Majorana bound states constitute one of the simplest examples of emergent non-Abelian excitations in condensed matter physics. A toy model proposed by Kitaev shows that such states can arise at the ends of a spinless $p$-wave superconducting chain. Practical proposals for its realization require coupling neighboring quantum dots in a chain via both electron tunneling and crossed Andreev reflection. While both processes have been observed in semiconducting nanowires and carbon nanotubes, crossed-Andreev interaction was neither easily tunable nor strong enough to induce coherent hybridization of dot states. Here we demonstrate the simultaneous presence of all necessary ingredients for an artificial Kitaev chain: two spin-polarized quantum dots in an InSb nanowire strongly coupled by both elastic co-tunneling and crossed Andreev reflection. We fine-tune this system to a sweet spot where a pair of Poor Man's Majorana states is predicted to appear. At this sweet spot, the transport characteristics satisfy the theoretical predictions for such a system, including pairwise correlation, zero charge and stability against local perturbations. While the simple system presented here can be scaled to simulate a full Kitaev chain with an emergent topological order, it can also be used imminently to explore relevant physics related to non-Abelian anyons.
We show that in double-chain Mott insulators (ladders), disordered alternating ionic potentials may locally destroy coherence of magnetic excitations and lead to the appearance of spontaneously dimerized islands inside the Haldane spin-liquid phase. We argue that a boundary between the dimerized and Haldane phases of a spin-1/2 ladder supports a localized zero-energy Majorana fermion mode. Based on these findings we suggest a realization of a generalized Kitaev model where Majorana fermions can propagate in more than one dimension.

Kitaev chain is a theoretical model of a one-dimensional topological superconductor with Majorana zero modes at the two ends of the chain. With the goal of emulating this model, we build a chain of three quantum dots in a semiconductor nanowire. We observe Andreev bound states in each of the three dots and study their magnetic field and gate voltage dependence. Theory indicates that triple dot states acquire Majorana polarization when Andreev states in all three dots reach zero energy in a narrow range of magnetic field. In our device Andreev states in one of the dots reach zero energy at a lo…
We show that a single-fermion quantum dot acquires odd-frequency Gor'kov anomalous averages in proximity to strongly correlated Majorana zero modes, described by the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. Despite the presence of finite anomalous pairing, the superconducting gap vanishes for the intermediate coupling strength between the quantum dot and Majoranas. The increase of the coupling leads to smooth suppression of the original quasiparticles. This effect might be used as a characterization tool for recently proposed tabletop realizations of the SYK model.

We exploit hyperfine interactions in a single Mn-ion confined in a quantum dot (QD) to create a qudit, i.e. a multi-level quantum-bit system, with well defined, addressable and robust set of spin states for the realization of universal quantum gates. We generate and probe an arbitrary superposition of states between selected hyperfine energy level pairs by using electron double resonance detected nuclear magnetic resonance (EDNMR). This enables the observation of Rabi oscillations and the experimental realization of NOT and SWAP universal quantum gates that are robust against decoherence. Our …
With the aim of improving solar cell efficiency, a structure for realizing electron tunneling from In0.6Al0.4As quantum dots (QDs) through an Al0.4Ga0.6As barrier to AlAs has been grown using molecular beam epitaxy. The photoluminescence decay time decreased from 1.1 ns to 390 ps as the barrier thickness decreased from 4 to 2 nm, which indicates that the photo-excited carriers tunneled from the QDs to the AlAs X energy level for a barrier thickness 2 nm in 0.6 ns, which is significantly longer than the tunneling time of GaAs and InAlAs quantum wells. We expect that this structure will assist i…
Majorana zero modes in a superconductor-semiconductor nanowire have been extensively studied during the past decade. Disorder remains a serious problem, preventing the definitive observation of topological Majorana bound states. Thus, it is worthwhile to revisit the simple model, the Kitaev chain, and study the effects of weak and strong disorder on the Kitaev chain. By comparing the role of disorder in a Kitaev chain with that in a nanowire, we find that disorder affects both systems but in a nonuniversal manner. In general, disorder has a much stronger effect on the nanowire than the Kitaev …
We discuss a network of Kitaev wires coupled to several individually-tunable quantum dots as an extension of the recent experiments on a quantum dot coupled to a nanowire hosting Majorana zero modes [Deng et al. Science 354 1557 (2016) and Deng et al. arXiv:1712.03536 (2017)]. The setup features localized Majorana modes with exact zero energy and we show that they can be manipulated by solely acting on the quantum dots. A braiding process can be obtained by arranging three wires as a trijunction and a charge readout of the quantum dots can be used to reveal the non-Abelian statistics of Majora…
We demonstrate experimentally an autonomous nanoscale energy harvester that utilises the physics of resonant tunnelling quantum dots. Gate defined quantum dots on GaAs/AlGaAs high-electron-mobility transistors are placed on either side of a hot electron reservoir. The discrete energy levels of the quantum dots are tuned to be aligned with low energy electrons on one side and high energy electrons on the other side of the hot reservoir. The quantum dots thus act as energy filters and allow for the conversion of heat from the cavity into electrical power. This energy harvester device, measured a…
The zero-bias peak (ZBP) is understood as the definite signature of a Majorana bound state (MBS) when attached to a semi-infinite Kitaev nanowire (KNW) nearby zero temperature. However, such characteristics concerning the realization of the KNW constitute a profound experimental challenge. We explore theoretically a QD connected to a topological KNW of finite size at non-zero temperatures and show that overlapped MBSs of the wire edges can become effectively decoupled from each other and the characteristic ZBP can be fully recovered if one tunes the system into the leaked Majorana fermion fixe…
Semiconductor quantum dots have proven to be a useful platform for quantum simulation in the solid state. However, implementing a superconducting coupling between quantum dots mediated by a Cooper pair has so far suffered from limited tunability and strong suppression. This has limited applications such as Cooper pair splitting and quantum dot simulation of topological Kitaev chains. In this work, we propose how to mediate tunable effective couplings via Andreev bound states in a semiconductor-superconductor nanowire connecting two quantum dots. We show that in this way it is possible to indiv…
We consider two interacting quantum dots coupled by standard superconductors. We derive an effective Hamiltonian, and show that over a wide parameter range a degenerate ground state can be obtained. An exotique form of Majorana bound states are supported at these degeneracies, and the system can be adiabatically tuned to a limit in which it is equivalent to the one-dimensional wire model of Kitaev. We give the form of a Majorana bound state in this system in the strong interaction limit in the many-particle picture. We also study the Josephson current in this system, and demonstrate that a dou…

We demonstrate non-perturbative coupling between a single self-assembled InGaAs quantum dot and an external fiber-mirror based microcavity. Our results extend the previous realizations of tunable microcavities while ensuring spatial and spectral overlap between the cavity-mode and the emitter by simultaneously allowing for deterministic charge control of the quantum dots. Using resonant spectroscopy, we show that the coupled quantum dot cavity system is at the onset of strong coupling, with a cooperativity parameter of 2. Our results constitute a milestone towards the realization of a high eff…
We review recent studies on spin decoherence of electrons and holes in quasi-two-dimensional quantum dots, as well as electron-spin relaxation in nanowire quantum dots. The spins of confined electrons and holes are considered major candidates for the realization of quantum information storage and processing devices, provided that sufficently long coherence and relaxation times can be achieved. The results presented here indicate that this prerequisite might be realized in both electron and hole quantum dots, taking one large step towards quantum computation with spin qubits.
