Acoustic black holes are formed when a fluid flowing with subsonic velocities, accelerates and becomes supersonic. When the flow is directed from the subsonic to supersonic region, the surface on which the normal component of fluid velocity equals the local speed of sound acts as an acoustic horizon. This is because no acoustic perturbation from the supersonic region can cross it to reach the subsonic part of the fluid. One can show that if the fluid velocity is locally irrotational, the field equations for acoustic perturbations of the velocity potential are identical to that of a massless scalar field propagating in a black hole background. One, therefore, expects Hawking radiation in the form of a thermal spectrum of phonons. There have been numerous investigations of this possibility, theoretically, as well as experimentally, in systems ranging from cold atom systems to quark-gluon plasma formed in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Here we investigate this possibility in the hydrodynamic flow of electrons. Resulting Hawking radiation in this case should be observable in terms of current fluctuations. Further, current fluctuations on both sides of the acoustic horizon should show correlations expected for pairs of Hawking particles.
Hawking radiation from Unruh's and Canonical acoustic black hole is considered from viewpoint of anomaly cancellation method developed by Robinson and Wilczek. Thus, the physics near the horizon can be described using an infinite collection of massless two-dimensional scalar fields in the background of a dilaton and the gravitational anomaly is canceled by the flux of a 1 + 1 dimensional blackbody at the Hawking temperature of the space-time. Consequently, by this method, we can get the Hawking's temperature for Canonical and Unruh's acoustic black hole.
Recent studies [J. Steinhauer, Nature Phys., $\textbf{10}$, 864 (2014); Phys. Rev. D $\textbf{92}$, 024043 (2015)] provide compelling evidences that Hawking radiation could be experimentally proven by using an analogue black hole. In this paper, taking this situation into account we study the quantum gravitational effects on the Hawking radiation of rotating acoustic black holes. For this purpose, we consider the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) in the phenomenon of quantum tunneling. We firstly take the modified commutation relations into account to compute the GUP modified Hawking tem…
A non-Riemannian geometrical approach to the investigation of an acoustic black hole in irrotational mean flows, based on the Lighthill vortex sound theory is given. This additional example of analog gravity based on classical fluids is used to investigate the acoustic Lorentz violation. An example is given where the contortion vector is distributed along a ring inside the fluid which can be gravitational analog of the torsion thick string spacetime defect. It is found that the linear background flow velocity approximation, acoustic Lorentz symmetry is breaking by the acoustic Cartan contortio…
Rotating acoustic metrics may have black holes inside the ergosphere. Simple cases of acoustic black holes were studied in the references [21], [4]. In the present paper we study the Hawking radiation for more complicated cases of acoustic black holes including black holes that have corner points.
Acoustic holes are the hydrodynamic analogue of standard black holes. Featuring an acoustic horizon, these systems spontaneously emit phonons at the Hawking temperature. We derive the Hawking temperature of the acoustic horizon by fully exploiting the analogy between black and acoustic holes within a covariant kinetic theory approach. After deriving the phonon distribution function from the covariant kinetic equations, we reproduce the expression of the Hawking temperature by equating the entropy and energy losses of the acoustic hole and the entropy and energy gains of the spontaneously emitt…
We obtain the analytic solutions of the radial part of the massless Klein-Gordon equation in the spacetime of both three dimensional rotating and four dimensional canonical acoustic black holes, which are given in terms of the confluent Heun functions. From these solutions, we obtain the scalar waves near the acoustic horizon. We discuss the analogue Hawking radiation of massless scalar particles and the features of the spectrum associated with the radiation emitted by these acoustic black holes.
Various properties of acoustic black holes constructed in Minkowski spacetime have been widely studied in the past decades. Recently the acoustic black holes in general spacetime were proposed . In this paper, we first investigate the basic characteristics of `curved' acoustic black hole in Schwarzschild spacetime, including the quasi-normal modes, grey-body factor and analogous Hawking radiation. We find that the signal of quasi-normal mode is weaker than that of Schwarzschild black hole. Moreover, as the tuning parameter increases, both the positive real part and negative imaginal part of th…
Astrophysical black holes are generally surrounded by accretion disks, galactic matter and the omnipresent cosmic microwave background radiation, thus allowing for the concurrent propagation of both gravitational and sound waves. Recently, acoustic black holes were embedded in Schwarzschild spacetime allowing for the coexistence of event and acoustic horizons. Here, we obtain a class of perturbative solutions to the field equations of the relativistic Gross-Pitaevskii and Yang-Mills theories, which describe sound waves propagating on a curved slowly-rotating acoustic black hole, akin to Lense-…
Bogoliubov pseudoparticle creation in a BEC undergoing a WH like flow is investigated analytically in the case of a one dimensional geometry with stepwise homogeneous regions. Comparison of the results with those corresponding to a BH flow is performed. The implications for the analogous gravitational problem is discussed.
