Using {\it ab initio} approaches for extended Hubbard interactions coupled to phonons, we reveal that the intersite Coulomb interaction plays important roles in determining various distinctive phases of the paradigmatic charge ordered materials of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x A$O$_3$ ($A=$ Bi and Sb). We demonstrated that all their salient doping dependent experiment features such as breathing instabilities, anomalous phonon dispersions, and transition between charge-density wave and superconducting states can be accounted very well if self-consistently obtained nearest neighbor Hubbard interaction are included, thus establishing a minimal criterion for reliable descriptions of spontaneous charge orders in solids.
The effect of the strong intersite Coulomb correlations on the formation of the electron structure of the t-V-model has been studied. A qualitatively new result has been obtained which consists in the occurrence of a split-off band of the Fermi states. The spectral intensity of this band increases with the enhancement of a doping level and is determined by the mean-square fluctuation of the occupation numbers. This leads to the qualitative change in the structure of the electron density of states.
For superconducting nanowire with the pairing of extended s-type symmetry, Rashba spin-orbit interaction in a magnetic field, the influence of strong intersite charge correlations on single-particle Majorana excitations is analyzed. This problem is investigated on the basis of the density matrix renormalization group numerical method. It is shown that with an increase in the repulsion intensity of electrons located at the neighboring sites, two subbands emerge in the lower Hubbard band of the open system. Based on calculations of the Majorana polarization and degeneracy of the entanglement spe…
The theory of correlated electrons is currently moving beyond the paradigmatic Hubbard $U$, towards the investigation of intersite Coulomb interactions. Recent investigations have revealed that these interactions are relevant for the quantitative description of realistic materials. Physically, intersite interactions are responsible for two rather different effects: screening and bandwidth renormalization. We use a variational principle to disentangle the roles of these two processes and study how appropriate the recently proposed Fock treatment of intersite interactions is in correlated system…
We study the Gutzwiller method for the spinless fermion model in one dimension, which is one of the simplest models that incorporates the intersite Coulomb interaction. The Gutzwiller solution of this model has been studied in the literature but with differing results. We obtain the Gutzwiller solution of the problem by a careful enumeration of the many-particle configurations and explain the origin of the discrepancy in the literature to be due to the neglect of the correlation between the neighbouring bond occupancies. The correct implementation of the Gutzwiller approach yields results diff…
We analyze in detail a behavior of the order parameter in the half-filled extended Falicov-Kimball model for small Coulomb interactions (both onsite $U$ and intersite $V$). The parameter is defined as the difference of localized electron concentrations in both sublattices of the Bethe lattice (in the limit of large coordination number). Using two methods, namely, the dynamic mean field theory and the Hartree-Fock approximation, we found the ranges of $U$ and $V$ for which the anomalous temperature dependence of the order parameter, characterized by the sharp reduction near $T \approx T_{\textr…
In the first part of the paper, we study the stability of antiferromagnetic (AF), charge density wave (CDW), and superconducting (SC) states within the $t$-$J$-$U$-$V$ model of strongly correlated electrons by using the statistically consistent Gutzwiller approximation (SGA). We concentrate on the role of the intersite Coulomb interaction term $V$ in stabilizing the CDW phase. In particular, we show that the charge ordering appears only above a critical value of $V$ in a limited hole-doping range $δ$. The effect of the $V$ term on SC and AF phases is that a strong interaction suppresses SC, wh…
The strong-coupling perturbation theory (SCPT) for correlated electron systems is extended to the case of full Coulomb interaction. The Coulomb mechanism of the orbital polarization is discussed and attention is paid to the importance of spectral weight transfer between the localized and delocalized subsystems of electrons. A one-to-one correspondence between subsets of Feynman graphs of SCPT (which we name the approximation of renormalized Fermions (ARF)) and weak-coupling perturbation theory (WCPT) is established. The comparison of the Galitskii and Migdal expression for the total energy and…

In this work, we report the pressure dependence of the effective Coulomb interaction parameters (Hubbard U) in paramagnetic NiO within the constrained random phase approximation (cRPA). We consider five different low energy models starting from the most expensive one that treats both Ni-d and O-p states as correlated orbitals (dp-dp model) to the smallest possible two-orbital model comprising the eg states only (eg-eg model). We find that in all the considered models, the bare interactions are not very sensitive to the compression. However the partially screened interaction parameters show an …
