In this work, we present a quantum algorithm for ground-state energy calculations of periodic solids on error-corrected quantum computers. The algorithm is based on the sparse qubitization approach in second quantization and developed for Bloch and Wannier basis sets. We show that Wannier functions require less computational resources with respect to Bloch functions because: (i) the L$_1$ norm of the Hamiltonian is considerably lower and (ii) the translational symmetry of Wannier functions can be exploited in order to reduce the amount of classical data that must be loaded into the quantum computer. The resource requirements of the quantum algorithm are estimated for periodic solids such as NiO and PdO. These transition metal oxides are industrially relevant for their catalytic properties. We find that ground-state energy estimation of Hamiltonians approximated using 200--900 spin orbitals requires {\it ca.}~$10{}^{10}$--$10^{12}$ T gates and up to $3\cdot10^8$ physical qubits for a physical error rate of $0.1\%$.
For a particle moving in a one-dimensional space an under a periodic external force, its quantization is study using the Hamiltonian (generalized linear momentum quantization) and constant of motion (velocity quantization) approaches. it is shown a great difference on the quantization of both approaches and the ambiguities arisen by using the quantization on the constants of motion.
Our previous work on quantum kinematics and coherent states over finite configuration spaces is extended: the configuration space is, as before, the cyclic group Z_n of arbitrary order n=2,3,..., but a larger group - the non-Abelian dihedral group D_n - is taken as its symmetry group. The corresponding group related coherent states are constructed and their overcompleteness proved. Our approach based on geometric symmetry can be used as a kinematic framework for matrix methods in quantum chemistry of ring molecules.
We derive the semiclassical WKB quantization condition for obtaining the energy band edges of periodic potentials. The derivation is based on an approach which is much simpler than the usual method of interpolating with linear potentials in the regions of the classical turning points. The band structure of several periodic potentials is computed using our semiclassical quantization condition.
We present a semiclassical quantization condition, i.e., quantum-classical correspondence, for steady states of nonadiabatic systems consisting of fast and slow degrees of freedom (DOFs) by extending Gutzwiller's trace formula to a nonadiabatic form. The quantum-classical correspondence indicates that a set of primitive hopping periodic orbits, which are invariant under time evolution in the phase space of the slow DOF, should be quantized. The semiclassical quantization is then applied to a simple nonadiabatic model and accurately reproduces exact quantum energy levels. In addition to the sem…
A numerical matrix methodology is applied to quantum problems with periodic potentials. The procedure consists essentially in replacing the true potential by an alternative one, restricted by an infinite square well, and in expressing the wave functions as finite superpositions of eigenfunctions of the infinite well. A matrix eigenvalue equation then yields the energy levels of the periodic potential within an acceptable accuracy. The methodology has been successfully used to deal with problems based on the well-known Kronig-Penney (KP) model. Besides the original model, these problems are a d…
The three-disk scatterer has served as a paradigm for semiclassical periodic orbit quantization of classical chaotic systems using Gutzwiller's trace formula. It represents an open quantum system, thus leading to spectra of complex eigenenergies. An interesting general feature of open quantum systems described by non-Hermitian operators is the possible existence of exceptional points where not only the complex eigenvalues but also their respective eigenvectors coincide. Using Gutzwiller's periodic orbit theory we show that exceptional points exist in a three-disk scatterer if the system's geom…
We present a possible construction of coherent states on the unit circle as configuration space. Our approach is based on Borel quantizations on S^1 including the Aharonov-Bohm type quantum description. The coherent states are constructed by Perelomov's method as group related coherent states generated by Weyl operators on the quantum phase space Z x S^1. Because of the duality of canonical coordinates and momenta, i.e. the angular variable and the integers, this formulation can also be interpreted as coherent states over an infinite periodic chain. For the construction we use the analogy with…
Long periodic orbits constitute a serious drawback in Gutzwiller's theory of chaotic systems, and then it would be desirable that other classical invariants, not suffering from the same problem, could be used in the quantization of such systems. In this respect, we demonstrate how a suitable dynamical analysis of chaotic quantum spectra unveils the fundamental role played by classical invariant areas related to the stable and unstable manifolds of short periodic orbits.
We present exact, explicit, convergent periodic-orbit expansions for individual energy levels of regular quantum graphs. One simple application is the energy levels of a particle in a piecewise constant potential. Since the classical ray trajectories (including ray splitting) in such systems are strongly chaotic, this result provides the first explicit quantization of a classically chaotic system.