We have used the analogy between gravitational systems and non-homogeneous fluid flows to calculate the density-density correlation function of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of an acoustic black hole. The emission of correlated pairs of phonons by Hawking-like process results into a peculiar long-range density correlation. Quantitative estimations of the effect are provided for realistic experimental configurations.
We report numerical evidence of Hawking emission of Bogoliubov phonons from a sonic horizon in a flowing one-dimensional atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. The presence of Hawking radiation is revealed from peculiar long-range patterns in the density-density correlation function of the gas. Quantitative agreement between our fully microscopic calculations and the prediction of analog models is obtained in the hydrodynamic limit. New features are predicted and the robustness of the Hawking signal against a finite temperature discussed.
We study the Hawking radiation for the acoustic black hole. In the beginning we follow the outline of T.Jacobson but then we use a different $2+1$ vacuum state similar to the vacuum state constructed by W.Unruh. We also use a special form of the wave packets. The focus of the paper is to treat the 2 dimensional case, in particular, the case when the radial and angular velocity are variable.
In this article we propose to simulate acoustic black holes with ions in rings. If the ions are rotating with a stationary and inhomogeneous velocity profile, regions can appear where the ion velocity exceeds the group velocity of the phonons. In these regions phonons are trapped like light in black holes, even though we have a discrete field theory and a nonlinear dispersion relation. We study the appearance of Hawking radiation in this setup and propose a scheme to detect it.
Our knowledge of dynamical black holes suffers from a lack of observational insight. In an analogue model of gravity, we can design a longitudinally symmetric dynamical acoustic black hole with a moving horizon. In this symmetric spacetime, the marginally outer trapped surface and the so called evolving horizon are degenerate. Interestingly, there are many ways of assigning a surface gravity to the horizon in the absence of time translation invariance. Here, we present two of them that are distinguished by whether they are defined only locally or take into account the global properties of spac…
We present a detailed analytical analysis of the propagation of Bogoliubov phonons on top of Bose-Einstein condensates with spatial and temporal step-like discontinuities in the hydrodynamic limit and focus on some features in the correlations patterns, in particular of density-density correlations. The application to the study of the Hawking signal in the formation of acoustic black hole-like configurations is also discussed.
A numerical simulation of fluid flows in a Laval nozzle is performed to observe formations of acoustic black holes and the classical counterpart to Hawking radiation under a realistic setting of the laboratory experiment. We determined the Hawking temperature of the acoustic black hole from obtained numerical data. Some noteworthy points in analyzing the experimental data are clarified through our numerical simulation.
Arising out of a Non-local non-relativistic BEC, we present an Analogue gravity model upto $\mathcal{O}(ξ^{2})$ accuracy in the presence of the quantum potential term for a canonical acoustic BH in $(3+1)$-d spacetime where the series solution of the free minimally coupled KG equation for the large length scale massive scalar modes is derived. We systematically address the issues of the presence of the quantum potential term being the root cause of a UV-IR coupling between short wavelength `primary' modes which are supposedly Hawking radiated through the sonic horizon and the large wavelength …
Using the action principle we first review how linear density perturbations (sound waves) in an Eulerian fluid obey a relativistic equation: the d'Alembert equation. This analogy between propagation of sound and that of a massless scalar field in a Lorentzian metric also applies to non-homogeneous flows. In these cases, sound waves effectively propagate in a curved four-dimensional ''acoustic'' metric whose properties are determined by the flow. Using this analogy, we consider regular flows which become supersonic, and show that the acoustic metric behaves like that of a black hole. The analog…
It is a deceptively simple question to ask how acoustic disturbances propagate in a non-homogeneous flowing fluid. This question can be answered by invoking the language of Lorentzian differential geometry: If the fluid is barotropic and inviscid, and the flow is irrotational (though possibly time dependent), then the equation of motion for the velocity potential describing a sound wave is identical to that for a minimally coupled massless scalar field propagating in a (3+1)-dimensional Lorentzian geometry. The acoustic metric governing the propagation of sound depends algebraically on the den…
The study of acoustic black holes has been undertaken to provide new insights about the role of high frequencies in black hole evaporation. Because of the infinite gravitational redshift from the event horizon, Hawking quanta emerge from configurations which possessed ultra high (trans-Planckian) frequencies. Therefore Hawking radiation cannot be derived within the framework of a low energy effective theory; and in all derivations there are some assumptions concerning Planck scale physics. The analogy with condensed matter physics was thus introduced to see if the asymptotic properties of the …
Acoustic analogues of Kerr black hole in plasmas are considered, by taking for granted the existence of acoustic ion waves in plasmas. An effective black holes (BH) in curved Riemannian spacetime in a random walk plasmas is endowed with a naked singularity, when plasmas are in the lowest diffusion mode. The plasma particle diffusion is encoded in the effective metric. The diffusive solution has a horizon when the plasma flow reaches the sound velocity in the medium and a shock wave is obtained inside the slab. The sonic black hole curved Riemannian metric is also found in terms of particle num…
