We study how the microstates of BPS sectors in string theory are organized in the dual $U(N)$ gauge theory. The microstates take the form of a coherent sum of stacks of branes and their open/closed string excitations. We propose a prescription to holographically construct the indices of string/brane configurations by analyzing the modifications of determinant operators in gauge theory. The string/brane configurations should be interpreted in the tensionless limit, but their indices are well-defined at finite $N$. In various examples, we provide evidence that a sum, of the giant graviton-type recently proposed in the literature, over all such configurations gives the finite $N$ gauge theory index. Finally, we discuss how these microstates assemble in the BPS Hilbert space and in what circumstances the branes can form bound states to produce black hole degeneracies.
We derive a precise dictionary between micro-state geometries and open string condensates for a large class of excitations of four dimensional BPS black holes realised in terms of D3-branes intersecting on a six-torus. The complete multipole expansion of the supergravity solutions at weak coupling is extracted from string amplitudes involving one massless closed string and multiple open strings insertions on disks with mixed boundary conditions.
We construct the first smooth, horizonless ``microstate geometries'' that have the same charges, dipole charges and angular momenta as a BPS black ring whose horizon is macroscopic. These solutions have exactly the same geometry as black rings, except that the usual infinite throat is smoothly capped off at a very large depth. If the solutions preserve a U(1)x U(1) isometry, then this depth is limited by flux quantization but if this symmetry is broken then the throat can be made arbitrarily deep by tuning classical, geometric moduli. Interpreting these ``abysses'' (smooth microstate geometrie…
In this paper we explicitly obtain the leading corrections to the SU(N) N=2 prepotential due to stringy instantons both in flat space-time and in the presence of a non-trivial graviphoton background field. We show that the stringy corrections to the prepotential are expressible in terms of the elementary symmetric polynomials. For N>2 the theory is not conformal; we discuss the introduction of an explicit dependence on the string scale α' in the low-energy effective action through the stringy non-perturbative sector.
Using D3/D(-1) brane set-up in type IIB string theory we introduce gauge-stringy instantons in N=2 U(N) supersymmetry theories with one matter multiplet in symmetric representation. In addition to the gauge and stringy moduli there exist extra zero modes that we refer to as "gauge-stringy" moduli. We show that the measure of the moduli space in this model becomes dimensionless for arbitary N when the gauge instanton charge k_g is equal to the stringy instanton charge k_s. This property of gauge-stringy instantons leads to having equal contributions from all instanton charges k_s=k_g=k in the e…
We provide a universal microscopic counting for the microstates of the asymptotically AdS black holes and black strings that arise as solutions of the half-maximal gauged supergravity in four and five dimensions. These solutions can be embedded in all M-theory and type II string backgrounds with an AdS vacuum and sixteen supercharges and provide an infinite set of examples dual to $\mathcal{N}=2$ and $\mathcal{N}=4$ conformal field theories in four and three dimensions, respectively. The counting is universal and it is performed by either studying the large $N$ limit of the relevant supersymme…
We study the non-perturbative effects induced by stringy instantons on N=2 SU}(N) gauge theories in four dimensions, realized on fractional D3 branes in a C^3/Z_3 orientifold. The stringy instantons, corresponding to D(-1) branes that occupy a node of the orientifold quiver diagram where no D3 brane is present, have the right content of zero-modes to produce non-perturbative terms in the four-dimensional effective action. In the SU(2) theory these terms have the same structure for all instanton numbers and yield a series of non-perturbative corrections to the prepotential. We explicitly comput…
We analyze the structure of heavy multitrace BPS operators in N = 1 superconformal quiver gauge theories that arise on the worldvolume of D3-branes on an affine toric cone. We exhibit a geometric procedure for counting heavy mesonic operators with given U(1) charges. We show that for any fixed linear combination of the U(1) charges, the entropy is maximized when the charges are in certain ratios. This selects preferred directions in the charge space that can be determined with the help of a piece of string. We show that almost all heavy mesonic operators of fixed U(1) charges share a universal…
Five and six dimensional SUSY gauge theories, with one or two compactified directions, are discussed. The 5d theories with the matter hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation are associated with the twisted $XXZ$ spin chain, while the group product case with the bi-fundamental matter corresponds to the higher rank spin chains. The Riemann surfaces for $6d$ theories with fundamental matter and two compact directions are proposed to correspond to the $XYZ$ spin chain based on the Sklyanin algebra. We also discuss the obtained results within the brane and geometrical engeneering framewor…
We explore contributions to the 4D effective superpotential which arise from Euclidean D3 branes (``instantons'') that intersect space-filling D-branes. These effects can perturb the effective field theory on the space-filling branes by nontrivial operators composed of charged matter fields, changing the vacuum structure in a qualitative way in some examples. Our considerations are exemplified throughout by a careful study of a fractional brane configuration on a del Pezzo surface.
