Anomalous Hall effect in very clean samples (high conductivity regime) is studied using a two-dimensional network model. We find that the off-diagonal conductivity comprises two parts: one which reflects the bulk properties as obtained by the Kubo formula and another which is sensitive to boundary conditions imposed on the network. The latter scales with the system width in the ideal case and for real-world samples, it will depend on the coherence length. It provides an alternative interpretation of the observed behaviour in the clean limit which is otherwise attributed to the skew scattering. We highlight analogies to friction in viscous fluids responsible for Couette flow.
Parity anomaly is a quantum mechanical effect that the parity symmetry in a two-dimensional classical action is failed to be restored in any regularization of the full quantum theory and is characterized by a half-quantized Hall conductivity. Here we propose a scheme to explore the experimental signature from parity anomaly in the measurement of optical Hall conductivity, in which the optical Hall conductivity is nearly half quantized for a proper range of frequency. The behaviors of optical Hall conductivity are studied for several models, which reveal the appearance of half-quantized Hall co…
The spin Hall conductivity is usually calculated for periodic solids, while the knowledge of local contributions from inhomogeneous regions like interfaces or surfaces would be desirable. In this work we derive a local expression for the spin Hall conductivity of two-dimensional systems in analogy to the local anomalous Hall conductivity discussed recently. Our approach is applicable to heterogeneous fully bounded systems and nanoribbons with both open and periodic boundary conditions.
In this paper, we revisit some quantum mechanical aspects related to the Quantum Hall Effect. We consider a Landau type model, paying a special attention to the experimental and geometrical features of Quantum Hall experiments. The resulting formalism is then used to compute explicitely the Hall conductivity from a Kubo formula.
The semi-classical study of the integer Quantum Hall conductivity is investigated for electrons in a bi-periodic potential $V(x,y)$. The Hall conductivity is due to the tunnelling effect and we concentrate our study to potentials having three wells in a periodic cell. A non-zero topological conductivity requires special conditions for the positions, and shapes of the wells. The results are derived analytically and well confirmed by numerical calculations.
A two-layer system coupled via tunneling and with different carrier masses in each layer is investigated in the integer quantum Hall regime. Striking deviations of the one-layer Hall conductivity from the usual quantization are found, if resonance between Landau levels of different layers is achieved. The appearance of negative jumps in the Hall conductivity is also predicted under suitable conditions. The results obtained are robust against disorder in the system.
A static electric field generates circulating currents at the surfaces of a magnetoelectric insulator. The anomalous Hall part of the surface conductivity tensor describing such bound currents can change by multiples of $e^2/h$ depending on the insulating surface preparation, and a bulk calculation does not fix its quantized part. To resolve this ambiguity, we develop a formalism for calculating the full surface anomalous Hall conductivity in a slab geometry. We identify a Berry-curvature term, closely related to the expression for the bulk anomalous Hall conductivity, whose value can change b…
The object of the present work is to study the quantum Hall effect through its symmetries and topological aspects. We consider the model of an electron moving in a two-dimensional lattice in the presence of applied in-plain electric field and perpendicular magnetic field. We refer to this as the two dimensional electric-magnetic Bloch problem (EMB). The Hall conductivity quatizations beyond the linear response approximation is analyzed.
The edge Hall conductivity is shown to be an integer multiple of $e^2/h$ which is almost surely independent of the choice of the disordered configuration. Its equality to the bulk Hall conductivity given by the Kubo-Chern formula follows from K-theoretic arguments. This leads to quantization of the Hall conductance for any redistribution of the current in the sample. It is argued that in experiments at most a few percent of the total current can be carried by edge states.
The spin-Hall conductivity of a disordered 2D electron gas has been calculated for an arbitrary spin-orbit interaction. We have found that in the diffusive regime of electron transport, in accordance with previous calculations, the dc spin-Hall conductivity of a homogeneous system turns to zero due to impurity scattering when the spin-orbit coupling is represented only by the Rashba interaction. However, when the Dresselhaus interaction is taken into account, the spin-Hall current is not zero. We also considered the spin-Hall currents induced by an inhomogeneous electric field. It is shown tha…
We derive a formula for the thermal conductivity tensor of a ballistic phonon Hall model. It is found that, although the diagonal elements of the conductivity tensor diverge to infinite, the off-diagonal elements are finite, antisymmetric, and odd in magnetic field. The off-diagonal elements are non-zero only if the dynamic matrix of the phonon system breaks mirror reflection symmetry. The results are obtained without perturbative assumptions about the spin-phonon interactions.
