retained with no leakage. Moreover, it also requires a stable discharge mechanism, which entails that no energy revivals occur as the device starts its energy distribution. Here, we provide a scalable solution for both requirements. To this aim, we propose a general design for a quantum battery based on an {\it{energy current}} (EC) observable quantifying the energy transfer rate to a consumption hub. More specifically, we introduce an instantaneou…

The exactly-solvable Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model has recently received considerable attention in both condensed matter and high energy physics because it describes quantum matter without quasiparticles, while being at the same time the holographic dual of a quantum black hole. In this Letter, we examine SYK-based charging protocols of quantum batteries with N quantum cells. Extensive numerical calculations based on exact diagonalization for N up to 16 strongly suggest that the optimal charging power of our SYK quantum batteries displays a super-extensive scaling with N that stems from genuin…
Quantum batteries are miniature energy storage devices and play a very important role in quantum thermodynamics. In recent years, quantum batteries have been extensively studied, but limited in theoretical level. Here we report the experimental realization of a quantum battery based on superconducting qubits. Our model explores dark and bright states to achieve stable and powerful charging processes, respectively. Our scheme makes use of the quantum adiabatic brachistochrone, which allows us to speed up the {battery ergotropy injection. Due to the inherent interaction of the system with its su…
Motivated by the recent interest in thermodynamics of micro- and mesoscopic quantum systems we study the maximal amount of work that can be reversibly extracted from a quantum system used to store temporarily energy. Guided by the notion of passivity of a quantum state we show that entangling unitary controls extract in general more work than independent ones. In the limit of large number of copies one can reach the thermodynamical bound given by the variational principle for free energy.
The collective and quantum behavior of many-body systems may be harnessed to achieve fast charging of energy storage devices, which have been recently dubbed quantum batteries. In this paper, we present an extensive numerical analysis of energy flow in a quantum battery described by a disordered quantum Ising chain Hamiltonian, whose equilibrium phase diagram presents many-body localized (MBL), Anderson localized (AL), and ergodic phases. We demonstrate that i) the low amount of entanglement of the MBL phase guarantees much better work extraction capabilities than the ergodic phase and ii) int…
We study a quantum battery made out of $N$ non-mutually interacting qubits coupled to a dissipative single electromagnetic field mode in a resonator. We quantify the charging energy, ergotropy, transfer rate, and power of the system, showing that collective enhancements are still present despite of losses, and can even increase with dissipation. Moreover, we observe that a performance deterioration due to dissipation can be reduced by scaling up the battery size. This is useful for experimental realizations when controlling the quality of the resonator and the number of qubits are limiting fac…