We study the one- and two- dimensional extended Hubbard model by means of the Composite Operator Method within the 2-pole approximation. The fermionic propagator is computed fully self-consistently as a function of temperature, filling and Coulomb interactions. The behaviors of the chemical potential (global indicator) and of the double occupancy and nearest-neighbor density- density correlator (local indicators) are analyzed in detail as primary sources of information regarding the instability of the paramagnetic (metal and insulator) phase towards charge ordering driven by the intersite Coul…
A simple effective model of charge ordered insulators is studied. The tight binding Hamiltonian consists of the effective on-site interaction U and the intersite density-density interactions Wij (both: nearest-neighbour and next-nearest-neighbour). In the analysis of the phase diagrams we have adopted the variational approach, which treats the on-site interaction term exactly and the intersite interactions within the mean-field approximation. The phase separated states have not been taken into account in previous analyses. Our investigations of two cases of the on-site interaction: attraction …
The three-band Emery model is applied to study the selected principal features of the $d$-$wave$ superconducting phase in the copper-based compounds. The electron-electron correlations are taken into account by the use of the diagrammatic expansion of the Guztwiller wave function (DE-GWF) method. The nodal Fermi velocity, Fermi momentum and effective mass are all determined in the paired state and show relatively good agreement with the available experimental data, as well as with the corresponding single-band calculations. Additionally, the influence of the next-nearest neighbor oxygen-oxygen…
We develop an extension of the Gutzwiller Approximation (GA) formalism that includes the effects of Coulomb interactions of arbitrary range (including density density, exchange, pair hopping and Coulomb assisted hopping terms). This formalism reduces to the ordinary GA formalism for the multi-band Hubbard models in the presence of only local interactions. This is accomplished by combining the 1/z expansion -- where z is the coordination number and only the leading order terms contribute in the limit of infinite dimensions -- with a P^2-I expansion, where P is the Gutzwiller projector. The meth…
We analyze the effect of intersite-interaction terms on the stability of the coexisting superconucting-nematic phase (SC+N) within the extended Hubbard and $t$-$J$-$U$ models on the square lattice. In order to take into account the correlation effects with a proper precision, we use the approach based on the \textit{diagrammatic expansion of the Gutzwiller wave function} (DE-GWF), which goes beyond the renormalized mean field theory (RMFT) in a systematic manner. As a starting point of our analysis we discuss the stability region of the SC+N phase on the intrasite Coulomb repulsion-hole doping…
We investigate the electron-energy loss spectrum of one-dimensional undoped CuO$_{3}$ chains within an extended multi-band Hubbard model and an extended one-band Hubbard model, using the standard Lanczos algorithm. Short-range intersite Coulomb interactions are explicitly included in these models, and long-range interactions are treated in random-phase approximation. The results for the multi-band model with standard parameter values agree very well with experimental spectra of Sr$_{2}$CuO$_{3}$. In particular, the width of the main structure is correctly reproduced for all values of momentum …
A possible ground state of NaV_2O_5 is proposed based on the Hartree approximation for both on-site and intersite Coulomb interactions. The results indicate that the intersite Coulomb interaction induces a zigzag type of charge disproportionation (i.e. charge ordering) along the ladders of V-ions resulting in the localized spins between neighboring ladders to form a spin gap. This new state, which is different from the spin-Peierls state so far believed, seems to be consistent with the existing experimental results.
A simple effective model for a description of magnetically ordered insulators is analysed. The tight binding Hamiltonian consists of the effective on-site interaction (U) and intersite magnetic exchange interactions (Jz, Jxy) between nearest-neighbours. The phase diagrams of this model have been determined within the variational approach, which treats the on-site interaction term exactly and the intersite interactions within the mean-field approximation. We show that, depending on the values of interaction parameters and the electron concentration, the system can exhibit not only homogeneous p…
We discuss a reduction of superconducting transition temperature by the intersite Coulomb repulsion for the d-wave pairing in cuprates. We compare the results found for the spin-fermion model and the extended Hubbard model. We argue that in both the models the d-wave superconducting transition temperature is reduced by the Coulomb repulsion of holes in different unit cells. We also show that in the strong correlation limit the s-wave superconductivity cannot occur due to the kinematic restriction of no double occupancy in the Hubbard subbands.
