We present a strong lensing analysis of the cluster PSZ1 G311.65-18.48, based on Hubble Space Telescope imaging, archival VLT/MUSE spectroscopy, and Chandra X-ray data. This cool-core cluster (z=0.443) lenses the brightest lensed galaxy known, dubbed the "Sunburst Arc" (z=2.3703), a Lyman continuum (LyC) emitting galaxy multiply-imaged 12 times. We identify in this field 14 additional strongly-lensed galaxies to constrain a strong lens model, and report secure spectroscopic redshifts of four. We measure a projected cluster core mass of M(<250 kpc)=2.93+0.01/-0.02x10^14M_sun. The two least-magnified but complete images of the Sunburst Arc's source galaxy are magnified by ~13x, while the LyC clump is magnified by ~4-80x. We present time delay predictions and conclusive evidence that a discrepant clump in the Sunburst Arc, previously claimed to be a transient, is not variable, thus strengthening the hypothesis that it results from an exceptionally high magnification. A source plane reconstruction and analysis of the Sunburst Arc finds its physical size to be 1x2 kpc, and that it is resolved in three distinct directions in the source plane, 0, 40, and 75 degrees (east of North). We place an upper limit of r <~ 50 pc on the source plane size of unresolved clumps, and r<~ 32 pc for the LyC clump. Finally, we report that the Sunburst Arc is likely in a system of two or more galaxies separated by <~6 kpc in projection. Their interaction may drive star formation and could play a role in the mechanism responsible for the leaking LyC radiation.
We present rest-frame ultraviolet and optical spectroscopy of the brightest lensed galaxy yet discovered, at redshift z = 2.4. This source reveals a characteristic, triple-peaked Lyman α profile which has been predicted by various theoretical works but to our knowledge has not been unambiguously observed previously. The feature is well fit by a superposition of two components: a double-peak profile emerging from substantial radiative transfer, and a narrow, central component resulting from directly escaping Lyman α photons; but is poorly fit by either component alone. We demonstrate that the f…
We investigate the strongly lensed (μx10-100) Lyman continuum (LyC) galaxy, dubbed Sunburst, at z=2.37, taking advantage of a new accurate model of the lens. A characterization of the intrinsic (delensed) properties of the galaxy yields a size of ~3 sq.kpc, a luminosity Muv=-20.3,and a stellar mass M~10^9 Msun;16% of the ultraviolet light is located in a 3 Myr old gravitationally-bound young massive star cluster (YMC) with an effective radius of Re~8 pc and a dynamical mass of ~10^7 Msun (similar to the stellar mass), from which LyC radiation is detected (λ< 912A). The inferred outflowing gas …

The Sunburst Arc with JWST: I. Detection of Wolf-Rayet stars injecting nitrogen into a low-metallicity, $z=2.37$ proto-globular cluster leaking ionizing photons
We discovered Bowen emission arising from a strongly lensed (i.e., with magnification factor $μ$>20) source hosted in the Sunburst arc at z=2.37. We claim this source is plausibly a transient stellar object and study the unique ultraviolet lines emerging from it. In particular, narrow ($σ$_v ~ 40 km/s) ionisation lines of Fe fluoresce after being exposed to Lya radiation that pumps selectively their atomic levels. Data from VLT/MUSE, X-Shooter and ESPRESSO observations (the latter placed at the focus of the four UTs) at increasing spectral resolution of R=2500, 11400 and R=70000, respectively,…
We model the strong lensing effect in the galaxy cluster PSZ1 G311.65-18.48 (z=0.443) with an improved version of the hybrid method WSLAP+. We extend the number of constraints by including the position of critical points, which are combined with the classic positional constraints of the lensed galaxies. We pay special attention to a transient candidate source (Tr) previously discovered in the giant Sunburst arc (z=2.37). Our lens model predicts Tr to be within a fraction of an arcsecond from the critical curve, having a larger magnification factor than previously found, but still not large eno…

We present a strong lensing analysis of the galaxy cluster PSZ1 G311.65-18.48 (z=0.443) using multi-band observations with Hubble Space Telescope, complemented with VLT/MUSE spectroscopic data. The MUSE observations provide redshift estimates for the lensed sources and help reducing the mis-identification of the multiple images. Spectroscopic data are also used to measure the inner velocity dispersions of 15 cluster galaxies and calibrate the scaling relations to model the subhalo cluster component. The model is based on 62 multiple images grouped in 17 families belonging to 4 different source…