Graphene has an unusual low-energy band structure with four chiral bands and half-quantized and quantized Hall effects that have recently attracted theoretical and experimental attention. We study the Fermi energy and disorder dependence of its spin Hall conductivity. In the metallic regime we find that vertex corrections enhance the intrinsic spin Hall conductivity and that skew scattering can lead to its values that exceed the quantized ones expected when the chemical potential is inside the spin-orbit induced energy gap. We predict that large spin Hall conductivities will be observable in g…
Inertial effects play an important role in classical mechanics but have been largely overlooked in quantum mechanics. Nevertheless, the analogy between inertial forces on mass particles and electromagnetic forces on charged particles is not new. In this paper, we consider a rotating non-interacting planar two-dimensional electron gas with a perpendicular uniform magnetic field and investigate the effects of the rotation in the Hall conductivi
Dynamical scaling analysis is theoretically performed for the ac (optical) Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}(\varepsilon_F,ω)$ as a function of Fermi energy $\varepsilon_F$ and frequency $ω$ for the two-dimensional electron gas and for graphene. In both systems, results based on exact diagonalization show that $σ_{xy}(\varepsilon_F,ω)$ displays a well-defined dynamical scaling, for which the dynamical critical exponent as well as the localization exponent are fitted and plugged in. A crossover from the dc-like bahavior to the ac regime is identified. The dynamical scaling analysis has enabled us to qu…
We study intrinsic DC spin and valley Hall conductivity in doped ferromagnetic silicene in the presence of an electric filed applied perpendicular to silicene sheet. By calculating its energy spectrum and wavefunction and by making use of Kubo formalism, we obtain a general relation for the transverse Hall conductivity which can be used to obtain spin- and valley-Hall conductivity. Our results, in the zero limit of the exchange field, reduces to the previous results. Furthermore we discuss electrically tunable spin and valley polarized transport in ferromagnetic silicene and obtain the necessa…
The dynamical transport properties near the integer quantum Hall transition are investigated at zero temperature by means of the Dirac fermion approach. These properties have been studied experimentally at low frequency omega and low temperature near the nu=1 filling factor Hall transition, with the observation of an anusual broadening and an overall increase of the longitudinal conductivity Re sigma_{xx} as a function of omega. We find in our approach that, unlike for normal metals, the longitudinal conductivity increases as the frequency increases, whilst the width Delta B (or Delta nu) of t…
We establish topological nature of Hall conductivity of graphene and other $Z_2$ crystals in 2D and 3D in the presence of inhomogeneous perturbations. To this end the lattice Weyl-Wigner formalism is employed. The non-uniform mechanical stress is considered, along with spatially varying magnetic field. The relation of the obtained topological invariant to level counting is clarified.
It has been shown recently that the universal dc spin conductivity of two-dimensional electrons with a Rashba spin-orbit interaction is canceled by vertex corrections in a weak scattering regime. We prove that the zero bulk spin conductivity is an intrinsic property of the free-electron Hamiltonian and scattering is merely a tool to reveal this property in terms of the diagrammatic technique. When Zeeman energy is neglected, the zero dc conductivity persists in a magnetic field. Spin conductivity increases resonantly at the cyclotron frequency and then decays towards the universal value.
We study theoretically the anomalous Hall effect due to the vector spin chirality carried by the local spins in the $s$-$d$ model. We will show that the vector spin chirality indeed induces local Hall effect in the presence of the electron spin polarization, while the global Hall effect vanishes if electron transport is homogeneous. This anomalous Hall effect can be interpreted in terms of the rotational component of the spin current associated with the vector chirality.
