The separation energies of the isospin triplet $^7_Λ\mathrm{He}$, $^7_Λ\mathrm{Li^{*}}$, $^7_Λ$Be, and the $T=1/2$ doublet $^8_Λ$Li, $^8_Λ$Be are investigated within the no-core shell model. Calculations are performed based on a hyperon-nucleon potential derived from chiral effective field theory at next-to-leading order. The potential includes the leading charge-symmetry breaking (CSB) interaction in the $Λ$N channel, whose strength has been fixed to the experimentally known difference of the $Λ$ separation energies of the mirror hypernuclei $^4_Λ\mathrm{He}$ and $^4_Λ\mathrm{H}$. It turns out that the CSB predicted for the $A=7$ systems is small and agrees with the splittings deduced from the empirical binding energies within the experimental uncertainty. In case of the $A=8$ doublet, the computed CSB is somewhat larger than the available experimental value. Using other experimental input for $A=4$ can change this prediction moving it closer to experiment.
Variational calculations for s-shell hypernuclei are performed by explicitly including $Σ$ degrees of freedom. Four sets of YN interactions (SC97d(S), SC97e(S), SC97f(S) and SC89(S)) are used. The bound-state solution of $_Λ^5$He is obtained and a large energy expectation value of the tensor $ΛN-ΣN$ transition part is found. The internal energy of the $^4$He subsystem is strongly affected by the presence of a $Λ$ particle with the strong tensor $ΛN-ΣN$ transition potential.
Recent experiments have presented more accurate data on the $ΛΛ$-binding energies of a few $ΛΛ$- hypernuclei. This is important as the $ΛΛ$- bond energies ($ΔB_{ΛΛ}$) of double-$Λ$ hypernuclei provide a measure of the in-medium strength of the $ΛΛ$ interaction. A mass formula, optimized with the newly available $ΛΛ$ binding energy data, is used to estimate the binding energy and bond energy over a wide range of hypernuclei. The $ΔB_{ΛΛ}$ values calculated with this mass formula are in good agreement with the experimental data, predictions of the quark mean-field (QMF) model and the relativisti…
We include the leading charge symmetry breaking contributions into the hyperon-nucleon interactions derived within chiral effective field theory up to next-to-leading order. Two low energy constants are determined using the experimentally known differences of Lambda separation energies of 4-Lambda-He and 4-Lambda-H. This allows one to predict the Lambda-neutron scattering lengths for the first time based on data. Various sources of uncertainty are discussed.
We present the first ab initio calculations for p-shell single-Lambda hypernuclei. For the solution of the many-baryon problem, we develop two variants of the no-core shell model with explicit $Λ$ and $Σ^+$, $Σ^0$, $Σ^-$ hyperons including $Λ$-$Σ$ conversion, optionally supplemented by a similarity renormalization group transformation to accelerate model-space convergence. In addition to state-of-the-art chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions, we use leading-order chiral hyperon-nucleon interactions and a recent meson-exchange hyperon-nucleon interaction. We validate the approach for s-she…
We utilize the experimentally known difference of the $Λ$ separation energies of the mirror hypernuclei ${^4_Λ\rm He}$ and ${^4_Λ\rm H}$ to constrain the $Λ$-neutron interaction. We include the leading charge-symmetry breaking (CSB) interaction into our hyperon-nucleon interaction derived within chiral effective field theory at next-to-leading order. In particular, we determine the strength of the two arising CSB contact terms by a fit to the differences of the separation energies of these hypernuclei in the $0^+$ and $1^+$ states, respectively. By construction, the resulting interaction descr…
We adopt the Hartree-Fock (HF) method in the proton-neutron-$Λ$ (p-n-$Λ$) formalism and the nucleon-$Λ$ Tamm-Dancoff Approximation (N$Λ$ TDA) to study the energy spectra of medium-mass hypernuclei. The formalism is developed for a potential derived from effective field theories which includes explicitly the 3-body $NNN$ forces plus the $YN$ LO potential. The energy spectra of selected medium-mass hypernuclei are presented and their properties discussed. The present calculation is the first step of a project devoted to {\it ab initio} studies of hypernuclei in medium and heavy mass regions. Thi…
