The addition formulae for KP $τ$-functions, when evaluated at lattice points in the KP flow group orbits in the infinite dimensional Sato-Segal-Wilson Grassmannian, give infinite parametric families of solutions to discretizations of the KP hierarchy. The CKP hierarchy may similarly be viewed as commuting flows on the Lagrangian sub-Grassmannian of maximal isotropic subspaces with respect to a suitably defined symplectic form. Evaluating the $τ$-functions at a sublattice of points within the KP orbit, the resulting discretization gives solutions both to the hyperdeterminantal relations (or Kashaev recurrence) and the hexahedron (or Kenyon-Pemantle) recurrence.
The degeneration of the hyperelliptic sigma function is studied. We use the Sato Grassmannian for this purpose. A simple decomposition of a rational function gives a decomposition of Plücker coordinates of a frame of the Sato Grassmannian. It then gives a decomposition of the tau function corresponding to the degeneration of a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$ in terms of the tau functions corresponding to a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g-1$. Since the tau functions are described by sigma functions, we get the corresponding formula for the degenerate hyperelliptic sigma function.
A classical way to introduce tau functions for integrable hierarchies of solitonic equations is by means of the Sato-Segal-Wilson infinite-dimensional Grassmannian. Every point in the Grassmannian is naturally related to a Riemann-Hilbert problem on the unit circle, for which Bertola proposed a tau function that generalizes the Jimbo-Miwa-Ueno tau function for isomonodromic deformation problems. In this paper, we prove that the Sato-Segal-Wilson tau function and the (generalized) Jimbo-Miwa-Ueno isomonodromy tau function coincide under a very general setting, by identifying each of them to the…
Motivated by quantum field theoretic partition functions that can be expressed as products of tau functions of the KP hierarchy we attach several types of local geometric Langlands parameters to quivers in the Sato Grassmannian. We study related questions of Virasoro constraints, of moduli spaces of relevant quivers, and of classical limits of the Langlands parameters.
Based on the work of Itzykson and Zuber on Kontsevich's integrals, we give a geometric interpretation and a simple proof of Zhou's explicit formula for the Witten-Kontsevich tau function. More precisely, we show that the numbers $A_{m,n}^{Zhou}$ defined by Zhou coincide with the affine coordinates for the point of the Sato Grassmannian corresponding to the Witten-Kontsevich tau function. Generating functions and new recursion relations for $A_{m,n}^{Zhou}$ are derived. Our formulation on matrix-valued affine coordinates and on tau functions remains valid for generic Grassmannian solutions of t…
A set of functions is introduced which generalizes the famous Schur polynomials and their connection to Grasmannian manifolds. These functions are shown to provide a new method of constructing solutions to the KP hierarchy of nonlinear partial differential equations. Specifically, just as the Schur polynomials are used to expand tau-functions as a sum, it is shown that it is natural to expand a quotient of tau-functions in terms of these generalized Schur functions. The coefficients in this expansion are found to be constrained by the Plücker relations of a grassmannian.
Israel M. Gelfand gave a geometric interpretation for general hypergeometric functions as sections of the tautological bundle over a complex Grassmannian $G_{k,n}$. In particular, the beta function can be understood in terms of $G_{2,3}$. In this manuscript, we construct one of the simplest generalizations of the Euler beta function by adding arbitrary-many odd variables to the classical setting. We also relate the beta super-function to the gamma and the hypergeometric function.
Algebraic and geometric structures associated with Birkhoff strata of Sato Grassmannian are analyzed. It is shown that each Birkhoff stratum $Σ_S$ contains a subset $W_{\hat{S}}$ of points for which each fiber of the corresponding tautological subbundle $TB_{W_S}$ is closed with respect to multiplication. Algebraically $TB_{W_S}$ is an infinite family of infinite-dimensional commutative associative algebras and geometrically it is an infinite tower of families of algebraic curves. For the big cell the subbundle $TB_{W_\varnothing}$ represents the tower of families of normal rational (Veronese)…
Sato theory provides a correspondence between solutions to the KP hierarchy and points in an infinite dimensional Grassmannian. In this correspondence, flows generated infinitesimally by powers of the ``shift'' operator give time dependence to the first coordinate of an arbitrarily selected point, making it a tau-function. These tau-functions satisfy a number of integrable equations, including the Hirota Bilinear Difference Equation (HBDE). Here, we rederive the HBDE as a statement about linear maps between Grassmannians. In addition to illustrating the fundamental nature of this equation in t…
We introduce the class of controlled Loewner-Kufarev equations and consider aspects of their algebraic nature. We lift the solution of such a controlled equation to the (Sato)-Segal-Wilson Grassmannian, and discuss its relation with the tau-function. We briefly highlight relations of the Grunsky matrix with integrable systems and conformal field theory. Our main result is the explicit formula which expresses the solution of the controlled equation in terms of the signature of the driving function through the action of words in generators of the Witt algebra.