We investigate the intrinsic spin Hall effect in a quantum well semiconductor doped with magnetic impurities, as a means to manipulate the carriers' spin. Using a simple Hamiltonian with Rashba spin-orbit coupling and exchange interactions, we analytically compute the spin Hall conductivity. It is demonstrated that using the appropriate order of limits, one recovers the intrinsic universal value. Numerical computations on a tight-binding model, in the weak disorder regime, confirm that the spin Hall effect is preserved in the presence of magnetic impurities. The optical spin conductivity shows…
We study the linear Hall response of 2D ballistic system on inhomogeneous magnetic field. We establish that in classical limit the Hall conductivity response on local magnetic field is quantized in units of $α_H \equiv \frac{e^3}{2 π^2 \hbar c}$. The quantized value depends on the point where the field is applied, this dependence being irregular in chaotic billiards. The phenomenon allows for direct tracing of special electron trajectories that belong to fractal repellor. We discuss how quantum effects smooth the quantization.
Electron spin-momentum locking together with background magnetic textures can significantly alter the electron transport properties. We theoretically investigate the electron transport at the interface between a topological insulator and a magnetic insulator with magnetic skyrmions on the top. In contrast to the conventional topological Hall effect in normal metals, the skyrmions yield an additional contribution to the anomalous Hall conductivity even in the absence of in-plane magnetic texture, arising from the phase factor characteristic to Dirac electrons acquired at skyrmion boundary.
We develop a theory of the valley Hall effect in high-quality graphene samples, in which strain fluctuation-induced random gauge potentials have been suggested as the dominant source of disorder. We find a near-quantized value of valley Hall conductivity in the band transport regime, which originates from an enhanced side jump of a Dirac electron when it scatters off the gauge potential. By assuming a small residue charge density our theory reproduces qualitatively the temperature- and gap-dependence of the observed valley Hall effect at the charge neutral point. Our study suggests that the va…
We found the universal relationship between frequency-dependent spin-Hall conductivity and magnetic susceptibility in clean 2D electron systems with Rashba coupling: $σ_{sH}(Ω)= \frac{e}{(gμ_B)^2m_b}χ_\parallel(Ω)$ in the presence of an arbitrary two-particle spin-conserving interaction. We show that the Coulomb interaction renormalizes the spin-Hall constant. The magnitude of the relative correction to $σ_{sH}$ is proportional to the Coulomb interaction parameter $e^2/εv_F\hbar$ and does not depend on the strength of the Rashba coupling $α$.
We point out a practical way to induce a finite charge Hall conductivity in graphene via an off-diagonal strain. Our conclusions are based on a general analysis and supported by numerical examples. The interplay between a substrate-induced gap and the strain is discussed. We show that the substrate-induced gap itself does not break the symmetry that maps one valley onto the other, and hence does not yield a net charge Hall effect. The net charge Hall conductivity is found to be sizable and should be observable in the presence of both the gap and the strain. The sign of the Hall conductivity ca…
We report an experimental study of the quantum corrections to the longitudinal conductivity and the Hall coefficient of a low mobility, high density two-dimensional two-dimensional electron gas in a AlGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well in a wide temperature range (1.5 K - 110 K). This temperature range covers both the diffusive and the ballistic interaction regimes for our samples. It was therefore possible to study the crossover region for the longitudinal conductivity and the Hall effect.
We have measured the complex conductivity $σ_{xx}$ of a two-dimensional electron system in the quantum Hall regime up to frequencies of 6 GHz at electron temperatures below 100 mK. Using both its imaginary and real part we show that $σ_{xx}$ can be scaled to a single function for different frequencies and for all investigated transitions between plateaus in the quantum Hall effect. Additionally, the conductivity in the variable-range hopping regime is used for a direct evaluation of the localization length $ξ$. Even for large filing factor distances $δν$ from the critical point we find $ξ\prop…
The geometrical intrinsic contribution to the anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) of a metal is commonly expressed as a reciprocal-space integral: as such, it only addresses unbounded and macroscopically homogeneous samples. Here we show that the geometrical AHC has an equivalent expression as a local property. We define a "geometrical marker" which actually probes the AHC in inhomogeneous systems (e.g. heterojunctions), as well as in bounded samples. The marker may even include extrinsic contributions of geometrical nature.
