The lens data of a Riemannian manifold with boundary is the collection of lengths of geodesics with endpoints on the boundary together with their incoming and outgoing vectors. We show that negatively-curved Riemannian manifolds with strictly convex boundary are locally lens rigid in the following sense: if $g_0$ is such a metric, then any metric $g$ sufficiently close to $g_0$ and with same lens data is isometric to $g_0$, up to a boundary-preserving diffeomorphism. More generally, we consider the same problem for a wider class of metrics with strictly convex boundary, called metrics of Anosov type. We prove that the same rigidity result holds within that class in dimension $2$ and in any dimension, further assuming that the curvature is non-positive.
This article considers inverse problems on closed Riemannian surfaces whose geodesic flow is Anosov. We prove spectral rigidity for any Anosov surface and injectivity of the geodesic ray transform on solenoidal 2-tensors. We also establish surjectivity results for the adjoint of the geodesic ray transform on solenoidal tensors. The surjectivity results are of independent interest and imply the existence of many geometric invariant distributions on the unit sphere bundle. In particular, we show that on any Anosov surface $(M,g)$, given a smooth function $f$ on $M$ there is a distribution in the…
We consider a totally nonsymplectic Anosov action of Z^k which is either uniformly quasiconformal or pinched on each coarse Lyapunov distribution. We show that such an action on a torus is C^\infty--conjugate to an action by affine automorphisms. We also obtain similar global rigidity results for actions on an arbitrary compact manifold assuming that the coarse Lyapunov foliations are jointly integrable.
We consider an optical hypersurface $Σ$ in the cotangent bundle $τ:T^*M\to M$ of a closed manifold $M$ endowed with a twisted symplectic structure. We show that if the characteristic foliation of $Σ$ is Anosov, then a smooth 1-form $θ$ on $M$ is exact if and only $τ^*θ$ has zero integral over every closed characteristic of $Σ$. This result is derived from a related theorem about magnetic flows which generalizes our work in \cite{DP}. Other rigidity issues are also discussed.
In this paper we show that many projective Anosov representations act convex cocompactly on some properly convex domain in real projective space. In particular, if a non-elementary word hyperbolic group is not commensurable to a non-trivial free product or the fundamental group of a closed hyperbolic surface, then any projective Anosov representation of that group acts convex cocompactly on some properly convex domain in real projective space. We also show that if a projective Anosov representation preserves a properly convex domain, then it acts convex cocompactly on some (possibly different)…
We show that most homogeneous Anosov actions of higher rank Abelian groups are locally smoothly rigid (up to an automorphism). This result is the main part in the proof of local smooth rigidity for two very different types of algebraic actions of irreducible lattices in higher rank semisimple Lie groups: (i) the Anosov actions by automorphisms of tori and nil-manifolds, and (ii) the actions of cocompact lattices on Furstenberg boundaries, in particular, projective spaces. The main new technical ingredient in the proofs is the use of a proper "non-stationary" generalization of the classical the…
We show, using standard results in length spectrum rigidity and symplectic homology, that if the unit tangent bundles of two compact surfaces of negative curvature are exact symplectomorphic, then the underlying surfaces are isometric, and hence the disk bundles are symplectomorphic smoothly up to the boundaries. Motivated by the work of Eliashberg and Hofer on unseen symplectic boundaries, we try to extend the above result to other classes of domains in (co)tangent bundles of surfaces. The domains we can treat consist of those bounded by deformations of negatively curved unit cotangent bundle…
We study the boundary and lens rigidity problems on domains without assuming the convexity of the boundary. We show that such rigidities hold when the domain is a simply connected compact Riemannian surface without conjugate points. For the more general class of non-trapping compact Riemannian surfaces with no conjugate points, we show lens rigidity. We also prove the injectivity of the X-ray transform on tensors in a variety of settings with non-convex boundary and, in some situations, allowing a non-empty trapped set.