We present a VLT/X-Shooter spectroscopy of the Lyman continuum (LyC) emitting galaxy 'Ion2' at z=3.2121 and compare it to that of the recently discovered strongly lensed LyC-emitter at z=2.37, known as the 'Sunburst' arc. Three main results emerge from the X-Shooter spectrum: (a) the Lya has three distinct peaks with the central one at the systemic redshift, indicating a ionised tunnel through which both Lya and LyC radiation escape; (b) the large O32 oxygen index ([OIII]4959-5007 / [OII]3727-3729) of 9.18(-1.32/+1.82) is compatible to those measured in local (z~0.4) LyC leakers; (c) there are…
We study light variability of gravitationally magnified high-redshift star clusters induced by a foreground population of microlenses. This arises as the incoherent superposition of light variations from a large number of source stars traversing the random magnification pattern on the source plane. The light curve resembles a scale-invariant, Gaussian process on timescales of years to decades, while exhibits rapid and frequent micro-caustic crossing flares of larger amplitudes on timescales of days to months. For a concrete example, we study a young Lyman-continuum-leaking star cluster recentl…
We report the spectroscopic follow-up of 175 lensed quasar candidates selected using Gaia Data Release 2 observations following Lemon et al. 2019. Systems include 86 confirmed lensed quasars and a further 17 likely lensed quasars based on imaging and/or similar spectra. We also confirm 11 projected quasar pairs and 11 physical quasar pairs, while 25 systems are left as unclassified quasar pairs -- pairs of quasars at the same redshift, which could be either distinct quasars or potential lensed quasars. Especially interesting objects include 8 quadruply imaged quasars of which two have BAL sour…
All cosmological models of structure formation predict the existence of a widespread population of dual supermassive black holes in-spiralling inside their common host galaxy, eventually merging and giving rise to intense gravitational waves. These systems can be identified as dual AGNs at kilo parsec separations, but only very few have been confirmed at z>0.5. The appearance of multiple AGNs at small angular separations can also be due to gravitational lensing of single AGNs, which are themselves very important systems for many astrophysical topics. Here we present a novel technique, dubbed t…
We present spectroscopic confirmation of three new two-image gravitationally lensed quasars, compiled from existing strong lens and X-ray catalogs. Images of HSC J091843.27$-$022007.5 show a red galaxy with two blue point sources at either side, separated by 2.26 arcsec. This system has a source and a lens redshifts $z_s=0.804$ and $z_{\ell}=0.459$, respectively, as obtained by our follow-up spectroscopic data. CXCO J100201.50$+$020330.0 shows two point sources separated by 0.85 arcsec on either side of an early-type galaxy. The follow-up spectroscopic data confirm the fainter quasar has the s…
We report an ultra-bright lensed submillimeter galaxy (SMG) at $z=2.0439$, {\it WISE} J132934.18+224327.3, identified as a result of a full-sky cross-correlation of the {\it AllWISE} and {\it Planck} compact source catalogs aimed to search for bright analogs of the submillimeter galaxy SMMJ2135, the Cosmic Eyelash. Inspection of archival SCUBA-2 observations of the candidates revealed a source with fluxes (S$_{850 μm}$= 130 mJy) consistent with the {\it Planck} measurements. The centroid of the SCUBA-2 source coincides within 1 arcsec with the position of the {\it AllWISE} mid-IR source, and, …
The most distant galaxies known are at z~10-11, observed 400-500 Myr after the Big Bang. The few z~10-11 candidates discovered to date have been exceptionally small- barely resolved, if at all, by the Hubble Space Telescope. Here we present the discovery of SPT0615-JD, a fortuitous z~10 (z_phot=9.9+/-0.6) galaxy candidate stretched into an arc over ~2.5" by the effects of strong gravitational lensing. Discovered in the Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey (RELICS) Hubble Treasury program and companion S-RELICS Spitzer program, this candidate has a lensed H-band magnitude of 25.7+/-0.1 AB mag. W…
We conduct a search for galaxy-scale strong gravitational lens systems in Data Release 4 of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC SSP), consisting of data taken up to the S21A semester. We select 103191 luminous red galaxies from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) sample that have deep multiband imaging from the HSC SSP and use the YattaLens algorithm to automatically identify lens candidates with blue arc-like features. The candidates are visually inspected and graded based on their likelihood of being a lens. We find 8 definite lenses, 28 probable lenses, and 13…
The Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC SSP) is an excellent survey for the search for strong lenses, thanks to its area, image quality and depth. We use three different methods to look for lenses among 43,000 luminous red galaxies from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) sample with photometry from the S16A internal data release of the HSC SSP. The first method is a newly developed algorithm, named YATTALENS, which looks for arc-like features around massive galaxies and then estimates the likelihood of an object being a lens by performing a lens model fit. The secon…
