The soft X-ray band of many active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is affected by obscuration due to partially ionised matter crossing our line of sight. In this context, two past XMM-Newton observations (6 months apart) and a simultaneous NuSTAR-Swift ($\sim$8 years later) exposure of the Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxy 1E 0754.6+392.8 revealed an intense and variable WA and hints of additional absorbers in the Fe K$α$ band. We present the first X-ray characterisation of this AGN discussing its broadband (0.3-79 keV) spectrum and temporal properties. We conduct a temporal and spectroscopic analysis on two $\sim$10 ks (net exposure) XMM-Newton snapshots performed in April and October 2006. We also study the high energy behaviour of 1E 0754.6+392.8 modelling its broadband spectrum using simultaneous Swift-NuSTAR data. Both phenomenological and physically motivated models are tested. We find the presence of flux variability ($\sim$150% and 30% for 0.3-2 and 2-10 keV bands, respectively) and spectral changes at months timescales ($ΔΓ\sim$0.4). A reflection component that is consistent with being constant over years and arising from relatively cold material far from the central super massive black hole is detected. The main spectral feature shaping the 1E 0754.6+392.8 spectrum is a warm absorber. Such a component is persistent over the years and variability of its ionisation and column density is observed down on months in the ranges 3$\times10^{22} \rm cm^{-2}\lesssim$ N$_{\rm{H}}\lesssim7.2\times10^{22} \rm cm^{-2}$ and 1.5 $\lesssim\log(ξ/{\rm erg~s^{-1}~cm})\lesssim$2.1. Despite the short exposures, we find possible evidence of two additional highly ionised and high-velocity outflow components in absorption. Longer exposures are mandatory in order to characterise the complex outflow in this AGN.
We present the results of a systematic, broadband X-ray spectral analysis of nearby active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with the X-ray clumpy torus model (XCLUMPY; Tanimoto et al. 2019). By adding 16 AGNs newly analyzed in this paper, we study total 28 AGNs including unabsorbed and absorbed AGNs taken from Ichikawa et al. (2015) and García-Bernete et al. (2019). This is the largest sample whose X-ray and infrared spectra are analyzed by the clumpy torus models XCLUMPY and CLUMPY (Nenkova et al. 2008), respectively. The relation between the Eddington ratio and the torus covering factor determined fro…
Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) is one of the few classes of active galactic nuclei (AGN) harboring powerful relativistic jets and detected in $γ$ rays. NLS1s are well-known X-ray sources. While in non-jetted sources the origin of this X-ray emission may be a hot corona surrounding the accretion disk, in jetted objects, especially beamed ones, the contribution of corona and relativistic jet is difficult to disentangle without a proper sampling of the hard X-ray emission. For this reason, we observed with \textit{NuSTAR} the first four NLS1s detected at high energy $γ$ rays. These data, …
In modeling the X-ray spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), the inclination angle is a parameter that can play an important role in analyzing the X-ray spectra of AGN, but it has never been studied in detail. We present a broadband X-ray spectral analysis of the joint NuSTAR-XMM-Newton observations of 13 sources with [OIII] measured inclinations determined by Fischer et al. 2013. By freezing the inclination angles at the [OIII] measured values when modeling the observations, the spectra are well fitted and the geometrical properties of the obscuring structure of the AGNs are slightly bette…
The basic unified model of active galactic nuclei (AGN) invokes an anisotropic obscuring structure, usually referred to as a torus, to explain AGN obscuration as an angle-dependent effect. We present a new grid of X-ray spectral templates based on radiative transfer calculations in neutral gas in an approximately toroidal geometry, appropriate for CCD-resolution X-ray spectra (FWHM > 130 eV). Fitting the templates to broadband X-ray spectra of AGN provides constraints on two important geometrical parameters of the gas distribution around the supermassive black hole: the average column density …
We present a time-resolved X-ray spectral study of the high energy peaked blazar Mkn 421 using simultaneous broadband observations from the LAXPC and SXT instruments on-board AstroSat. The ~ 400 ksec long observation taken during 3-8 January, 2017 was divided into segments of 10 ksecs. Each segment was fitted using synchrotron emission from particles whose energy distribution was represented by a log-parabola model. We also considered particle energy distribution models where (i) the radiative cooling leads to a maximum energy (ξ max model), (ii) the system has energy dependent diffusion (EDD)…
MSH 11-62 (G291.1-0.9) is a composite supernova remnant for which radio and X-ray observations have identified the remnant shell as well as its central pulsar wind nebula. The observations suggest a relatively young system expanding into a low density region. Here we present a study of MSH 11-62 using observations with the Chandra, XMM-Newton, and Fermi observatories, along with radio observations from the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). We identify a compact X-ray source that appears to be the putative pulsar that powers the nebula, and show that the X-ray spectrum of the nebula bea…