In all dimensions, we prove that the marked length spectrum of a Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ with Anosov geodesic flow and non-positive curvature locally determines the metric in the sense that two close enough metrics with the same marked length spectrum are isometric. In addition, we provide a completely new stability estimate quantifying how the marked length spectrum control the distance between the metrics. In dimension $2$ we obtain similar results for general metrics with Anosov geodesic flows. We also solve locally a rigidity conjecture of Croke relating volume and marked length spectr…
In this paper we consider the lens rigidity problem with partial data for conformal metrics in the presence of a magnetic field on a compact manifold of dimension $\geq 3$ with boundary. We show that one can uniquely determine the conformal factor and the magnetic field near a strictly convex (with respect to the magnetic geodesics) boundary point where the lens data is accessible. We also prove a boundary rigidity result with partial data assuming the lengths of magnetic geodesics joining boundary points near a strictly convex boundary point are known. The local lens rigidity result also lead…
For a Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ with strictly convex boundary $\partial M$, the lens data consists in the set of lengths of geodesics $γ$ with endpoints on $\partial M$, together with their endpoints $(x_-,x_+)\in \partial M\times \partial M$ and tangent exit vectors $(v_-,v_+)\in T_{x_-} M\times T_{x_+} M$. We show deformation lens rigidity for a large class of manifolds which includes all manifolds with negative curvature and strictly convex boundary, possibly with non-trivial topology and trapped geodesics. For the same class of manifolds in dimension $2$, we prove that the set of endpoin…
This paper develops new techniques for studying smooth dynamical systems in the presence of a \CC metric. Principally, we employ the theory of Margulis-Mostow, Métivier, Mitchell and Pansu on tangent cones to establish resonances between Lyapunov exponents. We apply these results in three different settings. First, we explore rigidity properties of smooth dominated splittings for Anosov diffeomorphisms and flows via associated smooth \CC metrics. Second, we obtain local rigidity properties of higher hyperbolic rank metrics in a neighborhood of a locally symmetric one. For the latter applicatio…
It was proved in \cite{NS1} that obstacles $K$ in $\R^d$ that are finite disjoint unions of strictly convex domains with $C^3$ boundaries are uniquely determined by the travelling times of billiard trajectories in their exteriors and also by their so called scattering length spectra. However the case $d = 2$ is not properly covered in \cite{NS1}. In the present paper we give a separate different proof of the same result in the case $d = 2$.
We prove that if two non-trapping obstacles in $\mathbb{R}^n$ satisfy some rather weak non-degeneracy conditions and the scattering rays in their exteriors have (almost) the same travelling times or (almost) the same scattering length spectrum, then they coincide.
We consider the scattering and lens rigidity of compact surfaces with boundary that have a trapped geodesic. In particular we show that the flat cylinder and the flat Möbius strip are determined by their lens data. We also see by example that the flat Möbius strip is not determined by it's scattering data. We then consider the case of negatively curved cylinders with convex boundary and show that they are lens rigid.
Using the thermodynamics formalism, we introduce a notion of intersection for projective Anosov representations, show analyticity results for the intersection and the entropy, and rigidity results for the intersection. We use the renormalized intersection to produce a $Out(Γ)$-invariant Riemannian metric on the smooth points of the deformation space of irreducible, projective Anosov representations of a word hyperbolic group $Γ$ into $SL(m,R)$ whose Zariski closure contains a generic element. In particular, we produce mapping class group invariant Riemannian metrics on Hitchin components which…
We consider the motion of a classical colored spinless particle under the influence of an external Yang-Mills potential $A$ on a compact manifold with boundary of dimension $\geq 3$. We show that under suitable convexity assumptions, we can recover the potential $A$, up to gauge transformations, from the lens data of the system, namely, scattering data plus travel times between boundary points.
Let $σ$ be the scattering relation on a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ with non-necessarily convex boundary, that maps initial points of geodesic rays on the boundary and initial directions to the outgoing point on the boundary and the outgoing direction. Let $\ell$ be the length of that geodesic ray. We study the question of whether the metric $g$ is uniquely determined, up to an isometry, by knowledge of $σ$ and $\ell$ restricted on some subset $D$. We allow possible conjugate points but we assume that the conormal bundle of the geodesics issued from $D$ covers $T^*M$; and that those geodes…
Consider a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary. Assume all maximally extended geodesics intersect the boundary at both ends. Then to each maximal geodesic segment one can form a triple consisting of the initial and final vectors of the segment and the length of the segment. The collection of all such triples comprises the lens data. In this paper, it is shown that in the category of analytic Riemannian manifolds, the lens data uniquely determine the metric up to isometry. There are no convexity assumptions on the boundary, and conjugate points are allowed, but with some restriction.