In this paper the two dimensional extended Hubbard model with intersite magnetic Ising-like interaction in the atomic limit is analyzed by means of the classical Monte Carlo method in the grand canonical ensemble. Such an effective simple model could describe behavior of insulating (anti)ferromagnets. In the model considered the Coulomb interaction ($U$) is on-site and the magnetic interactions in $z$-direction ($J>0$, antiferromagnetic) are restricted to nearest-neighbors. Simulations of the model have been performed on a square lattice consisting of $N=L\times L=400$ sites ($L=20$) in order …
We investigate the Landau parameters for the instabilities in spin and charge channels in the nondegenerate extended Hubbard model with intersite Coulomb and exchange interactions. To this aim we use the spin rotationally invariant slave boson approach and we determine the necessary inverse propagator matrix. The analytically derived spin Landau parameter $F_0^a$ for the half filled band uncovers the intrinsic instability of the nondegenerate Hubbard model towards ferromagnetism --- negative intersite exchange interaction triggers a ferromagnetic instability at half filling before the metal-in…
To treat effects of electron correlations in geometrically frustrated pyrochlore and checkerboard lattices, an extended single-orbital Hubbard model with nearest neighbor hopping $\sim t$ and Coulomb repulsion $\sim V$ is applied. Infinite on-site repulsion, $U\to\infty$, is assumed, thus double occupancies of sites are forbidden completely in the present study. A variational Gutzwiller type approach is extended to examine correlations due to short-range $V-$interaction and a cluster approximation is developed to evaluate a variational ground state energy of the system. Obtained analytically i…
We propose a microscopic theory of superconductivity for systems with strong electron correlations such as cuprates in the framework of the extended Hubbard model where the intersite Coulomb repulsion and electron-phonon interaction are taken into account. The Dyson equation for the normal and pair Green functions for the Hubbard operators (HOs) is derived. Due to the unconventional commutation relations for the HOs, a specific kinematical interaction of electrons with spin and charge fluctuations with a large coupling constant of the order of the kinetic energy of electrons $W$ emerges that r…
A microscopic theory of superconductivity in the extended Hubbard model which takes into account the intersite Coulomb repulsion and electron-phonon interaction is developed in the limit of strong correlations. The Dyson equation for normal and pair Green functions expressed in terms of the Hubbard operators is derived. The self-energy is obtained in the noncrossing approximation. In the normal state, antiferromagnetic short-range correlations result in the electronic spectrum with a narrow bandwidth. We calculate superconducting Tc by taking into account the pairing mediated by charge and spi…
We investigate the microscopic mechanisms of the charge-density-wave (CDW) formation in a monolayer TiSe$_2$ using a realistic multiorbital $d$-$p$ model with electron-phonon coupling and intersite Coulomb (excitonic) interactions. First, we estimate the tight-binding bands of Ti $3d$ and Se $4p$ orbitals in the monolayer TiSe$_2$ on the basis of the first-principles band structure calculations. We thereby show orbital textures of the undistorted band structure near the Fermi level. Next, we derive the electron-phonon coupling using the tight-binding approximation and show that the softening o…
Coulomb interaction between electrons on p-orbitals of oxygen atom in strongly correlated compounds is not negligible, since its value (U_p) has comparable order of magnitude with the value of Coulomb interaction on d-orbitals of transition metal atom (U_d). We investigate the effect of taking into account Coulomb correlations in oxygen p-shell in addition to the correlations in the transition metal d-shell in frame of the LDA+U method. Our calculations for NiO, MnO and La2CuO4 show that this additional correction in general improves the agreement with experimental data for the spectral (energ…
Using the Lanczos exact-diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group methods, we study the extended Hubbard model at quarter filling defined on the anisotropic triangular lattice. We focus on charge ordering (CO) phenomena induced by onsite and intersite Coulomb interactions. We determine the ground-state phase diagram including three CO phases, i.e., diagonal, vertical, and three-fold CO phases, based on the calculated results of the hole density and double occupancy. We also calculate the dynamical density-density correlation functions and find possible coexistence of the diagona…
