Video restoration, which aims to restore clear frames from degraded videos, has numerous important applications. The key to video restoration depends on utilizing inter-frame information. However, existing deep learning methods often rely on complicated network architectures, such as optical flow estimation, deformable convolution, and cross-frame self-attention layers, resulting in high computational costs. In this study, we propose a simple yet effective framework for video restoration. Our approach is based on grouped spatial-temporal shift, which is a lightweight and straightforward technique that can implicitly capture inter-frame correspondences for multi-frame aggregation. By introducing grouped spatial shift, we attain expansive effective receptive fields. Combined with basic 2D convolution, this simple framework can effectively aggregate inter-frame information. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our framework outperforms the previous state-of-the-art method, while using less than a quarter of its computational cost, on both video deblurring and video denoising tasks. These results indicate the potential for our approach to significantly reduce computational overhead while maintaining high-quality results. In most video platforms, such as Youtube, and TikTok, the played videos usually have undergone multiple video encodings such as hardware encoding by recording devices, software encoding by video editing apps, and single/multiple video transcoding by video application servers. Previous works in compressed video restoration typically assume the compression artifacts are caused by one-time encoding. Thus, the derived solution usually does not work very well in practice. In this paper, we propose a new method, temporal spatial auxiliary network (TSAN), for transcoded video restoration. Our method …

Video restoration (e.g., video super-resolution) aims to restore high-quality frames from low-quality frames. Different from single image restoration, video restoration generally requires to utilize temporal information from multiple adjacent but usually misaligned video frames. Existing deep methods generally tackle with this by exploiting a sliding window strategy or a recurrent architecture, which either is restricted by frame-by-frame restoration or lacks long-range modelling ability. In this paper, we propose a Video Restoration Transformer (VRT) with parallel frame prediction and long-ra…

How to efficiently utilize the temporal features is crucial, yet challenging, for video restoration. The temporal features usually contain various noisy and uncorrelated information, and they may interfere with the restoration of the current frame. This paper proposes learning noise-robust feature representations to help video restoration. We are inspired by that the neural codec is a natural denoiser. In neural codec, the noisy and uncorrelated contents which are hard to predict but cost lots of bits are more inclined to be discarded for bitrate saving. Therefore, we design a neural compressi…
With more advanced deep network architectures and learning schemes such as GANs, the performance of video restoration algorithms has greatly improved recently. Meanwhile, the loss functions for optimizing deep neural networks remain relatively unchanged. To this end, we propose a new framework for building effective loss functions by learning a discriminative space specific to a video restoration task. Our framework is similar to GANs in that we iteratively train two networks - a generator and a loss network. The generator learns to restore videos in a supervised fashion, by following ground t…

Recent deep-learning-based video compression methods brought coding gains over conventional codecs such as AVC and HEVC. However, learning-based codecs generally require considerable computation time and model complexity. In this paper, we propose a new lightweight hybrid video codec consisting of a conventional video codec(HEVC / VVC), a lossless image codec, and our new restoration network. Precisely, our encoder consists of the conventional video encoder and a lossless image encoder, transmitting a lossy-compressed video bitstream along with a losslessly-compressed reference frame. The deco…

Video transmission applications (e.g., conferencing) are gaining momentum, especially in times of global health pandemic. Video signals are transmitted over lossy channels, resulting in low-quality received signals. To restore videos on recipient edge devices in real-time, we introduce an efficient video restoration network, EVRNet. EVRNet efficiently allocates parameters inside the network using alignment, differential, and fusion modules. With extensive experiments on video restoration tasks (deblocking, denoising, and super-resolution), we demonstrate that EVRNet delivers competitive perfor…

Video restoration aims at restoring multiple high-quality frames from multiple low-quality frames. Existing video restoration methods generally fall into two extreme cases, i.e., they either restore all frames in parallel or restore the video frame by frame in a recurrent way, which would result in different merits and drawbacks. Typically, the former has the advantage of temporal information fusion. However, it suffers from large model size and intensive memory consumption; the latter has a relatively small model size as it shares parameters across frames; however, it lacks long-range depende…
Despite the growing popularity of video super-resolution (VSR), there is still no good way to assess the quality of the restored details in upscaled frames. Some SR methods may produce the wrong digit or an entirely different face. Whether a method's results are trustworthy depends on how well it restores truthful details. Image super-resolution can use natural distributions to produce a high-resolution image that is only somewhat similar to the real one. VSR enables exploration of additional information in neighboring frames to restore details from the original scene. The ERQA metric, which w…
This paper presents a novel method for restoring digital videos via a Deep Plug-and-Play (PnP) approach. Under a Bayesian formalism, the method consists in using a deep convolutional denoising network in place of the proximal operator of the prior in an alternating optimization scheme. We distinguish ourselves from prior PnP work by directly applying that method to restore a digital video from a degraded video observation. This way, a network trained once for denoising can be repurposed for other video restoration tasks. Our experiments in video deblurring, super-resolution, and interpolation …

