We construct a concrete model of Horndeski bounce with strong gravity in the past. Within this model we show that the correct spectra of cosmological perturbations may be generated at early contracting epoch, with mild fine-tuning ensuring that the scalar spectral tilt $n_S$ and tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ are consistent with observations. The smallness of $r$ is governed by the smallness of the scalar sound speed. Arbitrarily small values of $r$ are forbidden in our setup because of the strong coupling in the past. Nevertheless, we show that it is possible to generate perturbations in a controllable way, i.e. in the regime where the background evolution and perturbations are legitimately described within classical field theory and weakly coupled quantum theory.
In this note we collect, systemise and generalise the existing results for relations between general Horndeski theories and beyond Horndeski theories via disformal transformations of metric. We derive additional disformal transformation rules relating Lagrangian functions of beyond Horndeski theory and corresponding Horndeski theory and demonstrate that some of them become singular at some moments(s) once one constructs a non-singular cosmological solution in beyond Horndeski theory that is free from ghost, gradient instabilities and strong gravity regime during the entire evolution of the sys…
Adopting Noether point symmetries, we classify and integrate dynamical systems coming from Horndeski cosmologies. The method is particularly effective both to select the form of Horndeski models and to derive exact cosmological solutions. Starting from the Lagrangians selected by the Noether symmetries, it is possible to derive several modified theories of gravity like $f(R)$ gravity, Brans-Dicke gravity, string inspired gravity and so on. In any case, exact solutions are found out.
We consider anisotropic cosmologies in a particular shift-symmetric Horndeski theory containing the $G^{μν}\partial_μϕ\partial_νϕ$ coupling, where $G^{μν}$ is the Einstein tensor. This theory admits stable in the future self-accelerating cosmologies whose tensor perturbations propagate with the velocity very close to the speed of light such that the theory agrees with the gravity wave observations. Surprisingly, we find that the anisotropies within the Bianchi I homogeneous spacetime model are screened at early time by the scalar charge, whereas at late times they are damped in the usual way. …
We address the issue of potential superluminal propagation of gravitational waves in backgrounds neighboring the previously suggested bounce [arXiv:1807.08361] in beyond Horndeski theory. We find that the bouncing solution lies right at the boundary of the region where the gravitational waves propagate at speed exceeding that of light, i.e. that solution suffers superluminality problem. We suggest a novel version of a completely stable bouncing model where both scalar and tensor perturbations remain safely subluminal not only on the solution itself but also in its neighbourhood. The model rema…
We analyse what happens when the Horndeski Lagrangian is varied within the Palatini approach by considering the metric and connection as independent variables. Assuming the connection to be torsionless, there can be infinitely many metric-affine versions $L_{\rm P}$ of the original Lagrangian which differ from each other by terms proportional to the non-metricity tensor. After integrating out the connection, each $L_{\rm P}$ defines a metric theory, which can either belong to the original Horndeski family, or it can be of a more general DHOST type, or it shows the Ostrogradsky ghost. We analys…
In this paper, we show how the proper choice of gauge is critical in analyzing the stability of non-singular cosmological bounce solutions based on Horndeski theories. We show that it is possible to construct non-singular cosmological bounce solutions with classically stable behavior for all modes with wavelengths above the Planck scale where: (a) the solution involves a stage of null-energy condition violation during which gravity is described by a modification of Einstein's general relativity; and (b) the solution reduces to Einstein gravity both before and after the null-energy condition vi…
We generate new spherical and time-dependent solutions of viable Horndeski gravity by disforming a solution of the Einstein equations with scalar field source and positive cosmological constant. They describe dynamical objects embedded in asymptotically FLRW spacetimes and contain apparent horizons and a finite radius singularity that evolve in time in peculiar ways apparently not encountered before in Einstein and "old" scalar-tensor gravity.