We have revealed from a numerical study that the optical Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}(ω)$ has a characteristic feature even in the ac ($\sim$ THz) regime in that the Hall plateaus are retained both in the ordinary two-dimensional electron gas and in graphene in the quantum Hall (QHE) regime, although the plateau height is no longer quantized in ac. In graphene $σ_{xy}(ω)$ reflects the unusual Landau level structure. The effect remains unexpectedly robust against a significant strength of disorder, which we attribute to an effect of localization. We predict the ac quantum Hall measurements are fea…
In the conventional paradigm of the spin Hall effect, the side-jump conductivity due to electron-phonon scattering is regarded to be temperature independent. To the contrary, we draw the distinction that, while this side-jump conductivity is temperature independent in the classical equipartition regime where the longitudinal resistivity is linear in temperature, it is temperature dependent below the equipartition regime. The mechanism resulting in this temperature dependence differs from the familiar one of the longitudinal resistivity. In the concrete example of Pt, we show that the change of…
Results are presented for the optical Hall conductivity of a Floquet topological insulator (FTI) for an ideal closed quantum system, as well as an open system in a nonequilibrium steady-state with a reservoir. The steady-state, even for the open system, is strongly dependent on the topological phase of the FTI, with certain phases showing a remarkable near-cancellation from pockets of Berry-curvature of opposite signs, leading to a suppressed low-frequency Hall conductivity, that also shows an anomalous temperature dependence, by increasing as the temperature of the reservoir is increased. Suc…
We calculate the Hall viscosity and the nonlocal (i.e., dependent on wave vector $\bm q$) Hall conductivity of "gapped graphene" (a non-topological insulator with two valleys) in the presence of a strong perpendicular magnetic field. Using the linear-response theory at zero temperature within the Dirac approximation for the Landau levels, we present analytical expressions for both valley and total Hall viscosity and conductivity up to $\bm q^2$ at all frequencies. Although the final formulas for total Hall viscosity and conductivity are similar to the ones previously obtained for gapless graph…
We predict theoretically that, when a normal metallic thin film (without bulk spin-orbit coupling, such as Cu or Al) is sandwiched by two insulators, two prominent effects arise due to the interfacial spin-orbit coupling: a giant spin-Hall conductivity due to the surface scattering and a transverse electric polarization due to the spin-dependent phase shift in the spinor wave functions.
We have studied experimentally the low temperature conductivity of mesoscopic size InAs/GaSb quantum well Hall bar devices in the inverted regime. Using a pair of electrostatic gates we were able to move the Fermi level into the electron-hole hybridization state, and observe a mini gap. Temperature dependence of the conductivity in the gap shows residual conductivity, which can be consistently explained by the contributions from the free as well as the hybridized carriers in the presence of impurity scattering, as proposed by Naveh and Laikhtman [Euro. Phys. Lett., 55, 545-551 (2001)]. Experim…
The quantum Hall conductivity in the presence of constant magnetic field may be represented as the topological TKNN invariant. Recently the generalization of this expression has been proposed for the non - uniform magnetic field. \rev{The quantum Hall conductivity is represented as the topological invariant in phase space in terms of the Wigner transformed two - point Green function.} This representation has been derived when the inter - electron interactions were neglected. It is natural to suppose, that in the presence of interactions the Hall conductivity is still given by the same expressi…
We analyse theoretically the conductivity of a quantum Hall system exposed to microwave radiation. We find that whenever microwave frequency and cyclotron frequency are commensurate, there is a {\em resonance} in the longitudinal conductivity. This resonance has the form of the derivative of a Lorentz function; precisely at the center of the resonance, the microwave induced conductivity vanishes. Between the resonances there are maxima and minima, the depths and precise positions of which depend on the microwave amplitude and the scattering rate of the impurities. We demonstrate the existence …
Using the recently proposed definition of a conserved spin-current operator [J. Shi et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 076604 (2006)] we explore the frequency dependent spin Hall conductivity for a two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction in response to an oscillating electric field. We show that the optical spectrum of the spin Hall conductivity exhibit remarkable changes when the new definition of spin current is applied. Such behavior is mainly due to a significant contribution of the spin torque term which is absent in the conventional form of the spin curr…
We study the transport properties of pinned striped quantum Hall phases. We show that under quite general assumptions, the macroscopic conductivity tensor satisfies a semicircle law. In particular, this result is valid for both smectic and nematic stripe phases, independent of the presence of topological defects such as dislocations and grain boundaries. As a special case, our results explain the experimental validity of a product rule for the dissipative part of the resistivity tensor, which was previously derived by MacDonald and Fisher for a perfect stripe structure.
