A pure spin current is predicted to occur when an external magnetic field and a linearly inhomogeneous spin-only field are appropriately aligned. Under these conditions (such as originate from nuclear contact hyperfine fields that do not affect orbital motion) a linear, spin-dependent dispersion for free electrons emerges from the Landau Hamiltonian. The result is that spins of opposite orientation flow in opposite directions giving rise to a pure spin current. A classical model of the spin and charge dynamics reveals intuitive aspects of the full quantum mechanical solution. We propose optical orientation or electrical polarization experiments to demonstrate this outcome.
Recent direct experimental observation of multiple highly-dispersive C$_{60}$ valence bands has allowed for a detailed analysis of the unique photoemission traits of these features through photon energy- and polarization-dependent measurements. Previously obscured dispersions and strong photoemission traits are now revealed by specific light polarizations. The observed intensity effects prove the locking in place of the C$_{60}$ molecules at low temperatures and the existence of an orientational order imposed by the substrate chosen. Most importantly, photon energy- and polarization-dependent …
By combining Floquet theory with Green's function formalism, we present non-adiabatic quantum spin and charge pumping through a zigzag ferromagnetic graphene nanoribbon including a double-barriers structure driven weakly by two local $ac$ gate voltages operating with a phase-lag. Over a wide range of Fermi energies, interesting quantum pumping such as i) pure spin pumping with zero net charge pumping, ii) pure charge pumping and iii) fully spin polarized pumping can be achieved by tuning and manipulating driving frequency in the non-adiabatic regime. Spin polarized pumping which is measurable …
In this work, we study the conductance and the thermoelectric properties of a quantum dot embedded between two metallic leads with a side-coupled triple quantum dot molecule under a magnetic field. We focus on the spin polarization and thermoelectric quantities. Our results show the possibility of design an efficient spin filter device besides a noticeable enhancement of the Seebeck coefficient driven by the asymmetry in the quantum dots energy levels and a tunable pure spin Seebeck effect is obtained. This behavior also holds in the interacting case, where a pure spin Seebeck effect can be ob…
We report the room-temperature electroluminescence (EL) with nearly pure circular polarization (CP) from GaAs-based spin-polarized light-emitting diodes (spin-LEDs). External magnetic fields are not used during device operation. There are two small schemes in the tested spin-LEDs: firstly, the stripe-laser-like structure that helps intensifying the EL light at the cleaved side walls below the spin injector Fe slab, and secondly, the crystalline AlOx spin tunnel barrier that ensures electrically stable device operation. The purity of CP is depressively low in the low current density (J) region,…

We observe multiple stable states of nuclear polarization in a double quantum dot under conditions of electron spin resonance. The stable states can be understood within an elaborated theoretical rate equation model for the polarization in each of the dots, in the limit of strong driving. This model also captures unusual features of the data, such as fast switching and a `wrong' sign of polarization. The results reported enable applications of this polarization effect, including manipulation and control of nuclear fields.
It is shown that, for appropriate values of electron energy, the silicene dot can work as a controllable spin polarizer. The spin polarizer can polarize the spin of transmitted electrons from nearly pure down to nearly pure up by changing the strength of an external electric field. Also, for spin polarized incoming electrons, the silicene quantum dot can invert the spin of electrons and can works as a spin inverter or a spin NOT gate. In addition, we investigate the effects of exchange field, induced by ferromagnetic substrate, on electron conductance and show that the silicene quantum dot can…
We study spin-valley and lattice-pseudo spin currents in a dual ferromagnetic-gated silicene-based junction. Silicene has buckled atomic structure which allows us to take sublattice-dependent ferromagnetism into account in the investigation. One of the study results show that transmission at the junctions exhibits anisotropic property only in anti-parallel cases. Interestingly, the studied junctions can be switched from a pure spin-polarizer to a pure valley-polarizer by reversing directions of exchange fields in the parallel junctions. The perfect control of spin-valley currents can be done o…
We propose a spintronic device to generate spin polarization in a mesoscopic region by purely electric means. We show that the spin Hall effect in combination with the stirring effect are sufficient to induce measurable spin polarization in a closed geometry. Our device structure does not require the application of magnetic fields, external radiation or ferromagnetic leads, and can be implemented in standard semiconducting materials.
Spin-blockaded quantum dots provide a unique setting for studying nuclear-spin dynamics in a nanoscale system. Despite recent experimental progress, observing phase-sensitive phenomena in nuclear spin dynamics remains challenging. Here we point out that such a possibility opens up in the regime where hyperfine exchange directly competes with a purely electronic spin-flip mechanism such as the spin-orbital interaction. Interference between the two spin-flip processes, resulting from long-lived coherence of the nuclear-spin bath, modulates the electron-spin-flip rate, making it sensitive to the …
Resonant optical excitation of lowest-energy excitonic transitions in self-assembled quantum dots lead to nuclear spin polarization that is qualitatively different from the well known optical orientation phenomena. By carrying out a comprehensive set of experiments, we demonstrate that nuclear spin polarization manifests itself in quantum dots subjected to finite external magnetic field as locking of the higher energy Zeeman transition to the driving laser field, as well as the avoidance of the resonance condition for the lower energy Zeeman branch. We interpret our findings on the basis of dy…

We experimentally demonstrate how coherent population trapping (CPT) for donor-bound electron spins in GaAs results in autonomous feedback that prepares stabilized states for the spin polarization of nuclei around the electrons. CPT was realized by excitation with two lasers to a bound-exciton state. Transmission studies of the spectral CPT feature on an ensemble of electrons directly reveal the statistical distribution of prepared nuclear spin states. Tuning the laser driving from blue to red detuned drives a transition from one to two stable states. Our results have importance for ongoing re…
A time periodic driving on a topologically trivial system induces edge modes and topological properties. In this work we consider triplet and singlet superconductors subject to periodic variations of the chemical potential, spin-orbit coupling and magnetization, in both topologically trivial and nontrivial phases, and study their influence on the charge and spin currents that propagate along the edges of the two-dimensional system, for moderate to large driving frequencies. Currents associated with the edge modes are induced in the trivial phases and enhanced in the topological phases. In some…
Dynamic polarization protocols aim to hyperpolarize a spin bath by transferring spin polarization from a well-controlled qubit such as a quantum dot or a color defect. Building on techniques from shortcuts to adiabaticity, we design fast and efficient dynamic polarization protocols in central spin models that apply to dipolarly interacting systems. The protocols maximize the transfer of polarization via bright states at a nearby integrable point, exploit the integrability-breaking terms to reduce the statistical weight on dark states that do not transfer polarization, and realize experimentall…
