Hydrides offer an opportunity to study high-temperature (Tc) superconductivity at experimentally achievable pressures. However, they remained extremely high. Using density functional theory calculations, herein we demonstrated that a newly rare earth hydride, namely bulk ErH2, could be superconducting with a Tc around 80 K at 14.5 GPa. To date, the drived pressure is the lowest reported value for compressed hydrides. Besides superconductivity, Fermi Surface nesting and Kondo effect were manifested at this pressure. Intriguingly, due to Kondo destruction, superconductivity was prone to exist at 15 GPa. Under the rest of applied pressures, we also revealed a gap of band structure at 20 GPa on the background of normal metallic states. At 20 GPa, this compressed system could act as a host of superconductor being judged from a sharp jump of spontaneous magnetic susceptibility with an evanescent spin density of state at Fermi level along with the competition between spin density wave and superconductivity. Finally, electron pairing glue for ErH2 at these three typical pressures was attributed to the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation.
Inspired by the high critical temperature in yttrium superhydride and the low stabilized pressure in superconducting cerium superhydride, we carry out four independent runs to synthesize yttrium-cerium alloy hydrides. The phases examined by the Raman scattering and x-ray diffraction measurements. The superconductivity is detected with the zero-resistance state at the critical temperature in the range of 97-140 K at pressures ranging from 114 GPa to 120$\pm$4 GPa. The maximum critical temperature of the synthesized hydrides is larger than those reported for cerium hydrides, while the correspond…
Hydrogen-based superconductors provide a route to the long-sought goal of room-temperature superconductivity, but the high pressures required to metallize these materials limit their immediate application. For example, carbonaceous sulfur hydride, the first room-temperature superconductor, can reach a critical temperature (Tc) of 288 K only at the extreme pressure of 267 GPa. The next recognized challenge is the realization of room-temperature superconductivity at significantly lower pressures. Here, we propose a strategy for the rational design of high-temperature superconductors at low press…
Recent discovery of superconductive rare earth/actinide superhydrides has ushered in a new era of superconductivity research at high pressures. This distinct type of clathrate metal hydrides was first proposed for alkaline-earth-metal hydride CaH6 that, however, has long eluded experimental synthesis, impeding an understanding of pertinent physics. Here, we report successful synthesis of CaH6 and its measured superconducting critical temperature Tc of 215 K at 172 GPa, which is evidenced by a sharp drop of resistivity to zero and a characteristic decrease of Tc under a magnetic field up to 9 T…
The rare-earth metal hydrides with clathrate structures have been highly attractive because of their promising high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductivity at high pressure. Recently, cerium hydride CeH$_9$ composed of Ce-encapsulated clathrate H cages was synthesized at much lower pressures of 80$-$100 GPa, compared to other experimentally synthesized rare-earth hydrides such as LaH$_{10}$ and YH$_6$. Based on density-functional theory calculations, we find that the Ce 5$p$ semicore and 4$f$/5$d$ valence states strongly hybridize with the H 1$s$ state, while a transfer of electrons occurs from Ce to H …
The computational and experimental exploration of the phase diagrams of binary hydrides under high pressure has uncovered phases with novel stoichiometries and structures, some which are superconducting at quite high temperatures. Herein we review the plethora of studies that have been undertaken in the last decade on the main group and transition metal hydrides, as well as a few of the rare earth hydrides at pressures attainable in diamond anvil cells. The aggregate of data shows that the propensity for superconductivity is dependent upon the species used to "dope" hydrogen, with some of the …
Room temperature superconductivity is a dream that mankind has been chasing for a century. In recent years, the synthesis of H3S, LaH10 and C-S-H system has gradually made this dream a reality. But the extreme pressures required for the metallization of hydrogen-based superconductors limit their applications. In this work, we design a series of high temperature superconductors that can be stable at moderate pressures by incorporating heavy rare earth elements Yb/Lu into sodalite-like clathrate hydrides. In particular, the critical temperatures of Y3LuH24, YLuH12 and YLu3H24 are 283 K, 275 K an…
High Tc superconductivity in heavy Rare Earth Hydrides: correlation between the presence of the f states on the Fermi surface, nesting and the value of Tc
The theoretical exploration of the phase diagrams of binary hydrides under pressure using \emph{ab initio} crystal structure prediction techniques coupled with first-principles calculations has led to the \emph{in silico} discovery of numerous novel superconducting materials. This Perspective article focuses on the alkaline earth and rare earth polyhydrides whose superconducting critical temperature, $T_c$, was predicted to be above the boiling point of liquid nitrogen. After providing a brief overview of the computational protocol used to predict the structures of stable and metastable hydrid…