We discuss the issue of quasi-particle production by ``analogue black holes'' with particular attention to the possibility of reproducing Hawking radiation in a laboratory. By constructing simple geometric acoustic models, we obtain a somewhat unexpected result: We show that in order to obtain a stationary and Planckian emission of quasi-particles, it is not necessary to create a trapped region in the acoustic spacetime (corresponding to a supersonic regime in the fluid flow). It is sufficient to set up a dynamically changing flow asymptotically approaching a sonic regime with sufficient rapid…
Acoustic propagation in a moving fluid provides a conceptually clean and powerful analogy for understanding black hole physics. As a teaching tool, the analogy is useful for introducing students to both General Relativity and fluid mechanics. As a research tool, the analogy helps clarify what aspects of the physics are kinematics and what aspects are dynamics. In particular, Hawking radiation is a purely kinematical effect, whereas black hole entropy is intrinsically dynamical. Finally, I discuss the fact that with present technology acoustic Hawking radiation is almost experimentally testable…
We propose a new analogue model of gravity - the evolving quark gluon plasma (QGP) produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions. This quark gluon plasma is the "most inviscid" fluid known. Such low kinematic viscosity is believed to reflect strongly correlated nature for QGP in these experiments. Hence, it may provide a good example of a quantum fluid naturally suited to studies of acoustic Hawking radiation. Due to rapid longitudinal expansion, presence of a sonic horizon is also naturally guaranteed here, though, in general, this horizon is not static. Using Ultra relativistic quantum molec…
In this paper, we study the acoustic black hole emerged from the nonextremal black D3-brane, based on the holographic approaches in constructing the acoustic black hole in asymptotically Anti de-Sitter spacetime (AAdS) and the effective hydrodynamic description of the nonextremal black D3-brane. We show that the holographic dual description of the acoustic black hole appeared on the timelike cutoff surface in the nonextremal black D3-brane also exist. The duality includes the dynamical connection between the acoustic black hole and the bulk gravity, a universal equation relating the Hawking-li…
With the attempt to find the holographic description of usual acoustic black holes in fluid, we construct an acoustic black hole formed in the $d$-dimensional fluid located at the timelike cutoff surface of a neutral black brane in asymptotically AdS$_{d+1}$ spacetime, the bulk gravitational dual of the acoustic black hole is presented at first order of the hydrodynamic fluctuation. Moreover, the Hawking-like temperature of the acoustic black hole horizon is showed to be connected to the Hawking temperature of the real AdS black brane in the bulk, and the duality between the phonon scattering …
For axially symmetric flow of dissipationless inhomogeneous fluid onto a non rotating astrophysical black hole under the influence of a generalized pseudo-Schwarzschild gravitational potential, we investigate the influence of the background flow configuration on determining the salient features of the corresponding acoustic geometry. The acoustic horizon for the aforementioned flow structure has been located and the corresponding acoustic surface gravity $κ$ as well as the associated analogue Hawking temperature $T_{\rm AH}$ has been calculated {\it analytically}. The dependence of $κ$ on the …
In this paper we explore the effect of the generalized uncertainty principle and modified dispersion relation to compute Hawking radiation from a rotating acoustic black hole in the tunneling formalism by using the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approximation applied to the Hamilton-Jacobi method. The starting point is to consider the planar acoustic black hole metric found in a Lorentz-violating Abelian Higgs model. In our analyzes we investigate quantum corrections for the Hawking temperature and entropy. A logarithmic correction and an extra term that depends on a conserved charge were obt…
Acoustic black holes are fluid dynamic analogs of general relativistic black holes, wherein the behaviour of sound waves in a moving fluid acts as an analog for scalar fields propagating in a gravitational background. Acoustic horizons possess many of the properties more normally associated with the event horizons of general relativity, up to and including Hawking radiation. They have received much attention because it would seem to be much easier to experimentally create an acoustic horizon than to create an event horizon. We wish to point out some potential difficulties (and opportunities) i…
We obtain an effective acoustic metric with quantum corrections that are provided by a minimum length implemented by the generalized Heisenberg uncertainty principle (GUP) in the Abelian Higgs model. The effective acoustic metric now depends on the contribution of scalar and vector potentials. We also explore the Hawking radiation and entropy by considering the effective canonical acoustic black hole and find that the modified Hawking temperature leads to logarithm corrections to the entropy. Finally, we investigate the dispersion relations of the model to establish the relationships among the…
Viscous dissipation, as a small perturbative effect about the Bondi flow, shrinks its sonic sphere. An Eulerian perturbation on the steady flow gives a wave equation and the corresponding dispersion relation. The perturbation is a high-frequency travelling acoustic wave, in which small dissipation is taken iteratively. The wave, propagating radially outwards against the bulk inflow, is blocked just within the sonic horizon, where the amplitude of the wave diverges because of viscosity. The blocked acoustic wave can still tunnel outward through the horizon with a viscosity-dependent decaying am…