We report on ab-initio NCSM calculations of the A=4 mirror Lambda hypernuclei Lambda-4H and Lambda-4He, using the Bonn-Juelich LO chiral EFT YN potentials plus a CSB Lambda0--Sigma0 mixing vertex. In addition to reproducing rather well the 0+ (g.s.) and 1+ (exc.) binding energies, these four-body calculations demonstrate for the first time that the observed CSB splitting of mirror levels, reaching hundreds of keV for 0+ (g.s.), can be reproduced using realistic theoretical interaction models, although with a non-negligible momentum cutoff dependence. Our results are discussed in relation to re…
The Non-Symmetrized Hyperspherical Harmonics method (NSHH) is introduced in the hypernuclear sector and benchmarked with three different ab-initio methods, namely the Auxiliary Field Diffusion Monte Carlo method, the Faddeev-Yakubovsky approach and the Gaussian Expansion Method. Binding energies and hyperon separation energies of three- to five-body hypernuclei are calculated by employing the two-body $Λ$N component of the phenomenological Bodmer-Usmani potential, and a hyperon-nucleon interaction simulating the scattering phase shifts given by NSC97f. The range of applicability of the NSHH me…

Charge symmetry breaking (CSB) is particularly strong in the A=4 mirror hypernuclei $_Λ^4$H--$_Λ^4$He. Recent four-body no-core shell model calculations that confront this CSB by introducing $Λ$-$Σ^0$ mixing to leading-order chiral effective field theory hyperon-nucleon potentials are reviewed, and a shell-model approach to CSB in p-shell $Λ$ hypernuclei is outlined.
Ongoing progress in understanding and evaluating charge symmetry breaking in $Λ$ hypernuclei is discussed in connection to recent measurements of the $_Λ^{4}{\rm H}(0^+_{\rm g.s.})$ binding energy at MAMI [A1 Collaboration: PRL 114 (2015) 232501] and of the $_Λ^{4}{\rm He}(1^+_{\rm exc})$ excitation energy at J-PARC [E13 Collaboration: PRL 115 (2015) 222501].
The study of hypernuclei in the quark mean-field model are extended from single-$Λ$ hypernuclei to double-$Λ$ hypernuclei as well as $Ξ$ hypernuclei (double strangeness nuclei), with a broken SU(3) symmetry for the quark confinement potential. The strength of the potential for $u,d$ quarks is constrained by the properties of finite nuclei, while the one for $s$ quark is fixed by the single $Λ$-nucleus potential at the nuclear saturation density, which has a slightly different value. Compared to our previous work, we find that the introduction of such symmetry breaking improves efficiently the …
The large charge symmetry breaking (CSB) implied by the $Λ$ binding energy difference $ΔB^{4}_Λ(0^+_{\rm g.s.})\equiv B_Λ(_Λ^4$He)$-$$B_Λ(_Λ^4$H) = 0.35$\pm$0.06 MeV of the $A=4$ mirror hypernuclei ground states, determined from emulsion studies, has defied theoretical attempts to reproduce it in terms of CSB in hyperon masses and in hyperon-nucleon interactions, including one pion exchange arising from $Λ-Σ^0$ mixing. Using a schematic strong-interaction $ΛN\leftrightarrowΣN$ coupling model developed by Akaishi and collaborators for $s$-shell $Λ$ hypernuclei, we revisit the evaluation of CSB …
Charge symmetry breaking (CSB) in the $Λ$-nucleon strong interaction generates a charge dependence of $Λ$ separation energies in mirror hypernuclei, which in the case of the $A=4$ mirror hypernuclei $0^+$ ground states is sizable, $ΔB^{J=0}_Λ\equiv B^{J=0}_Λ (_Λ^4{\rm He}) -B^{J=0}_Λ(_Λ^4{\rm H})=230\pm 90$ keV, and of opposite sign to that induced by the Coulomb repulsion in light hypernuclei. Recent ab-initio calculations of the ($_Λ^4{\rm H},{_Λ^4{\rm He}}$) mirror hypernuclei $0^+_{\rm g.s.}$ and $1^+_{\rm exc}$ levels have demonstrated that a $Λ- Σ^0$ mixing CSB model due to Dalitz and vo…
We describe {\it ab initio} calculations of doubly strange, $S=-2$, $s$-shell hypernuclei ($^4_{ΛΛ}$H, $^5_{ΛΛ}$H, $^5_{ΛΛ}$He and $^6_{ΛΛ}$He) as a first attempt to explore the few-body problem of the {\it full}-coupled channel scheme for these systems. The wave function includes $ΛΛ$, $ΛΣ$, $NΞ$ and $ΣΣ$ channels. Minnesota $NN$, D2$^\prime$ $YN$, and simulated $YY$ potentials based on the Nijmegen hard-core model, are used. Bound state solutions of these systems are obtained. We find that a set of phenomenological $B_8B_8$ interactions among the octet baryons in $S=0, -1$ and -2 sectors, wh…
We employ a feed-forward artificial neural network to extrapolate at large model spaces the results of {\it ab-initio} hypernuclear No-Core Shell Model calculations for the $Λ$ separation energy $B_Λ$ of the lightest hypernuclei, $^3_Λ$H, $^4_Λ$H and $^4_Λ$He, obtained in computationally accessible harmonic oscillator basis spaces using chiral nucleon-nucleon, nucleon-nucleon-nucleon and hyperon-nucleon interactions. The overfitting problem is avoided by enlarging the size of the input dataset and by introducing a Gaussian noise during the training process of the neural network. We find that a…