We discuss heterotic string theories in two dimensions with gauge groups Spin(24) and Spin(8) x E_8. After compactification the theories exhibit a rich spectrum of states with both winding and momentum. At special points some of these stringy states become massless, leading to new first order phase transitions. For example, the thermal theories exhibit standard thermodynamics below the phase transition, but novel and peculiar behavior above it. In particular, when the radius of the Euclidean circle is smaller than the phase transition point the torus partition function is not given by the ther…
We compute the topologically twisted index for general $\mathcal{N} = 2$ supersymmetric field theories on $\mathbb{H}_2\times S^1$. We also discuss asymptotically $AdS_4$ magnetically charged black holes with hyperbolic horizon, in four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 2$ gauged supergravity. With certain assumptions, put forward by Benini, Hristov and Zaffaroni, we find precise agreement between the black hole entropy and the topologically twisted index, for $ABJM$ theories.
We study the relation between stringy instantons and strong dynamics effects in type IIB toric quiver gauge theories. By exploiting the involutive property of Seiberg duality we relate the classical constraint on the moduli space of the gauge theory with the stringy instanton contribution to the superpotential. The result holds for unitary, orthogonal and symplectic gauge groups.
We discuss supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with the multiple scales in the brane language. The issue concerns N=2 SUSY gauge theories with massive fundamental matter including the UV finite case of $n_{f}=2n_c$, theories involving products of SU(n) gauge groups with bifundamental matter, and the systems with several parameters similar to $Λ_{QCD}$. We argue that the proper integrable systems are, accordingly, twisted XXX SL(2) spin chain, $SL(p)$ magnets and degenerations of the spin Calogero system. The issue of symmetries underlying integrable systems is addressed. Relations with the mono…
We present a string theory realization for the correspondence between quantum integrable models and supersymmetric gauge theories. The quantization results from summing the effects of fundamental strings winding around a compact direction. We discuss the examples of the XXZ gauge/Bethe correspondence and five-dimensional Ω--deformed SYM on M x S^1.
We study the superconfomal index of four-dimensional toric quiver gauge theories using a Bethe Ansatz approach recently applied by Benini and Milan. Relying on a particular set of solutions to the corresponding Bethe Ansatz equations we evaluate the superconformal index in the large $N$ limit, thus avoiding to take any Cardy-like limit. We present explicit results for theories arising as a stack of $N$ D3 branes at the tip of toric Calabi-Yau cones: the conifold theory, the suspended pinch point gauge theory, the first del Pezzo theory and $Y^{p,q}$ quiver gauge theories. For a suitable choice…
The non-perturbative dynamics of quantum field theories is studied using theoretical tools inspired by string formalism. Two main lines are developed: the analysis of stringy instantons in a class of four-dimensional N=2 gauge theories and the holographic study of the minimal model for a strongly coupled unbalanced superconductor. The field theory instanton calculus admits a natural and efficient description in terms of D-brane models. In addition, the string viewpoint offers the possibility of generalizing the ordinary instanton configurations. Even though such generalized, or stringy, instan…
We show that thermal noncommutative field theories admit a version of `channel duality' reminiscent of open/closed string duality, where non-planar thermal loops can be replaced by an infinite tower of tree-level exchanges of effective fields. These effective fields resemble closed strings in three aspects: their mass spectrum is that of closed-string winding modes, their interaction vertices contain extra moduli, and they can be regarded as propagating in a higher-dimensional `bulk' space-time. In noncommutative models that can be embedded in a D-brane, we show the precise relation between th…
A complete proof of the No-ghost Theorem for bosonic and fermionic string theories on AdS_3, or the group manifold of SU(1,1), is given. It is then shown that the restriction on the spin (in terms of the level) that is necessary to obtain a ghost-free spectrum corresponds to the stringy exclusion principle of Maldacena and Strominger.
