The ground state cooling of Brillouin scattering optomechanical system is limited by defects in practical sample. In this paper, we propose a new compensatory cooling mechanism for Brillouin scattering optomechanical system with exceptional points (EPs). By using the EPs both in optical and mechanical modes, the limited cooling process is compensated effectively. The dual-EPs system, which is discovered in this work for the first time, can be induced by two defects with specific relative angles and has function of not only actively manipulating the coupling strength of optical modes but also the Brillouin phonon modes. Our results provide new tools to manipulate the optomechanical interaction in multi-mode systems and open the possibility of quantum state transfer and quantum interface protocols based on phonon cooling in quantum applications.
We propose an optomechanical nano-gravimeter based on exceptional points. The system is a coupled cavity optomechanical system, in which the gain and loss are applied by driving the cavities with a blue detuned and red detuned electromagnetic field, respectively. When the gain and loss reach a balance, the system will show the degeneracy of exceptional points, and any perturbation will cause an eigenfrequencies split, which is proportional to the square root of the perturbation strength. Compared with the traditional optomechanical sensors, the sensitivity is greatly enhanced. This work paves …
We study optomechanically induced transparency in a microresonator coupled with nanoparticles. By tuning the relative angle of the nanoparticles, exceptional points (EPs) emerge periodically in this system and thus strongly modify both the transmission rate and the group delay of the signal. As a result, controllable slow-to-fast light switching can be achieved by manipulating external nanoparticles. This provides a new way to engineer EP-assisted optomechanical devices for applications in optical communications and signal processing.
Dynamical encircling exceptional point(EP) shows a number of intriguing physical phenomena and its potential applications. To enrich the manipulations of optical systems in experiment, here, we study the dynamical encircling EP, i.e. state transfer process, in largely detuned multimode optomechanical system. The process of state transfer has been investigated with different factors about the location of start point, the orientation and the initial state of the trajectories around the EP in parameter space. Results show that the nonreciprocal and the chiral topological energy transfer between t…
Exceptional points (EPs) represent a distinct type of spectral singularity in non-Hermitian systems, and intriguing physics concepts have been studied with optical EPs recently. As a system beyond photonics, the mechanical oscillators coupling with many physical systems are expected to be further exploited EPs for mechanical sensing, topology energy transfer, nonreciprocal dynamics etc. In this study, we demonstrated on-chip mechanical EPs with a silicon optomechanical zipper cavity, wherein two near-degenerate mechanical breathing modes are coupled via a single co-localized optical mode. By t…
Topological operations have the merit of achieving certain goals without requiring accurate control over local operational details. To date, topological operations have been used to control geometric phases, and have been proposed as a means for controlling the state of certain systems within their degenerate subspaces[1-8]. More recently, it was predicted that topological operations can be extended to transfer energy between normal modes, provided that the system possesses a specific type of degeneracy known as an exceptional point (EP)[9-11]. Here we demonstrate the transfer of energy betwee…

Diamond cavity optomechanical devices hold great promise for quantum technology based on coherent coupling between photons, phonons and spins. These devices benefit from the exceptional physical properties of diamond, including its low mechanical dissipation and optical absorption. However the nanoscale dimensions and mechanical isolation of these devices can make them susceptible to thermo-optic instability when operating at the high intracavity field strengths needed to realize coherent photon--phonon coupling. In this work, we overcome these effects through engineering of the device geometr…
Non-Hermitian systems exhibit phenomena that are qualitatively different from those of Hermitian systems and have been exploited to achieve a number of ends, including the generation of exceptional points, nonreciprocal dynamics, non-orthogonal normal modes, and topological operations. However to date these effects have only been accessible with nearly-degenerate modes (i.e., modes with frequency difference comparable to their linewidth and coupling rate). Here we demonstrate an optomechanical scheme that extends topological control to highly non-degenerate modes of a non-Hermitian system. Spe…
Optomechanical cavities have proven to be an exceptional tool to explore fundamental and technological aspects of the interaction between mechanical and optical waves. Such interactions strongly benefit from cavities with large optomechanical coupling, high mechanical and optical quality factors, and mechanical frequencies larger than the optical mode linewidth, the so called resolved sideband limit. Here we demonstrate a novel optomechanical cavity based on a disk with a radial mechanical bandgap. This design confines light and mechanical waves through distinct physical mechanisms which allow…
Almost a decade ago, physicists encountered a strange quantum phenomenon that predicts an unusual death of entanglement under the influence of local noisy environment, known as entanglement sudden death (ESD). This could be an immediate stumbling block in realizing all the entanglement based quantum information and computation protocols. In this work, we propose a scheme to tackle such shortcomings by exploiting the phenomenon of exceptional points (EP). Starting with a binary mechanical $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric system, realized over an optomechanical platform, we show that a substantial delay …

We engineer mechanical gain (loss) in system formed by two optomechanical cavities (OMCs), that are mechanically coupled. The gain (loss) is controlled by driving the resonator with laser that is blue (red) detuned. We predict analytically the existence of multiple exceptional points (EPs), a form of degeneracy where the eigenvalues of the system coalesce. At each EP, phase transition occurs, and the system switches from weak to strong coupling regimes and vice versa. In the weak coupling regime, the system locks on an intermediate frequency, resulting from coalescence at the EP. In strong cou…
Brillouin systems operating in the quantum regime have recently been identified as a valuable tool for quantum information technologies and fundamental science. However, reaching the quantum regime is extraordinarily challenging, owing to the stringent requirements of combining low thermal occupation with low optical and mechanical dissipation, and large coherent phonon-photon interactions. Here, we propose an on-chip liquid based Brillouin system that is predicted to exhibit ultra-high coherent phonon-photon coupling with exceptionally low acoustic dissipation. The system is comprised of a si…
Placing a nanomechanical object in the evanescent near-field of a high-$Q$ optical microcavity gives access to strong gradient forces and quantum-noise-limited displacement readout, offering an attractive platform for precision sensing technology and basic quantum optics research. Robustly implementing this platform is challenging, however, as it requires separating optically smooth surfaces by $\lesssimλ/10$. Here we describe a fully-integrated evanescent opto-nanomechanical transducer based on a high-stress Si$_3$N$_4$ nanobeam monolithically suspended above a SiO$_2$ microdisk cavity. Emplo…
