We present two complementary NuSTAR x-ray searches for keV-scale dark matter decaying to mono-energetic photons in the Milky Way halo. In the first, we utilize the known intensity pattern of unfocused stray light across the detector planes -- the dominant source of photons from diffuse sources -- to separate astrophysical emission from internal instrument backgrounds using ${\sim}$7-Ms/detector deep blank-sky exposures. In the second, we present an updated parametric model of the full NuSTAR instrument background, allowing us to leverage the statistical power of an independent ${\sim}$20-Ms/detector stacked exposures spread across the sky. Finding no evidence of anomalous x-ray lines using either method, we set limits on the active-sterile mixing angle $\sin^2(2θ)$ for sterile-neutrino masses 6--40 keV. The first key result is that we strongly disfavor a ${\sim}$7-keV sterile neutrino decaying into a 3.5-keV photon. The second is that we derive leading limits on sterile neutrinos with masses ${\sim}$15--18 keV and ${\sim}$25--40 keV, reaching or extending below the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis limit. In combination with previous results, the parameter space for the Neutrino Minimal Standard Model ($ν$MSM) is now nearly closed.
We present the results of the search for decaying dark matter with particle mass in the 6-40 keV range with NuSTAR deep observations of COSMOS and ECDFS empty sky fields. We show that main contribution to the decaying dark matter signal from the Milky Way galaxy comes through the aperture of the NuSTAR detector, rather than through the focusing optics. High sensitivity of the NuSTAR detector, combined with the large aperture and large exposure times of the two observation fields allow us to improve previously existing constraints on the dark matter decay time by up to an order of magnitude in …
We present measurements of the intensity of the Cosmic X-ray Background (CXB) with the NuSTAR telescope in the 3-20 keV energy range. Our method uses spatial modulation of the CXB signal on the NuSTAR detectors through the telescope's side aperture. Based on the NuSTAR observations of selected extragalactic fields with a total exposure of 7 Ms, we have estimated the CXB 3-20 keV flux to be 2.8E-11 erg/s/cm^2/deg^2, which is ~8 higher than measured with HEAO-1 and consistent with the INTEGRAL measurement. The inferred CXB spectral shape in the 3-20 keV energy band is consistent with the canonic…
We analyze two dedicated NuSTAR observations with exposure ${\sim}190$ ks located ${\sim}10^\circ$ from the Galactic plane, one above and the other below, to search for x-ray lines from the radiative decay of sterile-neutrino dark matter. These fields were chosen to minimize astrophysical x-ray backgrounds while remaining near the densest region of the dark matter halo. We find no evidence of anomalous x-ray lines in the energy range 5--20 keV, corresponding to sterile neutrino masses 10--40 keV. Interpreted in the context of sterile neutrinos produced via neutrino mixing, these observations p…
We report on the detection of excess hard X-ray emission from the TeV BL Lac object Mrk421 during the historical low-flux state of the source in January 2013. NuSTAR observations were conducted four times between MJD56294 and MJD56312 with a total exposure of 80.9 ksec. The source flux in the 3-40 keV range was nearly constant except for MJD56307, when the average flux level increased by a factor of three. Throughout the exposure, the X-ray spectra of Mrk421 were well represented by a steep power-law model with a photon index of 3.1, although a significant excess was noted above 20 keV in the …
We present a catalog of hard X-ray sources in a square-degree region surveyed by NuSTAR in the direction of the Norma spiral arm. This survey has a total exposure time of 1.7 Ms, and typical and maximum exposure depths of 50 ks and 1 Ms, respectively. In the area of deepest coverage, sensitivity limits of $5\times10^{-14}$ and $4\times10^{-14}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ in the 3-10 and 10-20 keV bands, respectively, are reached. Twenty-eight sources are firmly detected and ten are detected with low significance; eight of the 38 sources are expected to be active galactic nuclei. The three brightes…
