This paper concerns pseudo labelling in segmentation. Our contribution is fourfold. Firstly, we present a new formulation of pseudo-labelling as an Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm for clear statistical interpretation. Secondly, we propose a semi-supervised medical image segmentation method purely based on the original pseudo labelling, namely SegPL. We demonstrate SegPL is a competitive approach against state-of-the-art consistency regularisation based methods on semi-supervised segmentation on a 2D multi-class MRI brain tumour segmentation task and a 3D binary CT lung vessel segmentation task. The simplicity of SegPL allows less computational cost comparing to prior methods. Thirdly, we demonstrate that the effectiveness of SegPL may originate from its robustness against out-of-distribution noises and adversarial attacks. Lastly, under the EM framework, we introduce a probabilistic generalisation of SegPL via variational inference, which learns a dynamic threshold for pseudo labelling during the training. We show that SegPL with variational inference can perform uncertainty estimation on par with the gold-standard method Deep Ensemble.

In this project, we study the hidden Markov random field (HMRF) model and its expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm. We implement a MATLAB toolbox named HMRF-EM-image for 2D image segmentation using the HMRF-EM framework. This toolbox also implements edge-prior-preserving image segmentation, and can be easily reconfigured for other problems, such as 3D image segmentation.
This paper addresses the issue of matching rigid 3D object points with 2D image points through point registration based on maximum likelihood principle in computer simulated images. Perspective projection is necessary when transforming 3D coordinate into 2D. The problem then recasts into a missing data framework where unknown correspondences are handled via mixture models. Adopting the Expectation Conditional Maximization for Point Registration (ECMPR), two different rotation and translation optimization algorithms are compared in this paper. We analyze in detail the associated consequences in…

Central to the application of many multi-view geometry algorithms is the extraction of matching points between multiple viewpoints, enabling classical tasks such as camera pose estimation and 3D reconstruction. Many approaches that characterize these points have been proposed based on hand-tuned appearance models or data-driven learning methods. We propose Soft Expectation and Deep Maximization (SEDM), an iterative unsupervised learning process that directly optimizes the repeatability of the features by posing the problem in a similar way to expectation maximization (EM). We found convergence…

Integrating model-based machine learning methods into deep neural architectures allows one to leverage both the expressive power of deep neural nets and the ability of model-based methods to incorporate domain-specific knowledge. In particular, many works have employed the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm in the form of an unrolled layer-wise structure that is jointly trained with a backbone neural network. However, it is difficult to discriminatively train the backbone network by backpropagating through the EM iterations as they are prone to the vanishing gradient problem. To address t…
Anomaly detection in crowds enables early rescue response. A plug-and-play smart camera for crowd surveillance has numerous constraints different from typical anomaly detection: the training data cannot be used iteratively; there are no training labels; and training and classification needs to be performed simultaneously. We tackle all these constraints with our approach in this paper. We propose a Core Anomaly-Detection (CAD) neural network which learns the motion behavior of objects in the scene with an unsupervised method. On average over standard datasets, CAD with a single epoch of traini…
Object detection when provided image-level labels instead of instance-level labels (i.e., bounding boxes) during training is an important problem in computer vision, since large scale image datasets with instance-level labels are extremely costly to obtain. In this paper, we address this challenging problem by developing an Expectation-Maximization (EM) based object detection method using deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Our method is applicable to both the weakly-supervised and semi-supervised settings. Extensive experiments on PASCAL VOC 2007 benchmark show that (1) in the weakly s…

Pel-recursive motion estimation isa well-established approach. However, in the presence of noise, it becomes an ill-posed problem that requires regularization. In this paper, motion vectors are estimated in an iterative fashion by means of the Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm and a Gaussian data model. Our proposed algorithm also utilizes the local image properties of the scene to improve the motion vector estimates following a spatially adaptive approach. Numerical experiments are presented that demonstrate the merits of our method.

We present a semi-supervised algorithm for lung cancer screening in which a 3D Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is trained using the Expectation-Maximization (EM) meta-algorithm. Semi-supervised learning allows a smaller labelled data-set to be combined with an unlabeled data-set in order to provide a larger and more diverse training sample. EM allows the algorithm to simultaneously calculate a maximum likelihood estimate of the CNN training coefficients along with the labels for the unlabeled training set which are defined as a latent variable space. We evaluate the model performance of the…

The recent evolution of hyperspectral imaging technology and the proliferation of new emerging applications presses for the processing of multiple temporal hyperspectral images. In this work, we propose a novel spectral unmixing (SU) strategy using physically motivated parametric endmember representations to account for temporal spectral variability. By representing the multitemporal mixing process using a state-space formulation, we are able to exploit the Bayesian filtering machinery to estimate the endmember variability coefficients. Moreover, by assuming that the temporal variability of th…
This paper introduces a novel and distributed method for detecting inter-map loop closure outliers in simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). The proposed algorithm does not rely on a good initialization and can handle more than two maps at a time. In multi-robot SLAM applications, maps made by different agents have nonidentical spatial frames of reference which makes initialization very difficult in the presence of outliers. This paper presents a probabilistic approach for detecting incorrect orientation measurements prior to pose graph optimization by checking the geometric consistency…