For the two-dimensional ideal electron gas with the Rashba spin-orbit interaction and in the presence of non-magnetic short-ranged potential impurities the spin-Hall conductivity $σ_{sH}$ is found by direct microscopic calculation. Within the semiclassical approximation $\hbar/τ\ll ε_F$ and $Δ\ll ε_F$ the value of $σ_{sH}$ is zero for arbitrary ratio of the spin-orbit splitting $Δ$ and the inverse elastic scattering time $1/τ$.
Hall conductivity for the intrinsic quantum Hall effect in homogeneous systems is given by the topological invariant composed of the Green function depending on momentum of quasiparticle. This expression reveals correspondence with the mathematical notion of the degree of mapping. A more involved situation takes place for the Hall effect in the presence of external magnetic field. In this case the mentioned expression remains valid if the Green function is replaced by its Wigner transformation while ordinary products are replaced by the Moyal products. Such an expression, unfortunately, is muc…
We measure the Hall conductivity, $σ_{xy}$, on a Corbino geometry sample of a high-mobility AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure in a pulsed magnetic field. At a bath temperature about 80 mK, we observe well expressed plateaux in $σ_{xy}$ at integer filling factors. In the pulsed magnetic field, the Laughlin condition of the phase coherence of the electron wave functions is strongly violated and, hence, is not crucial for $σ_{xy}$ quantization.
We study the effect of disorder on the intrinsic anomalous Hall (AH) conductivity in a spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gas with a Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction. We find that AH conductivity vanishes unless the lifetime is spin-dependent, similar to the spin Hall (SH) conductivity in the non-magnetic system. In addition, we find that the SH conductivity does not vanish in the presence of magnetic scatterers. We show that the SH conductivity can be controlled by changing the amount of the magnetic impurities.
A key step towards dissipationless transport devices is the quantum anomalous Hall effect, which is characterized by an integer quantized Hall conductance in a ferromagnetic insulator with strong spin-orbit coupling. In this work, the anomalous Hall effect due to the impurity scattering, namely the extrinsic anomalous Hall effect, is studied when the Fermi energy crosses with the topologically nontrivial conduction band of a quantum anomalous Hall system. Two major extrinsic contributions, the side-jump and skew-scattering Hall conductivities, are calculated using the diagrammatic techniques i…
We develop a theory of extrinsic spin currents in semiconductors, resulting from spin-orbit coupling at charged scatterers, which leads to skew scattering and side jump contributions to the spin Hall conductance. Applying the theory to bulk n-GaAs, without any free parameters, we find spin currents that are in reasonable agreement with recent experiments by Kato et al. [Science 306, 1910 (2004)].