We present a broadband spectral study of the radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy 1H~0323+342 based on multi-epoch observations performed with NuSTAR on 2014 March 15, and two simultaneous observations performed with Suzaku and Swift on 2009 July 26 and 2013 March 1. We found the presence of a strong soft X-ray excess emission, a broad but weak Fe line and hard X-ray excess emission. We used the blurred reflection (relxill) and the intrinsic disc Comptonization (optxagnf), two physically motivated models, to describe the broadband spectra and to disentangle the disk/corona and jet emission.…
We report the broadband X-ray spectra of the ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) UGC 5101 in the 0.25-100 keV band observed with Swift/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT), NuSTAR, Suzaku, XMM-Newton, and Chandra. A Compton-thick AGN obscured with a hydrogen column density of $\approx 1.3\times10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$ is detected above 10 keV. A spectral fit with a numerical torus model favors a large half opening angle of the torus, $>41$ degrees, suggesting that the covering fraction of material heavily obscuring the X-ray source is moderate. The intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosity is determined to be $\appro…
We present the results of our study of the X-ray spectrum for the source X-6 in the nearby galaxy M33 obtained for the first time at energies above 10 keV from the data of the NuSTAR orbital telescope. The archival Swift-XRT data for energy coverage below 3 keV have been used, which has allowed the spectrum of M33 X-6 to be constructed in the wide energy range 0.3-20 keV. The spectrum of the source is well described by the model of an optically and geometrically thick accretion disk with a maximum temperature of ~2 keV and an inner radius of ~5 cos^{-1/2}(theta) km (where "theta" is the unknow…
We present results from the coordinated broadband X-ray observations of the extreme ultraluminous X-ray source Holmberg IX X-1 performed by NuSTAR, XMM-Newton and Suzaku in late 2012. These observations provide the first high-quality spectra of Holmberg IX X-1 above 10 keV to date, extending the X-ray coverage of this remarkable source up to ~30 keV. Broadband observations were undertaken at two epochs, between which Holmberg IX X-1 exhibited both flux and strong spectral variability, increasing in luminosity from Lx = (1.90+/-0.03)e40 erg/s to Lx = (3.35+/-0.03)e40 erg/s. Neither epoch exhibi…
We have analyzed the broadband X-ray spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in two "non-merging" luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) UGC 2608 and NGC 5135, utilizing the data of NuSTAR, Suzaku, XMM-Newton, and Chandra. Applying the X-ray clumpy-torus model (XCLUMPY: Tanimoto et al. 2019), we find that both sources have similar spectra characterized by Compton-thick (CT) absorption ($N_{\rm H} \sim$ 5-7 $\times$ $10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$) and small torus angular width ($σ$ $<$ 20$^{\circ}$). The intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosities are $3.9^{+2.2}_{-1.7}$ $\times$ $10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$ (UGC 2608) and $2…
We present a detailed, broadband X-ray spectral analysis of the ULX pulsar NGC 7793 P13, a known super-Eddington source, utilizing data from the $XMM$-$Newton$, $NuSTAR$ and $Chandra$ observatories. The broadband $XMM$-$Newton+NuSTAR$ spectrum of P13 is qualitatively similar to the rest of the ULX sample with broadband coverage, suggesting that additional ULXs in the known population may host neutron star accretors. Through time-averaged, phase-resolved and multi-epoch studies, we find that two non-pulsed thermal blackbody components with temperatures $\sim$0.5 and $\sim$1.5 keV are required t…
We present joint \textit{XMM-Newton} and \textit{NuSTAR} observations of the `bare' narrow line Seyfert 1 Ton S180 ($z=0.062$), carried out in 2016 and providing the first hard X-ray view of this luminous galaxy. We find that the 0.4--30 keV band cannot be self-consistently reproduced by relativistic reflection models, which fail to account simultaneously for the soft and hard X-ray emission. The smooth soft excess prefers extreme blurring parameters, confirmed by the nearly featureless nature of the RGS spectrum, while the moderately broad Fe K line and the modest hard excess above 10 keV app…
Blazars radiate from radio through gamma-ray frequencies thereby being ideal targets for multifrequency studies. Such studies allow constraining the properties of the emitting jet. 3C 279 is among the most notable blazars and therefore subject to extensive multifrequency campaigns. We report the results of a campaign ranging from near-IR to gamma-ray energies of an outburst of 3C 279 in June 2015. The overall spectral energy distribution from near-IR to gamma rays can be well represented by either a leptonic or a lepto-hadronic radiation transfer model. Even though the data are equally well re…