We discuss the problem of introducing background spacetimes of the de Sitter type (quintessential backgrounds) in the context of fundamental theories involving supersymmetry. The role of a model presented in 1984, showing that these backgrounds can occur as spontaneously broken phases of locally supersymmetric 4D, N-extended theories, is highlighted. The present twin challenges of the presumed presence of supersymmetry in particle physics and the emergence of experimental evidence for a positive cosmological constant from type-II supernovae data are noted for the continued investigation of sup…
A class of solutions of the low energy string theory in four dimensions is studied. This class admits a geodesic, shear-free null congruence which is non-twisting but in general diverging and the corresponding solutions in Einstein's theory form the Robinson-Trautman family together with a subset of the Kundt's class. The Robinson-Trautman conditions are found to be frame invariant in string theory. The Lorentz Chern-Simons three form of the stringy Robinson-Trautman solutions is shown to be always closed. The stringy generalizations of the vacuum Robinson-Trautman equation are obtained and th…
The well known N=2 string theory describes self-dual gravity, as was shown by Ooguri and Vafa sometime ago. In search of a variant of this theory which would describe self-dual supergravity in 2+2 dimensions, we have constructed two new N=2 strings theories in which the target space is a superspace. Both theories contain massless scalar and spinor fields in their spectrum, and one of them has spacetime supersymmetry. However, we find that the interactions of these fields do not correspond to those of self-dual supergravity. In our construction, we have used the basic (2,2) superspace variables…
The exact entropy of two-charge supersymmetric black holes in N=4 string theories is computed to all orders using Wald's formula and the supersymmetric attractor equations with an effective action that includes the relevant higher curvature terms. Classically, these black holes have zero area but the attractor equations are still applicable at the quantum level. The quantum corrected macroscopic entropy agrees precisely with the microscopic counting for an infinite tower of fundamental string states to all orders in an asymptotic expansion.
We show that string duality relates M-theory on a local Calabi-Yau fourfold singularity X4 to type IIA string theory on a Calabi-Yau threefold X3 fibered over a real line, with RR 2-form fluxes turned on. The RR flux encodes how the M-theory circle is fibered over the IIA geometry. The theories on N D2 branes probing X3 are the well-known quiver theories with N=2 supersymmetry in three dimensions. We show that turning on fluxes, and fibering the X3 over a direction transverse to the branes, corresponds to turning on N=2 Chern-Simons couplings. String duality implies that, in the strong couplin…
We study three-dimensional consistent truncations of type IIB supergravity which admit warped AdS$_3$ solutions. These theories contain subsectors that have no bulk dynamics. We show that the symplectic form for these theories, when restricted to the non-dynamical subsectors, equals the symplectic form for pure Einstein gravity in AdS$_3$. Consequently, for each consistent choice of boundary conditions in AdS$_3$, we can define a consistent phase space in warped AdS$_3$ with identical conserved charges. This way, we easily obtain a Virasoro $\times$ Virasoro asymptotic symmetry algebra in warp…
We consider black holes in anti-de Sitter space AdS_{p+2} (p = 2,3,5), which have hyperbolic, flat or spherical event horizons. The $O(α'^3)$ corrections (or the leading corrections in powers of the eleven-dimensional Planck length) to the black hole metrics are computed for the various topologies and dimensions. We investigate the consequences of the stringy or M-theory corrections for the black hole thermodynamics. In particular, we show the emergence of a stable branch of small spherical black holes. We obtain the corrected Hawking-Page transition temperature for black holes with spherical …
D-brane instantons can perturb the quantum field theories on space-time filling D-branes by interesting operators. In some cases, these D-brane instantons are novel "stringy" effects (not interpretable directly as instanton effects in the low-energy quantum field theory), while in others the D-brane instantons can be directly interpreted as field theory effects. In this note, we describe a situation where both perspectives are available, by studying stringy instantons in quivers which arise at simple Calabi-Yau singularities. We show that a stringy instanton which wraps an unoccupied node of t…