Scalar-tensor theories are frequently only consistent with fifth force constraints in the presence of a screening mechanism, namely in order to suppress an otherwise unacceptably large coupling between the scalar and ordinary matter. Here we investigate precisely which subsets of Horndeski theories do not give rise to and/or require such a screening mechanism. We investigate these subsets in detail, deriving their form and discussing how they are restricted upon imposing additional bounds from the speed of gravitational waves, solar system tests and cosmological observables. Finally, we also i…
This essay is a brief review of the recent studies of non-singular cosmological scenarios with bounce and Genesis and their stability in a subclass of scalar-tensor theories with higher derivatives -- beyond Horndeski theories. We discuss the general results of stability analysis of the non-singular cosmological solutions in beyond Horndeski theories, as well as other closely related topics: 1) the no-go theorem, which is valid in the general Horndeski theories but not in their extensions, 2) singularities in disformal transformations relating beyond Horndeski theories with general ones, 3) he…
Higher derivative scalar interactions can give rise to interesting cosmological scenarios. We present a complete classification of such operators that can yield sizeable effects without introducing ghosts and, at the same time, define an effective field theory robust under the inclusion of quantum corrections. A set of rules to power count consistently the coefficients of the resulting Lagrangian is provided by the presence of an approximate global symmetry. The interactions that we derive in this way contain a subset of the so-called Horndeski and beyond Horndeski theories. Our construction t…
It was found recently that the anisotropies in the homogeneous Bianchi I cosmology considered within the context of a specific Horndeski theory are damped near the initial singularity instead of being amplified. In this work we extend the analysis of this phenomenon to cover the whole of the Horndeski family. We find that the phenomenon is absent in the K-essence and/or Kinetic Gravity Braiding theories, where the anisotropies grow as one approaches the singularity. The anisotropies are damped at early times only in more general Horndeski models whose Lagrangian includes terms quadratic and cu…
Recently, a no inner (Cauchy) horizon theorem for static black holes with non-trivial scalar hairs has been proved in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theories. In this paper, we extend the theorem to the static black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-Horndeski theories. We study the black hole interior geometry for some exact solutions and find that the spacetime has a (space-like) curvature singularity where the black hole mass gets an extremum and the Hawking temperature vanishes. We discuss further extensions of the theorem, including general Horndeski theories from disformal transformations.
Our Universe is nearly spatially flat, but this does not mean that it is exactly spatially flat. In this paper we derive general quadratic actions for cosmological perturbations in non-flat models from the Horndeski theory. This allows us to study how the spatial curvature influences the behavior of cosmological perturbations in the early universe described by some general scalar-tensor theory. We show that a tiny spatial curvature at the onset of inflation is unlikely to yield large (or ${\cal O}(1)$) effects on the primordial spectra even if one modifies gravity. We also argue that non-singu…
It is of interest to understand whether or not one can construct a classical field theory description of early cosmology which would be free of the initial singularity and stable throughout the whole evolution. One of the known possibilities is genesis within the Horndeski theory, which is thought to be an alternative to or a possible completion of the inflationary scenario. In this model, the strong coupling energy scale tends to zero in the asymptotic past, $t \to - \infty$, making the model potentially intractable. We point out that despite the latter property, the classical setup may be tr…
Observations of neutron star mergers in the late Universe have given significant restrictions to the class of viable scalar-tensor theories. In this paper we construct black holes within the "self-tuning" class of this restricted set, whereby the bare cosmological constant is absorbed by the dynamics of the scalar, giving a lower effective cosmological constant. We use analytic expansions at the singularity, black hole and cosmological horizon, and asymptotic region, coupled with numerical solutions, to find well-behaved black holes that asymptote to the self-tuned de Sitter geometry. The geom…
The observed temperature fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background can be traced back to primordial curvature modes that are sourced by adiabatic and/or entropic matter perturbations. In this paper, we explore the entropic mechanism in the context of non-singular bouncing cosmologies. We show that curvature modes are naturally generated during `graceful exit,' i.e., when the smoothing slow contraction phase ends and the universe enters the bounce stage. Here, the key role is played by the kinetic energy components that come to dominate the energy density and drive the evolution towards t…
We study the evolution of gravitational waves for non-singular cosmological solutions within the framework of Born-Infeld inspired gravity theories, with special emphasis on the Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld theory. We review the existence of two types of non-singular cosmologies, namely bouncing and asymptotically Minkowski solutions, from a perspective that makes their features more apparent. We study in detail the propagation of gravitational waves near these non-singular solutions and carefully discuss the origin and severity of the instabilities and strong coupling problems that appear. …
We apply a recently developed 2+1+1 decomposition of spacetime, based on a nonorthogonal double foliation for the study of spherically symmetric, static black hole solutions of Horndeski scalar-tensor theory. Our discussion proceeds in an effective field theory (EFT) of modified gravity approach, with the action depending on metric and embedding scalars adapted to the nonorthogonal 2+1+1 decomposition. We prove that the most generic class of Horndeski Lagrangians compatible with observations can be expressed in this EFT form. By studying the first order perturbation of the EFT action we derive…