MCG-5-23-16 was targeted in early 2015 with a half mega-seconds observing campaign using NuSTAR. Here we present the spectral analysis of these datasets along with an earlier observation and study the relativistic reflection and the primary coronal source. The data show strong reflection features in the form of both narrow and broad iron lines plus a Compton reflection hump. A cutoff energy is significantly detected in all exposures. The shape of the reflection spectrum does not change in the two years spanned by the observations, suggesting a stable geometry. A strong positive correlation is …
We present the first survey results of hard X-ray point sources in the Galactic Center (GC) region by NuSTAR. We have discovered 70 hard (3-79 keV) X-ray point sources in a 0.6 deg^2 region around Sgr A* with a total exposure of 1.7 Ms, and 7 sources in the Sgr B2 field with 300 ks. We identify clear Chandra counterparts for 58 NuSTAR sources and assign candidate counterparts for the remaining 19. The NuSTAR survey reaches X-ray luminosities of ~4 x and ~8 x 10^32 erg s^-1 at the GC (8 kpc) in the 3-10 and 10-40 keV bands, respectively. The source list includes three persistent luminous X-ray …
The high-mass X-ray binary and accreting X-ray pulsar IGR J16393-4643 was observed by NuSTAR in the 3-79 keV energy band for a net exposure time of 50 ks. We present the results of this observation which enabled the discovery of a cyclotron resonant scattering feature with a centroid energy of 29.3(+1.1/-1.3) keV. This allowed us to measure the magnetic field strength of the neutron star for the first time: B = (2.5+/-0.1)e12 G. The known pulsation period is now observed at 904.0+/-0.1 s. Since 2006, the neutron star has undergone a long-term spin-up trend at a rate of P' = -2e-8 s/s (-0.6 s p…
We present the $NuSTAR$ extragalactic survey of the $James$ $Webb$ $Space$ $Telescope$ ($JWST$) North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) Time-Domain Field. The survey covers a $\sim$0.16 deg$^2$ area with a total exposure of 681 ks acquired in a total of nine observations from three epochs. The survey sensitivities at 20% of the area are 2.39, 1.14, 2.76, 1.52, and 5.20 $\times$ 10$^{-14}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in the 3-24, 3-8, 8-24, 8-16, and 16-24 keV bands, respectively. The NEP survey is one of the most sensitive extragalactic surveys with $NuSTAR$ so far. A total of 33 sources were detected above 95% …
To provide the census of the sources contributing to the X-ray background peak above 10 keV, NuSTAR is performing extragalactic surveys using a three-tier "wedding cake" approach. We present the NuSTAR survey of the COSMOS field, the medium sensitivity and medium area tier, covering 1.7 deg2 and overlapping with both Chandra and XMM-Newton data. This survey consists of 121 observations for a total exposure of ~3 Ms. To fully exploit these data, we developed a new detection strategy, carefully tested through extensive simulations. The survey sensitivity at 20% completeness is 5.9, 2.9 and 6.4 x…
Understanding the origin of the flaring activity from the Galactic center supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A*, is a major scientific goal of the NuSTAR Galactic plane survey campaign. We report on the data obtained between July 2012 and April 2015, including 27 observations on Sgr A* with a total exposure of ~ 1 Ms. We found a total of ten X-ray flares detected in the NuSTAR observation window, with luminosities in the range of $L_{3-79~keV}$~$(0.2-4.0) \times 10^{35}~erg~s^{-1}$. With this largest hard X-ray Sgr A* flare dataset to date, we studied the flare spectral properties. Seven fla…
We present a source catalog from the first deep hard X-ray ($E>10$ keV) survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), the NuSTAR Legacy Survey of the SMC. We observed three fields, for a total exposure time of 1 Ms, along the bar of this nearby star-forming galaxy. Fields were chosen for their young stellar and accreting binary populations. We detected 10 sources above a 3$σ$ significance level (4$-$25 keV) and obtained upper limits on an additional 40 sources. We reached a 3$σ$ limiting luminosity in the 4$-$25 keV band of $\sim$ $10^{35}$ erg s$^{-1}$, allowing us to probe fainter X-ray binary…
X-ray observations play a crucial role in understanding the emission mechanism and relevant physical phenomena of magnetars. We report X-ray observations of a young magnetar SGR 1900+14 made in 2016, which is famous for a giant flare in 1998 August. Simultaneous observations were conducted with XMM-Newton and NuSTAR on 2016 October 20 with 23 and 123 ks exposures, respectively. The NuSTAR hard X-ray coverage enabled us to detect the source up to 70 keV. The 1-10 keV and 15-60 keV fluxes were $3.11(3)\times10^{-12}\;{\rm erg\;s^{-1}\;cm^{-2}}$ and $6.8(3)\times10^{-12}\;{\rm erg\;s^{-1}\;cm^{-2…