We consider aspects of the role of stringy scales and Hagedorn temperatures in the correspondence between various field theories and AdS-type spaces. The boundary theory is set on a toroidal world-volume to enable small scales to appear in the supergravity backgrounds also for low field-theory temperatures. We find that thermodynamical considerations tend to favour background manifolds with no string-size characteristic scales. The gravitational dynamics censors the reliable exposure of Hagedorn physics on the supergravity side, and the system does not allow the study of the Hagedorn scale by …
We present a pedagogical introduction into noncommutative gauge theories, their stringy origin, and non-perturbative effects, including monopole and instanton solutions
We define and describe simple complex Lie superalgbras of vector fields on "supercircles" - simple stringy superalgebras. There are four series of such algebras and four exceptional stringy superalgebras. The 13 of the simple stringy Lie superalgebras are distinguished: only they have nontrivial central extensions; since two of the distinguish algebras have 3 nontrivial central extensions each, there are exactly 16 superizations of the Liouville action, Schroedinger equation, KdV hierarchy, etc. We also present the three nontrivial cocycles on the N=4 extended Neveu-Schwarz and Ramond superalg…
The structure of stringy quantum corrections to four-dimensional effective theories is particularly interesting for string phenomenology and attempts to stabilize moduli. We consider the heterotic string compactified on a Calabi-Yau space. For this case, we compute the leading corrections to the kinetic terms of moduli fields. The structure of these corrections is largely dictated by the underlying higher-dimensional extended supersymmetry. We find corrections generically of order (alpha')^2 rather than of order (alpha')^3 found in type II compactifications or heterotic compactifications with …
N=2 quiver Chern-Simons theory has lately attracted attention as the world volume theory of multiple M2 branes on a Calabi-Yau 4-fold. We study the connection between the stringy derivation of M2 brane theories and the forward algorithm which gives the toric Calabi-Yau 4-fold as the moduli space of the quiver theory. Then the existence of the 3+1 dimensional parent, which is the consistent 3+1 dimensional superconformal theory with the same quiver diagram, is crucial for stringy derivation of M2 brane theories. We also investigate the construction of M2 brane theories that do not have 3+1 dime…
We study aspects of obtaining field theories with noncommuting time-space coordinates as limits of open-string theories in constant electric-field backgrounds. We find that, within the standard closed-string backgrounds, there is an obstruction to decoupling the time-space noncommutativity scale from that of the string fuzziness scale. We speculate that this censorship may be string-theory's way of protecting the causality and unitarity structure. We study the moduli space of the obstruction in terms of the open- and closed-string backgrounds. Cases of both zero and infinite brane tensions as …
Black holes are a powerful setting for studying general relativity and theories beyond GR. However, analytical solutions for rotating black holes in beyond-GR theories are difficult to find because of the complexity of such theories. In this paper, we solve for the deformation to the near-horizon extremal Kerr metric due to two example string-inspired beyond-GR theories: Einstein-dilaton-Gauss-Bonnet, and dynamical Chern-Simons theory. We accomplish this by making use of the enhanced symmetry group of NHEK and the weak-coupling limit of EdGB and dCS. We find that the EdGB metric deformation ha…
We study the large $N$ expansion of twisted partition functions of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories arising from $N$ M5-branes wrapped on a hyperbolic 3-manifold, $M_3$. Via the 3d-3d correspondence, the partition functions of these 3d ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal field theories are related to simple topological invariants on the 3-manifold. The partition functions can be expressed using only classical and one-loop perturbative invariants of $PSL(N,\mathbb{C})$ Chern-Simons theory around irreducible flat connections on $M_3$. Using mathematical results on the asymptotics of the …
