Ultra-wide bandgap and the absence of shallow dopants are the major challenges in realizing diamond based electronics. However, the surface functionalization offers an excellent alternative to tune electronic structure of diamonds. Herein, we report on tuning the surface electronic properties of hydrogenated polycrystalline diamond films through oxygen functionalization. The hydrogenated diamond (HD) surface transforms from hydrophobic to hydrophilic nature and the sheet resistance increases from ~ 8 kohms/sq. to over 10 Gohms/sq. with progressive ozonation. The conductive atomic force microscopic (c-AFM) studies reveal preferential higher current conduction on selective grain interiors (GIs) than that of grain boundaries confirming the surface charge transfer doping on these HDs. In addition, the local current conduction is also found to be much higher on (111) planes as compared to (100) planes on pristine and marginally O-terminated HD. However, there is no current flow on the fully O-terminated diamond (OD) surface. Further, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) studies reveal a redshift in binding energy (BE) of C1s on pristine and marginally O-terminated HD surfaces indicating surface band bending whilst the BE shifts to higher energy for OD. Moreover, XPS analysis also corroborate c-AFM study for the possible charge transfer doping mechanism on the diamond films which results in high current conduction on GIs of pristine and partially O-terminated HDs.
Raman spectroscopy has been employed to distinguish between the Raman spectrum of pristine hydrogenated diamond like carbon (PHDLC) and that of electrochemically hydrogenated diamond like carbon (ECHDLC). The enhancement of the background photoluminescence (PL) in the Raman spectrum and broadening of PL spectrum of ECHDLC are identified to be due to increase of sp3 C-H density onto the PHDLC surface, during novel electrochemical process of hydrogenation of sp2 C=C into sp3 C-H.
Ultrananocrystalline diamond/hydrogenated amorphous carbon composite thin films synthesized via coaxial arc plasma possess a marked structural feature of diamond grains embedded in an amorphous carbon and a hydrogenated amorphous carbon matrix which are the largest constituents of the films. Since the amorphous nature yields much larger light absorption coefficients as well as a generation source of photo-induced carriers with UV rays, these films can be potential candidates for deep-UV photodetector applications. From some previous studies p-type conduction of the films has been realized by d…
In this article, based on first-principles calculations, we systematically study functionalization induced diamonization of graphene bilayer and graphene-BN hybrid bilayer. With single-side functionalization, the diamondized structures are magnetic semiconductor. Interestingly, if both sides of the bilayer are functionalized, diamondization becomes spontaneous without a barrier. On the other hand, when the bottom layer of the bilayer graphene is replaced by a single hexagonal BN layer, the diamondized structure becomes nonmagnetic metal. The tunable electronic and magnetic properties pave new …
The growth of thin amorphous hydrogenated carbon films (a-C:H) on diamond (111) surface from the bombardment of CH2 radicals is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. The structural analysis shows that the local structure (e.g., the first coordination number of C atoms) of a-C:H depends critically on the content of hydrogen. The increase of kinetic energy of incident radicals leads to the decrease of hydrogen content, which subsequently changes the ratio of sp3 bonded C atoms in a-C:H.