The $Λ$ separation energies in the mirror hypernuclei ${_Λ^4}{\rm H}-{_Λ^4}{\rm He}$ exhibit large charge symmetry breaking (CSB). Analyzing this CSB within pionless effective field theory while using partially conserved baryon-baryon SU(3) flavor symmetry, we deduce a $Λ-Σ^0$ induced in-medium admixture amplitude ${\cal A}_{I=1}\approx 1.5\%$ in the dominantly isospin $I=0$ $Λ$ hyperon. Our results confirm the free-space value ${\cal A}^{(0)}_{I=1}$ inferred directly within the SU(3) baryon octet by Dalitz and von-Hippel in 1964 and reaffirmed in a recent QCD+QED lattice calculation. Furtherm…
We first determine the Lambda-N S-wave phase shifts so as to reproduce the experimental Lambda separation energies of A=3, 4 Lambda-hypernuclei, and then construct three phase-equivalent Lambda-N potentials with different central repulsion. By the stochastic variational method with correlated Gaussian basis we perform an extensive calculation of ab initio type for the hypernuclei of up to A=6. The binding energies and the sizes of the Lambda-hypernuclei are very insensitive to the type of the phase-equivalent Lambda-N potentials. We use two different Lambda-Lambda potentials which both reprodu…
We explore the systematics of ground-state and excitation energies in singly-strange hypernuclei throughout the helium and lithium isotopic chains --- from $^5_Λ$He to $^{11}_Λ$He and from $^7_Λ$Li to $^{12}_Λ$Li --- in the ab initio no-core shell model with importance truncation. All calculations are based on two- and three-baryon interaction from chiral effective field theory and we employ a similarity renormalization group transformation consistently up to the three-baryon level to improve the model-space convergence. While the absolute energies of hypernuclear states show a systematic vari…
The structure of the T=1 iso-triplet hypernuclei, $^7_Λ$He, $^7_Λ$Li and $^7_Λ$Be within the framework of an $α+Λ+N+N$ four-body cluster model is studied. Interactions between the constituent subunits are determined so as to reproduce reasonably well the observed low-energy properties of the $αN$, $αΛ$, $αNN$ and $αΛN$ subsystems. Furthermore, the two-body $ΛN$ interaction is adjusted so as to reproduce the $0^+$-$1^+$ splitting of $^4_Λ$H. Also a phenomenological $ΛN$ charge symmetry breaking(CSB) interaction is introduced. The $Λ$ binding energy of the ground state in $^7_Λ$He is predicted t…
We propose a new approach to determine the strength of the charge symmetry breaking (CSB) term in the framework of nuclear density functional theory. It is shown that once ab initio calculations are available including accurate description of isospin symmetry breaking terms in medium and heavy nuclei, the mass difference of mirror nuclei as well as the neutron-skin thickness of doubly-closed-shell nuclei can be used to constrain the strength of the CSB interaction with an uncertainty less than $ 6 \, \% $, separately from other isospin symmetry breaking forces. This method opens a new vista of…
A simultaneous description of non-strange nuclei and hypernuclei is provided by a single mass formula inspired by the spin-flavour SU(6) symmetry breaking. This formula is used to estimate the hyperon binding energies of Lambda, double Lambda, Sigma, Cascade and Theta hypernuclei. The results are found to be in good agreement with the available experimental data on 'bound' nuclei and relativistic as well as quark mean field calculations. This mass formula is useful to estimate binding energies over a wide range of masses including the light mass nuclei. It is not applicable for repulsive poten…
Isospin-symmetry breaking is responsible for the energy difference of excited states in mirror nuclei. It also influences the coefficient of the isobaric multiplet mass equation. In the present work, we extensively investigate isospin-symmetry breaking in medium mass nuclei within ab initio frameworks. For this, we employ the ab initio valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group approach, in which charge-symmetry and charge-independence breakings are included in the adopted nuclear force. The mirror energies of sd- and pf- shell nuclei are computed for that matter. The effects of …
The reach of ab initio many-body theories is rapidly extending over the nuclear chart. However, dealing fully with three-nucleon, possibly four-nucleon, interactions makes the solving of the A-body Schrödinger equation particularly cumbersome, if not impossible beyond a certain nuclear mass. Consequently, ab initio calculations of mid-mass nuclei are typically performed on the basis of the normal-ordered two-body (NO2B) approximation that captures dominant effects of three-nucleon forces while effectively working with two-nucleon operators. A powerful idea currently employed to extend ab initi…