A large class of two dimensional quantum gravity theories of Jackiw-Teitelboim form have a description in terms of random matrix models. Such models, treated fully non-perturbatively, can give an explicit and tractable description of the underlying ``microstate'' degrees of freedom. They play a prominent role in regimes where the smooth geometrical picture of the physics is inadequate. This is shown using a natural tool for extracting the detailed microstate physics, a Fredholm determinant ${\rm det}(\mathbf{1}{-}\mathbf{ K})$. Its associated kernel $K(E,E^\prime)$ can be defined explicitly fo…
Generically, string models with $N=1$ supersymmetry are not expected to have moduli beyond perturbation theory; stringy non-perturbative effects as well as low energy field-theoretic phenomena such as gluino condensation will lift any flat directions. In this note, we describe models where some subspace of the moduli space survives non-perturbatively. Discrete $R$ symmetries forbid any inherently stringy effects, and dynamical considerations control the field-theoretic effects. The surviving subspace is a space of high symmetry; the system is attracted to this subspace by a potential which we …
In these lectures, two different aspects of brane world scenarios in 5d gravity or string theory are discussed. In the first two lectures, work on how warped compactifications of 5d gravity theories can change the guise of the hierarchy problem and the cosmological constant problem is reviewed, and a discussion of several issues which remain unclear in this context is provided. In the next two lectures, microscopic constructions in string theory which involve D-branes wrapped on cycles of Calabi-Yau manifolds are described. The focus is on computing the superpotential in the brane worldvolume …
We show generalized Galileons -- a particular subclass of Horndeski gravity -- arise from a consistent Kaluza-Klein reduction of the low-energy effective action of heterotic string theory to first order in $α'$. This suggests Horndeski theories of gravity have a string-theoretic origin. The form of the Galileonic terms is precisely fixed by parameters of the embedding spacetime, so that only a specific subset of Horndeski theories is permitted by string theory. A novel limit of the model is considered by performing a dimensionful rescaling of $α'$.
We study the Giddings-Strominger wormholes in string theories. We found negative modes among O(4)-symmetric fluctuations about the non-singular wormhole background. Hence the stringy wormhole contribution to the euclidean functional integral is purely imaginary. This means that the stringy wormhole is a bounce (not an instanton) and describes the nucleation and growth of wormholes in the Minkowski spacetime.
We give a detailed microscopic derivation of gauge and stringy instanton generated superpotentials for gauge theories living on D3-branes at Z_3-orientifold singularities. Gauge instantons are generated by D(-1)-branes and lead to Affleck, Dine and Seiberg (ADS) like superpotentials in the effective N=1 gauge theories with three generations of bifundamental and anti/symmetric matter. Stringy instanton effects are generated by Euclidean ED3-branes wrapping four-cycles on T^6/\Z_3. They give rise to Majorana masses in one case and non-renormalizable superpotentials for the other cases. Finally w…
We consider ensemble averaged theories with discrete random variables. We propose a suitable measure to do the ensemble average. We also provide a mathematical description of such ensemble averages of theories in terms of Poisson point processes. Moreover, we demonstrate that averaging theories of this type has an equivalent description as tracing over parts of the microscopic degrees of freedom in a suitable continuous limit of a single microscopic theory. The results from both approaches can be identified with Liouville gravity, of which we further address some implications on the microscopi…
We survey recent results on the exact dyon spectrum in a class of N=4 supersymmetric string theories, and discuss how the results can be understood from the macroscopic viewpoint using AdS_2/CFT_1 correspondence. The comparison between the microscopic and the macroscopic results includes power suppressed corrections to the entropy, the sign of the index, logarithmic corrections and also the twisted index measuring the distribution of discrete quantum numbers among the microstates.