Ultranonocrystalline diamond/hydrogenated amorphous carbon composite thin films consist of three different components; ultrananocrystalline diamond crystallites, hydrogenated amorphous carbon, and grain boundaries between them. Since grain boundaries contain a lot of dangling bonds and unsaturated bonds, they would be a cause of carrier trap center degrading device performance in possible applications such as UV photo-detectors. We experimentally demonstrate hydrogen atoms preferentially incorporate at grain boundaries and terminate dangling bonds by means of several spectroscopic techniques. …
We have developed an effective model to investigate the energetic stability of hydrogenated group-IV nanostructures, followed by validations from first-principles calculations. It is found that the Hamiltonian of X$_{m}$H$_{n}$ (X=C, Si, Ge and Sn) can be expressed analytically by a linear combination of the atom numbers ($m$, $n$), indicating a dominating contribution of X$-$X and X$-$H local interactions. As a result, we explain the stable nanostructures observed experimentally, and provide a reliable and efficient technique of searching the magic structures of diamond nanocrystals(Dia-NCs) …
The Hydrogenated Diamond Like Carbon (HDLC) thin films are deposited on Silicon substrate at room temperature using asymmetric capacitively coupled RF plasma with varying flow rates of methane. These films are undergone annealing at high vacuum and high temperature furnace. The as-prepared and annealed HDLC films have been depth profiled for hydrogen using the resonance at 6.44 MeV in nuclear reaction between fluoride ion beam and HDLC. The as prepared films exhibit non-uniform depth distribution of hydrogen: it decreases with depth. Annealing in vacuum brings about a significant desorption of…

We investigate the possible occurrence of field-effect induced superconductivity in the hydrogenated $(111)$ diamond surface by first-principles calculations. By computing the band alignment between bulk diamond and the hydrogenated surface we show that the electric field exfoliates the sample, separating the electronic states at the valence band top from the bulk projected ones. At the hole doping values considered here, ranging from $n=2.84\times10^{13}$cm$^{-2}$ to $n=6\times 10^{14} $ cm$^{-2}$, the valence band top is composed of up to three electronic bands hosting holes with different e…
We report a systematic photoluminescence (PL) investigation of the spectral emission properties of individual optical defects fabricated in diamond upon ion implantation and annealing. Three spectral lines at 620 nm, 631 nm, and 647 nm are identified and attributed to the SnV center due to their occurrence in the PL spectra of the very same single-photon emitting defects. We show that the relative occurrence of the three spectral features can be modified by oxidizing the sample surface following thermal annealing. We finally report the relevant emission properties of each class of individual e…
We perform single- and multi-band Migdal-Eliashberg (ME) calculations with parameters exctracted from density functional theory (DFT) simulations to study superconductivity in the electric-field-induced 2-dimensional hole gas at the hydrogenated (111) diamond surface. We show that according to the Eliashberg theory it is possible to induce a high-T$_{\text{c}}$ superconducting phase when the system is field-effect doped to a surface hole concentration of $6\times10^{14}\,$cm$^{-2}$, where the Fermi level crosses three valence bands. Starting from the band-resolved electron-phonon spectral func…
The conversion of graphene into diamond is a new way for preparing ultrathin diamond film without pressure. Herein, we investigated the transformation mechanism of surface-hydrogenated bilayer graphene (SHBG) into surface-hydrogenated single-layer diamond (SHSLD) crystal, inserting fifteen kinds of single metal atoms without any pressure, by using the systematical first-principles calculations. Compared with the configuration without metal atom, SHBG can be transformed into SHSLD spontaneously in thermodynamics under the action of single metal atom, and its formation energy can even decrease f…
High biocompatibility, variable size ranging from ~ 5 nm, stable luminescence from its color centers and simple carbon chemistry for biomolecule grafting make nanodiamond (ND) particles an attractive alternative to molecular dyes for drug-delivery. Here we present a novel method for remote monitoring of chemical processes in biological environment based on color changes from photo-luminescent NV centers in ND. We propose to drive the NV luminescence chemically, by alternating the surface electric field developed by interacting atoms and molecules with the diamond surface. Due to the small ND s…
The electronic properties of chemically functionalized nanodiamonds are studied using density functional theory calculations. HOMO-LUMO gap and relative stabilities are calculated for different surface functionalization schemes and diamond nanocrystal morphologies. The effects of chemical decoration on the size and nature of the HOMO-LUMO gap of the various systems considered are discussed in detail. We conclude that surface chemical functionalization has the potential to become an accessible route for controlling the electronic properties of nanodiamonds.