We report on a novel ab initio approach for nuclear few- and many-body systems with strangeness. Recently, we developed a relevant no-core shell model technique which we successfully applied in first calculations of lightest $Λ$ hypernuclei. The use of a translationally invariant finite harmonic oscillator basis allows us to employ large model spaces, compared to traditional shell model calculations, and use realistic nucleon-nucleon and nucleon-hyperon interactions (such as those derived from EFT). We discuss formal aspects of the methodology, show first demonstrative results for ${}_Λ^3$H, $…

In this work we present the first steps towards benchmarking isospin symmetry breaking in ab initio nuclear theory for calculations of superallowed Fermi $β$-decay. Using the valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group, we calculate b and c coefficients of the isobaric multiplet mass equation, starting from two different Hamiltonians constructed from chiral effective field theory. We compare results to experimental measurements for all T=1 isobaric analogue triplets of relevance to superallowed $β$-decay for masses A=10 to A=74 and find an overall agreement within approximately 25…
Ab initio many-body methods address closed-shell nuclei up to mass A ~ 130 on the basis of realistic two- and three-nucleon interactions. Several routes to address open-shell nuclei are currently under investigation, including ideas which exploit spontaneous symmetry breaking. Singly open-shell nuclei can be efficiently described via the sole breaking of $U(1)$ gauge symmetry associated with particle number conservation, to account for their superfluid character. The present work formulates and applies Bogoliubov coupled cluster (BCC) theory, which consists of representing the exact ground-sta…
We present the first ab initio calculations for $p$-shell hypernuclei including hyperon-nucleon-nucleon (YNN) contributions induced by a Similarity Renormalization Group transformation of the initial hyperon-nucleon interaction. The transformation including the YNN terms conserves the spectrum of the Hamiltonian while drastically improving model-space convergence of the Importance-Truncated No-Core Shell Model, allowing a precise extraction of binding and excitation energies. Results using a hyperon-nucleon interaction at leading order in chiral effective field theory for lower- to mid-$p$-she…
The Jülich-Bonn group aims at an extensive study of the baryon-baryon ($BB$) interaction involving strange baryons ($Λ$, $Σ$, $Ξ$) within SU(3) chiral effective field theory. An overview of achievements and new developments over the past few years is provided. The topics covered are: 1) Derivation of the leading charge-symmetry breaking (CSB) interaction for the $ΛN$ system and its application in a study of CSB effects in $A$=$4$ $Λ$-hypernuclei. 2) Updated results for the $ΞN$ interaction at NLO and predictions for $Ξ^- p$ correlation functions. 3) Extension of the $ΛN$-$ΣN$ interaction to ne…
An ab-initio calculation scheme for finite nuclei based on self-consistent Green's functions in the Gorkov formalism is developed. It aims at describing properties of doubly-magic and semi-magic nuclei employing state-of-the-art microscopic nuclear interactions and explicitly treating pairing correlations through the breaking of U(1) symmetry associated with particle number conservation. The present paper introduces the formalism, necessary to undertake applications at (self-consistent) second-order using two-nucleon interactions, in a detailed and self-contained fashion. First applications of…
Exact symmetry and symmetry-breaking phenomena play a key role in gaining a better understanding of the physics of many-particle systems, from quarks and atomic nuclei, through molecules and galaxies. In nuclei, exact and dominant symmetries such as rotational invariance, parity, and charge independence have been clearly established. Beyond such symmetries, the nature of nuclear dynamics appears to exhibit a high degree of complexity, and only now, we show the fundamental role of an emergent approximate symmetry in nuclei, the symplectic Sp(3,R) symmetry, as clearly unveiled from ab initio stu…
