High-dimensional entangled states in orbital angular momentum (OAM) basis offer several unique advantages for quantum information applications. However, for the optimal performance of a given application, one requires a generation technique for OAM entangled states that is completely postselection-free and fully controllable. Nonetheless, despite several efforts in the past, no such technique currently exists. In this article, we propose just such a technique and experimentally demonstrate postselection-free generation of up to about 150-dimensional OAM entangled states. We report the generation accuracy, which is a measure of the control, to be more than 98% for states with Gaussian and triangular OAM Schmidt spectra and up to 90% for the maximally-entangled OAM states, which have rectangular spectra.
We show that a single particle in a superposition of different paths can entangle two objects located on each path. The entanglement has its maximum visibility for intermediate coupling strengths. In particular, when the two quantum systems with which the particle interacts are detectors that measure its presence and its polarization, the so-called quantum Cheshire cat is realized.
A photon source based on postselection from entangled photon pairs produced by parametric frequency down-conversion is suggested. Its ability to provide good approximations of single-photon states is examined. Application of this source in quantum cryptography for quantum key distribution is discussed. Advantages of the source compared to other currently used sources are clarified. Future prospects of the photon source are outlined.
By selecting a certain subensemble of joint detection events in a two-particle interferometer arrangement, a formal nonlocality contradiction of the Hardy type is derived for an ensemble of particle pairs configured in the maximally entangled state. It is argued, however, that the class of experiments exhibiting this kind of contradiction does not rule out the assumption of local realism.
We propose a new protocol for the weak measurement of any observable with remote pre and postselections. We show that if two parties share a pure entangled state, then by using local operations and classical communication they can preselect and postselect at distant locations leading to the weak value of an observable as a shift in the pointer of the apparatus at one location in the process of the weak measurement. This can be achieved with either sharing of a pure maximally or non-maximally entangled state. We generalize the protocol for realizing the weak value of any observable with remote …
We report a practical non-postselection entanglement concentration scheme in which a maximally entangled Bell-state photon pair is produced from two pairs of partially (or non-maximally) entangled photons. Since this scheme is built only upon linear optical elements and does not require photon-number resolving detectors, it has immediate applications in experimental implementations of various quantum information protocols which require two-photon Bell-states.
We report on an experimental violation of the Bell-Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (Bell-CHSH) inequality using energy-time entangled photons. The experiment is not free of the locality and detection loopholes, but is the first violation of the Bell-CHSH inequality using energy-time entangled photons which is free of the postselection loophole described by Aerts et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 2872 (1999)].
We theoretically demonstrate a method for producing the maximally path-entangled state (1/Sqrt[2]) (|N,0> + exp[iN phi] |0,N>) using intensity-symmetric multiport beamsplitters, single photon inputs, and either photon-counting postselection or conditional measurement. The use of postselection enables successful implementation with non-unit efficiency detectors. We also demonstrate how to make the same state more conveniently by replacing one of the single photon inputs by a coherent state.