This paper discusses a recent proposal for the simulation of acoustic black holes with ions. The ions are rotating on a ring with an inhomogeneous, but stationary velocity profile. Phonons cannot leave a region, in which the ion velocity exceeds the group velocity of the phonons, as light cannot escape from a black hole. The system is described by a discrete field theory with a nonlinear dispersion relation. Hawking radiation is emitted by this acoustic black hole, generating entanglement between the inside and the outside of the black hole. We study schemes to detect the Hawking effect in thi…
In this paper, we first analyze the horizon structure of the acoustic charged black hole in curved spacetime, and then study its acoustic shadow as well as the near-horizon characteristics including the quasinormal modes (QNM) frequencies and analogue Hawking radiation. We find that the radius of the acoustic shadow for acoustic charged black hole is larger than that for Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole, and both of them are suppressed by increasing the black hole charge because their related outer horizons become smaller. Then the QNM frequencies under scalar field perturbation and its eiko…
Hawking radiation, despite its presence in theoretical physics for over thirty years, remains elusive and undetected. It also suffers, in its original context of gravitational black holes, from conceptual difficulties. Of particular note is the trans-Planckian problem, which is concerned with the apparent origin of the radiation in absurdly high frequencies. In order to gain better theoretical understanding and, it is hoped, experimental verification of Hawking radiation, much study is being devoted to systems which model the spacetime geometry of black holes, and which, by analogy, are also t…
Acoustic waves in fluids undergoing the transition from sub- to supersonic flow satisfy governing equations similar to those for light waves in the immediate vicinity of a black hole event horizon. This acoustic analogy has been used by Unruh and others as a conceptual model for `Hawking radiation.' Here we use variational methods, originally introduced by Brizard for the study of linearized MHD, and ray phase space methods, to analyze linearized acoustics in the presence of background flows. The variational formulation endows the evolution equations with natural Hermitian and symplectic struc…
We consider a model of an acoustic black hole formed by a quasi-one dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate with a step-like horizon. This system is analyzed by solving the corresponding Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation with an appropriate matching condition at the jump. When the step is between a subsonic and supersonic flow, a sonic horizon develops and in addition to the scattering coefficients we compute the distribution of the accompanying analogue Hawking radiation. Additionally, in response to the abrupt variation in flow and non-linear Bogoliubov dispersion relation, evanescent solutions of …
We present a novel interpretation of the Hawking temperature of acoustic holes, the hydrodynamic analogue of standard black holes, by connecting the geometrical properties of the horizon with the distribution function of the spontaneously generated phonons. Using covariant kinetic theory to describe the phonon gas emitted by the acoustic hole, we obtain the correct expression of the Hawking temperature by equating the entropy loss of the acoustic horizon with the entropy gain of the phonon gas. In doing this, we assume that the entropy of the acoustic hole is proportional to the area of the ho…
Acoustic analogues of black holes (dumb holes) are generated when a supersonic fluid flow entrains sound waves and forms a trapped region from which sound cannot escape. The surface of no return, the acoustic horizon, is qualitatively very similar to the event horizon of a general relativity black hole. In particular Hawking radiation (a thermal bath of phonons with temperature proportional to the ``surface gravity'') is expected to occur. In this note we consider quasi-one-dimensional supersonic flow of a Bose--Einstein condensate (BEC) in a Laval nozzle (converging-diverging nozzle), with a …
In \cite{PRL2011}, the authors have {\it "conducted experiments in order to verify the thermal nature of the stimulated Hawking process at a white hole horizon in a fluid analogue gravity system"} namely the linear mode conversion giving rise to negative energy waves i.e. the classical ingredient at the root of the Hawking effect in astrophysics. However, here we show that these experiments in Vancouver operated in a weakly non-linear regime that obscure them as was the case for the seminal experiments in Nice within a stronger non-linear regime \cite{NJP2008}. We finally shed some light on th…
We investigate, within the framework of Quantum Field Theory in curved space, the correlations across the horizon of a black hole in order to highlight the particle-partner pair creation mechanism at the origin of Hawking radiation. The analysis concerns both acoustic black holes, formed by Bose-Einstein condensates, and gravitational black holes. More precisely, we have considered a typical acoustic black hole metric with two asymptotic homogeneous regions and the Schwarzschild metric as describing a gravitational black hole. By considering equal time correlation functions, we find a striking…
We study the quantum fluctuations in a one dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate realizing an analogous acoustic black hole. The taking into account of evanescent channels and of zero modes makes it possible to accurately reproduce recent experimental measurements of the density correlation function. We discuss the determination of Hawking temperature and show that in our model the analogous radiation presents some significant departure from thermality.