With both three-nucleon force and continuum coupling included, we have developed a self-consistent {\it ab initio} Gamow shell model within the Gamow Hartree-Fock (GHF) basis obtained by the realistic interaction itself. With the chiral two-nucleon N$^3$LO and three-nucleon N$^2$LO interactions, the Gamow shell model has been applied to the mirror systems of $Z=8$ neutron-rich isotopes and $N=8$ proton-rich isotones, giving good agreements with data in binding energies, dripline positions and excitation spectra. The GHF calculated that the $0d_{3/2}$, $1s_{1/2}$ and $1p_{3/2}$ orbitals are res…
The computational cost of ab initio nuclear structure calculations is rendered particularly acute by the presence of (at least) three-nucleon interactions. This feature becomes especially critical now that many-body methods aim at extending their reach beyond mid-mass nuclei. Consequently, state-of-the-art ab initio calculations are typically performed while approximating three-nucleon interactions in terms of effective, i.e. system-dependent, zero-, one- and two-nucleon operators. While straightforward in doubly closed-shell nuclei, existing approximation methods based on normal-ordering tech…
The existence and stability of atoms rely on the fact that neutrons are more massive than protons. The measured mass difference is only 0.14\% of the average of the two masses. A slightly smaller or larger value would have led to a dramatically different universe. Here, we show that this difference results from the competition between electromagnetic and mass isospin breaking effects. We performed lattice quantum-chromodynamics and quantum-electrodynamics computations with four nondegenerate Wilson fermion flavors and computed the neutron-proton mass-splitting with an accuracy of $300$ kilo-el…
The $A=4$ nuclei, i.e., $^4$H, $^4$He and $^4$Li, establish an interesting isospin $T=1$ isobaric system. $^4$H and $^4$Li are unbound broad resonances, whereas $^4$He is deeply bound in its ground state but unbound in all its excited states. The present situation is that experiments so far have not given consistent data on the resonances. Few-body calculations have well studied the scatterings of the $4N$ systems. In the present work, we provide many-body calculations of the broad resonance structures, in an \textit{ab initio} framework with modern realistic interactions. It occurs that, inde…
Isospin symmetry is explicitly broken in the Standard Model by the non-zero differences of mass and electric charge between the up and down quarks. Both of these corrections are expected to have a comparable size of the order of one percent relatively to hadronic energies. Although these contributions are small, they play a crucial role in hadronic and nuclear physics. In this review we explain how to properly define QCD and QED on a finite and discrete space-time so that isospin corrections to hadronic observables can be computed ab-initio. We then consider the different approaches to compute…
Background: Ab initio many-body methods have been developed over the past ten years to address mid-mass nuclei... As progress in the design of inter-nucleon interactions is made, further efforts must be made to tailor many-body methods. Methods: We formulate a truncated configuration interaction method that consists of diagonalizing the Hamiltonian in a highly truncated subspace of the total N-body Hilbert space. The reduced Hilbert space is generated via the particle-number projected BCS state along with projected seniority-zero two and four quasi-particle excitations. Furthermore, the extent…
Isospin symmetry breaking (ISB) effects in the charge radius difference $ΔR_{\rm ch}$ of mirror nuclei are studied using the test example of ${}^{48}$Ca and ${}^{48}$Ni. This choice allows for a transparent study of ISB contributions since paring and deformation effects, commonly required for the study of mirror nuclei, can be neglected in this specific pair. The connection of $ΔR_{\rm ch}$ with the nuclear Equation of State and the effect of ISB on such a relation are discussed according to an Energy Density Functional approach. We find that nuclear ISB effects may shift the estimated value f…
Background: Ab initio many-body methods whose numerical cost scales polynomially with the number of particles have been developed over the past fifteen years to tackle closed-shell mid-mass nuclei. Open-shell nuclei have been further addressed by implementing variants based on the concept of spontaneous symmetry breaking (and restoration). Purpose: In order to access the spectroscopy of open-shell nuclei more systematically while controlling the numerical cost, we design a novel many-body method that combines the merit of breaking and restoring symmetries with those brought about by low-rank i…