The soft X-ray band of many active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is affected by obscuration due to partially ionised matter crossing our line of sight. In this context, two past XMM-Newton observations (6 months apart) and a simultaneous NuSTAR-Swift ($\sim$8 years later) exposure of the Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxy 1E 0754.6+392.8 revealed an intense and variable WA and hints of additional absorbers in the Fe K$α$ band. We present the first X-ray characterisation of this AGN discussing its broadband (0.3-79 keV) spectrum and temporal properties. We conduct a temporal and spectroscopic analysis on tw…
We present the first full catalog and science results for the NuSTAR serendipitous survey. The catalog incorporates data taken during the first 40 months of NuSTAR operation, which provide ~20Ms of effective exposure time over 331 fields, with an areal coverage of 13 sq deg, and 497 sources detected in total over the 3-24 keV energy range. There are 276 sources with spectroscopic redshifts and classifications, largely resulting from our extensive campaign of ground-based spectroscopic followup. We characterize the overall sample in terms of the X-ray, optical, and infrared source properties. T…
[Abridged] We investigated the X-ray characteristics of the Class I YSO Elias 29 with joint XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations of 300 ks and 450 ks, respectively. These are the first observations of a very young (<1 Myr) stellar object in a band encompassing simultaneously both soft and hard X-rays. In addition to the hot Fe complex at 6.7 keV, we observed fluorescent emission from Fe at $\sim6.4$ keV, confirming the previous findings. The line at 6.4 keV is detected during quiescent and flaring states and its flux is variable. The equivalent width is found varying in the $\approx 0.15--0.5$ k…
We report X-ray observations of the High Mass X-ray Binary (HMXB) pulsar 4U 1907+09. Spectral and Timing analysis of the source has been performed using NuSTAR observation. Timing analysis of the photon events revealed the coherent X-ray pulsation of the source with a pulse period of $442.92\;\pm\;0.03$ s. It is observed that the source is spinning down at a rate of $0.1971(4) s yr^{-1}$. The pulse profile is characterized by a decaying amplitude of the secondary peak and relative growth in the amplitude of the primary peak with an increase in energy. The broad-band spectral coverage of NuSTAR…
We performed a detailed broadband spectral and timing analysis of a small flaring event of ~120 ks in a narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051 using simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations. The ~300 ks long NuSTAR observation and the overlapping XMM-Newton exposure were segregated into pre-flare, flare, and post-flare segments. During the flare, the NuSTAR count rate peaked at 2.5 times the mean count rate before the flare. Using various physical and phenomenological models, we examined the 0.3-50 keV X-ray spectrum, which consists of a primary continuum, reprocessed emission, warm abso…
We present the evolution of the X-ray emission properties of the magnetar 1E 1547.0-5408 since February 2004 over a time period covering three outbursts. We analyzed new and archival observations taken with the Swift, NuSTAR, Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray satellites. The source has been observed at a relatively steady soft X-ray flux of $\approx$ 10$^{-11}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (0.3-10 keV) over the last 9 years, which is about an order of magnitude fainter than the flux at the peak of the last outburst in 2009, but a factor of $\sim$ 30 larger than the level in 2006. The broad-band spectrum …
High-resolution X-ray spectrometers onboard suborbital sounding rockets can search for dark matter candidates that produce X-ray lines, such as decaying keV-scale sterile neutrinos. Even with exposure times and effective areas far smaller than XMM-Newton and Chandra observations, high-resolution, wide field-of-view observations with sounding rockets have competitive sensitivity to decaying sterile neutrinos. We analyze a subset of the 2011 observation by the X-ray Quantum Calorimeter instrument centered on Galactic coordinates l = 165, b = -5 with an effective exposure of 106 seconds, obtainin…