Recently, an alkaline earth hydride CaH$_6$ having a sodalitelike clathrate structure has been experimentally synthesized at megabar pressures with a maximum $T_c$ of 215 K, comparable to that of a rare earth hydride LaH$_{10}$. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we find that CaH$_6$ exhibits a huge peak in the Eliashberg spectral function $α^{2}F$ around the low-frequency region of H-derived phonon modes, in contrast to LaH$_{10}$ having a widely spreading spectrum of $α^{2}F$ over the whole frequencies of H-derived phonon modes. It is revealed that the huge peak of $α^{2}F$ in CaH…
Noble metals adopt close-packed structures at ambient pressure and rarely undergo structural transformation at high pressures. Platinum (Pt), in particular, is normally considered to be unreactive and is therefore not expected to form hydrides under pressure. We predict that platinum hydride (PtH) has a lower enthalpy than its constituents solid Pt and molecular hydrogen at pressures above 21.5 GPa. We have calculated structural phase transitions from tetragonal to hexagonal close-packed or face-centered cubic (fcc) PtH between 70 and 80 GPa. Linear response calculations indicate that PtH is a…
High-pressure structural searches of superhydrides CeBeH$_8$ and CeBH$_8$ were performed under ambient pressure up to 300 GPa. We identify $Fm\overline{3}m$-CeBeH$_8$ with a superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ of 56 K at 10 GPa. Two more phases with spacegroup $R\overline{3}m$ and $C2/m$, were investigated within the increasing pressures. CeBH$_8$ shows a similar phase transition process as CeBeH$_8$ but with higher transition pressures and higher $T_c$. $Fm\overline{3}m$-CeBH$_8$ is predicted to be superconducting above 120 GPa with a maximum $T_{c}$ of 118 K at 150 GPa. $R\overlin…
The experimental realization of high-temperature superconductivity in compressed hydrides H$_3$S and LaH$_{10}$ at high pressures over 150 GPa has aroused great interest in reducing the stabilization pressure of superconducting hydrides. For cerium hydride CeH$_9$ recently synthesized at 80$-$100 GPa, our first-principles calculations reveal that the strongly hybridized electronic states of Ce 4$f$ and H 1$s$ orbitals produce the topologically nontrivial Dirac nodal lines around the Fermi energy $E_F$, which are protected by crystalline symmetries. By hole doping, $E_F$ shifts down toward the …
The discovery of high-temperature conventional superconductivity in H3S with a critical temperature of Tc=203 K was followed by the recent record of Tc ~250 K in the face-centered cubic (fcc) lanthanum hydride LaH10 compound. It was realized in a new class of hydrogen-dominated compounds having a clathrate-like crystal structure in which hydrogen atoms form a 3D framework and surround a host atom of rare earth elements. Yttrium hydrides are predicted to have even higher Tc exceeding room temperature. In this paper, we synthesized and refined the crystal structure of new hydrides: YH4, YH6, and…

Searching for superconductivity with Tc near room temperature is of great interest both for fundamental science & many potential applications. Here we report the experimental discovery of superconductivity with maximum critical temperature (Tc) above 210 K in calcium superhydrides, the new alkali earth hydrides experimentally showing superconductivity above 200 K in addition to sulfur hydride & rare-earth hydride system. The materials are synthesized at the synergetic conditions of 160~190 GPa and ~2000 K using diamond anvil cell combined with in-situ laser heating technique. The superconducti…
The highest critical temperature of superconductivity Tc has been achieved in cuprates: 133 K at ambient pressure and 164 K at high pressures. As the nature of superconductivity in these materials is still not disclosed, the prospects for a higher Tc are not clear. In contrast the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory gives a clear guide for achieving high Tc: it should be a favorable combination of high frequency phonons, strong coupling between electrons and phonons, and high density of states. These conditions can be fulfilled for metallic hydrogen and covalent hydrogen dominant compounds.…
Rare-earth hydrides can exhibit high-temperature superconductivity under high pressure. Here, we apply a crystal structure prediction method to the current record-holding $T_c$ material, LaH$_{10}$, and a candidate for even higher $T_c$, YH$_{10}$. We find a pressure-induced phase transition from the experimentally observed cubic LaH$_{10}$ phase to a new hexagonal phase at around 420 GPa. This hexagonal phase could explain experimental observations of hcp impurities in fcc samples. We find that YH$_{10}$ forms similar structures to LaH$_{10}$ and discuss the sensitivity of superconductivity c…
The extreme pressures required to stabilize the recently discovered superhydrides represent a major obstacle to their practical application. In this paper, we propose a novel route to attain high-temperature superconductivity in hydrides at ambient pressure, by doping commercial metal borohydrides. Using first-principles calculations based on Density Functional Theory and Migdal-Eliashberg theory, we demonstrate that in Ca(BH$_4$)$_2$ a moderate hole doping of 0.03 holes per formula unit, obtained through a partial replacement of Ca with monovalent K, is sufficient to achieve $T_c$'s as high a…
