We provide a universal microscopic counting for the microstates of the asymptotically AdS black holes and black strings that arise as solutions of the half-maximal gauged supergravity in four and five dimensions. These solutions can be embedded in all M-theory and type II string backgrounds with an AdS vacuum and sixteen supercharges and provide an infinite set of examples dual to $\mathcal{N}=2$ and $\mathcal{N}=4$ conformal field theories in four and three dimensions, respectively. The counting is universal and it is performed by either studying the large $N$ limit of the relevant supersymmetric index of the dual field theory or by using the charged Cardy formula.
We discuss branes whose worldvolume dimension equals the target spacetime dimension, i.e. ``spacetime-filling branes''. In addition to the D9-branes, there are 9-branes in the NS-NS sectors of both the IIA and IIB strings. The worldvolume actions of these branes are constructed, via duality, from the known actions of branes with codimension larger than zero. Each of these types of branes is used in the construction of a string theory with sixteen supercharges by modding out a type II string by an appropriate discrete symmetry and adding 32 9-branes. These constructions are related by a web of …
We consider field theories with sixteen supersymmetries, which includes U(N) Yang-Mills theories in various dimensions, and argue that their large N limit is related to certain supergravity solutions. We study this by considering a system of D-branes in string theory and then taking a limit where the brane worldvolume theory decouples from gravity. At the same time we study the corresponding D-brane supergravity solution and argue that we can trust it in certain regions where the curvature (and the effective string coupling, where appropriate) are small. The supergravity solutions typically ha…
We present two new backgrounds of type IIA string theory preserving 16 supercharges. One is a Wilson line for (-1) to the left-moving spacetime fermion number, and the other is an orbifold by a reflection of four coordinates, along with the action of (-1) to the left-moving spacetime fermion number. The Wilson line theory has many new phenomena, including a self-duality of type IIA on a single circle, enhanced gauge symmetry at the self-dual radius, and a T-duality between uncharged and (locally) charged branes. The orbifold theory also presents many novel features, including charged, stable n…
We formulate supersymmetric Euclidean spacetime Ad* lattices whose classical continuum limits are U(N) supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with sixteen supercharges in d=1,2,3 and 4 dimensions. This family includes the especially interesting N=4 supersymmetry in four dimensions, as well as a Euclidean path integral formulation of Matrix Theory on a one dimensional lattice.
We present the first Monte Carlo results for supersymmetric matrix quantum mechanics with sixteen supercharges at finite temperature. The recently proposed non-lattice simulation enables us to include the effects of fermionic matrices in a transparent and reliable manner. The internal energy nicely interpolates the weak coupling behavior obtained by the high temperature expansion, and the strong coupling behavior predicted from the dual black hole geometry. The Polyakov line takes large values even at low temperature suggesting the absence of a phase transition in sharp contrast to the bosonic…
We consider the dimensional reductions of N=4 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on R x S^3 to the three-dimensional theory on R x S^2, the orbifolded theory on R x S^3/Z_k, and the plane-wave matrix model. With explicit emphasis on the three-dimensional theory, we demonstrate the realization of the SU(2|3) algebra in a radial Hamiltonian framework. Using this structure we constrain the form of the spin chains, their S-matrices, and the corresponding one- and two-loop Hamiltonian of the three dimensional theory and find putative signs of integrability up to the two-loop order. The string duals o…
We study the gauge/gravity duality for supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory in 1+0 dimension with sixteen supercharges using lattice simulations. The conjectured duality states that the gravity side is described by N D0-branes in type IIA superstring at large N, and the thermal gauge theory reproduces the black hole thermodynamics at low temperature. In this paper, we explain the Sugino lattice action used in the simulations in detail, and examine the supersymmetric Ward-Takahashi identity to confirm the restoration of supersymmetry in the continuum limit. We also estimate the internal energ…
We review the holographic duals of gauge theories with eight supercharges obtained by adding very few flavors to pure supersymmetric Yang-Mills with sixteen supercharges. Assuming a brane-probe limit, the gravity duals are engineered in terms of probe branes (the so-called flavor brane) in the background of the color branes. Both types of branes intersect on a given subspace in which the matter is confined. The gauge theory dual is thus the corresponding flavoring of the gauge theory with sixteen supercharges. Those theories have in general a non-trivial phase structure; which is also captured…
We perform lattice simulations of two-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with sixteen supercharges with a lattice action which has two exact supercharges (Sugino lattice action). According to the gauge/gravity duality, the theory at finite temperature is expected to be well described by the corresponding black 1-branes, at low temperature in the large N limit. We aim to confirm the duality conjecture by comparing the lattice results with the theoretical predictions obtained in the gravity side. In this article, at the beginning of this study, we examine the supersymmetric Ward-Takaha…
We study the thermodynamics of maximally supersymmetric U(N) Yang-Mills theory on $\mathds{R}\times S^2$ at large $N$. The model arises as a consistent truncation of ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills on $\mathds{R}\times S^3$ and as the continuum limit of the plane-wave matrix model expanded around the $N$ spherical membrane vacuum. The theory has an infinite number of classical BPS vacua, labeled by a set of monopole numbers, described by dual supergravity solutions. We first derive the Lagrangian and its supersymmetry transformations as a deformation of the usual dimensional reduction of ${\cal …
We analyse the perturbative massive open string spectrum of even dimensional superstring compactifications with four, eight and sixteen supercharges. In each of such cases, we focus on universal states that exist independently on the internal geometry and other compatification details. We analytically compute refined partition functions that count these states at each mass level. Such refined partition functions are written in a super-Poincare covariant form, providing information on how supermultiplets transform under the little group and the R symmetry. Various asymptotic limits of the parti…
We study the two-dimensional Yang--Mills theory with four supercharges in the large-$N$ limit. By using thermal boundary conditions, we analyze the internal energy and the distribution of scalars. We compare their behavior to the maximally supersymmetric case with sixteen supercharges, which is known to admit a holographic interpretation. Our lattice results for the scalar distribution show no visible dependence on $N$ and the energy at strong coupling appears independent of temperature.