We have revealed from a numerical study that the Hall plateaus are retained in the optical Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}(ω)$ in the ac ($\sim$ THz) regime in both of the ordinary two-dimensional electron gas and graphene in the quantum Hall regime, although the plateau height in ac deviates from integer multiples of $e^2/h$. The effect remains unexpectedly robust against a significant strength of disorder, which we attribute to an effect of localization. We predict the ac Hall plateaus are observable through the Faraday rotation with the rotation angle characterized by the fine-structure constant …
The intrinsic spin Hall conductivity of a two-dimensional gas confined to SrTiO$_3$, such as occurs at an LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface, is calculated from the Kubo formula. The effect of strain in the [001] (normal to the quantum well direction) and the [111] direction is incorporated into a full tight-binding Hamiltonian. We show that the spin-charge conversion ratio can be significantly altered through strain and gate voltage by tuning the chemical potential. Strain direction is also a significant factor in the spin Hall response as this direction affects the alignment of the conduction ban…
We consider the quantum Hall effect (QHE) in a system of interacting electrons. Our formalism is valid for systems in the presence of an external magnetic field, as well as for systems with a nontrivial band topology. That is, the expressions for the conductivity derived are valid for both the ordinary QHE and for the intrinsic anomalous QHE. The expression for the conductivity applies to external fields that may vary in an arbitrary way, and takes into account disorder. It is assumed that the ground state of the system is degenerate. We represent the QHE conductivity as $\frac{e^2}{h} \times …
Graphene has two atoms per unit cell with quasiparticles exhibiting the Dirac-like behavior. These properties lead to interband in addition to intraband optical transitions and modify the $f$-sum rule on the longitudinal conductivity. The expected dependence of the corresponding spectral weight on the applied gate voltage $V_g$ in a field effect graphene transistor is $\sim {const}- |V_g|^{3/2}$. For $V_g =0$, its temperature dependence is $T^3$ rather than the usual $T^2$. For the Hall conductivity, the corresponding spectral weight is determined by the Hall frequency $ω_H$ which is linear in…
The quantum magnetotransport properties of a monolayer of molybdenum disulfide are derived using linear response theory. Especially, the effect of topological terms on longitudinal and Hall conductivity is analyzed. The Hall conductivity exhibits fractional steps in the integer quantum Hall regime. Further complete spin and valley polarization of the longitudinal conductivity is seen in presence of these topological terms. Finally, the Shubnikov-de Hass oscillations are suppressed or enhanced contingent on the sign of these topological terms.
We use a mathematical framework that we introduced in a previous paper to study geometrical and quantum mechanical aspects of a Hall system with finite size and general boundary conditions. Geometrical structures control possibly the integral or fractionnal quantization of the Hall conductivity depending on the value of $NB/2π$ ($N$ is the number of charge carriers and $B$ is the magnetic field). When $NB/2π$ is irrationnal, we show that monovalued wave functions can be constructed only on the graph of a free group with two generators. When $NB/2π$ is rationnal, the relevant space becomes a pu…
We have measured the temperature dependence of the conductivity $σ_{xx}$ of a two-dimensional electron system deep into the localized regime of the quantum Hall plateau transition. Using variable-range hopping theory we are able to extract directly the localization length $ξ$ from this experiment. We use our results to study the scaling behavior of $ξ$ as a function of the filling factor distance $|δν|$ to the critical point of the transition. We find for all samples a power-law behavior $ξ\propto|δν|^{-γ}$ with a universal scaling exponent $γ= 2.3$ as proposed theoretically.
An arbitrarily small concentration of impurities can affect the spin Hall conductivity in a two-dimensional semiconductor system. We develop a Boltzmann-like equation that can be used for impurity scattering with arbitrary angular dependence, and for arbitrary angular dependence of the spin-orbit field b(k) around the Fermi surface. For a model applicable to a 2D hole system in GaAs, if the impurity scattering is not isotropic, we find that the spin Hall conductivity depends on the derivative of b with respect to the energy and on deviations from a parabolic band structure, as well as on the a…
The Haldane model on a honeycomb lattice is a paradigmatic example of a system featuring quantized Hall conductivity in the absence of an external magnetic field, that is, a quantum anomalous Hall effect. Recent theoretical work predicted that the anomalous Hall conductivity of massive Dirac fermions can display Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations, which could be observed in topological insulators and honeycomb layers with strong spin--orbit coupling. Here, we investigate the electronic transport properties of Chern insulators subject to high magnetic fields by means of accurate spectral expa…
We delve into spin Hall effect in generic spin-orbit coupled two-dimensional fermionic systems. We derive analytically the spin-orbit force responsible for the spin Hall effect, and find that it has `Lorentz force'-like form. We also derive the pseudo magnetic field responsible for this force. We establish the relation between the spin Hall conductivity, flux quanta and this pseudo magnetic field, similar to the one between charge Hall conductivity, flux quanta and the external field. We also present an exact closed-form expression of the spin Hall conductivity in a generic spin-orbit coupled …
