The Maxwell equations based 3D analytical solution for the terahertz half-cycle electromagnetic wave transition radiation pulse has been found. This solution describes generation and propagation of transition radiation into free space from laser-produced relativistic electron bunch crossing a target-vacuum interface as a result of ultrashort laser pulse interaction with a thin high-conductivity target. The analytical solution found complements the theory of laser initiated transition radiation by describing the generated THz wave shape at the arbitrary distance from the generating target surface domain including near-field zone rather than the standard far-field characterization. The analytical research has also been supplemented with the 3D simulations using the finite-diference time-domain (FDTD) method, which makes it possible for description of much wider spatial domain as compared to that from the particle-in-cell (PIC) approach. The results reported fundamentally shed light on the interfere of an electron bunch field and THz field of broadband transition radiation from laser-plasma interaction studied for a long time in the experiments with solid density plasma and may in future inspire them to targeted measurements and investigations of unique super intense half-cycle THz radiation waves near the laser target.
Ultrahigh-power terahertz (THz) radiation sources are essential for many applications, such as nonlinear THz physics, THz-wave based compact accelerators, etc. However, until now none of THz sources reported, whether based upon large-scale accelerators or high power lasers, have produced THz pulses with energies above the millijoule (mJ) barrier. Here we report on the efficient generation of low-frequency (<3 THz) THz pulses with unprecedentedly high energies over 50 mJ. The THz radiation is produced by coherent transition radiation of a picosecond laser-accelerated ultra-bright bunch of relat…
We present a novel scheme to obtain robust, narrowband, and tunable THz emission by using a nano-dimensional overdense plasma target that is irradiated by two counter-propagating detuned laser pulses. So far, no narrowband THz sources with a field strength of GV/m-level have been reported from laser-solid interaction. We report intense THz pulses at beat-frequency ($\simeq$30THz) generated due to strong plasma current produced by the beat ponderomotive force in the colliding region, with an unprecedentedly high peak field strength of 11.9GV/m and spectral width $(Δf/f$$\simeq$$5.3\%)$ from 2D …
We demonstrate an intense broadband terahertz (THz) source based on the interaction of relativistic-intensity femtosecond lasers with aligned copper nanorod array targets. For copper nanorod targets with length 5 μm, a maximum 13.8 times enhancement in the THz pulse energy (in $\leq$ 20 THz spectral range) is measured as compared to that with a thick plane copper target under the same laser conditions. A further increase in the nanorod length leads to a decrease in the THz pulse energy at medium frequencies ($\leq$ 20THz) and increase of the electromagnetic pulse energy in the high-frequency r…
A highly adaptable and robust THz energy meter has been designed and implemented to detect energetic THz pulses from high intensity (greater than 1E18 watts per square centimeter) laser plasma interactions on OMEGA EP. THz radiation from the laser driven target is detected by a shielded pyrometer. A second identical pyrometer is used for background subtraction. The detector can be configured to detect THz pulses in the 1 mm to 30 microns (0.3 to 10 THz) range and pulse energies from joules to microjoules via changes in filtration, aperture size and position. Additional polarization selective f…
The excitation of THz radiation by the interaction of an ultra short laser pulse with the modes of a miniature corrugated plasma waveguide is considered. The axially corrugated waveguide supports the electromagnetic (EM) modes with appropriate polarization and subluminal phase velocities that can be phase matched to the ponderomotive potential associated with laser pulse, making significant THz generation possible. This process is studied via full format Particle-in-Cell (PIC) simulations that, for the first time, model the nonlinear dynamics of the plasma and the self-consistent evolution of …
An intense, short laser pulse propagating across a plasma boundary ponderomotively drives THz radiation. Full format PIC simulations and theoretical analysis are conducted to investigate the properties of this radiation. Simulation results show the THz emission originates in regions of varying density and covers a broad spectrum with maximum frequency close to the maximum plasma frequency. In the case of a sharp vacuum-plasma boundary, the radiation is generated symmetrically at the plasma entrance and exit, and its properties are independent of plasma density when the density exceeds a charac…
Terahertz pulse generation by ultra-intense two-color laser fields ionizing gases with near- to far-infrared carrier wavelength is studied from particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. For long wavelength ($10.6\ μ$m) promoting a large ratio of electron density over critical, photoionization is shown to catastrophically enhance the plasma wakefield, causing a net downshift in the optical spectrum and exciting THz fields with tens of GV/m amplitude in the laser direction. This emission is accompanied by coherent transition radiation (CTR) of comparable amplitude due to wakefield-driven electron acce…
The tremendous applications of terahertz (THz) spectroscopy and imaging require THz sources in different parameters. We propose a novel scheme to generate single-cycle powerful THz pulses by ultrashort intense laser pulses incident obliquely on a tenuous plasma slab of few THz wavelengths in thickness. This is made possible by driving a large amplitude electron plasma wave in the plasma slab, thus producing a net transient current at the plasma surfaces. Theory and simulations show that such a THz source is capable of providing megawatt power and field strength of MV/cm, which may open up new …
The spectrum of terahertz (THz) emission in gases via ionizing two-color femtosecond pulses is analyzed by means of a semi-analytic model and finite-difference-time-domain simulations in 1D and 2D geometries. We show that produced THz signals interact with free electron trajectories and thus influence significantly further THz generation upon propagation, i.e., make the process inherently nonlocal. This self-action plays a key role in the observed strong spectral broadening of the generated THz field. Diffraction limits the achievable THz bandwidth by efficiently depleting the low frequency am…
We demonstrate that the THz generation in air from a dual-color pulse, composed of the fundamental and second-harmonic waves, can be coherently controlled by field-free molecular alignment. By tuning its time delay to properly match various molecular alignment revivals, the THz generation from the dual-color pulse can be promoted or decreased due to the spatial cross-(de)focusing effect and the alignment-dependent ionization probabilities of the prealigned diatomic molecules of air. For the dual-color pulse of orthogonally polarized fundamental and second-harmonic waves, the polarization of th…
Two-color photoionization produces a cycle-averaged current driving broadband, conically emitted THz radiation. We investigate, through simulation, the processes determining the angle of conical emission. We find that the emission angle is determined by an optical Cherenkov effect, where the front velocity of the current source is faster than the THz phase velocity.
