Implicit fields have recently shown increasing success in representing and learning 3D shapes accurately. Signed distance fields and occupancy fields are decades old and still the preferred representations, both with well-studied properties, despite their restriction to closed surfaces. With neural networks, several other variations and training principles have been proposed with the goal to represent all classes of shapes. In this paper, we develop a novel and yet a fundamental representation considering unit vectors in 3D space and call it Vector Field (VF): at each point in $\mathbb{R}^3$, VF is directed at the closest point on the surface. We theoretically demonstrate that VF can be easily transformed to surface density by computing the flux density. Unlike other standard representations, VF directly encodes an important physical property of the surface, its normal. We further show the advantages of VF representation, in learning open, closed, or multi-layered as well as piecewise planar surfaces. We compare our method on several datasets including ShapeNet where the proposed new neural implicit field shows superior accuracy in representing any type of shape, outperforming other standard methods. Code is available at https://github.com/edomel/ImplicitVF.
This paper discusses three basic blocks for the inference of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Pyramid Vector Quantization (PVQ) is discussed as an effective quantizer for CNNs weights resulting in highly sparse and compressible networks. Properties of PVQ are exploited for the elimination of multipliers during inference while maintaining high performance. The result is then extended to any other quantized weights. The Tiny Yolo v3 CNN is used to compare such basic blocks.
We introduce ADMM-pruned Compressive AutoEncoder (CAE-ADMM) that uses Alternative Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) to optimize the trade-off between distortion and efficiency of lossy image compression. Specifically, ADMM in our method is to promote sparsity to implicitly optimize the bitrate, different from entropy estimators used in the previous research. The experiments on public datasets show that our method outperforms the original CAE and some traditional codecs in terms of SSIM/MS-SSIM metrics, at reasonable inference speed.

Existing 3D surface representation approaches are unable to accurately classify pixels and their orientation lying on the boundary of an object. Thus resulting in coarse representations which usually require post-processing steps to extract 3D surface meshes. To overcome this limitation, we propose an end-to-end trainable model that directly predicts implicit surface representations of arbitrary topology by optimising a novel geometric loss function. Specifically, we propose to represent the output as an oriented level set of a continuous embedding function, and incorporate this in a deep end-…

Existing pipelines of semantic correspondence commonly include extracting high-level semantic features for the invariance against intra-class variations and background clutters. This architecture, however, inevitably results in a low-resolution matching field that additionally requires an ad-hoc interpolation process as a post-processing for converting it into a high-resolution one, certainly limiting the overall performance of matching results. To overcome this, inspired by recent success of implicit neural representation, we present a novel method for semantic correspondence, called Neural M…
In this paper, we present a novel implicit glyph shape representation, which models glyphs as shape primitives enclosed by quadratic curves, and naturally enables generating glyph images at arbitrary high resolutions. Experiments on font reconstruction and interpolation tasks verified that this structured implicit representation is suitable for describing both structure and style features of glyphs. Furthermore, based on the proposed representation, we design a simple yet effective disentangled network for the challenging one-shot font style transfer problem, and achieve the best results compa…

We introduce RIM-Net, a neural network which learns recursive implicit fields for unsupervised inference of hierarchical shape structures. Our network recursively decomposes an input 3D shape into two parts, resulting in a binary tree hierarchy. Each level of the tree corresponds to an assembly of shape parts, represented as implicit functions, to reconstruct the input shape. At each node of the tree, simultaneous feature decoding and shape decomposition are carried out by their respective feature and part decoders, with weight sharing across the same hierarchy level. As an implicit field deco…

Implicit neural representations with multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs) have recently gained prominence for a wide variety of tasks such as novel view synthesis and 3D object representation and rendering. However, a significant challenge with these representations is that both training and inference with an MLP over a large number of input coordinates to learn and represent an image, video, or 3D object, require large amounts of computation and incur long processing times. In this work, we aim to accelerate inference and training of coordinate-based MLPs for implicit neural representations by prop…
Majority of the perception methods in robotics require depth information provided by RGB-D cameras. However, standard 3D sensors fail to capture depth of transparent objects due to refraction and absorption of light. In this paper, we introduce a new approach for depth completion of transparent objects from a single RGB-D image. Key to our approach is a local implicit neural representation built on ray-voxel pairs that allows our method to generalize to unseen objects and achieve fast inference speed. Based on this representation, we present a novel framework that can complete missing depth gi…
Implicit Neural Representations (INRs) have emerged and shown their benefits over discrete representations in recent years. However, fitting an INR to the given observations usually requires optimization with gradient descent from scratch, which is inefficient and does not generalize well with sparse observations. To address this problem, most of the prior works train a hypernetwork that generates a single vector to modulate the INR weights, where the single vector becomes an information bottleneck that limits the reconstruction precision of the output INR. Recent work shows that the whole set…
This paper introduces Attentive Implicit Representation Networks (AIR-Nets), a simple, but highly effective architecture for 3D reconstruction from point clouds. Since representing 3D shapes in a local and modular fashion increases generalization and reconstruction quality, AIR-Nets encode an input point cloud into a set of local latent vectors anchored in 3D space, which locally describe the object's geometry, as well as a global latent description, enforcing global consistency. Our model is the first grid-free, encoder-based approach that locally describes an implicit function. The vector at…

A neural implicit outputs a number indicating whether the given query point in space is inside, outside, or on a surface. Many prior works have focused on _latent-encoded_ neural implicits, where a latent vector encoding of a specific shape is also fed as input. While affording latent-space interpolation, this comes at the cost of reconstruction accuracy for any _single_ shape. Training a specific network for each 3D shape, a _weight-encoded_ neural implicit may forgo the latent vector and focus reconstruction accuracy on the details of a single shape. While previously considered as an interme…

NeRF-based techniques fit wide and deep multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs) to a continuous radiance field that can be rendered from any unseen viewpoint. However, the lack of surface and normals definition and high rendering times limit their usage in typical computer graphics applications. Such limitations have recently been overcome separately, but solving them together remains an open problem. We present KiloNeuS, a neural representation reconstructing an implicit surface represented as a signed distance function (SDF) from multi-view images and enabling real-time rendering by partitioning the …