Quantum Monte Carlo Simulation of Bipolaron Superconductivity in Extended Hubbard--Holstein models on Face-Centered-Cubic and Body-Centered-Cubic Lattices
We describe a recent implementation of the combined GW and dynamical mean field (DMFT) method "GW+DMFT" for the two-dimensional Hubbard model with on-site and nearest-neighbor repulsion. We clarify the relation of the GW+DMFT scheme to alternative approaches in the literature, and discuss the corresponding approximations to the free energy functional of the model. Furthermore, we describe a numerically exact technique for the self-consistent solution of the GW+DMFT equations, namely the hybridization expansion continuous-time algorithm for solving the dynamical impurity model that arises withi…
We explore the two-dimensional extended Hubbard model on the triangular lattice in the high doping regime. On-site and nearest-neighbour repulsive interactions are treated in a non-perturbative way by means of Extended Dynamical Mean Field Theory. We compute the low-temperature phase diagram, displaying a metallic phase and a symmetry-broken phase for strong intersite repulsions. We describe the correlation effects on both single-particle and two-particle observables in the metallic phase. Whereas single-particle spectra feature a Hubbard satellite typical of strongly correlated systems, local…
We have analyzed the coexisting charge and orbital ordering in half-doped manganites using a model which includes Coulomb and Jahn-Teller orbital polarization interactions. Most surprisingly, the gap in the optical conductivity is reduced by both on-site and intersite Coulomb interactions, but increases and explains the experimental results when the Jahn-Teller terms with orbital polarization are considered. The origin of this behavior is explained within a molecular model which arises in the limit of extreme topological frustration, when single electrons are confined to molecular units consis…
The Hubbard model with additional intersite interaction `$V$' (the extended Hubbard model) is investigated by the correlator projection method (CPM). CPM is a newly developed numerical method which combines the equation-of-motion approach and the dynamical mean-field theory. Using this method, properties of the extended Hubbard Model at quarter filling are discussed with special emphasis on the metal-insulator transition induced by electron-electron correlations. The result shows a metal-insulator transition to a charge ordered insulator with antiferromagnetic order at low temperatures, but a …
The phase diagram of half-doped manganite systems of formula A_{0.5}A'_{0.5}MnO_3 is investigated within a single-orbital model incorporating magnetic double-exchange and superexchange, together with intersite Coulomb and electron-lattice interactions. Strong Jahn-Teller and breathing mode deformations compete together and result in shear lattice deformations. The latters stabilize the charge-ordered CE-type phase, which undergo first-order transitions with temperature or magnetic field to either Ferromagnetic metallic or Paramagnetic insulating phases. An essential feature is the self-consist…
We have studied the extended Hubbard model in the atomic limit. The Hamiltonian analyzed consists of the effective on-site interaction U and the intersite density-density interactions Wij (both: nearest-neighbour and next-nearest-neighbour). The model can be considered as a simple effective model of charge ordered insulators. The phase diagrams and thermodynamic properties of this system have been determined within the variational approach, which treats the on-site interaction term exactly and the intersite interactions within the mean-field approximation. Our investigation of the general case…
We present results of the magneto-crystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) calculations for chemically ordered $L1_0$ CoPt and FePt alloys taking into account the effects of strong electronic correlations and spin-orbit coupling. The local spin density + Hubbard U approximation (LSDA+U) is shown to provide a consistent picture of the magnetic ground state properties when intra-atomic Coulomb correlations are included for both 3$d$ and 5$d$ elements. Our results demonstrate significant and complex contribution of correlation effects to large MAE of these material.