Super-resolution (SR) has become a widely researched topic in recent years. SR methods can improve overall image and video quality and create new possibilities for further content analysis. But the SR mainstream focuses primarily on increasing the naturalness of the resulting image despite potentially losing context accuracy. Such methods may produce an incorrect digit, character, face, or other structural object even though they otherwise yield good visual quality. Incorrect detail restoration can cause errors when detecting and identifying objects both manually and automatically. To analyze …
Arguably the most common and salient object in daily video communications is the talking head, as encountered in social media, virtual classrooms, teleconferences, news broadcasting, talk shows, etc. When communication bandwidth is limited by network congestions or cost effectiveness, compression artifacts in talking head videos are inevitable. The resulting video quality degradation is highly visible and objectionable due to high acuity of human visual system to faces. To solve this problem, we develop a multi-modality deep convolutional neural network method for restoring face videos that ar…

Integrating deep learning techniques into the video coding framework gains significant improvement compared to the standard compression techniques, especially applying super-resolution (up-sampling) to down-sampling based video coding as post-processing. However, besides up-sampling degradation, the various artifacts brought from compression make super-resolution problem more difficult to solve. The straightforward solution is to integrate the artifact removal techniques before super-resolution. However, some helpful features may be removed together, degrading the super-resolution performance.…
Adversarial robustness of deep neural networks is an extensively studied problem in the literature and various methods have been proposed to defend against adversarial images. However, only a handful of defense methods have been developed for defending against attacked videos. In this paper, we propose a novel Over-and-Under complete restoration network for Defending against adversarial videos (OUDefend). Most restoration networks adopt an encoder-decoder architecture that first shrinks spatial dimension then expands it back. This approach learns undercomplete representations, which have large…

Deep learning-based blind super-resolution (SR) methods have recently achieved unprecedented performance in upscaling frames with unknown degradation. These models are able to accurately estimate the unknown downscaling kernel from a given low-resolution (LR) image in order to leverage the kernel during restoration. Although these approaches have largely been successful, they are predominantly image-based and therefore do not exploit the temporal properties of the kernels across multiple video frames. In this paper, we investigated the temporal properties of the kernels and highlighted its imp…
Recent years have witnessed the dramatic growth of Internet video traffic, where the video bitstreams are often compressed and delivered in low quality to fit the streamer's uplink bandwidth. To alleviate the quality degradation, it comes the rise of Neural-enhanced Video Streaming (NVS), which shows great prospects for recovering low-quality videos by mostly deploying neural super-resolution (SR) on the media server. Despite its benefit, we reveal that current mainstream works with SR enhancement have not achieved the desired rate-distortion trade-off between bitrate saving and quality restor…

The success of the state-of-the-art video deblurring methods stems mainly from implicit or explicit estimation of alignment among the adjacent frames for latent video restoration. However, due to the influence of the blur effect, estimating the alignment information from the blurry adjacent frames is not a trivial task. Inaccurate estimations will interfere the following frame restoration. Instead of estimating alignment information, we propose a simple and effective deep Recurrent Neural Network with Multi-scale Bi-directional Propagation (RNN-MBP) to effectively propagate and gather the info…

When comparing learned image/video restoration and compression methods, it is common to report peak-signal to noise ratio (PSNR) results. However, there does not exist a generally agreed upon practice to compute PSNR for sets of images or video. Some authors report average of individual image/frame PSNR, which is equivalent to computing a single PSNR from the geometric mean of individual image/frame mean-square error (MSE). Others compute a single PSNR from the arithmetic mean of frame MSEs for each video. Furthermore, some compute the MSE/PSNR of Y-channel only, while others compute MSE/PSNR …
We present TDNet, a temporally distributed network designed for fast and accurate video semantic segmentation. We observe that features extracted from a certain high-level layer of a deep CNN can be approximated by composing features extracted from several shallower sub-networks. Leveraging the inherent temporal continuity in videos, we distribute these sub-networks over sequential frames. Therefore, at each time step, we only need to perform a lightweight computation to extract a sub-features group from a single sub-network. The full features used for segmentation are then recomposed by appli…
Encoders of AOM/AV1 codec consider an input video sequence as succession of frames grouped in Golden-Frame (GF) groups. The coding structure of a GF group is fixed with a given GF group size. In the current AOM/AV1 encoder, video frames are coded using a hierarchical, multilayer coding structure within one GF group. It has been observed that the use of multilayer coding structure may result in worse coding performance if the GF group presents consistent stillness across its frames. This paper proposes a new approach that adaptively designs the Golden-Frame (GF) group coding structure through t…