We study the nature of the changing-look Active Galactic Nucleus NGC 1566 during its June 2018 outburst. During the outburst, the X-ray intensity of the source rises up to ~25-30 times compared to its quiescent state intensity. We perform timing and spectral analysis of the source during pre-outburst, outburst, and post-outburst epochs using semi-simultaneous observations with the XMM-Newton, Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR), and Neil Gehrels Swift Observatories. We calculate variance, normalized variance, and fractional rms amplitude in different energy bands to study the variab…
We present results from a coordinated $XMM$-$Newton$+$NuSTAR$ observation of the type 1.8 Seyfert galaxy IRAS 13197-1627. This is a highly complex source, with strong contributions from relativistic reflection from the inner accretion disk, neutral absorption and further reprocessing by more distant material, and ionised absorption from an outflow. We undertake a detailed spectral analysis combining the broadband coverage provided by $XMM$-$Newton$+$NuSTAR$ with a multi-epoch approach incorporating archival observations performed by $XMM$-$Newton$ and $Suzaku$. Our focus is on characterising t…
We present the results of an extensive analysis of the optical, ultraviolet, X-ray and $γ$-ray data collected from the observations of the BL Lac objects prototype BL Lacertae carried out over a period of nearly 13 years, between August 2008 and March 2021. The source is characterized by strongly variable emission at all frequencies, often accompanied by spectral changes. In the $γ$-ray band several prominent flares have been detected, the largest one reaching the flux of $F_{\rm γ}(>196.7\: {\rm MeV})=(4.39\pm1.01)\times10^{-6}\:{\rm photon\:cm^{-2}\:s^{-1}}$. The X-ray spectral variability o…
The recently commissioned Compact Array Broadband Backend (CABB) on the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) provides 2 GHz bandwidth in each frequency and polarisation, significantly increasing the sensitivity of the Array. This increased sensitivity allows for larger samples of sources to be targeted whilst also probing fainter radio luminosities. Using CABB, we have observed a large sample of objects at 20 GHz to investigate the high-frequency radio luminosity distribution of X-ray selected QSOs at redshifts less than 1. Observing at high frequencies allows us to focus on the core emiss…
This study is focused on the observational measurement of the viewing angle of individual quasars by modeling the broadband quasar spectrum ranging from the infra-red (IR) to the soft X-ray band. Sources are selected from various published catalogs, and their broadband quasi-simultaneous spectral data points were collected and used to model. We started with a COSMOS sample of type-1 sources which have broadband photometric points. Then, to include more data points, we cross-matched the COSMOS with the SDSS DR14 quasar catalog, and eventually, we find 90 sources that have broadband data ranging…
The NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) Rotation Measure (RM) catalogue is invaluable for the study of cosmic magnetism. However, the RM values reported in it can be affected by n$π$-ambiguity, resulting in deviations of the reported RM from the true values by multiples of +-652.9 rad m-2. We therefore set off to observationally constrain the fraction of sources in the RM catalogue affected by this ambiguity. New broadband spectro-polarimetric observations were performed with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) at 1--2 GHz, with 23 n$π$-ambiguity candidates selected by their peculiarly high |RM| …
We present the results from coordinated X-ray observations of the ultraluminous X-ray source NGC 5204 X-1 performed by NuSTAR and XMM-Newton in early 2013. These observations provide the first detection of NGC 5204 X-1 above 10 keV, extending the broadband coverage to 0.3-20 keV. The observations were carried out in two epochs separated by approximately 10 days, and showed little spectral variation, with an observed luminosity of Lx = (4.95+/-0.11)e39 erg/s. The broadband spectrum confirms the presence of a clear spectral downturn above 10 keV seen in some previous observations. This cutoff is…
We perform a systematic X-ray spectroscopic analysis of 57 local ultra/luminous infrared galaxy systems (containing 84 individual galaxies) observed with Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array and/or Swift/BAT. Combining soft X-ray data obtained with Chandra, XMM-Newton, Suzaku and/or Swift/XRT, we identify 40 hard ($>$10 keV) X-ray detected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and constrain their torus parameters with the X-ray clumpy torus model XCLUMPY (Tanimoto et al. 2019). Among the AGNs at $z < 0.03$, for which sample biases are minimized, the fraction of Compton-thick ($N_{\rm H} \geq 10^{24}$…
The NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) Rotation Measure (RM) catalogue has enabled numerous studies in cosmic magnetism, and will continue being a unique dataset complementing future polarisation surveys. Robust comparisons with these new surveys will however require further understandings in the systematic effects present in the NVSS RM catalogue. In this paper, we make careful comparisons between our new on-axis broadband observations with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array and the NVSS RM results for 23 sources. We found that two unpolarised sources were reported as polarised at about 0.5% level i…