In this thesis we study the spectra of supersymmetric states in string theory compactifications with eight and sixteen supercharges, with special focus placed on the quantum states of black holes and the phenomenon of wall-crossing in these theories. A self-contained introduction to the relevant background material is included.
We propose CFT descriptions of the D1/D5 system in a class of freely acting Z_2 orbifolds/orientifolds of type IIB theory, with sixteen unbroken supercharges. The CFTs describing D1/D5 systems involve N=(4,4) or N=(4,0) sigma models on $(R^3\times S^1\times T^4\times (T^4)^N/S_N)/Z_2$, where the action of Z_2 is diagonal and its precise nature depends on the model. We also discuss D1(D5)-brane states carrying non-trivial Kaluza-Klein charges. The resulting multiplicities for two-charge bound states are shown to agree with the predictions of U-duality. We raise a puzzle concerning the multiplic…
This paper addresses a long standing problem, the counting of the microstates of supersymmetric asymptotically AdS black holes in terms of a holographically dual field theory. We focus on a class of asymptotically AdS$_4$ static black holes preserving two real supercharges which are dual to a topologically twisted deformation of the ABJM theory. We evaluate in the large $N$ limit the topologically twisted index of the ABJM theory and we show that it correctly reproduces the entropy of the AdS$_4$ black holes. An extremization of the index with respect to a set of chemical potentials is require…
We study AdS backgrounds of N=4 supergravity in four space-time dimensions which preserve all sixteen supercharges. We show that the graviphotons have to form a subgroup of the gauge group that consists of an electric and a magnetic SO(3)_+ x SO(3)_-. Moreover, these N=4 AdS backgrounds are necessarily isolated points in field space which have no moduli.
We consider five-dimensional supergravity theories with eight or sixteen supercharges with Abelian vector fields and ungauged scalars. We address the question under which conditions these theories can be interpreted as effective low energy descriptions of circle reductions of anomaly free six-dimensional theories with (1,0) or (2,0) supersymmetry. We argue that classical and one-loop gauge- and gravitational Chern-Simons terms are instrumental for this question.
Using higher order corrections we argue that five dimensional N=2 and N=4 small black holes exhibit supersymmetry enhancement in near horizon geometry leading to eight and sixteen supercharges, respectively. Using this enhancement at supergravity level we can identify the global supergroup of the near horizon geometry. In particular we show how this supergroup distinguishes between small and large black holes in N=2 case.
We study the general formulation of gauged supergravity in seven dimensions with sixteen supercharges keeping duality covariance by means of the embedding tensor formalism. We first classify all inequivalent duality orbits of consistent deformations. Secondly, we analyse the complete set of critical points in a systematic way. Interestingly, we find the first examples of stable de Sitter solutions within a theory with such a large amount of supersymmetry.