We prove that the topology, smooth structure, and metric of a compact Lorentzian manifold with boundary is uniquely determined by data at the boundary. The data consists of the lengths and directions of future-directed once-broken geodesics connecting points on the boundary, which are first timelike and then lightlike. This requires the strong causality condition and a weak convexity assumption, but it holds without any assumptions about conjugate points. With an additional convexity assumption we prove the analogous statement for future-directed once-broken timelike geodesics. If there are no…
Let $g$ be a Riemannian metric for $\mathbf{R}^d$ ($d\geq 3$) which differs from the Euclidean metric only in a smooth and strictly convex bounded domain $M$. The lens rigidity problem is concerned with recovering the metric $g$ inside $M$ from the corresponding lens relation on the boundary $\partial M$. In this paper, the stability of the lens rigidity problem is investigated for metrics which are a priori close to a given non-trapping metric satisfying "strong fold-regular" condition. A metric $g$ is called strong fold-regular if for each point $x\in M$, there exists a set of geodesics pass…
We survey some results on travel time tomography. The question is whether we can determine the anisotropic index of refraction of a medium by measuring the travel times of waves going through the medium. This can be recast as geometry problems, the boundary rigidity problem and the lens rigidity problem. The boundary rigidity problem is whether we can determine a Riemannian metric of a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary by measuring the distance function between boundary points. The lens rigidity problem problem is to determine a Riemannian metric of a Riemannian manifold with boundary …
In this paper we analyze the local and global boundary rigidity problem for general Riemannian manifolds with boundary $(M,g)$. We show that the boundary distance function, i.e., $d_g|_{\partial M\times\partial M}$, known near a point $p\in \partial M$ at which $\partial M$ is strictly convex, determines $g$ in a suitable neighborhood of $p$ in $M$, up to the natural diffeomorphism invariance of the problem. We also consider the closely related lens rigidity problem which is a more natural formulation if the boundary distance is not realized by unique minimizing geodesics. The lens relation me…
Scattering rigidity of a Riemannian manifold allows one to tell the metric of a manifold with boundary by looking at the directions of geodesics at the boundary. Lens rigidity allows one to tell the metric of a manifold with boundary from the same information plus the length of geodesics. There are a variety of results about lens rigidity but very little is known for scattering rigidity. We will discuss the subtle difference between these two types of rigidities and prove that they are equivalent for two-dimensional simple manifolds with boundaries. In particular, this implies that two-dimensi…
We study the boundary rigidity problem with partial data consisting of determining locally the Riemannian metric of a Riemannian manifold with boundary from the distance function measured at pairs of points near a fixed point on the boundary. We show that one can recover uniquely and in a stable way a conformal factor near a strictly convex point where we have the information. In particular, this implies that we can determine locally the isotropic sound speed of a medium by measuring the travel times of waves joining points close to a convex point on the boundary. The local results lead to a g…
We present a spectral rigidity result for the Dirac operator on lens spaces. More specifically, we show that each homogeneous lens space and each three dimensional lens space $L(q;p)$ with $q$ prime is completely characterized by its Dirac spectrum in the class of all lens spaces.
For a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary, we want to find the metric structure from knowledge of distances between boundary points. This is called the "boundary rigidity problem". If the boundary is not concave, which means locally not all shortest paths lie entirely in the boundary, then we are able to find the Taylor series of the metric tensor ($C^\infty$ jet) at the boundary. In this paper we give a new reconstruction procedure for the jet at non-concave points on the boundary using the localized boundary distance function. A closely related problem is the "lens rigidity problem", w…

We prove the local invertibility, up to potential fields, and stability of the geodesic X-ray transform on tensor fields of order 1 and 2 near a strictly convex boundary point, on manifolds with boundary of dimension n>=3. We also present an inversion formula. Under the condition that the manifold can be foliated with a continuous family of strictly convex surfaces, we prove a global result which also implies a lens rigidity result near such a metric. The class of manifolds satisfying the foliation condition includes manifolds with no focal points, and does not exclude existence of conjugate p…