We study the influence of the polarization states of femtosecond two-color pulses ionizing gases on the emitted terahertz radiation. A local-current model and plane-wave evaluations justify the previously-reported impact on the THz energy yield and an (almost) linearly-polarized THz field when using circularly-polarized laser harmonics. For such pump pulses, the THz yield is independent on the relative phase between the two colors. When the pump pulses have same helicity, the increase in the THz yield is associated to longer ionization sequences and higher electron transverse momenta acquired …
Terahertz (THz) emission by two-color, ultrashort optical pulses interacting with underdense helium gases at ultrahigh intensities ($> 10^{19}\,\mathrm{W/cm}^2$) is investigated by means of 3D particle-in-cell simulations. The THz field is shown to be produced by two mechanisms occurring sequentially, namely, photoionization-induced radiation (PIR) by the two-color pulse and coherent transition radiation (CTR) by the wakefield-accelerated electrons escaping the plasma. For plasmas of atomic densities $> 10^{17}\,\mathrm{cm}^{-3}$, CTR proves to be the dominant process, providing THz bursts wit…
We report a plasma-based strong THz source generated by using intense femtosecond laser pulses to irradiate solid targets at relativistic intensity >10^18W/cm2. Energies up to 50 microJ/sr per THz pulse is observed in the specular direction when the laser pulses are incident onto a copper foil at 67.5 degree. The source appears to be linearly polarized. The temporal, spectral properties of the THz are measured by a single shot, electro-optic sampling method with a chirped laser pulse. The THz radiation is attributed to the self-organized transient fast electron currents formed along the target…
Waveform-controlled Terahertz (THz) radiation is of great importance due to its potential application in THz sensing and coherent control of quantum systems. We demonstrated a novel scheme to generate waveform-controlled THz radiation from air plasma produced when carrier-envelope-phase (CEP) stabilized few-cycle laser pulses undergo filamentation in ambient air. We launched CEP-stabilized 10 fs-long (~ 1.7 optical cycles) laser pulses at 1.8 μm into air and found that the generated THz waveform can be controlled by varying the filament length and the CEP of driving laser pulses. Calculations …
Broadband ultrashort terahertz (THz) pulses can be produced using plasma generation in a noble gas ionized by femtosecond two-color pulses. Here we demonstrate that, by using multiple-frequency laser pulses, one can obtain a waveform which optimizes the free electron trajectories in such a way that they reach the highest velocity at the electric field extrema. This allows to increase the THz conversion efficiency to the percent level, an unprecedented performance for THz generation in gases. Besides the analytical study of THz generation using a local current model, we perform comprehensive 3D…
We investigate the generation of broadband terahertz (THz) pulses with phase singularity from air plasmas created by fundamental and second harmonic laser pulses. We show that when the second harmonic beam carries a vortex charge, the THz beam acquires a vortex structure as well. A generic feature of such THz vortex is that the intensity is modulated along the azimuthal angle, which can be attributed to the spatially varying relative phase difference between the two pump harmonics. Fully space and time resolved numerical simulations reveal that transverse instabilities of the pump further affe…
This paper discusses numerical and experimental results on frequency downshifting and upshifting of a 10 $μ$m infrared laser to cover the entire wavelength (frequency) range from $λ$=1-150 $μ$m ($ν$=300-2 THz) using two different plasma techniques. The first plasma technique utilizes frequency downshifting of the drive laser pulse in a nonlinear plasma wake. Based on this technique, we have proposed and demonstrated that in a tailored plasma structure multi-millijoule energy, single-cycle, long-wavelength IR (3-20 $μ$m) pulses can be generated by using an 810 nm Ti:sapphire drive laser. Here w…
We report enhanced broadband Terahertz (THz) generation and detailed characterization from the interaction of femtosecond two colour laser pulses with thin transparent dielectric tape target in ambient air. The proposed source is easy to implement, exhibits excellent scalability with laser energy. Spectral characterization using Fourier transform spectrometer reveals yield enhancement of more than 150 % in the THz region of 0.1 - 10 THz with respect to conventional two-colour laser plasma source in ambient air. Further, the source spectrum extends up to 40 THz with an enhancement of flux > 30 …