Effects of geometrical frustration in low-dimensional charge ordering systems are theoretically studied, mainly focusing on dynamical properties. We treat extended Hubbard models at quarter-filling, where the frustration arises from competing charge ordered patterns favored by different intersite Coulomb interactions, which are effective models for various charge transfer-type molecular conductors and transition metal oxides. Two different lattice structures are considered: (a) one-dimensional chain with intersite Coulomb interaction of nearest neighbor V_1 and that of next-nearest neighbor V_…
We propose a nonlocal theory of single-particle excitations. It is based on an off-diagonal effective medium and the projection operator method for treating the retarded Green function. The theory determines the nonlocal effective medium matrix elements by requiring that they are consistent with those of the self-energy of the Green function. This arrows for a description of long-range intersite correlations with high resolution in momentum space. Numerical study for the half-filled Hubbard model on the simple cubic lattice demonstrates that the theory is applicable to the strong correlation r…
A simple model of charge ordering is considered. It is shown explicitly that at any deviation from half-filling ($n \neq 1/2$) the system is unstable with respect to phase separation into charge ordered regions with $n = 1/2$ and metallic regions with smaller electron or hole density. Possible structure of this phase-separated state (metallic droplets in a charge-ordered matrix)is discussed. The model is extended to account for the strong Hund-rule onsite coupling and the weaker intersite antiferromagnetic exchange. An analysis of this extended model allows us to determine the magnetic structu…
The electronic properties of single-layer antimony are studied by a combination of first-principles and tight-binding methods. The band structure obtained from relativistic density functional theory is used to derive an analytic tight-binding model that offers an efficient and accurate description of single-particle electronic states in a wide spectral region up to the mid-UV. The strong ($λ=0.34$ eV) intra-atomic spin-orbit interaction plays a fundamental role in the band structure, leading to splitting of the valence band edge and to a significant reduction of the effective mass of the hole …
A consistent microscopic theory of superconductivity for strongly correlated electronic systems is presented. The Dyson equation for the normal and anomalous Green functions for the projected (Hubbard) electronic operators is derived. To compare various mechanisms of pairing, the extended Hubbard model is considered where the intersite Coulomb repulsion and the electron-phonon interaction are taken into account. We obtain the $d$-wave pairing with high-$T_c$ induced by the strong kinematical interaction of electrons with spin fluctuations, while the Coulomb repulsion and the electron-phonon in…
We study with exact diagonalization the zero temperature properties of the quarter-filled extended Hubbard model on a square lattice. We find that increasing the ratio of the intersite Coulomb repulsion, $V$, to the band width drives the system from a metal to a charge ordered insulator. The evolution of the optical conductivity spectrum with increasing $V$ is compared to the observed optical conductivity of several layered molecular crystals with the theta and beta'' crystal structures.
We study how the electron-electron interactions influence the charge distributions in the metallic state of quasicrystals. As a simple theoretical model, we introduce an extended Hubbard model on the Penrose lattice, and numerically solve the model (up to $\sim1.4$ million sites) within the Hartree-Fock approximation. Because each site on the quasiperiodic lattice has a different local geometry, the Coulomb interaction, in particular the intersite one, works in a site-dependent way, leading to a nontrivial redistribution of the charge. The resultant charge distribution patterns are not multifr…
In this article, we propose an energy functional at the level of DFT+U+V that allows us to compute self-consistently the values of the on-site interaction, Hubbard U and Hund J, as well as the intersite interaction V. This functional extends the previously proposed ACBN0 functional [Phys. Rev. X 5, 011006 (2015)] including both on-site and intersite interactions. We show that this ab initio self-consistent functional yields improved electronic properties for a wide range of materials, ranging from $sp$ materials to strongly-correlated materials. This functional can also be seen as an alternati…
We investigate the spin-ordered states in multilayer massless Dirac fermion systems under magnetic fields, in which the intralayer interaction is ferromagnetic owing to the exchange interaction, while the interlayer interaction is antiferromagnetic arising from the interlayer hopping and the on-site Coulomb repulsion. The possible spin-ordered states are examined within the mean field theory, and we apply it to alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3, which is a multilayer massless Dirac fermion system under pressure. In the weak interlayer coupling regime the system exhibits a ferromagnetically spin-ordered stat…
We present studies of an effective model which is a simple generalization of the standard model of a local pair superconductor with on-site pairing (i.e., the model of hard core bosons on a lattice) to the case of finite pair binding energy. The tight binding Hamiltonian consists of (i) the effective on-site interaction U, (ii) the intersite density-density interactions W between nearest-neighbours, and (iii) the intersite charge exchange term I, determining the hopping of electron pairs between nearest-neighbour sites. In the analysis of the phase diagrams and thermodynamic properties of this…