The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) archives constitute a rich dataset of high resolution images to mine for strong gravitational lenses. While many HST programs specifically target strong lenses, they can also be present by coincidence in other HST observations. We aim to identify non-targeted strong gravitational lenses in almost two decades of images from the ESA it Hubble Space Telescope archive (eHST), without any prior selection on the lens properties. We used crowdsourcing on the Hubble Asteroid Hunter (HAH) citizen science project to identify strong lenses, alongside asteroid trails, in p…
The volume of data that will be produced by new-generation surveys requires automatic classification methods to select and analyze sources. Indeed, this is the case for the search for strong gravitational lenses, where the population of the detectable lensed sources is only a very small fraction of the full source population. We apply for the first time a morphological classification method based on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for recognizing strong gravitational lenses in $255$ square degrees of the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS), one of the current-generation optical wide surveys. The CN…
We report an ultra-bright lensed submillimeter galaxy at $z_{spec}=1.4796$, identified as a result of a full-sky cross-correlation of the AllWISE and Planck compact source catalogs aimed to search for bright submillimeter galaxies at $z \sim 1.5-2.8$. APEX/LABOCA observations of the candidate galaxy reveal a source with flux (S$_{870 μm}= 54\pm 8$ mJy). The position of the APEX source coincides with the position of the AllWISE mid-IR source, and with the Einstein ring GAL-CLUS-022058s, observed with the HST. Archival VLT/FORS observations reveal the redshift of this Einstein ring, $z_{spec}=1.…
We present spatially resolved analysis of a lensed galaxy, SDSS1958+5950 at $z = 2.225$, from the Cambridge Sloan Survey of Wide Arcs in the Sky (CASSOWARY). We use our new high resolution imaging data to construct a robust lens model for the galaxy group at $z = 0.214$. We employ the updated lens model to combine the Integral Field Spectrographic observations on two highly distorted images of the lensed target. We adopt a forward-modeling approach to deconvolve the effects of point spread function from the combined source-plane reconstruction. The approach is adapted to the lens model magnifi…
We report the largest sample of candidate strong gravitational lenses belonging to the Survey of Gravitationally-lensed Objects in HSC Imaging for group-to-cluster scale (SuGOHI-c) systems. These candidates are compiled from the S18A data release of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) Survey. We visually inspect $\sim39,500$ galaxy clusters, selected from several catalogs, overlapping with the Wide, Deep, and UltraDeep fields, spanning the cluster redshift range $0.05<z_{cl}<1.38$. We discover 641 candidate lens systems, of which 536 are new. From the full sample, 47 are a…
We propose a new strategy of finding strongly-lensed supernovae (SNe) by monitoring known galaxy-scale strong-lens systems. Strongly lensed SNe are potentially powerful tools for the study of cosmology, galaxy evolution, and stellar populations, but they are extremely rare. By targeting known strongly lensed starforming galaxies, our strategy significantly boosts the detection efficiency for lensed SNe compared to a blind search. As a reference sample, we compile the 128 galaxy-galaxy strong-lens systems from the Sloan Lens ACS Survey (SLACS), the SLACS for the Masses Survey, and the Baryon Os…

Strong lensing in galaxy clusters probes properties of dense cores of dark matter halos in mass, studies the distant universe at flux levels and spatial resolutions otherwise unavailable, and constrains cosmological models independently. The next-generation large scale sky imaging surveys are expected to discover thousands of cluster-scale strong lenses, which would lead to unprecedented opportunities for applying cluster-scale strong lenses to solve astrophysical and cosmological problems. However, the large dataset challenges astronomers to identify and extract strong lensing signals, partic…

We present milliarcsecond (mas) angular resolution observations of the gravitationally lensed radio source MG J0751+2716 (at z=3.2) obtained with global Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) at 1.65 GHz. The background object is highly resolved in the tangential and radial directions, showing evidence of both compact and extended structure across several gravitational arcs that are 200 to 600~mas in size. By identifying compact sub-components in the multiple images, we constrain the mass distribution of the foreground z=0.35 gravitational lens using analytic models for the main deflector [p…