The correlations between properties of hydrogenated diamond like carbon films and their Raman spectra have been investigated. The films are prepared by plasma deposition technique, keeping different hydrogen to methane ratio during the growth process. The hydrogen concentration, sp$^3$ content, hardness and optical Tauc gap of the materials have been estimated from a detail analysis of their Raman spectra. We have also measured the same parameters of the films by using other commonly used techniques, like sp$^3$ content in films by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, their Tauc gap by ellipsomet…
Hydrogenated diamond has been regarded as a promising material in electronic device applications, especially in field-effect transistors (FETs). However, the quality of diamond hydrogenation has not yet been established, nor has the specific orientation that would provide the optimum hydrogen coverage. In addition, most theoretical work in the literature use models with 100% hydrogenated diamond surfaces to study electronic properties, which is far from the experimentally observed hydrogen coverage. In this work, we have carried out a detailed study using fully atomistic reactive molecular dyn…
Using ab initio density functional theory and quantum transport calculations based on nonequilibrium Green's function formalism we study structural, electronic, and transport properties of hydrogen-terminated short graphene nanoribbons (graphene flakes) and their functionalization with vanadium atoms. Rectangular graphene flakes are stable, having geometric and electronic structures quite similar to that of extended graphene nanoribbons. We show that a spin-polarized current can be produced by pure, hydrogenated rectangular graphene flakes by exploiting the spatially-separated edge states of t…
Molecular contamination of a grazing incidence collector for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography was experimentally studied. A carbon film was found to have grown under irradiation from a pulsed tin plasma discharge. Our studies show that the film is chemically inert and has characteristics that are typical for a hydrogenated amorphous carbon film. It was experimentally observed that the film consists of carbon (~70 at. %), oxygen (~20 at. %) and hydrogen (bound to oxygen and carbon), along with a few at. % of tin. Most of the oxygen and hydrogen are most likely present as OH groups, chemica…
Micro-fabrication in diamond is involved in a wide set of emerging technologies, exploiting the exceptional characteristics of diamond for application in bio-physics, photonics, radiation detection. Micro ion-beam irradiation and pulsed laser irradiation are complementary techniques, which permit the implementation of complex geometries, by modification and functionalization of surface and/or bulk material, modifying the optical, electrical and mechanical characteristics of the material. In this article we summarize the work done in Florence (Italy) concerning ion beam and pulsed laser beam mi…
Graphene functionalization by hydrogen and fluorine has been proposed as a route to modulate its reactivity and electronic properties. However, until now, proposed systems present degradation and limited hydrogen adsorption capacity. In this study, combining first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) and reactive molecular dynamics, we analyze the tuning of hydrogen adsorption and electronic properties in fluorinated and hydrogenated monolayer graphenes. Our results indicate that fluorine adsorption promotes stronger carbon$-$hydrogen bonds. By changing the concentr…
A density functional theory study of the structural and electronic properties and relative stability of fluorinated sp3 silicon nanotubes and their corresponding silicon nanowires built along various crystallographic orientations is presented. The structural stability is found to increase linearly with the fluorine surface coverage and for coverages exceeding 25% the tubular structures are predicted to be more stable than their wire-like counterparts. The bandgaps of the fully fluorinated systems are lower than those of their fully hydrogenated counterparts by up to 0.79 eV for systems having …
We investigate the electronic structure and lattice stability of pristine and functionalized (with either hydrogen or oxygen) $α$-graphyne systems. We identify lattice instabilities due to soft-phonon modes, and describe two mechanisms leading to gap opening in the Dirac-fermion electronic spectrum of these systems: symmetry breaking, connected with the lattice instabilities, and partial incorporation of an $sp^3$-hybrid character in the covalent-bonding network of a buckled hydrogenated $α$-graphyne lattice that retains the symmetries of the parent pristine $α$-graphyne. In the case of an oxy…
The effect of monolayers of oxygen (O) and hydrogen (H) on the possibility of material transfer at aluminium/titanium nitride (Al/TiN) and copper/diamond (Cu/C$_{\text{dia}}$) interfaces, respectively, were investigated within the framework of density functional theory (DFT). To this end the approach, contact, and subsequent separation of two atomically flat surfaces consisting of the aforementioned pairs of materials were simulated. These calculations were performed for the clean as well as oxygenated and hydrogenated Al and C$_{\text{dia}}$ surfaces, respectively. Various contact configurati…