We present an efficient implementation of coupled-cluster Green's function (CCGF) method for simulating photoemission spectra of periodic systems. We formulate the periodic CCGF approach with Brillouin zone sampling in Gaussian basis at the coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) level. To enable CCGF calculations of realistic solids, we propose an active-space self-energy correction scheme by combining CCGF with cheaper many-body perturbation theory (GW) and implement the model order reduction (MOR) frequency interpolation technique. We find that the active-space self-energy correction and…
Quantization is studied from a viewpoint of field extension. If the dynamical fields and their action have a periodicity, the space of wave functions should be algebraically extended `a la Galois, so that it may be consistent with the periodicity. This was pointed out by Y. Nambu three decades ago. Having chosen quantum mechanics (one dimensional field theory), this paper shows that a different Galois extension gives a different quantization scheme. A new scheme of quantization appears when the invariance under Galois group is imposed as a physical state condition. Then, the normalization cond…
A way of construction of semiclassical wave function (SWF) based on the Maslov - Fedoriuk approach is proposed which appears to be appropriate also for systems with chaotic classical limits. Some classical constructions called skeletons are considered. The skeletons are generalizations of Arnolds' tori able to gather chaotic dynamics. SWF's are continued by caustic singularities in the configuration space rather then in the phase space using complex time method. The skeleton formulation provides us with a new algorithm for the semiclassical approximation method which is applied to construct SW…
Topological quantum pumps are topologically equivalent to the quantum Hall state: In these systems, the charge pumped during each pumping cycle is quantized and coincides with the Chern invariant. However, differently from quantum Hall insulators, quantum pumps can exhibit novel phenomena such as the fractional quantization of the charge transport, as a consequence of their distinctive symmetries in parameter space. Here, we report the analogous fractional quantization of the spin transport in a topological spin pump realized in a one-dimensional lattice via a periodically modulated Zeeman fie…
The application of Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) $π-$trains for dynamically decoupling a system from its environment has been extensively studied in a variety of physical systems. When applied to dipolar solids, recent experiments have demonstrated that CPMG pulse trains can generate long-lived spin echoes. While there still remains some controversy as to the origins of these long-lived spin echoes under the CPMG sequence, there is a general agreement that pulse errors during the $π-$pulses are a necessary requirement. In this work, we develop a theory to describe the spin dynamics in dipol…
We consider a spatially periodic (cosine) potential as a model for a crystalline solid that interacts with a harmonically oscillating external electric field. This problem is periodic both in space and time and can be solved analytically using the Kramers-Henneberger co-moving frame. By analyzing the stability of the closely related Mathieu-type differential equation, the electronic band structure can be obtained. We demonstrate that by changing the field intensity, the width of the zero-field band gaps can be drastically modified, including the special case when the external field causes the …
We derive the quantization of magnetic helicity in the solid-state and demonstrate tunable macroscopic quantum tunneling, coherence, and oscillation for a skyrmion spin texture stabilized in frustrated magnets. We also discuss the parameter space for the experimental realization of quantum effects. Typically, for a skyrmion of 5 nm radius, quantum tunneling between two macroscopic states with distinct helicities occurs with an inverse escape rate within seconds below 100 mK, and an energy splitting in the MHz regime. Feasibility of quantum tunneling of an ensemble of magnetic spins inspires ne…
The methods of the high energy semiclassical quantization in the rational polygon billiards used in our earlier papers are generalized to an arbitrary rational multi-connected polygon billiards i.e. to the billiards which is a rational polygon with other rational polygons inside them "rotated" with respect to the "mother" ones by rational angles. The respective procedure is described fully and its most important aspects are discussed. This generalization allows us to apply the method to arbitrary billiards with curved boundaries and with multi-connected areas where the respective semiclassical…
Wave-particle duality, together with the concept of elementary particles, was introduced by de Broglie in terms of intrinsically "periodic phenomena". However, after nearly 90 years, the physical origin of such undulatory mechanics remains unrevealed. We propose a natural realization of the de Broglie "periodic phenomenon" in terms of harmonic vibrational modes associated to space-time periodicities. In this way we find that, similarly to a vibrating string or a particle in a box, the intrinsic recurrence imposed as a constraint to elementary particles represents a fully consistent quantizatio…
We introduce a second quantization scheme based on quasinormal modes, which are the dissipative modes of leaky optical cavities and plasmonic resonators with complex eigenfrequencies. The theory enables the construction of multi-plasmon/photon Fock states for arbitrary three-dimensional dissipative resonators and gives a solid understanding to the limits of phenomenological dissipative Jaynes-Cummings models. In the general case, we show how different quasinormal modes interfere through an off-diagonal mode coupling and demonstrate how these results affect cavity-modified spontaneous emission.…