We search for unresolved X-ray emission from lensed sources in the FOV of 11 CLASH clusters with Chandra data. We consider the solid angle in the lens plane corresponding to a magnification $μ>1.5$, that amounts to a total of ~100 arcmin$^2$. Our main goal is to assess the efficiency of massive clusters as cosmic telescopes to explore the faint end of X-ray extragalactic source population. We search for X-ray emission from strongly lensed sources identified in the optical, and perform an untargeted detection of lensed X-ray sources. We detect X-ray emission only in 9 out of 849 lensed/backgrou…
We examine a caustic-straddling arc at $z=0.9397$ in the field of the galaxy cluster MACS J0416.1-2403 ($z=0.397$) using archival multiband HST images and show that its surface brightness exhibits anomalies that can be explained by a single highly magnified star undergoing microlensing. First, we show that the surface brightness pattern is not perfectly symmetric across the cluster critical curve, which is inconsistent with a locally smooth lens model; the location of the candidate star exhibits the most significant asymmetry. Second, our analysis indicates that the asymmetric feature has $\si…
We explore the weak lensing effects by ministructures in the line-of-sight in a quadruply lensed quasar MG0414+0534 that shows an anomaly in the flux-ratios. We find that the observed flux-ratio anomaly can be explained by a presence of either a minifilament or a minivoid in the line-of-sight with a surface mass density of the order of 10^(8-9) h^(-1) solar mass /arcsec^2 without taking into account any subhalos in the lensing galaxy. The astrometric perturbation by a possible minifilament/minivoid is <~ 0.001 arcsec and the amplitudes of convergence perturbations due to these perturbers are ~…
2MASX J04035024-0239275 is a bright red elliptical galaxy at redshift 0.0661 that presents two extended sources at 2\arcsec~to the north-east and 1\arcsec~to the south-west. The sizes and surface brightnesses of the two blue sources are consistent with a gravitationally-lensed background galaxy. In this paper we present MUSE observations of this galaxy from the All-weather MUse Supernova Integral-field Nearby Galaxies (AMUSING) survey, and report the discovery of a background lensed galaxy at redshift 0.1915, together with other 15 background galaxies at redshifts ranging from 0.09 to 0.9, tha…
Using the combined resolving power of the Hubble Space Telescope and gravitational lensing, we resolve star-forming structures in a z~2.5 galaxy on scales much smaller than the usual kiloparsec diffraction limit of HST. SGAS J111020.0+645950.8 is a clumpy, star forming galaxy lensed by the galaxy cluster SDSS J1110+6459 at z = 0.659, with a total magnification ~30x across the entire arc. We use a hybrid parametric/non-parametric strong lensing mass model to compute the deflection and magnification of this giant arc, reconstruct the light distribution of the lensed galaxy in the source plane, a…
We present a sample of 16 likely strong gravitational lenses identified in the VST Optical Imaging of the CDFS and ES1 fields (VOICE survey) using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). We train two different CNNs on composite images produced by superimposing simulated gravitational arcs on real Luminous Red Galaxies observed in VOICE. Specifically, the first CNN is trained on single-band images and more easily identifies systems with large Einstein radii, while the second one, trained on composite RGB images, is more accurate in retrieving systems with smaller Einstein radii. We apply both net…
In this paper we develop a new unsupervised machine learning technique comprised of a feature extractor, a convolutional autoencoder (CAE), and a clustering algorithm consisting of a Bayesian Gaussian mixture model (BGM). We apply this technique to visual band space-based simulated imaging data from the Euclid Space Telescope using data from the Strong Gravitational Lenses Finding Challenge. Our technique promisingly captures a variety of lensing features such as Einstein rings with different radii, distorted arc structures, etc, without using predefined labels. After the clustering process, w…
We investigate the weak lensing effect by line-of-sight structures with a surface mass density of <~10^8 solar mass/arcsec^2 in QSO-galaxy quadruple lens systems. Using high-resolution N-body simulations in warm dark matter (WDM) models and observed four quadruple lenses that show anomalies in the flux ratios, we obtain constraints on the mass of thermal WDM, m_WDM>= 1.3keV(95%CL) assuming that the density of the primary lens is described by a singular isothermal ellipsoid (SIE). The obtained constraint is consistent with those from Lyman-$α$ forests and the number counts of high-redshift gala…