The static potential is investigated in string and membrane theories coupled to $U(1)$ gauge fields (specifically, external magnetic fields) and with antisymmetric tensor fields. The explicit dependence of the potential on the shape of the extended objects is obtained, including a careful calculation of the quantum effects. Noting the features which are common to the dynamics of strings and membranes moving in background fields and to the swimming of micro-organisms in a fluid, the latter problem is studied. The Casimir energy of a micro-organism is estimated, taking into account the quantum e…
We provide a general formula for the refined topologically twisted index of $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauge theories living on the world-volume of D3-branes at conical Calabi-Yau singularities in the Cardy limit. The index is defined as the partition function on $T^2 \times S^2_ω$, with a partial topological twist and a $Ω$-deformation along $S^2$, in the presence of background magnetic fluxes and fugacities for the global symmetries and can be used to study the properties of a class of BPS black strings. To this purpose, we find rotating domain-wall solutions of five-dimensional gauged supergravity int…
Using generic properties of string theories, we show how interesting non-perturbative features of QCD can be exploited in heavy ion collisions. In particular, a generalized "semi-circle" law for the phase diagram in the temperature-chemical potential plane is derived.
We show that the physics of D-brane theories that exhibit dynamical SUSY breaking due to stringy instanton effects is well captured by geometric transitions, which recast the non-perturbative superpotential as a classical flux superpotential. This allows for simple engineering of Fayet, Polonyi, O'Raifeartaigh, and other canonical models of supersymmetry breaking in which an exponentially small scale of breaking can be understood either as coming from stringy instantons or as arising from the classical dynamics of fluxes.
We numerically study the topologically twisted index of several three-dimensional supersymmetric field theories on a genus $g$ Riemann surface times a circle, $Σ_g\times S^1$. We show that for a large class of theories with leading term of the order $N^{3/2}$, where $N$ is generically the rank of the gauge group, there is a universal logarithmic correction of the form $\frac{g-1}{2} \log N$. We explain how this logarithmic subleading correction can be obtained as a one-loop effect on the dual supergravity theory for magnetically charged, asymptotically AdS$_4\times M^7$ black holes for a large…
Closed string theories on orbifolds contain both untwisted and twisted states. The latter are normally assumed to live exactly at the orbifold fixed points. We perform a calculation of a gauge field tadpole amplitude and show that off-shell both the twisted and untwisted states give rise to non-trivial momentum profiles over the orbifold C^3/Z_3. These profiles take the form of Gaussian distributions integrated over the fundamental domain of the modular parameter of the torus. The propagators of the internal coordinate fields on the torus world sheet determine the width of the Gaussian profile…
We analyse the Seiberg Witten curve describing the N=2 gauge theory dual to the supergravity solution with fractional branes. Emphasis is given to those aspects that are related to stringy mechanism known as the enhancon. We also compare our results with the features of the supergravity duals, which have been variously interpreted in the literature. Known aspects of the N=2 gauge theories seem to agree with the supergravity solution, whenever the two theories can be faithfully compared.
The ER = EPR correspondence relates a superposition of entangled, disconnected spacetimes to a connected spacetime with an Einstein-Rosen bridge. We construct examples in which both sides may be described by weakly-coupled string theory. The relation between them is given by a Lorentzian continuation of the FZZ duality of the two-dimensional Euclidean black hole CFT in one example, and in another example by continuation of a similar duality that we propose for the asymptotic Euclidean AdS3 black hole. This gives a microscopic understanding of ER = EPR: one has a worldsheet duality between stri…
We review electric/magnetic duality in $N=4$ (and certain $N=2$) globally supersymmetric gauge theories and show how this duality, which relates strong to weak coupling, follows as a consequence of a string/string duality. Black holes, eleven dimensions and supermembranes also have a part to play in the big picture.
The stringy description for the instabilities in the $RR$ charged $D_{p}-\bar{D}_{p}$ pairs is now well understood in terms of the open string tachyon condensation. The quantum interpretation presumably via the stringy description for the instabilities in the $NSNS$-charged $F1-\bar{F1}$ and $NS5-\bar{NS5}$ pairs in IIA/IIB theories, however, has not been established yet. This would be partly because of the absence (for the $F1-\bar{F1}$ case) or our relatively poor understanding (for the $NS5-\bar{NS5}$ case) of their worldvolume (gauge theory) dynamics. In the present work, using the well-kn…