We present a parameter estimation technique based on performing joint measurements of a weak interaction away from the weak-value-amplification approximation. Two detectors are used to collect full statistics of the correlations between two weakly entangled degrees of freedom. Without the need of postselection, the protocol resembles the anomalous amplification of an imaginary-weak-value-like response. The amplification is induced in the difference signal of both detectors allowing robustness to different sources of technical noise, and offering in addition the advantages of balanced signals f…
The existing techniques for measuring high-dimensional pure states of light in the orbital angular momentum (OAM) basis either involve a large number of single-pixel data acquisitions and substantial postselection errors that increase with dimensionality, or involve substantial loss, or require interference with a reference beam of known phase. Here, we propose an interferometric technique that can measure an unknown pure state using only nine multipixel image acquisitions without involving postselection, loss, or a separate reference beam. The technique essentially measures two complex correl…
The experimental verification of quantum features, such as entanglement, at large scales is extremely challenging because of environment-induced decoherence. Indeed, measurement techniques for demonstrating the quantumness of multiparticle systems in the presence of losses are difficult to define and, if not sufficiently accurate, they provide wrong conclusions. We present a Bell test where one photon of an entangled pair is amplified and then detected by threshold detectors, whose signals undergo postselection. The amplification is performed by a classical machine, which produces a fully sepa…
Device-independent (DI) quantum communication will require a loophole-free violation of Bell inequalities. In typical scenarios where line-of-sight between the communicating parties is not available, it is convenient to use energy-time entangled photons due to intrinsic robustness while propagating over optical fibers. Here we show an energy-time Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt Bell inequality violation with two parties separated by 3.7 km over the deployed optical fiber network belonging to the University of Concepción in Chile. Remarkably, this is the first Bell violation with spatially separated…
Quantum interference, like Hong-Ou-Mandel interference, has played an important role to test fundamental concepts in quantum physics. We experimentally show that the multiple quantum interference effects enable the generation of high-performance polarization entangled photons. These photons have a high-emission rate, are degenerate, have a broadband distribution, and are postselection free. A quantum interferometric scheme, based on a round-trip configuration of a double-pass polarization Sagnac interferometer, makes it possible to use the large generation efficiency of polarization entangled …
High-dimensional entanglement is a valuable resource for quantum communication, and photon pairs entangled in orbital angular momentum are commonly used for encoding high-dimensional quantum states. However, methods for preparation of maximally entangled states of arbitrary dimensionality are still lacking, and currently used approaches essentially rely on filtering and entanglement concentration. Here we experimentally realize a method for generation of high-dimensional maximally entangled OAM states of photon pairs which does not require any of these procedures. Moreover, the prepared state …
We introduce schemes for linear-optical quantum state generation. A quantum state generator is a device that prepares a desired quantum state using product inputs from photon sources, linear-optical networks, and postselection using photon counters. We show that this device can be concisely described in terms of polynomial equations and unitary constraints. We illustrate the power of this language by applying the Grobner-basis technique along with the notion of vacuum extensions to solve the problem of how to construct a quantum state generator analytically for any desired state, and use metho…
We derive a first order differential equation for the decoherence of an orbital angular momentum entangled biphoton state propagating through a turbulent atmosphere. The derivation is based on the distortion that orbital angular momentum states experience due to propagation through a thin sheet of turbulent atmosphere. This distortion is treated as an infinitesimal transformation leading to a first order differential equation, which we call an infinitesimal propagation equation. The equation is applied to a simple qubit case to show how the entanglement decays.
Hybrid entangled states exhibit entanglement between different degrees of freedom of a particle pair and thus could be useful for asymmetric optical quantum network where the communication channels are characterized by different properties. We report the first experimental realization of hybrid polarization-orbital angular momentum (OAM) entangled states by adopting a spontaneous parametric down conversion source of polarization entangled states and a polarization-OAM transferrer. The generated quantum states have been characterized through quantum state tomography. Finally, the violation of B…
Starting from the standard Hamiltonian describing the optical non-linear process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion, we theoretically show that the generated entangled photon-pairs carry non-negligible orbital angular momentum in the degrees of freedom of relative movement in the type-II cases due to spatial symmetry breaking. We also show that the orbital angular momentum carried by photon-pairs in these degrees of freedom escapes detection in the traditional measurement scheme, which demands development of new techniques for further experimental investigations.
Quantum entanglement shared between more than two particles is essential to foundational questions in quantum mechanics, and upcoming quantum information technologies. So far, up to 14 two-dimensional qubits have been entangled, and an open question remains if one can also demonstrate entanglement of higher-dimensional discrete properties of more than two particles. A promising route is the use of the photon orbital angular momentum (OAM), which enables implementation of novel quantum information protocols, and the study of fundamentally new quantum states. To date, only two of such multidimen…
We introduce a spin-orbital entangled (SOE) resonating valence bond (RVB) state on a square lattice of spins-$\frac12$ and orbitals represented by pseudospins-$\frac12$. Like the standard RVB state, it is a superposition of nearest-neighbor hard-core coverings of the lattice by spin singlets, but adjacent singlets are favoured to have perpendicular orientations and, more importantly, an orientation of each singlet is entangled with orbitals' state on its two lattice sites. The SOE-RVB state can be represented by a projected entangled pair state (PEPS) with a bond dimension $D=4$. This represen…
What are the orbital angular momentum correlations between spatially entangled photon pairs generated in spontaneous parametric down-conversion? We show that the answer to this question can be given in two alternative, although complementary, ways. The answer posed in this letter explains satisfactorily the seemingly contradictory results obtained in different experiments, and theoretical approaches.