The surface functionalization of diamond has been extensively studied through a variety of techniques, such as oxidation. Several oxygen groups have been correspondingly detected on the oxidized diamond, such as COC (ester), CO (ketonic), and COH (hydroxyl). However, the composition and relative concentration of these groups on diamond surfaces can be affected by the type of oxygenation treatment and the diamond surface quality. To investigate the stability of the oxygenated groups at specific diamond surfaces, we evaluated through fully atomistic reactive molecular mechanics (FARMM) simulatio…
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging with shallow nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond offers an exciting route toward sensitive and localized chemical characterization at the nanoscale. Remarkable progress has been made to combat the degradation in coherence time and stability suffered by near-surface NV centers using suitable chemical surface termination. However, approaches that also enable robust control over adsorbed molecule density, orientation, and binding configuration are needed. We demonstrate a diamond surface preparation for mixed nitrogen- and oxygen-termination that simu…
We present an ab-initio calculation of the electronic affinity of the hypothetical C-46 clathrate by studying its bare and hydrogenated (100) surfaces. We show that such a system shares with the diamond phase a small electronic affinity. Further, contrary to the diamond phase, the possibility of doping endohedrally these cage-like systems allows to significantly raise the position of the Fermi level, resulting in a true metal with a small work function. This is illustrated in the case of the Li8@C-46 doped compound. Such a class of materials might be of much interest for the design of electron…
Barcode magnetic nanowires typically comprise a multilayer magnetic structure in a single body with more than one segment type. Interestingly, owing to selective functionalization and novel interactions between the layers, barcode magnetic nanowires have attracted significant attention, particularly in the field of bioengineering. However, an analysis of their magnetic properties at the individual nanowire level remains challenging. With this background, herein, we investigated the characterization of magnetic nanowires at room temperature under ambient conditions based on magnetic images obta…
This work explores the application of a new one-dimensional carbon nanomaterial, the diamond nanothread (DNT), as a reinforcement for nanocomposites. Owing to the existence of Stone-Wales transformation defects, the DNT intrinsically possesses irregular surfaces, which is expected to enhance the non-covalent interfacial load transfer. Through a series of in silico pull-out studies of the DNT in polyethylene (PE) matrix, we found that the load transfer between DNT and PE matrix is dominated by the non-covalent interactions, in particular the van der Waals interactions. Although the hydrogenated…
The effects of edge chemistry on the relative stability and electronic properties of zigzag boron nitride nanoribbons (ZBNNRs) are investigated. Among all functional groups considered, fully hydroxylated ZBNNRs are found to be the most energetically stable. When an in-plane external electric field is applied perpendicular to the axis of both hydrogenated and hydroxylated ZBNNRs, a spin-polarized half-metallic state is induced, whose character is different than that predicted for ZGNRs. The onset field for achieving the half-metallic state is found to mainly depend on the width of the ribbon. O…

Diamond materials are central to an increasing range of advanced technological demonstrations, from high power electronics, to nano-scale quantum bio-imaging with unprecedented sensitivity. However, the full exploitation of diamond for these applications is often limited by the uncontrolled nature of the diamond material surface, which suffers from Fermi-level pinning and hosts a significant density of electro-magnetic noise sources. These issues occur despite the oxide-free and air-stable nature of the diamond crystal surface, which should be an ideal candidate for functionalization and chemi…
Diamond, a well-known wide-bandgap insulator, becomes a low-temperature superconductor upon substitutional doping of carbon with boron. However, limited boron solubility and significant lattice disorder introduced by boron doping prevent attaining the theoretically-predicted high-temperature superconductivity. Here we present an alternative co-doping approach, based on the combination of ionic gating and boron substitution, in hydrogenated thin films epitaxially grown on (111)- and (110)-oriented single crystals. Gate-dependent electric transport measurements show that the effect of boron dopi…
