Extending Blaschke and Lebesgue's classical result in the Euclidean plane, it has been recently proved in spherical and the hyperbolic cases, as well, that Reuleaux triangles have the minimal area among convex domains of constant width $D$. We prove an essentially optimal stability version of this statement in each of the three types of surfaces of constant curvature. In addition, we summarize the fundamental properties of convex bodies of constant width in spaces of constant curvature, and provide a characterization in the hyperbolic case in terms of horospheres.
The first main result presented in the paper shows that the perimeters of inner parallel sets of planar shapes having a given constant width are minimal for the Reuleaux triangles. This implies that the areas of inner parallel sets and, consequently, the inverse of the Cheeger constant are also minimal for the Reuleaux triangles. Proofs use elementary geometry arguments and are based on direct comparisons between general constant width shapes and the Reuleaux triangle.
The Negative Pedal Curve of the Reuleaux Triangle w.r. to a point $M$ on its boundary consists of two elliptic arcs and a point $P_0$. Interestingly, the conic passing through the four arc endpoints and by $P_0$ has a remarkable property: one of its foci is $M$. We provide a synthetic proof based on Poncelet's polar duality and inversive techniques. Additional intriguing properties of Reuleaux negative pedal are proved using straightforward techniques.
The purpose of this paper is to describe a new $3$-dimensional family of bodies of constant width that we have called peabodies, obtained from the Reuleaux tetrahedron by replacing a small neighborhood of all six edges with sections of an envelope of spheres. This family contains, in particular, the two Meissner solids and a body with tetrahedral symmetry that we have called Robert's body. Behind the construction of this family lies the classical notion of confocal quadrics discussed, for example, by Hilbert in his famous book. We study confocal quadrics and prove that the distances of an alte…
The Blaschke-Lebesgue Theorem states that among all planar convex domains of given constant width B the Reuleaux triangle has minimal area. It is the purpose of the present note to give a direct proof of this theorem by analyzing the underlying variational problem. The advantages of the proof are that it shows uniqueness (modulo rigid deformations such as rotation and translation) and leads analytically to the shape of the area-minimizing domain. Most previous proofs have relied on foreknowledge of the minimizing domain. Key parts of the analysis extend to the higher-dimensional situation, whe…
Let $C$ and $D$ be convex bodies in the Euclidean space $E^d$. We define the centroid Banach-Mazur distance $δ_{BM}^{\rm cen} (C, D)$ similarly to the classic Banach-Mazur distance $δ_{BM} (C, D)$, but with the extra requirement that the centroids of $C$ and an affine image of $D$ coincide. We prove that for the parallelogram $P$ and the triangle $T$ in $E^2$ we have $δ_{BM}^{\rm cen} (P, T) = \frac{5}{2}$.
Let $K \subset {\mathbb R}^2$ be an $o$-symmetric convex body, and $K^*$ its polar body. Then we have $|K|\cdot |K^*| \ge 8$, with equality if and only if $K$ is a parallelogram. ($| \cdot |$ denotes volume). If $K \subset {\mathbb R}^2$ is a convex body, with $o \in {\text{int}}\,K$, then $|K|\cdot |K^*| \ge 27/4$, with equality if and only if $K$ is a triangle and $o$ is its centroid. If $K \subset {\mathbb R}^2$ is a convex body, then we have $|K| \cdot |[(K-K)/2)]^* | \ge 6$, with equality if and only if $K$ is a triangle. These theorems are due to Mahler and Reisner, Mahler and Meyer, and…
The Blaschke-Leichtweiss theorem (Abh. Math. Sem. Univ. Hamburg 75: 257-284, 2005) states that the smallest area convex domain of constant width $w$ in the $2$-dimensional spherical space ${\mathbb S}^2$ is the spherical Reuleaux triangle for all $0<w\leq\fracπ{2}$. In this paper we extend this result to the family of wide $r$-disk domains of ${\mathbb S}^2$, where $0<r\leq\fracπ{2}$. Here a wide $r$-disk domain is an intersection of spherical disks of radius $r$ with centers contained in their intersection. This gives a new and elementary proof of the Blaschke-Leichtweiss theorem. Furthermore…
We consider the width $X_T(ω)$ of a convex $n$-gon $T$ in the plane along the random direction $ω\in\mathbb{R}/2π\mathbb{Z}$ and study its deviation rate: $$ δ(X_T)=\frac{\sqrt{\mathbb{E}(X^2_T)-\mathbb{E}(X_T)^2}}{\mathbb{E}(X_T)}. $$ We prove that the maximum is attained if and only if $T$ degenerates to a $2$-gon. Let $n\geq 2$ be an integer which is not a power of $2$. We show that $$ \sqrt{\fracπ{4n\tan(\fracπ{2n})} +\frac{π^2}{8n^2\sin^2(\fracπ{2n})}-1} $$ is the minimum of $δ(X_T)$ among all $n$-gons and determine completely the shapes of $T$'s which attain this minimum. They are charac…
In this paper we are interested in "optimal" universal geometric inequalities involving the area, diameter and inradius of convex bodies. The term "optimal" is to be understood in the following sense: we tackle the issue of minimizing/maximizing the Lebesgue measure of a convex body among all convex sets of given diameter and inradius. The minimization problem in the two-dimensional case has been solved in a previous work, by M. Hernandez-Cifre and G. Salinas. In this article, we provide a generalization to the n-dimensional case based on a different approach, as well as the complete solving o…
The goal of this paper is to study geometric and extremal properties of the convex body $B_{\mathcal F(M)}$, which is the unit ball of the Lipschitz-free Banach space associated with a finite metric space $M$. We investigate $\ell_1$ and $\ell_\infty$-sums, in particular we characterize the metric spaces such that $B_{\mathcal F(M)}$ is a Hanner polytope. We also characterize the finite metric spaces whose Lipschitz-free spaces are isometric. We discuss the extreme properties of the volume product $\mathcal{P}(M)=|B_{\mathcal F(M)}|\cdot|B_{\mathcal F(M)}^\circ|$, when the number of elements o…
