Global machine learning force fields (MLFFs), that have the capacity to capture collective many-atom interactions in molecular systems, currently only scale up to a few dozen atoms due a considerable growth of the model complexity with system size. For larger molecules, locality assumptions are typically introduced, with the consequence that non-local interactions are poorly or not at all described, even if those interactions are contained within the reference ab initio data. Here, we approach this challenge and develop an exact iterative parameter-free approach to train global symmetric gradient domain machine learning (sGDML) force fields for systems with up to several hundred atoms, without resorting to any localization of atomic interactions or other potentially uncontrolled approximations. This means that all atomic degrees of freedom remain fully correlated in the global sGDML FF, allowing the accurate description of complex molecules and materials that present phenomena with far-reaching characteristic correlation lengths. We assess the accuracy and efficiency of our MLFFs on a newly developed MD22 benchmark dataset containing molecules from 42 to 370 atoms. The robustness of our approach is demonstrated in nanosecond long path-integral molecular dynamics simulations for the supramolecular complexes in the MD22 dataset.
A quantum system composed of a molecule and an atomic ensemble, confined in a microscopic cavity, is investigated theoretically. The indirect coupling between atoms and the molecule, realized by their interaction with the cavity radiation mode, leads to a coherent mixing of atomic and molecular states, and at strong enough cavity field strengths hybrid atom-molecule-photon polaritons are formed. It is shown for the Na$_2$ molecule that by changing the cavity wavelength and the atomic transition frequency, the potential energy landscape of the polaritonic states and the corresponding spectrum c…
Recent studies illustrate how machine learning (ML) can be used to bypass a core challenge of molecular modeling: the tradeoff between accuracy and computational cost. Here, we assess multiple ML approaches for predicting the atomization energy of organic molecules. Our resulting models learn the difference between low-fidelity, B3LYP, and high-accuracy, G4MP2, atomization energies, and predict the G4MP2 atomization energy to 0.005 eV (mean absolute error) for molecules with less than 9 heavy atoms and 0.012 eV for a small set of molecules with between 10 and 14 heavy atoms. Our two best model…
Partial atomic charges belong to key concepts of computational chemistry. In some cases, however, they fail in describing the electrostatics of molecules. One such example is the $σ$-hole, a region of positive electrostatic potential located on halogens and other atoms. In molecular mechanics, the $σ$-hole is often modeled as a pseudo-atom with a positive partial charge located off the halogen nucleus. Here we address a question, to what extent the pseudo-atom affects partial charges of other atoms in the molecule. To this aim, we have thoroughly analyzed partial charges of over 2300 halogenat…
We show that products of the isotopic substitution reactions in experimentally accessible molecules such as NaK, RbCs, and SrF are cold according to their translational energy below hundreds of mK. For these chemical reactions, molecular products may occupy only the lowest rotational states. We also discuss the possibility of controlling the chemical reactions by the electric field in ultracold mixtures of molecules and atoms with low kinetic energy release, where one of the constituent atoms of colliding molecule is replaced by its isotope. This letter opens new avenues in investigating the b…
Simulating one hundred entangled atoms using projected-interacting full configuration interaction wavefunctions corrected by projected density functionals
We present a non-Hermitian theory of atomic and molecular absorption, which enables computing the absorption spectrum of multi-electron atoms and molecules without using any fitting parameters. We propose a method for optically inducing exceptional points in atomic systems, and show that slight changes in the laser parameters may lead to dramatic changes in the absorption lineshape. We demonstrate these predictions for helium using exact ab-initio electronic-structure data. Finally, we derive a simple formula for the Fano asymmetry factor and evaluate it for a model xenon atom.
Cold molecules provide an excellent platform for quantum information, cold chemistry, and precision measurement. Certain molecules have enhanced sensitivity to beyond Standard Model physics, such as the electron's electric dipole moment ($e$EDM). Molecular ions are easily trappable and are therefore particularly attractive for precision measurements where sensitivity scales with interrogation time. Here, we demonstrate a spin precession measurement with second-scale coherence at the quantum projection noise (QPN) limit with hundreds of trapped molecular ions, chosen for their sensitivity to th…
Alkaline-earth-like transition-metal atoms such as Zn and Cd are promising candidates for precision measurements and quantum many-body physics experiments. Here, we theoretically investigate the properties of diatomic molecules containing these closed-shell atoms. We calculate potential energy curves, permanent electric dipole moments, and spectroscopic constants for molecules consisting of either a Zn or Cd atom interacting with an alkali-metal (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr) or alkaline-earth-metal (Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ra) atom. We use the ab initio electronic structure coupled cluster method with s…
Nondestructive Detection of Polar Molecules via Rydberg Atoms
The requirement for accelerated and quantitatively accurate screening of nuclear magnetic resonance spectra across the small molecules chemical compound space is two-fold: (1) a robust `local' machine learning (ML) strategy capturing the effect of neighbourhood on an atom's `near-sighted' property -- chemical shielding; (2) an accurate reference dataset generated with a state-of-the-art first principles method for training. Herein we report the QM9-NMR dataset comprising isotropic shielding of over 0.8 million C atoms in 134k molecules of the QM9 dataset in gas and five common solvent phases. …
We perform a comprehensive investigation of Förster resonant energy transfer in a room-temperature thermal mixture of ammonia molecules and rubidium Rydberg atoms. Fully state-resolved measurement of the Rydberg-atom populations is achieved by combining millimeter-wave state transfer with state-selective field ionization. This allows aspects of the energy transfer process such as state dependence, ammonia pressure dependence, and dependence on the energy resonance condition to be investigated in detail. Our results pave the way for future quantum experiments combining polar molecules and Rydbe…
We theoretically investigate the properties of highly polar diatomic molecules containing $^2S$-state transition-metal atoms. We calculate potential energy curves, permanent electric dipole moments, spectroscopic constants, and leading long-range dispersion-interaction coefficients for molecules consisting of either a Cu or Ag atom interacting with an alkali-metal (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr) or alkaline-earth-metal (Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ra) atom. We use ab initio electronic structure methods, such as the coupled cluster and configuration interaction ones, with large Gaussian basis sets and small-co…
We present a novel binding mechanism where a neutral Rydberg atom and an atomic ion form a molecular bound state at large internuclear distance. The binding mechanism is based on Stark shifts and level crossings which are induced in the Rydberg atom due to the electric field of the ion. At particular internuclear distances between Rydberg atom and ion, potential wells occur which can hold atom-ion molecular bound states. Apart from the binding mechanism we describe important properties of the long-range atom-ion Rydberg molecule, such as its lifetime and decay paths, its vibrational and rotati…
