Recently, Transformer-based methods, which predict polygon points or Bezier curve control points for localizing texts, are popular in scene text detection. However, these methods built upon detection transformer framework might achieve sub-optimal training efficiency and performance due to coarse positional query modeling. In addition, the point label form exploited in previous works implies the reading order of humans, which impedes the detection robustness from our observation. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a concise Dynamic Point Text DEtection TRansformer network, termed DPText-DETR. In detail, DPText-DETR directly leverages explicit point coordinates to generate position queries and dynamically updates them in a progressive way. Moreover, to improve the spatial inductive bias of non-local self-attention in Transformer, we present an Enhanced Factorized Self-Attention module which provides point queries within each instance with circular shape guidance. Furthermore, we design a simple yet effective positional label form to tackle the side effect of the previous form. To further evaluate the impact of different label forms on the detection robustness in real-world scenario, we establish an Inverse-Text test set containing 500 manually labeled images. Extensive experiments prove the high training efficiency, robustness, and state-of-the-art performance of our method on popular benchmarks. The code and the Inverse-Text test set are available at https://github.com/ymy-k/DPText-DETR.
Annotating bounding boxes for object detection is expensive, time-consuming, and error-prone. In this work, we propose a DETR based framework called ComplETR that is designed to explicitly complete missing annotations in partially annotated dense scene datasets. This reduces the need to annotate every object instance in the scene thereby reducing annotation cost. ComplETR augments object queries in DETR decoder with patch information of objects in the image. Combined with a matching loss, it can effectively find objects that are similar to the input patch and complete the missing annotations. …
Dynamic scene graph generation from a video is challenging due to the temporal dynamics of the scene and the inherent temporal fluctuations of predictions. We hypothesize that capturing long-term temporal dependencies is the key to effective generation of dynamic scene graphs. We propose to learn the long-term dependencies in a video by capturing the object-level consistency and inter-object relationship dynamics over object-level long-term tracklets using transformers. Experimental results demonstrate that our Dynamic Scene Graph Detection Transformer (DSG-DETR) outperforms state-of-the-art m…

Pedestrian detection in crowd scenes poses a challenging problem due to the heuristic defined mapping from anchors to pedestrians and the conflict between NMS and highly overlapped pedestrians. The recently proposed end-to-end detectors(ED), DETR and deformable DETR, replace hand designed components such as NMS and anchors using the transformer architecture, which gets rid of duplicate predictions by computing all pairwise interactions between queries. Inspired by these works, we explore their performance on crowd pedestrian detection. Surprisingly, compared to Faster-RCNN with FPN, the result…
The recently proposed end-to-end transformer detectors, such as DETR and Deformable DETR, have a cascade structure of stacking 6 decoder layers to update object queries iteratively, without which their performance degrades seriously. In this paper, we investigate that the random initialization of object containers, which include object queries and reference points, is mainly responsible for the requirement of multiple iterations. Based on our findings, we propose Efficient DETR, a simple and efficient pipeline for end-to-end object detection. By taking advantage of both dense detection and spa…
In this paper, we propose a multiple object tracker, called MF-Tracker, that integrates multiple classical features (spatial distances and colours) and modern features (detection labels and re-identification features) in its tracking framework. Since our tracker can work with detections coming either from unsupervised and supervised object detectors, we also investigated the impact of supervised and unsupervised detection inputs in our method and for tracking road users in general. We also compared our results with existing methods that were applied on the UA-Detrac and the UrbanTracker datase…
We address the issue of domain gap when making use of synthetic data to train a scene-specific object detector and pose estimator. While previous works have shown that the constraints of learning a scene-specific model can be leveraged to create geometrically and photometrically consistent synthetic data, care must be taken to design synthetic content which is as close as possible to the real-world data distribution. In this work, we propose to solve domain gap through the use of appearance randomization to generate a wide range of synthetic objects to span the space of realistic images for tr…

Detecting and tracking vehicles in urban scenes is a crucial step in many traffic-related applications as it helps to improve road user safety among other benefits. Various challenges remain unresolved in multi-object tracking (MOT) including target information description, long-term occlusions and fast motion. We propose a multi-vehicle detection and tracking system following the tracking-by-detection paradigm that tackles the previously mentioned challenges. Our MOT method extends an Intersection-over-Union (IOU)-based tracker with vehicle re-identification features. This allows us to utiliz…

Although DETR-based 3D detectors can simplify the detection pipeline and achieve direct sparse predictions, their performance still lags behind dense detectors with post-processing for 3D object detection from point clouds. DETRs usually adopt a larger number of queries than GTs (e.g., 300 queries v.s. 40 objects in Waymo) in a scene, which inevitably incur many false positives during inference. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective sparse 3D detector, named Query Contrast Voxel-DETR (ConQueR), to eliminate the challenging false positives, and achieve more accurate and sparser predi…

Semi-supervised Learning (SSL) has received increasing attention in autonomous driving to reduce the enormous burden of 3D annotation. In this paper, we propose UpCycling, a novel SSL framework for 3D object detection with zero additional raw-level point cloud: learning from unlabeled de-identified intermediate features (i.e., smashed data) to preserve privacy. Since these intermediate features are naturally produced by the inference pipeline, no additional computation is required on autonomous vehicles. However, generating effective consistency loss for unlabeled feature-level scene turns out…

Most models tasked to ground referential utterances in 2D and 3D scenes learn to select the referred object from a pool of object proposals provided by a pre-trained detector. This is limiting because an utterance may refer to visual entities at various levels of granularity, such as the chair, the leg of the chair, or the tip of the front leg of the chair, which may be missed by the detector. We propose a language grounding model that attends on the referential utterance and on the object proposal pool computed from a pre-trained detector to decode referenced objects with a detection head, wi…

Existing research addresses scene graph generation (SGG) -- a critical technology for scene understanding in images -- from a detection perspective, i.e., objects are detected using bounding boxes followed by prediction of their pairwise relationships. We argue that such a paradigm causes several problems that impede the progress of the field. For instance, bounding box-based labels in current datasets usually contain redundant classes like hairs, and leave out background information that is crucial to the understanding of context. In this work, we introduce panoptic scene graph generation (PS…
In remote sensing field, there are many applications of object detection in recent years, which demands a great number of labeled data. However, we may be faced with some cases where only limited data are available. In this paper, we proposed a few-shot object detector which is designed for detecting novel objects provided with only a few examples. Particularly, in order to fit the object detection settings, our proposed few-shot detector concentrates on the relations that lie in the level of objects instead of the full image with the assistance of Self-Adaptive Attention Network (SAAN). The S…

End-to-end text spotting aims to integrate scene text detection and recognition into a unified framework. Dealing with the relationship between the two sub-tasks plays a pivotal role in designing effective spotters. Although Transformer-based methods eliminate the heuristic post-processing, they still suffer from the synergy issue between the sub-tasks and low training efficiency. In this paper, we present DeepSolo, a simple DETR-like baseline that lets a single Decoder with Explicit Points Solo for text detection and recognition simultaneously. Technically, for each text instance, we represen…

DEtection TRansformer (DETR) started a trend that uses a group of learnable queries for unified visual perception. This work begins by applying this appealing paradigm to LiDAR-based point cloud segmentation and obtains a simple yet effective baseline. Although the naive adaptation obtains fair results, the instance segmentation performance is noticeably inferior to previous works. By diving into the details, we observe that instances in the sparse point clouds are relatively small to the whole scene and often have similar geometry but lack distinctive appearance for segmentation, which are ra…