The capacity of optical communication channels can be increased by space division multiplexing in structured optical fibers. Radial core optical fibers allows for the propagation of twisted light--eigenmodes of orbital angular momentum, which have attracted considerable attention for high-dimensional quantum information. Here we study the generation of entangled photons that are tailor-made for coupling into ring core optical fibers. We show that the coupling of photon pairs produced by parametric down-conversion can be increased by close to a factor of three by pumping the non-linear crystal …
We show that the use of entangled photons having non-zero orbital angular momentum (OAM) increases the resolution and sensitivity of angular-displacement measurements performed using an interferometer. By employing a 4$\times$4 matrix formulation to study the propagation of entangled OAM modes, we analyze measurement schemes for two and four entangled photons and obtain explicit expressions for the resolution and sensitivity in these schemes. We find that the resolution of angular-displacement measurements scales as $Nl$ while the angular sensitivity increases as $1/(2Nl)$, where $N$ is the nu…
The concept of correlated two-photon spiral imaging is introduced. We begin by analyzing the joint orbital angular momentum (OAM) spectrum of correlated photon pairs. The mutual information carried by the photon pairs is evaluated, and it is shown that when an object is placed in one of the beam paths the value of the mutual information is strongly dependent on object shape and is closely related to the degree of rotational symmetry present. After analyzing the effect of the object on the OAM correlations, the method of correlated spiral imaging is described. We first present a version using p…
Orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexed entangled state is an important quantum resource for high dimensional quantum information processing. In this paper, we experimentally quantify quantum coherence of OAM multiplexed continuous-variable (CV) entangled state and characterize its evolution in a noisy environment. We show that the quantum coherence of the OAM multiplexed CV entangled state carrying topological charges $l=1$ and $l=2$ are the same as that of the Gaussian mode with $l=0$ in a noisy channel. Furthermore, we show that the quantum coherence of OAM multiplexed entangled state is…
We present an experimental evidence that high dimensional orbital angular momentum entanglement of a pair of photons can be survived after a photon-plasmon-photon conversion. The information of spatial modes can be coherently transmitted by surface plasmons. This experiment primarily studies the high dimensional entangled systems based on surface plasmon with subwavelength structures. It maybe useful in the investigation of spatial mode properties of surface plasmon assisted transmission through subwavelength hole arrays.