For an arbitrary solution to the Burgers--KdV hierarchy, we define the tau-tuple $(τ_1,τ_2)$ of the solution. We show that the product $τ_1τ_2$ admits Buryak's residue formula. Therefore, according to Alexandrov's theorem, $τ_1τ_2$ is a tau-function of the KP hierarchy. We then derive a formula for the affine coordinates for the point of the Sato Grassmannian corresponding to the tau-function $τ_1τ_2$ explicitly in terms of those for $τ_1$. Applications to the analogous open extension of the generalized BGW tau-function and to the open partition function are given.
The partition functions of Hermitian one-matrix models are known to be tau-functions of the KP hierarchy. In this paper we explicitly compute the elements in Sato grassmannian these tau-functions correspond to, and use them to compute the $n$-point functions of Hermitian one-matrix model.
In Alexandrov's work \cite{al2, al3} it has been shown that the extended partition function $\exp(F^{o,ext}+F^c)$ introduced by Buryak in \cite{bu, bu2} is a tau-function of the KP hierarchy. In this work, we compute the affine coordinates of this tau-function on the Sato Grassmannian, and rewrite the Virasoro constraints as recursions for the affine coordinates in the fermionic picture. As applications we derive some formulas for the extended partition function and the connected $n$-point functions using methods developed by Zhou in \cite{zhou1} based on the boson-fermion correspondence.
We develop the theory of CKP hierarchy introduced in the papers of Kyoto school [Date E., Jimbo M., Kashiwara M., Miwa T., J. Phys. Soc. Japan 50 (1981), 3806-3812] (see also [Kac V.G., van de Leur J.W., Adv. Ser. Math. Phys., Vol. 7, World Sci. Publ., Teaneck, NJ, 1989, 369-406]). We present appropriate bosonization formulae. We show that in the context of the CKP theory certain orthogonal polynomials appear. These polynomials are polynomial both in even and odd (in Grassmannian sense) variables.
In this paper, we prove that the generalized Brézin-Gross-Witten tau-function is a hypergeometric solution of the BKP hierarchy with simple weight generating function. We claim that it describes a spin version of the strictly monotone Hurwitz numbers. A family of the hypergeometric tau-functions of the BKP hierarchy, corresponding to the rational weight generating functions, is investigated. In particular, the cut-and-join operators are constructed, and the explicit description of the BKP Sato Grassmannian points is derived. Representatives of this family can be associated with interesting fam…
Several features of an analytic (infinite-dimensional) Grassmannian of (commensurable) subspaces of a Hilbert space were developed in the context of integrable PDEs (KP hierarchy). We extended some of those features when polarized separable Hilbert spaces are generalized to a class of polarized Hilbert modules, in particular the Baker and tau-functions, which become operator-valued. Following from Part I we produce a pre-determinant structure for a class of tau-functions defined in the setting of the similarity class of projections of a certain Banach *-algebra. This structure is explicitly de…
We use a Grassmannian framework to define multi-component tau functions as expectation values of certain multi-component Fermi operators satisfying simple bilinear commutation relations on Clifford algebra. The tau functions contain both positive and negative flows and are shown to satisfy the $2n$-component KP hierarchy. The hierarchy equations can be formulated in terms of pseudo-differential equations for $n \times n$ matrix wave functions derived in terms of tau functions. These equations are cast in form of Sato-Wilson relations. A reduction process leads to the AKNS, two-component Camass…
Coprimeness property was introduced to study the singularity structure of discrete dynamical systems. In this paper we shall extend the coprimeness property and the Laurent property to further investigate discrete equations with complicated pattern of singularities. As examples we study extensions to the Somos-$4$ recurrence and the two-dimensional discrete Toda equation. By considering their non-autonomous polynomial forms, we prove that their tau function analogues possess the extended Laurent property with respect to their initial variables and some extra factors related to the non-autonomo…
In this work we study the tau-function $Z^{1D}$ of the KP hierarchy specified by the topological 1D gravity. As an application, we present two types of algorithms to compute the orbifold Euler characteristics of $\overline{\mathcal M}_{g,n}$. The first is to use (fat or thin) topological recursion formulas emerging from the Virasoro constraints for $Z^{1D}$; and the second is to use a formula for the connected $n$-point functions of a KP tau-function in terms of its affine coordinates on the Sato Grassmannian. This is a sequel to an earlier work.
We revisit the MIC-harmonic oscillator in flat space with monopole interaction and derive the polynomial algebra satisfied by the integrals of motion and its energy spectrum using the ad hoc recurrence approach. We introduce a superintegrable monopole system in generalized Taub-NUT space. The Schrödinger equation of this model is solved in spherical coordinates in the framework of Stäckel transformation. It is shown that wave functions of the quantum system can be expressed in terms of the product of Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials. We construct ladder and shift operators based on the correspo…
We study solutions to the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation whose underlying algebraic curves undergo tropical degenerations. Riemann's theta function becomes a finite exponential sum that is supported on a Delaunay polytope. We introduce the Hirota variety which parametrizes all tau functions arising from such a sum. We compute tau functions from points on the Sato Grassmannian that represent Riemann-Roch spaces and we present an algorithm that finds a soliton solution from a rational nodal curve.