Lanthanum hydride LaH$_{10}$ with a sodalitelike clathrate structure was experimentally realized to exhibit a room-temperature superconductivity under megabar pressures. Based on first-principles calculations, we reveal that the metal framework of La atoms has the excess electrons at interstitial regions. Such anionic electrons are easily captured to form a stable clathrate structure of H cages. We thus propose that the charge transfer from La to H atoms is mostly driven by the electride property of the La framework. Further, the interaction between La atoms and H cages induces a delocalizatio…
Utilizing the high stability of calcium and rare earth hydrides, CaFeAsF1-xHx (x = 0.0-1.0) and SmFeAsO1-xHx (x = 0.0-0.47) have been first synthesized using high pressure to form hydrogen-substituted 1111 type iron-arsenide superconductors. Neutron diffraction and density functional calculations have demonstrated that the hydrogens are incorporated as H- ions occupying F- sites in the blocking layer of CaFeAsF. The resulting CaFeAsF1-xHx is non-superconducting, whereas SmFeAsO1-xHx is a superconductor, with an optimal Tc = 55 K at x 0.2. It was found that up to 40% of the O2- ions can be repl…
The concept of a vestigial nematic order emerging from a "mother" spin or charge density-wave state has been applied to describe the phase diagrams of several systems, including unconventional superconductors. In a perfectly clean system, the two orders appear simultaneously via a first-order quantum phase transition, implying the absence of quantum criticality. Here, we investigate how this behavior is affected by impurity-free droplets that are naturally present in inhomogeneous systems. Due to their quantum dynamics, finite-size droplets sustain long-range nematic order but not long-range d…
A superconductor is a material that can conduct electricity with no resistance below its critical temperature (Tc). The highest Tc that has been achieved in cuprates1 is 133 K at ambient pressure2 and 164 K at high pressures3. As the nature of superconductivity in these materials has still not been explained, the prospects for a higher Tc are not clear. In contrast, the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory gives a guide for achieving high Tc and does not put bounds on Tc, all that is needed is a favorable combination of high frequency phonons, strong electron-phonon coupling, and a high dens…
Room temperature superconductivity has been achieved under high pressure in an organically derived carbonaceous sulfur hydride with a critical superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of 288 kelvin. This development is part of a new class of dense, hydrogen rich materials with remarkably high critical temperatures. Metal superhydrides are a subclass of these materials that provide a different and potentially more promising route to very high Tc superconductivity. The most promising binary metal superhydrides contain alkaline or rare earth elements, and recent experimental observations of La…
Discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in hydrogen-rich compounds has fuelled the enthusiasm for finding materials with more promising superconducting properties among hydrides. However, the ultrahigh pressure needed to synthesize and maintain high-temperature hydrogen-rich superconductors hinders the experimental investigation of these materials. For practical applications, it is also highly desired to find more hydrogen-rich materials that superconduct at high temperatures but under relatively lower pressures. Based on first-principles density functional theory, we calculate the ele…
Inorganic electrides are a new class of compounds catering to the interest of scientists due to the multiple usages exhibited by interstitial electrons in the lattice. However, the influence of the shape and distribution of interstitial electrons on physical properties and new forms of physical states are still unknown. In this work, crystal structure search algorithms are employed to explore the possibility of forming new electrides in the As-Li system, where interstitial electrons behave as 1D electron chains (1D electride) in Pmmm phase of AsLi$_7$ and transform into 0D electron clusters (0…
Comparing with the widely known transitional metal based van der Waals (vdW) materials, rare-earth based ones are rarely explored in the research of intrinsic two-dimensional (2D) magnetism. In this work, we report the physical properties of DyOCl, a rare-earth based vdW magnetic insulator with direct band gap of $\sim 5.72~eV$. The magnetic order of bulk DyOCl is determined by neutron scattering as the $A$-type antiferromagnetic structure below the Néel temperature $T_N=10~$K. The large magnetic moment near 10.1 $ μ_{B} $/Dy lies parallel to the $a$-axis with strong uniaxial magnetic anisotro…
Intuitively, doping represents one of the most promising avenues for optimization of best prospect superconductors (SC) such as conventional high-pressure SCs with record critical temperatures. However, doping at high pressure (HP) is very challenging, and there is not a proved route to achieve it in a controlled fashion. Aided by computing simulations, we show that it may be plausible to start by alloying primary materials and subsequently incorporate high ratios of hydrogen at moderates pressures ($\approx$1.5 Mbar). Our theoretical results evidence the possibility to tune the electronic str…