The evolution of an entangled photon state propagating through a turbulent atmosphere is formulated in terms of a set of coupled first order differential equations, by using an infinitesimal propagation approach. The orbital angular momentum (OAM) basis is used to described the density matrix of the state. Although the analysis is done in the paraxial limit for a monochromatic optical field, the formalism is comprehensive in the sense that it does not require any assumptions about the strength of the turbulence and it can incorporate any spectral model for the turbulence. As a comparative exam…
We analyze the effect of atmospheric Kolmogorov turbulence on entangled orbital angular momentum states generated by parametric down-conversion. We calculate joint and signal photon detection probabilities and obtain numerically their dependence on the mode-width-to-Fried-parameter ratio. We demonstrate that entangled photons are less robust to the effects of Kolmogorov turbulence compared to single photons. In contrast, signal photons are more robust than single photons in the lowest-order mode. We also obtain numerically a scaling relation between the value of the mode-width-to-Fried-paramet…
Optical modes possessing orbital angular momentum constitute a very useful platform for experimental studies on the quantum limits of Thermodynamics. Here, we present experimental results for entangled photon pairs subjected to thin turbulence simulated with spatial light modulators and interpret them in the context of the generalized Jarzysnki's fluctuation relation. By holographic measurement of the orbital angular momentum, we obtain the work distribution produced by the turbulence for single and double-sided turbulence channels. The use of the Klyshko's advanced wave picture allows us to i…
We consider the low-energy excitations of one-dimensional spin-orbital models which consist of spin waves, orbital waves, and joint spin-orbital excitations. Among the latter we identify strongly entangled spin-orbital bound states which appear as peaks in the von Neumann entropy (vNE) spectral function introduced in this work. The strong entanglement of bound states is manifested by a universal logarithmic scaling of the vNE with system size, while the vNE of other spin-orbital excitations saturates. We suggest that spin-orbital entanglement can be experimentally explored by the measurement o…
The orbital angular momentum of light, unlike spin, is an infinite-dimensional discrete variable and may hence offer enhanced performances for encoding, transmitting, and processing information in the quantum regime. Hitherto, this degree of freedom of light has been studied mainly in the context of quantum states with definite number of photons. On the other hand, field-quadrature continuous-variable quantum states of light allow implementing many important quantum protocols not accessible with photon-number states. Here, we present the first generation and complete experimental characterizat…
A mixture of two species of pseudospin-1/2 Bose gases exhibits interesting interplay between spin and orbital degrees of freedom. Expectation values of various quantities of the collective spins of the two species play crucial roles in the Gross-Pitaevskii-like equations governing the four orbital wave functions in which Bose-Einstein condensation occurs. Consequently, the elementary excitations of these orbital wave functions reflect properties of the collective spins. When the coupling between the two collective spins is isotropic, the energy gap of the gapped orbital excitation peaks, while…
Polarized light passing through twisted special wave plates show entangled state of both SAM and OAM. The variable circular and linear retarders (VCR and VLR) are studied here from the view point of quantum processing of entangled states. Interestingly the geometric phase in association with twist dependent gain of OAM has been discussed here. As an application of VLR, the origin of gradual flattened shape of wave fronts through successive array of antennas (QHQ) has been explained through new physical approach of the concurrence of entangled states.
Quantum phase transitions in the two-dimensional Kugel-Khomski model on a square lattice are studied using the plaquette mean field theory and the entanglement renormalization ansatz. When $3z^2-r^2$ orbitals are favored by the crystal field and Hund's exchange is finite, both methods give a noncollinear exotic magnetic order which consists of four sublattices with mutually orthogonal nearest neighbor and antiferromagnetic second neighbor spins. We derive effective frustrated spin model with second and third neighbor spin interactions which stabilize this phase and follow from spin-orbital qua…
We present rigorous topological order which emerges in a one-dimensional spin-orbital model due to the ring topology. Although an exact solution of a spin-orbital ring with SU(2) spin and XY orbital interactions separates spins from orbitals by means of a unitary transformation, the spins are not independent when the ring is closed, but form two half-rings carrying opposite pseudomomenta. We show that an inverse transformation back to the physical degrees of freedom entangles the spin half-rings with the orbitals once again. This surprising correlation arises on changing the topology from an o…
Heralded single-photon source (HSPS) with competitive single photon purity and indistinguishability has become an essential resource for photonic quantum information processing. Here, for the first time, we proposed a theoretical regime to enhance heralded single-photons generation by multiplexing the degree of the freedom of orbital angular momentum (OAM) of down-converted entangled photon pairs emitted from a nonlinear crystal. Experimentally, a proof-of-principle experiment has been performed through multiplexing three OAM modes. We achieve a 47$\%$ enhancement in single photon rate. A seco…