We introduce Equivariant Neural Field Expectation Maximization (EFEM), a simple, effective, and robust geometric algorithm that can segment objects in 3D scenes without annotations or training on scenes. We achieve such unsupervised segmentation by exploiting single object shape priors. We make two novel steps in that direction. First, we introduce equivariant shape representations to this problem to eliminate the complexity induced by the variation in object configuration. Second, we propose a novel EM algorithm that can iteratively refine segmentation masks using the equivariant shape prior.…
Real-time point cloud processing is fundamental for lots of computer vision tasks, while still challenged by the computational problem on resource-limited edge devices. To address this issue, we implement XNOR-Net-based binary neural networks (BNNs) for an efficient point cloud processing, but its performance is severely suffered due to two main drawbacks, Gaussian-distributed weights and non-learnable scale factor. In this paper, we introduce point-wise operations based on Expectation-Maximization (POEM) into BNNs for efficient point cloud processing. The EM algorithm can efficiently constrai…

Weakly-supervised action localization requires training a model to localize the action segments in the video given only video level action label. It can be solved under the Multiple Instance Learning (MIL) framework, where a bag (video) contains multiple instances (action segments). Since only the bag's label is known, the main challenge is assigning which key instances within the bag to trigger the bag's label. Most previous models use attention-based approaches applying attentions to generate the bag's representation from instances, and then train it via the bag's classification. These model…
We introduce an automatic, end-to-end method for recovering the 3D pose and shape of dogs from monocular internet images. The large variation in shape between dog breeds, significant occlusion and low quality of internet images makes this a challenging problem. We learn a richer prior over shapes than previous work, which helps regularize parameter estimation. We demonstrate results on the Stanford Dog dataset, an 'in the wild' dataset of 20,580 dog images for which we have collected 2D joint and silhouette annotations to split for training and evaluation. In order to capture the large shape v…

Most existing algorithms for cross-modal Information Retrieval are based on a supervised train-test setup, where a model learns to align the mode of the query (e.g., text) to the mode of the documents (e.g., images) from a given training set. Such a setup assumes that the training set contains an exhaustive representation of all possible classes of queries. In reality, a retrieval model may need to be deployed on previously unseen classes, which implies a zero-shot IR setup. In this paper, we propose a novel GAN-based model for zero-shot text to image retrieval. When given a textual descriptio…

The problem is recast into a missing data framework where unknown correspondences are handled via mixture models. Adopting a maximum likelihood principle, we introduce an innovative EM-like algorithm, namely the Expectation Conditional Maximization for Point Registration (ECMPR) algorithm. The algorithm allows the use of general covariance matrices for the mixture model components and improves over the isotropic covariance case. We analyse in detail the associated consequences in t…

Most video-and-language representation learning approaches employ contrastive learning, e.g., CLIP, to project the video and text features into a common latent space according to the semantic similarities of text-video pairs. However, such learned shared latent spaces are not often optimal, and the modality gap between visual and textual representation can not be fully eliminated. In this paper, we propose Expectation-Maximization Contrastive Learning (EMCL) to learn compact video-and-language representations. Specifically, we use the Expectation-Maximization algorithm to find a compact set of…
Capsule Networks (CapsNets) are brand-new architectures that have shown ground-breaking results in certain areas of Computer Vision (CV). In 2017, Hinton and his team introduced CapsNets with routing-by-agreement in "Sabour et al" and in a more recent paper "Matrix Capsules with EM Routing" they proposed a more complete architecture with Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm. Unlike the traditional convolutional neural networks (CNNs), this architecture is able to preserve the pose of the objects in the picture. Due to this characteristic, it has been able to beat the previous state-of-thear…

Matching-based methods, especially those based on space-time memory, are significantly ahead of other solutions in semi-supervised video object segmentation (VOS). However, continuously growing and redundant template features lead to an inefficient inference. To alleviate this, we propose a novel Sequential Weighted Expectation-Maximization (SWEM) network to greatly reduce the redundancy of memory features. Different from the previous methods which only detect feature redundancy between frames, SWEM merges both intra-frame and inter-frame similar features by leveraging the sequential weighted …
Kidney volume is greatly affected in several renal diseases. Precise and automatic segmentation of the kidney can help determine kidney size and evaluate renal function. Fully convolutional neural networks have been used to segment organs from large biomedical 3D images. While these networks demonstrate state-of-the-art segmentation performances, they do not immediately translate to small foreground objects, small sample sizes, and anisotropic resolution in MRI datasets. In this paper we propose a new framework to address some of the challenges for segmenting 3D MRI. These methods were impleme…

Arbitrary-shaped text detection is an important and challenging task in computer vision. Most existing methods require heavy data labeling efforts to produce polygon-level text region labels for supervised training. In order to reduce the cost in data labeling, we study weakly-supervised arbitrary-shaped text detection for combining various weak supervision forms (e.g., image-level tags, coarse, loose and tight bounding boxes), which are far easier for annotation. We propose an Expectation-Maximization (EM) based weakly-supervised learning framework to train an accurate arbitrary-shaped text d…

Ellipsoid fitting is of general interest in machine vision, such as object detection and shape approximation. Most existing approaches rely on the least-squares fitting of quadrics, minimizing the algebraic or geometric distances, with additional constraints to enforce the quadric as an ellipsoid. However, they are susceptible to outliers and non-ellipsoid or biased results when the axis ratio exceeds certain thresholds. To address these problems, we propose a novel and robust method for ellipsoid fitting in a noisy, outlier-contaminated 3D environment. We explicitly model the ellipsoid by ker…

Registration of multi-view point sets is a prerequisite for 3D model reconstruction. To solve this problem, most of previous approaches either partially explore available information or blindly utilize unnecessary information to align each point set, which may lead to the undesired results or introduce extra computation complexity. To this end, this paper consider the multi-view registration problem as a maximum likelihood estimation problem and proposes a novel multi-view registration approach under the perspective of Expectation-Maximization (EM). The basic idea of our approach is that diffe…