Hydrodynamics knots are not only promising elementary structures to study mass and momentum transfer in turbulent flows, but also potent analogs for other topological problems arising in particle physics. However, experimental studies of knots are highly challenging due to the limited control over knot generation and difficult observation of the resulting fast-paced multiscale flow evolution. In this paper, we propose using acoustic streaming to tie hydrodynamic knots in fluids. The method is contactless, almost instantaneous and is relatively insensitive to viscosity. Importantly, it allows s…
Acoustic black holes are very interesting non-gravitational objects which can be described by the geometrical formalism of General Relativity. These models can be useful to experimentally test effects otherwise undetectable, as for example the Hawking radiation. The back-reaction effects on the background quantities induced by the analogue Hawking radiation could be the key to indirectly observe it. We briefly show how this analogy works and derive the backreaction equations for the linearized quantum fluctuations in the background of an acoustic black hole. A first order in hbar solution is g…
In black hole evaporation process, the mass of the hole anti-correlates with the Hawking temperature. This indicates that the smaller holes have higher surface gravity. For analogue Hawking effects, however, the acoustic surface gravity is determined by the local values of the dynamical velocity of the stationary background fluid flow and the speed of propagation of the characteristic perturbation embedded in the background fluid, as well as by their space derivatives evaluated along the direction normal to the acoustic horizon, respectively. The mass of the analogue system - whether classical…
In this paper we extend the hydrodynamic results of [1] and study, analytically, the propagation of Bogoliubov phonons on top of Bose-Einstein condensates with step-like discontinuities by taking into account dispersion effects. We focus on the Hawking signal in the density-density correlations in the formation of acoustic black hole-like configurations.
Classical black hole analogues (alternatively, the analogue systems) are fluid dynamical analogue of general relativistic black holes. Such analogue effects may be observed when acoustic perturbations (sound waves) propagate through a classical dissipation-less tran-sonic fluid. The acoustic horizon, which resembles the actual black hole event horizon in many ways, may be generated at the transonic point in the fluid flow. Acoustic horizon emits quasi thermal phonon spectra, which is analogous to the actual Hawking radiation, and possesses the temperature referred as the analogue Hawking tempe…
Observing quantum particle creation by black holes (Hawking radiation) in the astrophysical context is, in ordinary situations, hopeless. Nevertheless the Hawking effect, which depends only on kinematical properties of wave propagation in the presence of horizons, is present also in nongravitational contexts, for instance in stationary fluids undergoing supersonic flow. We present results on how to observe the analog Hawking radiation in Bose-Einstein condensates by a direct measurement of the density correlations due to the phonon pairs (Hawking quanta-partner) created by the acoustic horizon…
We consider a sonic analog of a black hole realized in the one-dimensional flow of a Bose-Einstein condensate. Our theoretical analysis demonstrates that one- and two-body momentum distributions accessible by present-day experimental techniques provide clear direct evidence (i) of the occurrence of a sonic horizon, (ii) of the associated acoustic Hawking radiation and (iii) of the quantum nature of the Hawking process. The signature of the quantum behavior persists even at temperatures larger than the chemical potential.
We study the sound perturbation of a rotating acoustic black hole in the presence of a disclination. The radial part of the massless Klein-Gordon equation is written into a Heun form, and its analytical solution is obtained. These solutions have an explicit dependence on the parameter of the disclination. We obtain the exact Hawking-Unruh radiation spectrum.