This thesis focuses mainly on understanding the origin of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy for a class of four- and five-dimensional BPS black holes in string/M-theory. To this aim, important ingredients are holography and supersymmetric localization. Using the method of supersymmetric localization, the Euclidean path integrals for supersymmetric field theories on $Σ_\mathfrak{g} \times T^{n}$ $(n=1,2)$, with at least four real supercharges, can be reduced to a matrix integral that depends on background magnetic fluxes and chemical potentials for the global symmetries of the theory. This defines…
We construct a Liouville superconformal field theory with eight real supercharges in four dimensions. The Liouville superfield is an $\mathcal{N}=2$ chiral superfield with sixteen bosonic and sixteen fermionic component fields. Its lowest component is a log-correlated complex scalar field whose real part carries a background charge. The theory is non-unitary with a continuous spectrum of scaling dimensions. We study its quantum dynamics on the supersymmetric 4-sphere and show that the classical background charge is not corrected quantum mechanically. We calculate the super-Weyl anomaly coeffic…
We study large-N double-scaling limits of U(N) gauge theories in four dimensions. We focus on theories in a partially confining phase where an abelian subgroup $\hat{G}$ of the gauge group remains unconfined. Double-scaling is defined near critical points in the parameter/moduli space where states charged under $\hat{G}$ become massless. In specific cases, we present evidence that the double-scaled theory is dual to a non-critical superstring background. Models studied include the $β$-deformation of ${\cal N}=4$ SUSY Yang-Mills which leads to a non-critical string theory with sixteen superchar…
We present nontrivial examples of d=3 gauge theories with sixteen and eight supercharges which are infrared dual at special points in the moduli space. This duality is distinct from mirror symmetry. To demonstrate duality we construct the gauge theories of interest using D2-branes and orientifolds and then consider their lift to M-theory. We also discuss the strong coupling limit of orientifold two-planes and orbifolds of orientifold six-planes.
In this paper we propose a quiver model of matrix quantum mechanics with 8 supercharges which, on a Higgs branch, deconstructs the worldsheet of Matrix String Theory. This discrete model evades the fermion doubling problem and, in the continuum limit, enhances the number of supersymmetries to sixteen. Our model is motivated by orbifolding the Matrix Model, and the deconstruction {\it ansatz} exhibits a duality between target space compactification and worldsheet deconstruction.
A two charge system in string theory preserving eight supercharges can be described as a small black hole that has zero entropy in the supergravity approximation, but classical higher derivative corrections produce a finite entropy in accordance with the prediction of microstate counting. On the other hand for the same system one can construct smooth horizonless classical solutions whose geometric quantization describes the individual microstates which contribute to the entropy. In this note we point out that there is no duality frame in which the system admits both these classical description…
Gravitational entropy arises in string theory via coarse graining over an underlying space of microstates. In this review we would like to address the question of how the classical black hole geometry itself arises as an effective or approximate description of a pure state, in a closed string theory, which semiclassical observers are unable to distinguish from the "naive" geometry. In cases with enough supersymmetry it has been possible to explicitly construct these microstates in spacetime, and understand how coarse-graining of non-singular, horizon-free objects can lead to an effective descr…
We construct a lattice formulation of a mass-deformed two-dimensional N=(8,8) super Yang-Mills theory with preserving two supercharges exactly. Gauge fields are represented by compact unitary link variables, and the exact supercharges on the lattice are nilpotent up to gauge transformations and SU(2)_R rotations. Due to the mass deformation, the lattice model is free from the vacuum degeneracy problem, which was encountered in earlier approaches, and flat directions of scalar fields are stabilized giving discrete minima representing fuzzy S^2. Around the trivial minimum, quantum continuum theo…
We describe three previously unnoticed components of the moduli space of minimally supersymmetric string theories in $d\geq 7$, describing in some detail their spectrum and duality properties. We find a new component in nine and eight dimensions, and two additional ones in seven dimensions. These theories were originally discovered in a bottom-up classification of possible F/M-theory singularity freezing patterns in the K3 lattice, described in a companion paper. The 9d/8d component can be understood as F/M-theory on a twisted fibration of the Klein bottle over a circle, while the new seven-di…
This is the content of a set of lectures given at the XIII Jorge Andre Swieca Summer School on Particles and Fields, held in Campos do Jordao, Brazil in January 2005. They intend to be a basic introduction to the topic of gauge/gravity duality in confining theories. We start by reviewing some key aspects of the low energy physics of non-Abelian gauge theories. Then, we present the basics of the AdS/CFT correspondence and its extension both to gauge theories in different spacetime dimensions with sixteen supercharges and to more realistic situations with less supersymmetry. We discuss the diffe…
Field theories on anti-de Sitter (AdS) space can be studied by realizing them as low-energy limits of AdS vacua of string/M theory. In an appropriate limit, the field theories decouple from the rest of string/M theory. Since these vacua are dual to conformal field theories (CFTs), this relates some of the observables of these field theories on AdS to a subsector of the dual CFTs. We exemplify this `rigid holography' by studying in detail the 6d N=(2,0) A_{K-1} superconformal field theory (SCFT) on AdS_5xS^1, with equal radii for AdS_5 and for S^1. We choose specific boundary conditions preserv…