We study the Holstein-Hubbard model at half filling to explore ordered phases including su- perconductivity (SC), antiferromagnetism (AF), and charge order (CO) in situations where the electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions are strong (~ electronic bandwidth). The model is solved in the dynamical mean-field approximation using a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver. We determine the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) and the SC order parameter and show that the phonon-induced retardation or the strong Coulomb interaction leads to a significant reduction and …
We employ the Gutzwiller variational approach to investigate the interplay of Coulomb interaction and spin-orbit coupling in a three-orbital Hubbard model. Already in the paramagnetic phase we find a substantial renormalization of the spin-orbit coupling that enters the effective single-particle Hamiltonian for the quasi-particles. Only close to half band-filling and for sizable Coulomb interaction we observe clear signatures of Hund's atomic rules for spin, orbital, and total angular momentum. For a finite local Hund's-rule exchange interaction we find a ferromagnetically ordered state. The s…
Multiorbital systems away from global half-filling host intriguing physical properties promoted by Hund's coupling. Despite increasing awareness of this regime dubbed Hund's metal, effect of nonlocal interaction is still elusive. Here we study a three-orbital model with $1/3$ filling (two electrons per site) including the intersite Coulomb interaction ($V$). Using the $GW$ plus extended dynamical mean-field theory, the valence-skipping charge order transition is shown to be driven by $V$. Most interestingly, the instability to this transition is significantly enhanced in the spin-freezing cros…
We investigate the stability of the charge exchange (CE) phase within a microscopic model which describes a single plane as in La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$. The model includes Coulomb interactions (on-site and intersite), the Jahn-Teller term and the superexchange interactions due to $e_g$ and $t_{2g}$ electrons. By investigating the phase diagram at T=0 in mean-field approximation we conclude that the superexchange interactions can stabilize the CE phase, but only if they are stronger than estimated from spectroscopy.
A consistent microscopic theory of superconductivity for strongly correlated electronic systems is presented within the extended t-J-V model where the intersite Coulomb repulsion and the electron-phonon interaction are taken into account. The exact Dyson equation for the normal and anomalous (pair) Green functions is derived for the projected (Hubbard) electronic operators. The equation is solved in the self-consistent Born approximation for the self-energy. We obtain the d-wave pairing with high-Tc induced by the strong kinematical interaction of the order of the kinetic energy $\sim t$ of el…
We theoretically investigate the competition between charge-ordered state and Mott insulating state at finite temperatures in quarter-filled quasi-one-dimensional electron systems, by studying dimerized extended Hubbard chains with interchain Coulomb interactions. In order to take into account one-dimensional fluctuations properly, we apply the bosonization method to an effective model obtained by the interchain mean-field approximation. The results show that lattice dimerization, especially in the critical region, and frustration in the interchain Coulomb interactions reduce the charge-orderi…
The phenomenon associated with inhomogeneous distribution of electron density is known as a charge ordering. In this work, we study the zero-bandwidth limit of the extended Hubbard model, which can be considered as a simple effective model of charge ordered insulators. It consists of the on-site interaction $U$ and the intersite density-density interactions $W_1$ and $W_2$ between nearest-neighbors and next-nearest neighbors, respectively. We derived the exact ground state diagrams for different lattice dimensionalities and discuss effects of small finite temperatures in the limit of high dime…
The charge ordering phenomena in quasi two-dimensional 1/4-filled organic compounds (ET)_2X (ET=BEDT-TTF) are investigated theoretically for the $θ$ and $α$-type structures, based on the Hartree approximation for the extended Hubbard models with both on-site and intersite Coulomb interactions. It is found that charge ordered states of stripe-type are stabilized for the relevant values of Coulomb energies, while the spatial pattern of the stripes sensitively depends on the anisotropy of the models. By comparing the results of calculations with the experimental facts, where the effects of quantu…
Within the simplest model of metals, namely a gas of electrons with Coulomb interactions, in the presence of a uniform background of positive charge to enforce electric neutrality of the system, we have derived a mechanism, by which the Coulomb interaction between the electrons generates a new kind of magnetism. The ground state of the metal is represented by a magnetically ordered state described by a non-local magnetic field. This non-local magnetic field does not produce spin polarisation of electrons, but induces a special long range correlation between electrons of opposite spin. This mec…