We propose a method for computing any Gelfand-Dickey tau function living in Segal-Wilson Grassmannian as the asymptotics of block Toeplitz determinant associated to a certain class of symbols. Also truncated block Toeplitz determinants associated to the same symbols are shown to be tau function for rational reductions of KP. Connection with Riemann-Hilbert problems is investigated both from the point of view of integrable systems and block Toeplitz operator theory. Examples of applications to algebro-geometric solutions are given.
In this paper we investigate the tau-functions for the stationary sector of Gromov-Witten theory of the complex projective line and its version, relative to one point. In particular, we construct the integral representation for the points of the Sato Grassmannians, Kac-Schwarz operators, and quantum spectral curves. This allows us to derive the matrix models.
The goal of the present paper is to calculate the determinant of the Dirac operator with a mass in the cylindrical geometry. The domain of this operator consists of functions that realize a unitary one-dimensional representation of the fundamental group of the cylinder with $n$ marked points. The determinant represents a version of the isomonodromic $τ$-function, itroduced by M. Sato, T. Miwa and M. Jimbo. It is calculated by comparison of two sections of the $\mathrm{det}^*$-bundle over an infinite-dimensional grassmannian. The latter is composed of the spaces of boundary values of some local…
First we introduce the two tau-functions which appeared either as the $τ$-function of the integrable hierarchy governing the Riemann mapping of Jordan curves or in conformal field theory and the universal Grassmannian. Then we discuss various aspects of their interrelation. Subsequently, we establish a novel connection between free probability, growth models and integrable systems, in particular for second order freeness, and summarise it in a dictionary. This extends the previous link between conformal maps and large $N$-matrix integrals to (higher) order free probability. Within this context…
Using a Jacobi-Trudi-type identity, we show that the scalar product of a general state and a Bethe eigenstate in a finite-length XXZ spin-1/2 chain is (a restriction of) a KP tau function. This leads to a correspondence between the eigenstates and points on Sato's Grassmannian. Each of these points is a function of the rapidities of the corresponding eigenstate, the inhomogeneity variables of the spin chain and the crossing parameter.
In this paper we introduce a new family of the KP tau-functions. This family can be described by a deformation of the generalized Kontsevich matrix model. We prove that the simplest representative of this family describes a generating function of the cubic Hodge integrals satisfying the Calabi-Yau condition, and claim that the whole family describes its generalization for the higher spin cases. To investigate this family we construct a new description of the Sato Grassmannian in terms of a canonical pair of the Kac-Schwarz operators.
The subject of this paper is a connection between d-orthogonal polynomials and the Toda lattice hierarchy. In more details we consider some polynomial systems similar to Hermite polynomials, but satisfying $d+2$-term recurrence relation, $d >1$. Any such polynomial system defines a solution of the Toda lattice hierarchy. However we impose also the condition that the polynomials are also eigenfunctions of a differential operator, i.e. a bispectral problem. This leads to a solution of the Toda lattice hierarchy, enjoying a number of special properties. In particular the corresponding tau-functio…
We study the cumulants and their generating functions of the probability distributions of the conductance, shot noise and Wigner delay time in ballistic quantum dots. Our approach is based on the integrable theory of certain matrix integrals and applies to all the symmetry classes beta=1,2,4 of Random Matrix Theory. We compute the weak localization corrections to the mixed cumulants of the conductance and shot noise for beta=1,4, thus proving a number of conjectures of Khoruzhenko et al. (Phys. Rev. B, Vol. 80 (2009), 125301). We derive differential equations that characterize the cumulant gen…
In this article, we consider the generalised two-parameter Cauchy two-matrix model and corresponding integrable lattice equation. It is shown that with parameters chosen as $1/k_i$ when $k_i\in\mathbb{Z}_{>0}$ ($i=1,\,2$), the average characteristic polynomials admit $(k_1+k_2+2)$-term recurrence relations, which provide us spectral problems for integrable lattices. The tau function is then given by the partition function of the generalised Cauchy two-matrix model as well as Gram determinant. The simplest example with exact solvability is demonstrated.
We introduce and study a family of quantum fields, associated to delta-interactions in one dimension. These fields are analogous to holonomic quantum fields of M. Sato, T. Miwa and M. Jimbo. Corresponding field operators belong to an infinite-dimensional representation of the group $SL(2,\Rb)$ in the Fock space of ordinary harmonic oscillator. We compute form factors of such fields and their correlation functions, which are related to the determinants of Schroedinger operators with a finite number of point interactions. It is also shown that these determinants coincide with tau functions, obta…
An element [Φ] of the Grassmannian of n-dimensional subspaces of the Hardy space H^2, extended over the field C(x_1,..., x_n), may be associated to any polynomial basis ϕ for C(x). The Plücker coordinates S^ϕ_{λ,n}(x_1,..., x_n) of Φ, labelled by partitions λ, provide an analog of Jacobi's bi-alternant formula, defining a generalization of Schur polynomials. Applying the recursion relations satisfied by the polynomial system to the analog of the complete symmetric functions generates a doubly infinite matrix of symmetric polynomials that determine an element [H] of the Grassmannian. This is sh…