We propose to study novel quantum phases and excitations for a 2D spin-orbit (SO) coupled bosonic $p$-orbital optical lattice based on the recent experiments. The orbital and spin degrees of freedom with SO coupling compete and bring about nontrivial interacting quantum effects. We develop a self-consistent method for bosons and predict a spin-orbital entangled order for the ground phase, in sharp contrast to spinless high-orbital systems. Furthermore, we investigate the Bogoliubov excitations, showing that the Dirac and topological phonons are obtained corresponding to the predicted different…
Quantum cryptography and quantum key distribution (QKD) have been the most successful applications of quantum information processing, highlighting the unique capability of quantum mechanics, through the no-cloning theorem, to protect the security of shared encryption keys. Here we present a new and fundamentally different approach to high-capacity, high-efficiency QKD by exploiting interplay between cross-disciplinary ideas from quantum information and light scattering of aperiodic photonic media. The novelty of the proposed approach relies on a unique type of entangled-photon source and a new…
Orbital angular momentum (OAM) entanglement is investigated in the Bessel-Gauss (BG) basis. Having a readily adjustable radial scale, BG modes provide a more favourable basis for OAM entanglement over Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) modes. The OAM bandwidth in terms of BG modes can be increased by selection of particular radial modes and leads to a flattening of the spectrum. The flattening of the spectrum allows for higher entanglement. We demonstrate increased entanglement in terms of BG modes by performing a Bell-type experiment and violating the appropriate Clauser Horne Shimony Holt (CHSH) inequal…
Maximally entangled photon pairs with a spatial degree of freedom is a potential way for realizing high-capacity quantum computing and communication. However, methods to generate such entangled states with high quality, high brightness, and good controllability are needed. Here, a scheme is experimentally demonstrated that generates spatially maximally entangled photon pairs with an orbital angular momentum degree of freedom via spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a nonlinear crystal. Compared with existing methods using post-selection, the technique can directly modulate the spatial spe…
We study the generation of hybrid entanglement in a one-dimensional quantum walk. In particular, we explore the preparation of maximally entangled states between position and spin degrees of freedom. We address it as an optimization problem, where the cost function is the Schmidt norm. We then benchmark the algorithm and compare the generation of entanglement between the Hadamard quantum walk, the random quantum walk and the optimal quantum walk. Finally, we discuss an experimental scheme with a photonic quantum walk in the orbital angular momentum of light. The experimental measurement of ent…
Entanglement is a vital resource for realizing many tasks such as teleportation, secure key distribution, metrology and quantum computations. To effectively build entanglement between different quantum systems and share information between them, a frequency transducer to convert between quantum states of different wavelengths while retaining its quantum features is indispensable. Information encoded in the photons orbital angular momentum OAM degrees of freedom is preferred in harnessing the information carrying capacity of a single photon because of its unlimited dimensions. A quantum transdu…
Constructing a quantum memory for a photonic entanglement is vital for realizing quantum communication and network. Besides enabling the realization of high channel capacity communication, entangled photons of high-dimensional space are of great interest because of many extended applications in quantum information and fundamental physics fields. Photons entangled in a two-dimensional space had been stored in different system, but there have been no any report on the storage of a photon pair entangled in a high-dimensional space. Here, we report the first experimental realization of storing an …
We investigate two-photon entangled states using two important degrees of freedom of the electromagnetic field, namely orbital angular momentum (OAM) and spin angular momentum. For photons propagating in the same direction we apply the idea of $\textit{entanglement duality}$ and develop schemes to do $\textit{entanglement sorting}$ based either on OAM or polarization. In each case the entanglement is tested using appropriate witnesses. We finally present generalizations of these ideas to three- and four-photon entangled states.
Quantum protocols will be more efficient with high-dimensional entangled states. Photons carrying orbital angular momenta can be used to create a high-dimensional entangled state. In this paper we experimentally demonstrate the entanglement of the orbital angular momentum between the Stokes and anti-Stokes photons generated in a hot atomic ensemble using spontaneous four-wave-mixing. This experiment also suggests the existence of the entanglement concerned with spatial degrees of freedom between the hot atomic ensemble and the Stokes photon.
We report the first quantum entanglement experiment in South Africa. The spatial modes of the entangled photon pair are investigated with their potential for high-dimensional entanglement. The generation, measurement and characterisation of the entangled states are examined in detail, where we show high-dimensional entanglement in a Hilbert space of dimension 25. We highlight the experimental challenges contained within each step and provide practical techniques for future experiments in the quantum regime.
